My partner had the nachos. Shouldn't even be on the menu if that's the best they can do. Service was ok and fairly prompt. We had dinner at Fat Cats Cafe while we were in Avila Beach. It's a small cafe but the food was delicious. I had the local halibut and chips and it was great. My husband had the shrimp Louie salad and my MIL had the crab cakes. Both said their food was tasty. The young man that waited on us was super polite and friendly. The food was pretty good, dh had the seafood Philly and fries and I had the fish tacos then we switched halfway through. I couldn't finish half of it, it was a big portion. Liked sitting outside because I can look out at the dock of the bay all day so we liked the outdoor space. The waiter was nice and the service was fast. I've been going to "Fat Cats" since I lived down there (Sea Canyon) in the 1990's, it's the kind of place where i'd drive half the state just to eat... (And it have on several occasions where I had to have "Fat Cats", and I live in the North Bay Area). To me Fat Cats is not only comfort food it's an entire "Comfort Zone"... I've done business there, met friends, even taken more than one date there... The folks who run the place are more than nice, and tend to accommodate just about anything I have presented, from laptop to girlfriend... The food, man what can I say, everything that I have ordered has been excellent, and I am willing to bet that this holds true for the entire menu, but portions are more than enough, and certain items are only found and done right at Fat Cats, that's why I travel miles just to eat there... Fat Cats offers some of the best "Fish Tacos" and "Onion Rings" around if I were to recommend something that's a sure bet, you can't go wrong with the Fish Tacos... First of all I have to say that Gordon Ramsay would have a field day in this place. It was covered in flies and yellow jackets outside They have plastic spinners on the tables to keep them away but they did nothing. We moved inside to escape the bugs only to find more flies circling our table. The window had a broken screen full of spider webs. The walls and floors looked dirty. The decor was old and dirty as well. Example, was a collage of printed pictures of people's cats put in a cheap plastic poster sized frame and hung on the wall. Tacky. I was pretty skeeved out. I really wanted to leave but was super tired and my family wanted to stay, so I did. The service was mediocre at best. Took about 10 minutes for a server to even come greet us. We only saw him once to take the order, and once to give the check. Someone else delivered the food. No one came in between. The fries were hot and ok. the veggie burger was a little overcooked but fine. I was just so grossed out at how dirty the place was that I had a hard time enjoying my food. I just wanted to get out of there. I don't recommend it unless that's your vibe. Clearly plenty of people don't mind the filth. I was curious at how the kitchen looked, but too scared to find out. Walt from Walt's Adventures starting the day in Avila Beach, California. However, this cafe looks upon the beach town from the other side of the bay. It is my guarantee that it is well worth traveling to for its breakfast can only be described as perfect. The meal's presentation and taste were well constructed and conceived and the sausage patty was the best that I had the pleasure of consuming. The pancakes were fluffy with fresh fruit and the stuffed French Toast need not any syrup. 4 of 5 only because the Mimosas, not pictured, in my humble opinion, were strong, which is complimentary, but need additional OJ to reach perfection. I thought that in my adventuring of Avila Beach, I had seen all of the gems the area had to offer. Walked from our Duplex for a nice early dinner. We were seated right away. Seating was also available outside with lots of heaters. A waiter came and took our drink orders right away and then another waiter came by a few minutes later for our food orders. The special was Chile Rellenos which we all ordered. If you're anywhere near Avila Beach, you have to try this place. It's diner food, but who doesn't love a goody greasy spoon every now and then? Locates at the end of the beach in the parking lot for the Port San Luis Harbor, after eating you can walk the pier to let your food settle. We sat in the first available booth, which had a pillar blocking our view. After serving our drinks, our server Logan asked if we'd like to move to a booth with an unobstructed view. He quickly bussed and cleaned the table so we could move. If you're here on a cold day, heat comes magically from the wall by the windows! It was nice on a cold rainy day. The music playing was a great mix of hits from the 60s and 70s. Hubby had the ham and eggs, and a cinnamon roll, which he enjoyed. The frosting on the cinnamon roll has a cream cheese base, so it wasn't super sweet, but was tasty. I had the stuffed French toast, which came with strawberries and bananas. Food was great. Service was terrible. My husband first ordered an orange juice and his orange juice came back tasting like Grease we had to send back the drink. Any ordered water and got one glass of water on a $66 bill. It wasn't until after we were leaving and requested to go boxes for our food that they filled his water glass when they brought us the bill to pay for our meal. Fat Cats offers beautiful views, competent staff, and decent food at decent prices. The butterflied Gulf prawns were a little disappointing, but only because I know the real deal. Ain't nothing better than fresh Gulf shrimp. Not bad, just not what I had hoped they would be and nothing like you'd find on the Gulf Coast. The rice pilaf is excellent, with fresh vegetables. Some of the best I've ever had to be honest. I don't usually use cocktail sauce, but theirs is delicious and I did dip the shrimp into it. My fiancée's fish and chips was okay, with large portions. I noticed that those who ordered breakfast were getting huge portions, too. If everything had been as enjoyable as the rice pilaf it would have been a five star experience. A great local spot that my wife and I always hit up when we're in the Pismo Beach area. Not fine dining, but very comfortable comfort food. It's not fancy, but welcoming, with both inside and patio dining. The staff has always been very friendly and the service good. The best thing is the location. Fat Cats is on the edge of the parking lot to a working pier, and there are always good water views, moored boats, sea lions and people to watch! Good spot...make sure you check them out. read more

It's sad when you drive 4 hours from the valley to visit Morro Bay and the first place you want to visit is the place you usually always get great service and great food (because my husband fell in love with the fish n chips) but 1 waitress/hostess can ruin your whole happiness, lol.. not only did we not welcomed like normally, BUT others did, we were completely ignored and never got an apology for waiting 20 minutes when we were skipped over 4 times.. Per the picture I posted is the number of people who were seated before us when we were there before them ALL.. even after I let the young dark haired, braided pig tail, with black glasses know we were still waiting while she kept seating people behind us.. NEVER gotten this kind of service so was trying to be more understating but my husband noticed when he went up after 2 more tables were seated while we still sat and waited, of customers that were after us that there was a gap between our name and the old couple in front of us, looks like she was filling in names in between us and so we were being pushed back for seating, 20 min wait for this Asian while everyone who came behind us was seated and already getting serviced and enjoying their drinks.. Oh, when we were finally called, we were also blessed to be seated in the back table by their garbage area where they dump plates.. lol... we'll stay in Pismo or Morro Bay and enjoy and appreciate their food and service there, because we drove another 30 mins from Morro Bay and this experience left such a distaste where we couldn't enjoy our overpriced mimosas, our fish n chips that had absolutely no seasoning, my salty chowder, and over fried over fried French fries.. lol , .. thank you Caress for always having a beautiful smile and great service and maybr your management can promote you to train the ones who are weak at what they do, because service is everything and when someone is weak as the girl who took care of the seating today, was horrible and should be demoted to bus service because even he was better and more polite and welcoming.. good buy Fat Cats, never again read more

I used to love going to Fat Cats. The parents and I would meet there for lunches (Mom loved the shrimp cocktail back then when it was LOADED with shrimp), I'd meet Dad for lunch on his breaks from work nearby (he went for the burgers most days), and over the decades I've taken friends there as they visit the coast. The location is great, with ample parking, but I recently visited again after a very long hiatus, and was reminded why this formerly hot spot had fallen off our list: it was SO EXPENSIVE, understaffing made for slow and inattentive service, and the food really wasn't up to par either compared to it's old self or other offerings in the area. Now "expensive" is a relative term depending upon one's budget, but after-tax, your basic (very basic) fish and chips is running 20 bucks, sandwiches run $20-$30...for a SANDWICH. A side of onion rings alone: $11. Then add your tip. read more

Carl and his team do a fantastic job. As an Avila Local for nearly 25 years. Seeing how this town has flipped on its head since being discovered by the Two major cities and new "locals", it's refreshing to see Fat Cats remain the same comfy diner that it's always been. The food does it's job, I get the same Bacon Avocado omelette with sourdough and it's always solid. The chili verde sauce is wonderful as well. Fat cats is a decent little breakfast and lunch spot just north of Avila Beach. I am so happy that I stopped in here, my family is loud and we fit in just fine here. The kids enjoyed their food and I enjoyed my club sandwich and french fries. The seafood lobster stuffed baked potato was a real fun side. They charge $10 for a Mamosa and they put about a whole bottle in each one. It is such a yummy fun surprise We walked to the pier and checked out some sea lions and some crabs being sold. On vacation and had to try a local favorite! Fat Cats has been a local favorite since 1985...and I know why. The bacon avocado omelette was perfection! Served with the tomato & cottage cheese I requested, it was such a filling breakfast. The service was top notch...I never wanted for anything! The servers were willing to stop and chat, and checked in with us every few minutes. Such a great view of the Port San Luis bay. And cute cat pictures sprinkled through the little cafe!
