I've had soup dumplings all over the world. I'd compare the original soup dumplings here favorably to the best ones I've had in Taipei. These are larger than the ones in Taipei, but just as rich and savory. My daughter had the sweet and sour chicken, and it was very good. The owner chatted with us and said they use pineapple juice instead of syrup, which gives it an amazing flavor. The pork and chive soup dumplings were also amazing. They had exactly the right amount of spice, not too much or too little. They were a big hit with the family. I highly recommend the crispy chicken wings, too. These soup dumplings are legit. I've tried soup dumplings at other spots in Austin, but the dumpling's dough is always just a tad too thick and not as silky as Fat Dragon's. The Soup Dumplings hardly had soup in them. It was such a disappointment. The soup itself was nothing special. This is the reason we tried this restaurant! Chinese Lo Mien is very salty! Couldn't even stomach to swallow one spoon serving. The tonkatsu Ramen's broth was such a let down. The egg was cold too! The piece of meat was too thick. Everything is just wrong! Also, I saw an older man, probably the owner touching the brims of the cups with his fingers repeatedly then put them with the other clean cups. We ate today and will never again eat here. Excellent Chinese food. Fat Dragon has very friendly staff, easy ordering system and above all else, fantastic food. There's something for everyone and the flavor is off the charts. My wife and I ordered a tonkotsu ramen and a jumping fish. The jumping fish is silky tender fish fillets, delicately poached with a chili soy sauce. It's just tingly enough spicy to peak your interest, but is a light and refreshing dish. There's a bed full of vegetables underneath too for a complete meal. It might seem a bit expensive, but they give you a LOT of fish. The tonkotsu ramen was also a very pleasant surprise. I must admit I didn't have a high expectation for it, but it was also very good. Not too fatty, but very deep and complex broth, a nice runny soft boiled soy marinated egg, some fatty pork belly that melts in your mouth and very chewy, springy alkaline noodles that were a perfect match for the broth. Honestly, I would dare to say its better than even a lot of dedicated ramen shops in Austin, so that's really saying something. They have many other dishes I can't wait to come back and try: particularly the xiao long bao. Beef with Green Onion was fantastic! They just opened about 2 weeks ago and it was great. You go up to the bar area to order and then enjoy! The owner and wife are really nice! Our daughter was a huge fan of the beef too! The Kung Pao Chicken was ok. I'm normally not a fan at all- so it was better than most! Ambiance is easy and relaxed. They have 2 TVs going as well. So far, everything we've had here is delicious. My partner is Taiwanese and was raised in a restaurant and this is the closest thing to his parents' food that we've found so far in Austin. That said, I can only speak for the more traditional Chinese dishes as that's what we generally have. (The lady seemed downright excited for us to have the Ma Po Tofu, and immediately started talking to my partner in Mandarin as if this was bulletproof evidence that, for sure, this guy speaks Mandarin--and, in her defense, he does.) I suspect these dishes are going to be what they do best. I wouldn't go out of my way to order ramen or Korean dishes from them. * Ma Po Tofu: Compared to the utterly criminal Ma Po Tofu I've had at other restaurants, this was really good. It has the complexity and touch of aromatics I've been craving and yet until now was unable to find. * Pork Soup Dumplings: I didn't taste these, but my partner said they were great. Same for the fried ones. * Scallion Pancakes: Good. A little bit oily and flat, not quite as flaky as I like, but I haven't had good scallion pancakes in a restaurant yet, so I'm cool with it. They didn't come with a dip/sauce though. * Coconut Milk and Chocolate Dumplings: Oh my god, I love these so much. My partner liked them too despite usually not being a big desserts guy. The outside is a standard dumpling wrap, which gives them a great chew without adding too much sweetness. The inside is full of liquid chocolate and coconut milk. LOVE them. Overall happy with the value and quality for the price of the food. Service is fine and the lady in charge is always kind to us. Where they lack is on...almost everything else. The restaurant itself is in a pretty old building comparable to other buildings on that strip where everything feels a bit dilapidated. There isn't much (or any) ambiance or decor to speak of. Personally, I don't care about this; the space is comfortable and that's good enough for me. I was, however, very disappointed by the use of disposables in lieu of actual silverware and dishes, and am removing a star mostly for that. Not only does it feel cheap and awkward to eat soup out of a plastic tub, it's also immensely wasteful/environmentally unfriendly to have to use an entire styrofoam bowl for soy sauce. The disposable spoon was also sharp enough to be scratchy in my mouth, and weak enough that it bent in my rice. We wanted a pot of tea, but that's now self-served from a large heated container with a spigot. I dislike this, as the tea was much too strong for my taste. The floor in this area was also very sticky, presumably from drips and spills. WARNINGS: The paper towel dispenser in the ladies room will knock you out if you're not careful; I slammed my head against it on the way in and then again on the way out. After seeing countless other foodies visiting this place, I had to see what was up for myself. I drove up from San Marcos (an hour + drive with traffic) and brought a friend with me. We ordered the cream cheese puffs, cheeseburger egg rolls, pork belly buns, original xiao long bao, and the coconut creamy milk chocolate dumplings. Was the drive worth it? Absolutely. The xiao long bao from this place were probably the best I've ever had! The broth was so flavorful. Those were my favorite dish, but were almost beat out by the chocolate dumplings. I've never had anything like them and if you're going to try one new item here, it's these lol. I loved that they were bite sized and I could just pop them (literally) in my mouth. All of the other dishes were wonderful and delicious as well! The pork belly was crispy and I loved the texture of it with the soft bun. Cream cheese puffs are sometimes hit or miss, but the ones here were definitely a hit! I saw another yelp comment about the interior not being updated, but honestly, it's restaurants that look like this that have the best food. The decor may be of an older style, but this place was really clean, the food was delicious, and the owner/employees were all really kind, and that's what matters. After reading other Yelp reviews I wanted to give Fat Dragon a try. You order at the counter and get a table number to dine in. I had the chicken in garlic sauce, general tsao's chicken, and the mala spicy dumplings. Utterly delicious. This is an authentic Chinese restaurant so expect large portions that can be shared as a family. The menu is impressive. I suggest looking at there menu online first as they offer many things you will not find at other restaurants. I will for sure be back to try other dishes. read more

Love the food- especially the dumplings! Lately the customer service hasn't been that great. A lady that runs the register (interacted with her twice now) is just a little too rude (I can handle some heat). Gave my name and it was under my spouses and she immediately snapped that I was at the wrong restaurant. Saw her snapping at another gentleman who didn't speak much English. The fact that they are still set up like the beginning of COVID is annoying enough... like serving in to-go boxes and plastic silverware and such, but that's not their problem. I took my daughter to the restroom and had to wipe poop remnants off the toilet seat, the bathroom itself hadn't been cleaned in years it seems, the toilet actually didn't even flush. This place has seriously delicious food! I've tried a variety of things - pickled mustard rice cakes, shrimp stuffed eggplant, soup dumplings, honey chicken - it's all amazing. Never had anything I haven't liked. They have a really varied menu though I've only tried the Chinese foods. They do have a number of Japanese items and some Thai and Korean inspired items as well. Also you have to get the dessert dumplings - chocolate and coconut milk - not sure which is my favorite but they are both beyond delicious. One thing to note - the food doesn't automatically come with rice. I'm ok with this cause it means more room for the good stuff but if you want steamed rice, order it separately! read more

My spouse and I have eaten at Fat Dragon 5 times. Ready to buy their t- shirt (ha ha). There are several vegetarian options and the tofu is always fresh and tender. The food is only served to go and is fresh and hot. Cream cheeses puffs? The best. Real crab and never greasy. Soup dumplings are great but very chewy. My spouse loved the veggie ones. They are spicy but only with flavor, not heat. The staff are as sweet as can be, too! Even the white sauce on the plain veggie dish is flavorful and the best in Austin. I really wanted to like this place. I really did. Ordered some apps and 4 entrees from Fat Dragon off Favor, so I'm taking into consideration that to-go food is not the same quality as fresh. Apps were great. The lamb and juicy pork dumplings were hot and flavorful. I'm glad they classify "crab rangoon" as "cream cheese puffs" because we all know there's no crab in them anyway. The entrees though.... I added one note under one of the entrees that we'd like it spicy. I don't know if someone misread this but all 4 of the entrees were delivered very spicy. One was so spicy that even my spice-loving friend couldn't eat more than a couple bites. You know... the level of spicy where things go from "wow this is hot" to "this is going to hurt coming out" to "dear God please make it stop"? All 4 entrees were nearly inedibly hot. But what was most disappointing was the treatment of the Favor driver. She called me to specify which sauce we wanted for the order, but I had no idea what she was talking about since none of this info was listed correctly on the menu. Then she texted me saying the dessert we ordered was out of stock. No problem. She then explains that one of the women who worked there was "yelling at her" and "being extremely rude" over the out-of-stock dessert. I asked if she is mistreated often and she replied, "only at that restaurant." The place is not much to look at. Old furniture and they serve everything in disposable plates. But hiding behind that old/rundown appearance is a an explosion of flavor and great service. Their long list of options from Korean,Japanese and Chineese plates coupled with great taste and flavor makes it a great restaurant to either pickup/to go (which seems their main mode of operation) or dine in. Their wonton in chilli sauce is awesome, dumplings were some of the best we have tried, chicken in garlic sauce , kimchi with fried rice and beef with green onions were great! I think this place is ok. The dumpling skins are thicker than I prefer. I took out some food last night and was not happy to find out today that it's missing one of the main ingredients- the woodear mushrooms! I just paid aound $12 for beef and bean sprouts in an okay but generic sauce (tastes similar to moo goo gai pan)- this is not encouraging me to go back. It seems too expensive for what I've tried so far. There's other places that I can get the same or better for cheaper. Soup dumplings I can get much better for not that much more; it's just more inconvenient, which is probably better for my wallet. Update to owner's response: You either need to update your online menu, learn your menu better, or if you don't have something, warn the customer on the phone that you don't have it (photo is from your website that I looked at to order on the phone from). I like good food. Sometimes I spend $$, sometimes I spend $. If the taste is the same, but quality of ingredients is better, I understand paying more. This is a hole in a wall kind of place so ambiance and service was never in the expectation but I used to love the food here. Lately though the quality and the quantity of the food has gone down while they started charging prices that are different from what's on the menu. On my recent lunch trip I paid ~$15 for a bowl of Dan Dan noodles ( used to be my favorite item there) that was served to me cold and almost half the quantity of the noodles(not well cooked). This was my favorite place to go before covid. It was so welcoming there were always special Facebook deals and they always interacted with people in the restaurant and threw Facebook. The decorations always kept my kids attention. But now it's so unwelcoming and dirty and hot. The one women there is very snappy over the phone and in person.
