Braised pork with pickled red onions sandwich! That's all you need to know about Fat Cheeks Hawaii, as they're the only ones in town that can make this quality sandwich. Outstanding!
What an odd name for a restaurant! When I asked why the owners chose this name, I was told that it was just a passing thought that sounded cute. And it is! I initially had mistakenly thought it was the Fat Chicks Burgers, formerly at the Waiehu Golf Course and now a food truck in Wailuku, Maui. Sounds similar, but they're two separate entities.
Opened in Nov. 2018 at the Ohana Hale Marketplace, Fat Cheeks Hawaii serves a fusion of Asian and Latin cuisine of sandwiches, rice bowls, a few main dishes of chuck steak and whole fish, and some sides. Prices are very reasonable. Here's what I've tried thus far:
* Papa's Pig Sandwich. This sandwich consists of braised pork belly, garlic avocado spread, queso fresco cheese, and picked red onions on a homemade sesame bread. The braised pork was so tender and soft that it just melts in your mouth, and it was so tasty. The pickled red onions were sautéed and not crunchy, so they complemented the pork well. The avocado spread and cheese added to the deliciousness of the sandwich. The homemade bun made it a perfect 10! I would order this again and again, as this sandwich is a keeper, as it is so heavenly to eat! For take-out orders, the sandwich is wrapped in a butcher-like white paper and sealed with a cute piggy with fat cheeks sticker.
* Whole Fish. The pompano, which I believe is in the papio family, was roasted in basil, Chinese parsley, citrus, and other herbs. The toppings on the fish were lots of Chinese parsley, red onions and celery. The fish was very moist and flavorful. It was served with a side of butter rice, which was based on the owner's mother's recipe using guajillo chili peppers; this was very tasty.
* Mini Cornbread Loaf. Served with butter, this cornbread was flavorful and delicious! Real cornbread made with lots of cornmeal, which is how I like it.
You can take out or eat in at the cute "penny" counter, with pennies laminated onto the counter (brings back memories of a similar "penny" floor at the now-closed iDcard office at Ward Warehouse).
Credit is given to its owners, who are great cooks in their own right, with the cuisines of their heritage roots. Levina Moy is the star owner here, whose family is in the restaurant industry and owns China Pearl in Boston, the oldest dim sum and Cantonese restaurant there. She met her husband, Jared Brown, at the Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island (he currently owns the popular Garibaldi's Pizza right around the corner at Ohana Hale Marketplace). She pursued baking, and has work experiences in the Bakery Dept. at Whole Foods and at the Michelin-rated The Modern in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Levina also has a passion for event planning and catering. After seeing an ad for restaurant entrepreneurs at Ohana Hale Marketplace, both Levina and Jared took that opportunity to move to Hawaii. And the rest is history.
Levina is very friendly and personable when you talk to her. She'll explain more about her menu items if you ask. And so is her husband, Jared. Both husband and wife initially had one food booth, but Jared eventually obtained his own booth around the corner to specialize in his delicious pizzas. They make a good team, as when Levina has to step away, husband Jared will pitch in for her.
Downsides? There are times when both Levina and Jared may be doing a catering event, so both are not at their booths. Just that you don't know when this happens until you are at their booths. Secondly, I wish that Levina had the time to bake her breads and have them available for sale as she once did when her booth first opened. She's an excellent baker, and hopefully she will be able to hire staff so that she will have the time to bake and expand her menu.
Hours of operation are: Tues. to Sat. 10:30a - 7:30p; Sun. 10:30a - 4:30p, Mon. closed.
Yes, I will definitely be back, especially for their delicious pork belly sandwich and hopefully for their breads when Levina starts to sell them. The owners are certainly on the right track in achieving their goal of opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant of their own. Highly recommended! read more
