Fat Sal's Sandwich, fried cheesesticks & a burger

An UCLA institution. Large calorie laden sandwiches. The signature is the addition of fried cheese sticks and fries in their sandwiches. Love their sandwiches although I can only eat them once in a while now. (My go-to is a Fat Sal sandwich) The dining area is pretty spare and partially outside.

Yummy! Went here after seeing a show at the Geffen. Really good! Yummy fries. We'll definitely come back.

I've eaten at this place before but this is the first time I actually went to the location to eat it. If you are planning on eating this, I suggest you either come with a big appetite, plan on sharing/saving it or need some hang over food. The sandwich is a regular size, but with all the fatty food in the sandwich makes it hard to finish in one seating (for me). I ordered a Fat Bruin because I couldn't make a decision between a sandwich and smashed burgers so might as well get all in one. The only thing that was disappointing about the sandwich is that with all the ingredients in there, I couldn't really taste the individual ingredients as they all started to blend together. Service wise, there is only one window to order from so there is only one line. The wait was about 10-15 minutes we had time to go to the outdoor seating area to grab seats. There's enough room for probably 6 different parties. Parking may be difficult depending on when you come here but we luckily found some across the street.

I haven't been here since my college days and had a craving for Philly cheesesteak. Got that with the seasoned fries with the fat sauce. The sandwich was bomb af but the fries were disappointing. Cold, over seasoned and wilted. Maybe it was a bad batch because in the yelp pics they look great. The guy who took our order was nice too. Will go back to try their fat sandwiches.

Love the burgers and the pastrami !!! Cant get enough of this place. Service is quick and the people are super friendly and chill..i recently started to order online. Which made it even quicker. The area is full of college kids . The atmosphere is busy. Its great for people watching. Have a burger and then walk the area and grab gelato. Enjoy Fat Sals

This place is excellent. Generous portions of great fresh food. Prices are fair & the staff are super cool. Small spot with outside seating & limited parking. It's next door to UCLA so every place is like that. Nice place to stop and have an epic sandwich.

I ordered the double bacon smash burger, and it absolutely delivered. The patties were juicy and flavorful, but the real standout was the bacon--perfectly crispy, thick, and packed with flavor. That level of crispiness is tough to nail, but they pulled it off. Every bite had the perfect mix of savory, melty, and crunchy. The service was very fast for a Friday afternoon around lunch. A very chill patio spot is available to dine in at. Definitely one of the best burger spots I've had in a while. Will be back for sure!

We went out to see Central Cee so of course we ended up falling victim to going to Fat Sal's! It's known to be a spot in LA that's open late that people go to if they're drunk, so here we are Fat Sal OG Sandwich 7.42/10- made with thinly sliced ribeye steak, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, fries, brown gravy, mayo and on a garlic hero. Okay in comparison to the Fat Hot Chick this was like the best sandwich ever! The ribeye was actually pretty tender and the mozzarella sticks added this perfect cheesy element. The onion rings gave it great crunch and the brown gravy tied everything together surprisingly well. The garlic hero was soft and held up to all the fillings without falling apart. But this is also something that I feel like I could only ever eat after a night out lol - it's definitely not a sober meal choice but it hit the spot when we needed it. Fat Hot Chick 4.27/10- made with Nashville hot chicken, mac and cheese bites, jalapeño coleslaw, pickles, flamin' hot Cheetos, and fat sauce on a hero. Maybe seeing the ingredients in this you can understand the gist of this place better! This honestly sounded so good on paper. I'm only giving it a few points for the mac and cheese bites because those were actually fire - crispy outside, creamy inside, perfect drunk food. However, this entire combination of ingredients in a sandwich is possibly the worst thing I could have ever put in my stomach. I am simply never eating another sandwich with hot Cheetos in it again, and jalapeño coleslaw?? This actually hurt my stomach to another degree. The Nashville hot chicken was way too spicy combined with everything else, and the flamin' hot Cheetos just made it this weird crunchy mess. Also we tried this one first and then tried the Fat Sal and the Fat Sal was just so much better in comparison. So yes, it may sound good in theory but it genuinely hurts your stomach. Again - I would only ever go here after a night out when your judgment is questionable and you need something absurdly indulgent. Fat Sal's definitely serves its purpose as late-night drunk food, but don't expect gourmet quality! Sometimes you just need to embrace the chaos ‍ Instagram: @hungrytamale

Fat Sals is next level delicious I had the Fat Texas and it was everything I didn't know I needed. Juicy steak, crispy bacon, melted cheese, perfectly seasoned fries, and BBQ sauce all loaded into a hero roll. Every bite was ridiculously good and totally satisfying. My girlfriend ordered the Honey BBQ Chicken and Fat Fries and both were fire. The chicken was tender with just the right touch of sweet and smoky, and the fries were crispy, golden, and seasoned to perfection. Portions were huge, flavors were bold, and the vibe was fun and fast. Fat Sals isn't just food. It's an experience. Definitely coming back to tackle the rest of the menu.

I love this place! I tried it for the first time the other day with no expectations and now I am obsessed. I tried the banh mi sandwich with a friend and it was perfect to share. The sandwich was so juicy and fresh ingredients. The flavors were out of this world! It is pricy at around $20. I think it's worth it if you share with a friend.

Cute location and great food! The cheeseburger and onion rings / fries was perfect . The soda was massive. Very satisfied

not badd. got the Philly cheesesteak fries. steak was nice and tender, fries were crispy and tasty. wished there was more cheese on top of the fries because alot of the fries were cheese-less. definitely hits hard after a night out though. downsides: expensive for what is given, would probably go to hungry moons instead for loaded fries (cheaper/more food)

If you haven't been to Fat Sal's Deli and you have one nearby... you're seriously missing out. Whenever I return to the Greater LA Area, I always make a point of going to the Westwood location. I was sad to see this particular spot downsized although it still has that same deli-shop/hip vibe that makes it a charming LA staple. While I usually get the Fat Bruin, I recently decided I need to try and get around the menu. It goes without saying that Fat Sal's fat sandwiches never fail to amaze! A couple weeks ago I had the Fat Jerry, which may just take over for my favorite sandwich thus far, surpassing the Bruin and the Texas. I'm already planning my order for the next time I'm in town (Fat Breakfast looks yummy!). I also had the buffalo chicken cheese fries which were amazing as well. Definitely my favorite on the menu now as well! Just wish my girlfriend hadn't hogged all the toppings while I was driving

Fat Sal's Deli Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Fat Sal's Deli

Are you open on holidays?

Hi Carol. We are closed on Thanksgiving & Christmas Day. We also close early on Christmas Eve. Other than that, we are open every day from 11am to 3am.

If I take the sandwich to go what are the chances of it being to soggy to eat? I'll be driving 20 to 25 minutes back to Hawthorne.

Most sandwiches wouldn't get soggy in that amount of time. I've even had one of their sandwiches the following day and still delicious.

Is anything here gluten free?

Fat Sal's does have some gluten free salads and sides, but sadly there is no mention on their menus of any gluten free substitutions for their breads. Additional a large amount of their sandwiches have breaded toppings (e.g., mozzarella sticks).

How is seating?

Outdoor seating. Very few tables and chairs

Is the one in Encino still going to be built?

Yes. I was told it has been construction issues and permit problems that caused the delays? I can't wait either :-)

Parking: Street parking was super easy on a Sunday afternoon, I was able to pull up right in front and park on the street. There is a Super A across the street and ample parking around for free. Ambiance & Food: This reminds me of an old school burger stand. Those were the best burgers and this one did not stop that trend. As I walked up, we were warmly greeted and given a quick rundown of what which burger. They did have specials (I will get to that in a second) which we were intrigued, but for the sake of perspective, I ordered the Goldburger and both regular fries and curly fries with a bottle coke. The Goldburger is naturally a double, but my gymrat protein brain added that extra patty. They use a 70% to 30% mixture for their burger which makes the burger oh so decadent. The picture I took doesn't do it justice. The moment you bite into the burger the combination of burger juice, aioli, burnt skirt, all come together in such a harmonious fashion. It was remarkable. Though fries are not one of my strong points, both fries were crispy and I haven't had any other experience with Curly fries other than Jack in the Box, but these were so much better. I went ahead and dipped the fries in some homemade Aioli and dang, what a combo! Back to those specials, the current special is CHILI, I was intrigued so they gave me a small container of it to try. Man, if I wasn't watching my caloric intake, that would have been the move. It was rich and chunky and not to soggy which some always comes. Give it a try as they said it will be around for sometime. Other than burgers, they do have hot dogs as well. So worth trying both next time. To be perfectly honest, this brought back so much nostalgia for me, I used to go to school in the area and this brought a lot of those memories back. Tasty burgers and a must try for sure if your around! Cheers!

Howlin' Ray's is there too... but I don't care. ‍ Yes, they have smash burgers here, but I don't really think of Amboy as a smash burger place. It's the thicker burgers that keep bringing me back. Also, don't plan your entire trip around getting The DH because they don't always have it. This was my second visit and once again it wasn't available, so we ended up getting the Amboy and the Fancy, both Slim Thicc style. The seating situation is the only real downside. On weekends people end up eating all over the plaza--around the trees, on benches, basically wherever they can find a place to sit. Weekdays are definitely the move if you can make it. One thing to know before you get in line: people take their sweet time ordering here, and honestly I get it because everything sounds good. Just bring a little patience. The only thing I wish they'd asked was how I wanted my burger cooked. They asked what thickness I wanted but not the temperature. I'm always happy when a burger place asks if I want medium rare, medium, whatever. Next time I'll probably just tell them I want it medium rare. The burgers though? Fantastic. Especially if you're like me and getting a little burned out on every new place opening another expensive smash burger spot. One warning though... Don't plan anything after eating here. Irv's originally opened in 1946 as Queen's Burgers, located right on Route 66 on Santa Monica Boulevard in WeHo, and was deeply ingrained in LA's historic car culture. In 1970, Irv Genis bought the stand and renamed it Irv's Burgers, and it quickly became a legendary late-night spot for rock icons like Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison. By 2000, Sonia Hong took over, famously hand-drawing doodles on the paper plates alongside her signature slogan, "Just for you." After closing in 2013 and again in 2018, Lawrence Longo partnered with Sonia in 2021 to bring the brand back to life. They've since expanded quite a bit, even opening locations in Malibu and Las Vegas. On a staff recommendation, I ordered Irv's Original Roadside Burger Double ($11.25). Honestly, it was just okay. While a certain amount of grease and salt is expected with a burger, this one crossed the line into being a bit too salty and oily. On the bright side, the sesame bun was excellent, and I loved that they kept Sonia's legacy alive by printing her classic doodles on the tray placemats. While I'm glad Irv's was saved from history and is expanding, the food itself felt pretty so-so. The outdoor tables were also a bit dirty during my visit. I still love that classic roadside burger stand aesthetic with the outdoor stools, but unfortunately, I won't be in a rush to head back.
