I think i found my breakfast spot when my family is in town. With that said, let's talk about how we got to this point. If you've been following along on the journey, you know I was trying to keep this trip cheap. At least I was. Now, I'm just trying to salvage it with one last attempt at a reasonably priced restaurant. I suggested 2 places that didn't look too bad, one of which was The Hungry Fisherman. For whatever reason, my wife wasn't interested in either. A third option was a place at the end of Embarcadero that we first went to during covid. My thing was, we have a dog and I don't want to eat outside. It's cold and one place only seats people with pets outside. But since we've been there and my wife was mistaking it for another, she wanted to go there anyways. I guess we will leave the dog in the car? Idk. I come inside and we are looking at 30+ min. What if we take it to go? 20 min. What if we call it in? 20 min. Apparently, if you want to make a to-go order, you have to wait for the 2 servers to find the time to take your order in between waiting their tables. But I'm ranting about another restaurant that we didn't even stay at. But that's how we ended up here. I feel like when I parked, others were arriving at the same time, so I rushed in and grabbed a table. The sign says seat yourself, so we got the largest table there. It seated 8 and while I waited for my family to come in, I was hoping I didn't look odd sitting there by myself. Fortunately my family came quick and we got started. Looking at everything, the menu isn't expansive, but there were a lot of good looking options. I was split between the chicken fried steak and the chile verde burrito. I'm a little picky about my chile verde since it can either be too spicy or bland. Morro Bay isn't known for its Mexican population as far as I can tell, and I've been seriously disappointed in chile verde when it isn't cooked by natives. But since there is a page dedicated just to Mexican food, and the waitresses are off Latin descent, I give the chile verde burrito a go. Especially after I ask our waitress for her opinion. I'm glad I did because it exceeded all expectations. The avocado, the salsa, sour cream, it all just worked so well together. I got about 3/4 of the way with it and my daughter finished the rest. She also agreed it was good. My wife got the French toast, which was a bad idea. Not because it wasn't good, she loved it. But because bread makes her sugar spike, and the consequences came strong less than an hour later. To give you perspective, the tortilla on a burrito makes it spike. She knows what it does to her but she does it anyways. No fault of the restaurant. This one was on her. It must have been worth it because she finished her leftovers after her sugar crashed soon after. Everyone else loved their food as well. One thing I wasn't aware of is that they serve cinnamon coffee. When I got my first refill, she asked if I wanted cinnamon. You can be excused for not knowing since I don't even see coffee on the menu, let alone cinnamon. I must have had at least 3 cups in the less than 40 min we were there. Looking around the inside, it's very nice inside. It's not ritzy by any means, but I did enjoy looking around inside. We also discovered a now binge-worthy show to watch that was playing behind us-Worse Cooks In America. I hooked that out was on so patrons would appreciate the good food in front of them. Also on the way out, looking inside the cooking area -all Mexicans. So it makes sense that the food was so authentic. Like I said, we will be back. Great handicapped parking options. Quick service with comfortable bench seats at booths. Only one refill on soda, so order water if you drink a lot with your meal like I do. Credit card processing fee and no print receipt options. Recently ordered a cheeseburger and chicken strips and fries and a salad. Chicken was awful, a spongy approximation of chicken, but it was cooked well. Worried that my blue cheese dressing was not cold, but didn't get sick. Ranch dressing for the chicken was colder. I ordered my soda to be delivered with my meal so I got my refill while I was still eating. Not much ice, had to move more from my water. Also soda a bit flat (might be because it is Pepso?) Fries were great, hot and crispy. I salted them myself and ate with Ranch. The burger was warm but a bit thinner than I have had here before. The bun was nice. Definitely will return here again and pay cash, just won't order the chicken strips!! read more

After a fun time at Cal Poly for parents weekend , we drove out to Morro Bay. It was a foggy day, but still beautiful, and we were delighted to stumble on the Hungry Fisherman. We were greeted by Lady Liberty out front, and walked in to discover a very nice quiet, clean diner-style restaurant. Our family of five sat at the large table in the center, and we were greeted immediately with waters for everybody. We ordered the veggie scramble, clam chowder soup, oatmeal, the bacon avocado omelette, grilled salmon salad, and a side of bacon. The bacon was cooked perfectly, portions were generous, and the clam chowder was warm and creamy. The breakfast potatoes were cooked perfectly, Everything was delicious! Some families have their "every Sunday morning breakfast place", well this is it for our family! My parents live in Morro Bay, so whenever we are visiting, we head on over to The Hungry Fisherman on Sundays before church. Service is so friendly and welcoming! I love they way the staff all treat my parents and how happy they are to see us each time we are with them. We have only been their for breakfast but the entire menu is always so tempting and delicious looking! Some of our favorite breakfast items are the scrambles (my parents fave is Popeyes Scramble), we've tried several and the veggie and the country scrambles are some we order quite often. I also love the Bacon Avocado and Cheese omelet. Eggs aren't always my "thing" however and at times I've reached for the French toast or the pancakes and they have not disappointed! Decent sized helpings yet not huge, small appetites could probably share if you wanted to (like my parents, LOL). Keep in mind that breakfast is served all day!! But also keep in mind that their lunch and dinner menus are chock full of tempting offers! Prices will run you around $15 per person. The place has a homey feel to it, not divey just homey. Parking is on the street or around back. Close enough to the Embarcadero that you can walk off your meal, or walk up an appetite! This wasn't our original choice. We come to Morro Bay near our anniversary in December. The place that we wanted to go (and have our anniversary dinner every year) was only taking reservations because of the "boat parade." Well shucks. Irritating. We started driving up on Beach street and we remembered a place that we had gotten lunch to go years ago (and, as we remembered, it was good)! That place is the subject of this review. The Hungry Fisherman." Look, it doesn't have the romantic atmosphere, although it's pretty coastal kitsch (stuffed fish, seafaring paintings). The service was OUTSTANDING. Very, very attentive to you. The food is AMAZING. And lots of it! Get the onion rings as an appetizer. You won't regret it. LOTS of rings (usually places get miserly on the portions) and battered to perfection. They were HOT! Right out of the fryer. Clam chowder was good too and I know it was fresh clams. How? The sand that still lingered on them! Hey that's FRESH! Wife got the seafood fettuccine and there's TONS of pasta, clams, shrimp, scallops and white fish. I got the seafood combination plate. Fish, calamari, shrimp, scallops. It was all deep fried, so I don't know if you would like that. We both had food to go and there will be more meals out of what we ordered. My husband and I camped for 2 days on the beach and then stayed an extra day to explore the town. Today is our last morning before we drive back to the Bay Area and stopped at the hungry fisherman because it was right near our hotel. We love a good diner breakfast and this place did not disappoint. Seems like it is family run which is always a plus. My husband ordered the steak and eggs and he said the steak was super flavorful and good! I ordered the country fried steak and eggs because it is my favorite breakfast. I have been sick a majority of this trip but when I saw gravy UNDER the fried steak all my worries and doubts went away. What a wonderful surprise :D. The biscuits were buttery and soft. We were looking forward to eating here after reading reviews-I am guessing the good reviews are from the breakfast menu? Unfortunately we were disappointed in dinner. I ordered steak and it shouldn't be on the menu. It was very bland, instant potatoes for the side. I expected a pan fried steak but had no flavor, no seasoning, poor quality meat. The fish and chips here are just really good. Can't honestly tell if it's the coating or the tartar sauce but a rare taste at least for me. Friendly service. The ambience is casual with outside seating in case you brought your dog. read more

I've always had a great experience here, I've been a customer, visiting 1-2 times per year, since around 2008. I've seen their recent renovations and it looks great. Service has always been good even when they are super crowded, it's nice to come when it's not so crowded as well. we've hung out in MB for the much of the last 5 years and had heard about the hungry fisherman but never tried it. finally decided to try it for lunch/breakfast today and were very surprised at how good the food, service, and ambiance was. All we wanted was a good cheeseburger w onion rings. So we walked from downtown to The Hungry Fisherman. It was a a satisfying meal for my husbands birthday. We sat at a comfy booth, immediately asked if we wanted our drinks first, we ordered and were served pretty quick. Onion rings and zucchini sticks were piping hot and crispy batter. Big burgers. Went here on a whim, seen the reviews and was rated highly but that wasn't the case. Wife ordered the crab cake Benedict, and I got the pork chops n eggs while both of us got the clam chowder. She had two bites of her food and immediately said nope, and my chops came out under cooked. Seating good, can tell it was old but still comfy. Service was quick though, almost a little too quick. For where we were at, it seemed like the sea food was almost canned maybe, like Campbell's soup possibly. Really wanted this place to be good but no, sadly it wasn't. read more

Went here today and it wasn't crowded when we showed up about 9:30 on a Saturday. Everyone was very friendly, especially our server, unfortunately didn't get her name, but she had of black glasses. I had the carnitas special with hash browns. My husband had bacon, avocado cheese omelette Al's with hash browns. He also asked for an English muffin. Their referral was very much appreciated as we found a clean, bright and inviting restaurant. The service was prompt and attentive. Our choices, a Hamburger and the Sandpiper sandwich were tasty and pleasing. Both came with a generous portion of fries. This place seems to be a local favorite as I noticed several customers interacting with the waitresses. Returned for the second time and we were just super impressed by the young dark haired waitress! She was thorough, sweet, and went the extra mile offering my husband water after she could tell how tired he was (he'd completed a CrossFit competition day before) - food was absolutely delicious! Bacon not undercooked like SOOOOOO many other breakfast restaurants do, and the eggs were cooked perfectly! Pancakes and French Toast? Equally amazing!
