We went on the 4th and they were going to close in less than an hour so we got the food to go. I came specifically for the chicharron and guacamole cup. Once we walked in, we were warmly greeted. All the employees who passed by me or who made eye contact with gave a welcoming smile. It was a typical joint with a sit down area and an older gentleman in the corner singing and playing his guitar. My husband really wanted to stay and eat but i didn't want to rush. We had a 30 minute drive home. It made no difference since the flavor was there, the food was fresh, and we had no complaints. We will be coming back to sit down and eat. read more

All the food was excellent! The carnitas were flavorful, tender and generous serving size. The ranchero plate along with the barbacoa, potato and the beans were excellent as well. The chicharron was also delicious. The 25 minute drive to this establishment was well worth it and will return soon. The service provided from all staff was excellent with a great welcome as you enter the restaurant. The waitress was very friendly and provided excellent service providing timely refills and asking if everything on the plate looked correct as she delivered food. La Unica Tamales and Barbacoa is truly a hidden gem! We tried the chicharrón in guac cup, la machete plate, and the huevos rancheros plate -- and everything was phenomenal. You can taste the freshness in every bite, and the handmade tortillas really take it to another level. Each plate was beautifully presented, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. The barbacoa here is easily one of my favorites -- tender, flavorful, and just melts in your mouth. The price point was about $12 (+tax), which at first I didn't think it was worth, but after discovering much more meat than I expected, it was a fair price. Bought menudo there last weekend and was so impressed i invited my parents. Mom makes the best menudo! Walking in I immediately felt we were bothering the staff. The waitress came almost 15 minutes after we we seated to just get our drink order and when our food was brought to us all the plates were lukewarm warm like they'd been served and sitting for awhile. I had to ask twice for our tortillas which finally came when we were halfway done with our tepid menudo. Not impressed this time. The menudo was very good but doesn't make up for the guy yelling at customers from behind the counter to wait to be seated. Yes truly that did happen while we waited for our food. The wait staff are zooming around busily and although they are friendly, the place is understaffed so we only saw our waitress when she took our order, didn't check on us to refill drinks etc. I brought my mom specifically for the chicharrón because we had seen it on social media and wanted the meaty whole wands of chicharrón and we were disappointed because they served us a cup full of crumbs with the excuse that they had run out. The machete was delicious and worth the trip but can't believe they served such a poor quality product. When I tell you I DEVOURED them tacos. My daughter had the enchilladas...she finished the whole plate off. My hubby had the torta but he had already dug in by the time I could try to get a pic. He loved it! The service was excellent. We got a waitress that didn't speak English which didn't work well for our little Spanish. So she went to get a young man to help get our order...He even sold us on the Horchata which was also very good. We almost did not come here solely because of the mixed reviews but so glad we did!! Party of 4 so we orders and shared 2 chicharron w/ guac cups, birria machete and chilaquiles. Birria was most excellent!! Consumme, cilantro and lemon added was bussin'. There were different options for chilaquiles and I honestly don't remember what ours was called but it was a red sauce, flavorful beans, potatoes and two eggs on top. Delish! Then our cups came later and were worth the wait. People were kind. Spanish is their first language so be patient. It's not fast food so don't expect things to come quickly out of the kitchen. Good food. Real good food. The place is very.... local. Everyone was friendly & accommidating. I would suggest looking over the menu before you go if you don't speak much Spanish. Even with our very poor attempts at the language, they were very kind & patient as we struggled through with what we could. They appreciated the effort. We were there for breakfast & wanted to try a variety, so we got the tacos vapor mix & the tacos mañaneros mix. The tacos vapor are corn tortillas & steamed, the mañaneros are flour tortillas h just warmed in foil. We were both given barbacoa, papas con chorizo (potato w/spiced sausage), pollo (chicken), frijoles con chorizo (beans & sausage), & adobada (spicy pork). The spicy fillings were flavorful, but would only be considered too spicy for the most delicate of palettes. Favorite for the flour was the barbacoa- so so good. No wonder they sell it by the pound! Will be returning for that alone. But the pollo was also very tasty, especially with the green salsa. For the vapor tacos, the adobada was a real winner. It was very similar to eating a good pork tamal, which they do sell by the dozen, as well. Salsas were both good & complimented the dishes well. The chicken was ok with slices of cheese melted on top. The cheese was cold and looked solidified. Service was just ehh.. we were not given menus until I asked and it was already 7 minutes after we sat down. We were never asked if we needed any refills or if everything was okay. Just a heads up if you go to La Unica restaurant. We were a group of 15 people, 9 adults and 6 kids from 3 families. We went to la Unica for brunch, their meals are about $10.00 each, just the adults ordered meals and a drink to go with it, the kids only had breakfast tacos and split drinks. It looks like we had 2 waitresses, as we asked for the check, we found out that there's no splitting bills. One of the waitresses mentioned that our bill was $250.00 dlls. We asked for the full check to see the breakdown of the food and she changed the amount. It actually was $210.00 dlls. I also noticed a charge for $5.99 for using a credit card. I didn't see any signs for it. At the end we got charged the $210.00 but we also got charged $46.00 for tips and $5.99 for credit card use. We paid everything and left. We felt scammed and decided not to go back. One family was visiting from mesquite, the second one came from Kyle and we are from converse. The food was decent, the service was bad. I've came here twice already in the past 2 weeks. The waitress we got was super nice and attentive. She made sure we had everything we needed. The first time I got chilaquiles and they were delicious. The second time I got gorditas, one of chicharrón prensado and another one of deshebrada. They were excellent. To start off I'm from San Antonio, living north to Dallas, La Unica has always been my go-to for tamales anytime we make it into town we get a few dozen to bring home which is not very often. We've always been extremely happy until this time. This last weekend my wife was in town and picked up two dozen pork tamales. When we got them home one dozen was perfect. The other doesn't are 95% masa and 5% meat, every one in the dozen are this way. Very disappointed in the product and the quality control apparently. Unfortunately since we are 5 and 1/2 hours north of there location we can't just take them back and get another dozen. Got to say for the first time I'm glad she only bought two dozen and not 5 or 6. read more
