Our first visit was so good. Calm colors design reminds you of a sea. Service is excellent and friendly. All food is home cooked, not store bought. We have started with soup of the day and guacamole with chips, both were great choices! And then we ordered chicken quesadillas, and bunch of tacos: blackened fish (my favorite!), big bang shrimp, portable, spicy shrimp, chicken and specials of the day chicken with apples. Finally! A killer taco spot near Montclair. I can go on about the flavor of the braised pork taco, the marinade of the mahi or great chips and guacamole. After years of hitting every taqueria on the west coast this is as good as you can get in NJ. And as far as fish tacos you'll have to go Point Lobster in Point Pleasant to get anything as good. We love fish tacos and have found few and far between places that do it well. This place does it well. Portions were nice and I saw that people thought it was pricey but we didn't. A small bowl of chips and salsa complimentary would be nice. I had a bang bang shrimp taco and mahi taco. The fish could use some seasoning but was still good. Shrimp was a good size and delicious. We were at a local tavern for some beers but wanted something different to eat. So I Yelped some places close by and Fat Fish Taco came up. We decided to walk on down and boy are we happy we did. We ordered the Nachos to start and they were delicious then we each has 2 tacos. The steak and chicken. Both were amazing and full of flavor. We got talking with the owner and my husband asked whats a good spicy taco and he recommended the shrimp. I was only allowed a bit because hubby inhaled it. We didn't plan on getting dessert but the owner mentioned the Key Lime Pie and it was on the house. We thought we weren't fans as we are more chocolate cake/brown type of people but WOW. It was one of the best pies I have ever had. We can't wait to go back. Oh and it's BYOB which is always a plus in my book. Great service and owner. Support this local business! read more

A group of us from my office ordered take-out for lunch on April 29, 2016. I had the Baja taco and the Buffalo Shrimp taco. The beer battered cod was fresh, non greasy and generous. The cilantro lime sauce is delicious! The buffalo shrimp was very spicy, cooled slightly by the cilantro lime sauce. I would definitely dine from here again. read more

I have tried almost every taco on the menu over the last two weeks and I can honestly say that these are some of the most unique flavor combinations I have seen and tasted. Amazing. When you walk in and the servers are in checked button down shirts and there is John Mayer playing, you don't really get that authentic taco place feel, but I guess that's probably okay for the where they are located. ;) It's a little overpriced for what it is. the meat was greasy, the burrito lacked any real flavor and from the kids menu I ordered my daughter a chicken taco and for $8 we got a few pieces of chicken with a few shreds of cheese in a small taco with nothing else (no sides, nothing). *shrug* There are too many really delicious authentic taco places in this area to go back here. First impression I thought of Fat Fish Taco was that it is very clean and kind of reminds me of the shore. Our waiter, Luis was very nice and funny! He provided us with exceptional service! Now the food...I had gotten the skirt steak and blackened fish taco, my girlfriend had gotten the shrimp and skirt steak taco. The tacos were phenomenal! My favorite is definitely the skirt steak, very juicy, very tender, and just overall the best steak taco I've had anywhere around this area. Excellent. Nachos are a must to start, especially with the blackened shrimp! Their spicy cilantro lime shrimp salad was so yummy and fresh. And don't leave without trying their key lime pie for dessert! Delicious refreshing taste with a wonderful crumbly crust. Service was great and decor was upbeat and fun with a good crowd for lunch. Also, it's BYO, so if you bring wine, they've got no problem with that and will set up glasses for you. Fat Fish Taco is EXTREMELY inconsistent. We enjoyed the restaurant when it first opened and the location was so convenient. We returned a few times and the food was very different from the first visit. Don't even get me started on take-out (Its like I ordered from a different restaurant all together). I decided to give them one more chance the other week and ordered a chicken torta sandwich. The person on the phone said they do not make torta sandwiches after 4pm. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!? There is a lot written below about their delicious take on the modern taco, and I concur wholeheartedly. I ordered the Buffalo Shrimp with a little hesitation, but came away impressed. It was flavorful, but not over-the-top. The grilled Mahi was flaky and moist, indicative of the best of Cali-Mex, right here in Jersey. However, listen... what I really want to talk about is their uncommon service. We all make mistakes, but it's how we recover from them that can really set us apart. When I arrived for lunch, the place was buzzing, yet there was no one around to seat me. I strode up to the counter in the back where a man whom I believe to be the chef-owner finally greeted me. I sat at a back table with menu and waited for about 8-9 mins before i went back up to the counter to place my order. The chef-owner was clearly surprised and apologetic that a server never came by. Frankly, it wasn't that big a deal for me and I wasn't in a rush, so I made nothing of it. In retrospect, I believe the server who was supposed to wait on my table mistakenly thought I was a takeout customer just waiting for my food. Nevertheless, it was nice to see the owner cared. He brought out my food personally, and as i wrote above, it was delicious. I was genuinely satisfied and full... but it doesn't end there. When I asked for the check, the owner stated that my meal would be comped because the service was not up to his standards. I responded back that it wasn't necessary and that everything was fine, but he again insisted and finally prevailed. I left Fat Fish Taco, into a crisp, spring afternoon, with a full stomach and a sheepish smile on my face. Needless to say, the free lunch was really nice, but much more than that, it felt uncommonly good to be valued as a customer when you least expect it. read more

One of the best restaurants in the area. Nicely decorated beautiful and clean room. Great music and laid back vibe. Food is amazing. Guac and chips are delicious. Fresh, creamy, chunky, not too salty. Everything I've ordered here is great. Tacos have tons of food, one is filling, but they're so good I have to keep eating. The Baja is best, huge piece of fish, cooked perfect, not too greasy. Shrimp is fresh and flavorful and not too spicy. Salsa also fresh and delicious. Small store front on the main drag in Caldwell with a friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. The menu is simple and to the point . It's taco's, bowls and sides. Our waiter Mark was friendly and helped with our selections. The Baja taco with the deep fried cod was wonderful and very flavorful . However, as good as that was the pork was even better. I genuinely HATE coming here. The food is fantastic but the service is complete garbage. There is only one waiter that actually works and does a great job. The other waitresses are basically useless. The only thing they are good for is giving dirty looks and choosing who they take orders from. I would never do this but this is the SECOND time I was sitting down at this restaurant for over 10 mins watching a waitress do nothing but sit on her phone in the back. The same waitress came right to the table next to me, who sat down after me, took his order, and proceeded to ignore us. When asked if someone could take our order the hostess brushed it off and said "we're very busy". It's funny because I confronted her about the waitress skipping us and she said "it wasn't her problem." It's just downright rude. If the food wasn't good, I would never eat here again. I've eaten here a few times and honestly I did enjoy the food. However, when I ordered lunch for a small work event (6 people) it was the worse experience I ever had. I'm hoping something happened like they lost power but I'm not sure. I placed the order. They called me right away and said they were out of one of the menu items. They were kind and patient and let me call them back with a replacement. Everything was good. Then I got an text and email that my order was cancelled. I called back and someone picked up the phone and hung up. I kept calling just to get a busy signal. So disappointing. I don't think I'll be returning even if I did enjoy the food. Food was decent but a bit expensive. $6 a taco and you pretty much need 3 for a dinner. The service was very slow and disorganized. We sat at our table for 5 min without being greeted and watching a waitress walk back and fourth by us. It was almost comical. Finally a waiter came from somewhere brought us water and took our order. The whole time I'm observing what is either a manager or owner (I'm guessing) behind the bar area talking to two diners at the bar. (Not sure why they have a bar there without a liquor license but whatever).
