Another totally solid and impressive eatery in downtown Caldwell. Beachy, California / Baja feeling taco joint with a straight forward, reliable menu. Keeping with the fat fish, I went with the Baja tacos and fish tacos, at the bargain price of $6 each. Living up the the name of this place, the tacos delivered on fatness. The Baja came with a massive piece of fried cod deliciousness, so large I could barely manage to eat it (but fear not... I managed). The spicy shrimp were plump little fellows, nicely blackened in seasoning, and again, a generous portion of seafood delights. Such a cool find! Been here only twice with my famiLy and have yet to be disappointed! They have an extensive fish menu (obviously) and a cozy small space. This was around 6/13/2020. Really felt like a waste of money. Got pork, chicken, mahi tacos. Chicken and mahi were good but the pita they use is a gross cheap kind I've bought at Wegmans before. It falls apart and tastes odd. Really disappointed. Came in super cheap white styrofoam boxes. When I walked in I was stopped by a table at the front door. They (3+ of them) stared at me for a few seconds, then one girl got up annoyedly as if she needed to get back to whatever she was doing on her phone. Walked over and gave me my order and immediately walked away rather than making sure I got what I ordered (which I didn't) or if I had any questions. This place is A+ You can't go wrong with the service, and they always have great specials. If you are a Dave Matthews fan you will love this place. Every time I have been here Dave's songs have been blaring over the speakers. They make great burritos and bowls, but are known for their tacos. Yes the tacos are pricey, yes the tacos are overstuffed, worth it? Meh. I would prefer less stuff, so my tacos wouldn't fall apart as I am eating. That's probably the minority response, but this is my review ;). The taste? Loved the Baja, but was not a fan of the steak, which is typically my favorite kinda taco. My hubs liked the bang bang shrimp the most and said his buffalo one was overpowering. Service, as first timers it was a bit odd. We were told where to sit. We proceeded to sit there at a completely empty table, without menus for 5 minutes before our server brought us menus. How hard would it have been for the young guy to hand us menus???? If we lived closer we may come back, but not worth the 20 minute drive for us. read more

Visited Fat Fish for the first time today for lunch with a coworker who has a thing for tacos! Really tastefully decorated space, acoustics were a bit rough so as soon as the space filled out it was pretty loud. Arrived at 11:45am, first ones in for lunch. Order of homemade chips and salsa to start, however we wanted the guac and it wasn't ready yet. Bit of a bummer as I assumed if your open you should have a simple item like guac prepped. Space filled out by 12:15pm! Oh well, moving on. Nice selection of tacos that are a la carte. Tacos are a good size, they use larger size tortillas than your average street vendors. My coworker ordered two and she was perfectly happy. I ordered the cilantro lime salad with spicy shrimp that definitely had authority. Lightly dressed salad but good. Service was great, atmosphere is great, bummer about the guac (sorry- I know I'm tough but come on !!). Would definitely come back. read more

So many other authentic joints like a certain one right off Eagle Rock Ave in WO that is fabulous, their rice too is great actually everything we've gotten there is spices to perfection and delicious. Today I came here with my sister and a friend because we wanted to try somewhere new. It wasn't great and it wasn't bad. Environment When we got there it was right when dinner rush normally starts in any restaurant. It is a cute nice location that has parking behind the restaurant. There's plenty of seating and they have some seating along the counter. Food It was pretty good. It has a decent portion of filling and had some great flavors but is wasn't anything special. In my view the flavors were there. The skirt steak has a slight kick to it. The pork belly was tender and juicy. The bang bang shrimp spice level seem to be milder than the grill steak. Overall they're weren't bad. Price It is definitely pricy. You are looking to spend at least 6-8 dollars on one taco. It does taste good but it not spectacular to spend that amount Service Here was the downfall. When we got there it wasn't busy at all. One table was finishing up and a gentleman getting closed out at the counter. We didn't get a greeting or was told to wait. We were clueless if we should sit ourselves or if there was table service. The waitress didn't mention anything so we just stood and waited for a little. After finally being seated we order a few tacos just to try it out. I originally wanted to order more but I wanted to pace myself since I tend to eat with my eyes and not with my brain or stomach. After we ordered, our food came out very quickly which was great! However, we never got checked on or our waters refilled. We finally got check on at the end with our bill. Or waitress didn't ask if we wanted anything else so we didn't order anymore and paid for what we got. We wanted to do separate check but since there bill came and she wrote each person's amount we just wrote our cards in to each spot. Our waitress was annoyed with the 3 different cards and then eyed us after we paid. Keep in mind I haven't seen my friend for a while and I was on my last few days of break from grad school. There were plenty of seats so I didn't see any harm in staying a little longer to chat. But we had daggering eyes at us from our waitress and not a single refill in beverages. So we left to calandra across the street. My friend, sister and I felt uncomfortable with our waitress staring at us with frustration. Overall I don't think I'll be coming back. The food wasn't bad. They had great flavors, tender meats, and great combinations. The shell can get soggy but they gave me two for the grill skirt steak since it was a corn tortilla. However it is a little pricey for what it's worth. But what made my decision was the service. I don't like getting daggering eyes if there's plenty of tables that were open and being felt like we were getting rushed out. We would have order more because my sister was still hungry but we continue our meal at another establishment where we knew we wouldn't be pushed out. Incredibly delicious tacos! Don't expect only the usual Mexican fare, although they have that too. The chef and owner, Steve Benyo, creates tacos with a great array of divergent flavors. Example: The Fried Chicken Taco is a spicy white meat chicken, served with a delicious roasted corn salsa, and topped with what tasted like a cilantro/lime crema. It was out of this world! The everyday menu has many great offerings, but the specials are where Steve gets to show his creativity and talent, and that's where this restaurant really shines. read more

Really average. The portion size is too large, it's impossible to eat. Baja fish taco was not crispy and the veg was cheap... shredded iceberg lettuce, pale tomatoes, zero spice whatsoever. Bang bang shrimp taco had ok flavors, but cheap ingredients too, including pineapple that obviously came from a can. Pork belly taco sounded amazing but was inedible. Both of us threw it out after one bite because it was tough and grizzly. It's obviously they tried to cook it fast when pork belly needs to be slow cooked to render the fat and tenderize the meat. They didn't let any liquid run off so the tortillas turned to mushy paste. All in all, ok flavors but they need to seriously step up the quality of ingredients and, sad to say, learn the right way to cook them. read more

Service was impeccable at Fat Fish Taco. The staff was attentive worked together to make sure our lunch was brought out piping hot. I got the Baja Bowl. It's a breaded piece of cod with black beans, rice, cabbage, pick de gallo, and the avocado cilantro crema. It was delicious and reminded me of another great NJ coastal Mexican cuisine restaurant, Surf Taco. I would say that I felt the portion of protein was a little undersized and once it was gone, the remainder of food was quite bland and lacked the depth to stand on its own. Really wanted to love this place. Number one these are not tacos. There is a large piece of fish on a tortilla. The fish tastes good quality and I was going to rate it higher but I had a terrible stomach ache after so I reduced a star. The tortilla got very soggy under the fish. The fish itself would be enough to make three tacos if dispensed evenly and then the tortillas wouldn't get soggy and I wouldn't need a fork to eat my tacos. I think the fish would do better on a bed of spinach or something else. For tacos I will go more traditional next time. read more

I've been wanting to try this place out for a few weeks now. Finally got my chance. Walked in. The big windows mean plenty of light. Very spacious, open layout. Decor is modern and clean. Man oh man. I looked at the prices. Shaking my head. At $5 or $6 a pop, I guess I'm getting only 2 tacos. I started to want to hate the place. 20 minutes later, I'm starting to wonder why it takes so long to prepare fish tacos. If anything, fish takes the least amount of time to cook. And anything that can be put into a taco shouldn't take more than 3 minutes to begin with. Soon after I realize 20 minutes have gone by, I was given chips and a thimble of salsa. I have to admit, the chips were legit. Too bad I didn't get enough salsa to determine if the salsa was good. It was so bad, I actually had to use one chip to reach into the thimble and scoop out the bits of salsa onto another chip that I had strategically laid out underneath. One time, I had actually missed and was really sad that I had lost out on the precious salsa. It was very pathetic. As I was crying over the spilled salsa, the tacos were finally brought out. They were nice and big, but at first glance I didn't see much meat. I'm starting to actually get excited at the thought of crossing a place completely off my list. I take a bite into the blackened fish taco. More meat than I had expected. Great flavor, very well balanced. And by well balanced, I mean it was nice and spicy. Time for the spicy shrimp taco. Again. Great flavor, very well balanced, spicy. Ingredients are fresh. No complaints about the actual food. Overall, if you're looking for a great value, this is definitely not the place with $5-6 tacos and nachos for $14-16 if you want meat. If you're looking for a clean atmosphere, fresh food and a good variety of tacos (they also have mahi and buffalo shrimp tempura), then this is the place. Bring a bottle, and you're set. They really do need to speed up service though. 25 minutes is unacceptable for fish tacos. read more

Wasn't impressed. I ordered to go... I'm out in Jersey for business. I got the spicy shrimp taco and blackened fish taco. As a side, I got rice and beans. There were barely any beans on top of a cup of rice. The tacos were mediocre to me. The tacos were $6 a piece. They were wayyyyy too overpriced for the quality. I feel like they overpowered the tacos with slaw & sauces, which made the tacos soggy. I will say that the blackened fish was way better than the shrimp. Overall, it's a no for me. read more

I visited here on a Saturday evening...about a month or so ago. The host was extremely welcoming (I can't remember his name) as well as the server. The chef came out and chatted with me for a while which was cool too. I had the spicy shrimp taco which was a bit too spicy for my taste. However, the shrimp was cooked perfectly. The complimentary chips were good but the salsa verde...not so much for my taste.I also had the pork belly taco the chef suggested (this was one of the specials; not on menu yet) and that was quite tasty! Great flavors all around. Very filling. Update alert!!! Went on date night. Wife's birthday. Surprised her with friends. Could have sat there all night. Bring some red wine.
