(4/5 stars) Mikki's…read moreSoul Food is always one of my first stops whenever I'm in Houston. The ambiance is consistently great--urban, welcoming, and filled with the amazing aroma of soul food the moment you walk through the door. The only real downside is that depending on the day and time, the line can get pretty long. The good news is that it usually moves at a steady pace, so you're not standing around forever. That's a small trade-off for food this good. One thing I appreciate is that they typically have just about everything in stock. If you're an oxtail fan, you might occasionally catch them after they've sold out, but most of the time their menu is fully stocked and ready to go. I also love the buffet-style setup because you can see all the delicious options before making your decision. My personal favorite is the baked turkey wings with a side of cabbage. The turkey wings are always seasoned to perfection, loaded with meat, and served piping hot. The cabbage is flavorful and complements the meal perfectly. Every visit has been consistently good, which is hard to find these days. If you're looking for authentic soul food in Houston, Mikki's is definitely worth a visit. Great food, great atmosphere, and a menu that keeps me coming back. I'll absolutely be back again at my earliest convenience.

I've been coming here for many years and one thing that always stands out is how much they value the customer experience. For Mother's Day, they were giving all the moms complimentary mimosas, which I thought was a really thoughtful gesture. The place was packed, and the line was out the door, but the staff remained friendly, polite, and welcoming despite the crowd and the line moved at a decent pace. Everything looked amazing, and they definitely showed some love on the portions. I ordered the oxtails and beef tips with rice, and that plate felt like it weighed 20lbs! Plenty of food, great flavor, and excellent service is always a win!! It's always worth the drive when you get home and everything tastes ! The desserts are on point too! My cake was nice and moist.

I'm going to give you an honest, no BS opinion here, based upon my reflections and observations. The restaurant occupies a large space, that at one time housed a piano bar; they've kept the performance stage, in the back of the dining space. I'm not sure if they use it or not. They serve cafeteria style, so you can save a bit on tips. I initially thought that the prices were a little stiff, at least for daily dining. At $18 a meal, its not in my affordable daily dining range, which typically tops at about $10. That is, until you see the serving size. My gods, it was enormous! My wife and I had plenty for the two of us, and took home enough for a third meal! Given that, it came down to about $6 a meal, which is a steal! So I want to commend them for great value! The food was displayed behind glass (thank you) on a steam table. Most of it looked really good. We were there around 6:30pm on a Saturday, and the meatloaf looked a bit dried out. The ribs looked kinda sparse--they were obviously what were left. We ordered the delicious-looking smothered pork chops, yams, mashed potatoes, and mac'n cheese. These turned out to be tremendously yummy, and they came with a couple pieces of cornbread, to boot. TIISF thoughtfully places to-go containers and bags in the dining area, making it unnecessary to return to the serving line to get them. A final note: the young man behind the counter serving up the food was very pleasant and personable, and even threw in an extra pork chop (I hope that does not get him into trouble...it truly served to cement a good impression I had of the place.) Food: 5 stars Service: 5 stars Ambiance: 3 stars I recommend all of my Humble, Kingwood, Spring, and Atascocita neighbors give this place a try...you will not be sorry.

They just provided a total cost without any breakdown of how much each item costs or how much would be provided. To trying it out: it seems they don't have their full menu everyday which is fine but might have changed my mind if they had all the items I would have ordered catering to try. I got the fried chicken, green beans, cabbage, and they're apparently award winning mac and cheese. The only thing I would eat again was the chicken which even then seemed unevenly seasoned between pieces. The cabbage was overwhelmingly garlicky whereas the green beans had no flavor. The Mac and cheese was soupy and seemed like I was jipped of the portion. Overall will not be back or catering

The restaurant itself was also very clean and well kept. However, the staff could definitely improve on friendliness. There was no welcome, no smiles, and the cashier looked upset the entire time. At one point an employee came up to her and they were both snapping at each other, which is not the best first impression for new customers. You guys are first point of contact when we come in, please improve this. Also... the tea?! Guys, this was some of the BEST tea ever! So how do you run out of tea?! I do want to give special recognition to the bus lady. She was extremely attentive, constantly on her feet making sure everyone was taken care of. She kept our waters filled, checked on us often, and overall gave amazing customer service. Even when she had to tell us there was no more tea, she was still so kind and helpful. Honestly, she's the reason we would come back. The front line staff... not so much. 3 stars for the server, line cashier but 5 stars go to Ms Lupe!

A small one crawling on the wall near our table and someone from my party saw a larger one crawling near the kitchen. And boy was it stuffy in there. I asked our waitress if she could move a floor fan near for some relief and to detour the gnats, she said she go ask but she never came back and when she did she completely forgot my request. We weren't seated in the greater eating area where it was cooler and maybe where the gnats were less of a bother. The food was delicious and homemade, you can tell it was made with high quality ingredients and that Southern skill that you can only get from helping Grandma in the kitchen. BUT the roaches made us lose our appetite. Such a shame. It seemed like the building went down. They don't seem to put as much effort into the condition of that place as they do the food. Dusty ceiling fans and crummy floors. I appreciate the homey vibe but it looked really junky, more stuff piled in unoccupied corners as before. I gave a lot of things the side eye, I mean it there has to be maintained asthetic. They charged an 18% gratuity on my tab for a party of 8 but I arrived with 4 people, the other 4 had already been there, paid and was almost done with their meal. Then of course the cashier/waitress still mentioned an additional, optional tip. I didn't think that was fair. At the end of it all she wasn't the best waitress.
