The food quality has hit rock bottom over the years. This was one of my favorite places to eat when I was a child. 20 years later, the food is just terrible. They're known for their Garlic Chicken. Which is fantastic if you can get it fresh. Keyword "if." They make a huge batch in the morning and let it sit in a warm case all day. By time you get it, it's usually dried out and chewy. Don't bother asking them to make a fresh batch, because it annoys the heck out of them: they don't have the nicest workers. Last time I ordered Katsu Curry, the curry was so watery. It was gross. They can't even get the rice right! The rice with my curry was so hard it's like they just scooped it straight from the bag to my plate. It was disgusting. It's a real shame this place is now just a shell of its former self. Avoid this place. read more

Normally this place is really good. Today's food was horrible. I order the garlic chicken and all I got was breading. My husband order pan fried pork chop and it was nothing like it. Small little restaurant in the corner of a plaza, Fat Boy's serve quick/fast/delicious local plates and bentos. They're known for their Garlic Chicken, but the bf and I didnt get that. He got the bento and i got the ahi tuna salad (hey i was craving some greens okay!). Overall, it's a quick service kinda place, no seating except a few tables outside. The server was nice, very fast and efficient at what she does, and the place was quite busy. Most items are around $7-12 good portions and very filling. Although my ahi was a bit overcooked, it was a giant salad and was very happy with my choice. Good variety of greens and very delicious dressing. The BF's bento came with garlic chicken, katsu chicken..and one other item over a bed of rice. Very filling and yummy per his statement. The previous reviewer was right when they said it's like Hawaiian fast food. It was good enough for us after swimming at the beach and working up an appetite. The guy at the counter was nice, food was warm and crispy and the price is good for what you get. Seating is outdoor on a small patio, but we didn't have a problem getting a table. The only thing I wasn't too thrilled about was the birds. You can't shoo them away and at one point one aggressively attacked my food box haha. All the locals rave about Fat Boy's and their Garlic Chicken Plate, so my friend and I finally came here on our last day in Hawaii. I'll admit that it was much tastier than expected! The service here was super lame (poor girl must have been bored out of her freaking mind at 10am) but we were excited to try this shoyu and garlic glazed piece of work. The plate itself looks rather unappetizing but the chicken does pair well with the rice, and the helpings are generous. I would recommend the macaroni salad as a side, though I've had better. I'm glad I got to try something with more local flavor, but honestly I would not recommend Fat Boy's to other tourists looking to conserve one of their precious meals. Family went hiking in the area and we spent the day at the beach. After a long day out in the hood, bro-in-law suggested get Fatboy's and boy were we pleasantly surprised. After checking a couple of Yelp reviews and by the simple not that the Garlic chicken was their most popular item, we decided to go for it. Wow oh wow, it was quite good. It has a semi-sweet taste to it...I would say it's a cross somewhere between the island fried chicken from the Loft, if you're familiar with that place, and a tad bit like orange chicken...but better in both regards. Comes with rice and Mac salad, for under $10, and my sis-in-law ordered a mini for $6.99, which is a decent sized portion if you're not too hungry. The chicken curry wasn't too bad either. So that's another option. Counter service....you can pick stuff from behind the glass too if you want so it's not super speedy but def worth the wait. Parking is available right in front but it can be kinda tight...so watch your doors. The spot is super small, you can't even eat inside, but there's a few tables out side with shades so you can eat out there. But there's no restroom either...which was kind of an issue for me, cuz I needed to go. But there's a Starbucks across the street so, problem solved read more

We decided to support local today by stopping by for takeout. In our efforts to keep social distance we attempted to read the menu from the outside but the front windows were dirty and it was too hard to see in. When we were ready to order, several items from the menu were unavailable. Its understandable during this time, but there were no signs indicating limited menu items. We settled on ordering a three egg omelette which states comes with 1 choice of meat, green onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes. They were out of our first choice of ham so we settled for spam. It was literally spam and egg. This is sad how people plead for support, but in turn they do not offer the best they can put out there. Do better! read more

#firsttimer Ordered the Fatboy Bento Box - which included Garlic chicken, teriyaki beef, fried fish, hot dog, spam for only $7.99. Garlic chicken = BEST ONE EVER. Meat was tender and flavor was on point. I think this is the best meat out of the whole bento. #myfavorite Teriyaki beef was my second favorite. Sweet and flavorful too. Hot dog looked like filipino hotdog, but didn't taste like it. (a little disappointing) Spam = who doesn't love spam. Fried Fish was good too but not memorable. It had the perfect crunch to it. Overall: Affordable, especially for all the selections you get. GARLIC. CHICKEN. ON. POINT. Get best of all worlds with all the selections. Went in to get take out for lunch with my husband. Ordered my food, wait was not that long. Clean place but inside very small. Ordered garlic tater tots which was about $4.30 or something very small portion. Wasn't expecting it to be that little. It was Parmesan cheese and garlic salt sprinkled. Very Oily. I also ordered mini chicken katsu portion was very mini. Macaroni salad was very watery. Didn't like it. Husband ordered loco moco and said it wasn't that good. Macaroni salad not good. I haven't been here in quite awhile but had the usual garlic chicken bento. I noticed right away that it wasn't the same by appearance especially being a customer from way back when they were in Kalihi. The pieces were tiny and there was this crumbly brown sauce over everything especially the rice. The garlic taste was very weak and the chicken was tough and not very juicy. I am completely disappointed that this once favorite place for garlic chicken will be scratched from my list of places to eat in Kailua. read more

Ono food but portions can be a little better for the price your paying. Got the MY Mix Plate, got couple pieces of Garlic Chicken and Kalua Pig. 2 scoops rice and Mac salad. Kalua pig had no more cabbage. Garlic chicken can be more hot because it was pre cooked and in one banquet plate ready to go. Paid $12.99 for one plate and a half plate can go from $8.99 and above. First time trying Fatboys so can't say much about it expect high prices with little portions. I'm gonna try the one in Waipio and we'll see. The menu you see online at their website is not updated so add like couple dollars when ordering so you don't get confused. Also, order in advance because there's only one person at the register and one person at kitchen so know what you gonna order or it'll be a long wait for you. Small, quaint place next door to Formaggios. Seating is outside. Small interior, just enough for the cook and ordering. My son had the bento and I had the corn beef hash breakfast, Both were served hot and fresh and tasty. Prices are way more than reasonable, quite a nice variety of food. If you're going to Target, this is a place to consider as they serve much more local food than pizza etc at Target. Service could use a bit more smiles and welcoming but all in all, you're going to sit outside, so ambiance is not a necessity? or is it? Been eating at Fat Boys since it opened in Kailua. Always known for good food & nice portion sizes. Ate there today & was very Disappointed! Ordered a Kamehameha Breakfast plate & got what looked more like a Captain Cook Plate. Portion size was ridiculously small. More of the plate was exposed where food should have been sitting. Atleast cover that empty space up with rice! Ordered a Chinese Chicken Salad & realized as I ate, there was more dressing then salad. My mixed plate was under portion as well. Garlic chicken doesn't taste like the orginal chicken that was first fried & cooked from FatBoys. Not sure if Fat Boys is under new management or ownwers but something changed & not for the better. Not the best beef stew, not the worst, but extra points for being the only place open in Kailua on "Tsunami Of Destruction Day." Plus one for the overweight, tattooed, haole lady and her "baby" jumbo rat talking story with everything. $8 for a beef stew plate. This is not the gross inedible beef stew found at Elmer Fudd's Bachelor Pad, but it was not enjoyable. Very hard chunks of meat with big munks of fat, hard carrots, ok potatoes (how do you muss a potato, srsly?) and some celery. All the proper ingredients and an orange sauce. Maybe it just hadn't been simmering long enough? The dog inhaled it. Rice was too mushy, but that's to be expected. Toss Salad was shredded iceberg and tangy french. Again, just ok. Chicken Katsu was hot and made to order, but overcooked and the katsu sauce had too much brown in it (what is that? steak sauce? worchestershire?) Funny because I walked in and there was the bored lady on register AND the two chef dudes in the back all blinking at me expectantly, waiting for an order to come out of my mouth, their hands hovering over their tools. Creepy or attentive? You decide. I will not come back unless this place is the only place open (again). Go to Formaggio or the Thai place or CPK or try something new! read more

This place seems to be a very popular restaraunt within Kailua town. I came here Passing through town. It's a small restaraunt more of a take out counter really but there are outdoor seating with umbrellas at least 8 tables ( a real cool place to eat and relax in the shade). The place seems clean and the counter girl was very friendly and accommodating :) They have a very extensive range of food anywhere from butter milk pancakes to bento lunches to fish and chips. They are known for their garlic chicken. I got the fish and chips and the fish was very good..flaky..crispy and perfectly seasoned the fries was ok anyways Once you order your food the sides are served from a small like window viewing okazu counter and I guess the food is made to order in back. I was surprised on how a quickly and efficiently the orders was put in and filled. This location seemed ideal for a place to get your grinds before hitting lanikai or just chilln under their cool patio like seating. Definetely a go to place while in Kailua. read more

HB and I wanted to try some local fare from Kailua and ended up at Fat Boy's. He got the garlic chicken and Maui ribs. I got the local roast pork and some fried mahi-mahi. Both came with heapings of carbs, which is a great deal if you're looking to feed at least 4 people between 2 orders. Then I got food poisoning because I'm an idiot. I noticed the roast pork and the sauce it was wallowing in tasted funky but I kept going anyway thinking it was a local Hawaiian flavour that I'm just not used to. After the horrific symptoms of food poisoning surfaced the next day (which are highly inappropriate for a Yelp review), I then realized if Darwin was right, I would have been the girl who tasted a bitter berry and not clued in that it's poisonous. *boink* We went in close to 8:30PM so maybe we got old food, but still no excuse to be serving old food. Everything was so-so. Maui ribs were decent but if I'm back for a Hawaiian barbeque, I think I'll stick to a proper luau. read more

On one hand: -Garlic chicken is always good -Prices & portions are really good -I almost always grab lunch here when I'm in Kailua On the other hand: -I always feel like I'm intruding when I walk in for some reason -Workers never seem cheery -Other food can be inconsistent At this Fatboy's location, I always order the garlic chicken. I strayed away once at another location, and it was a mistake, so I figure I stick to what they're known for. It seems like between this visit and my last, they changed the garlic chicken a bit? Still good, though. If you get the regular size plate, it's 8.99, and you get a ton of the garlic chicken. It comes with two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac or tossed salad. Definitely winners. Great price for great portions. However, I don't think I've ever gotten a single smile from the workers there. Sometimes they just seem grumpy, or unhappy to be there. On my most recent visit, the woman working the front was talking to someone else on her bluetooth, and was taking my order by mouthing "mac or toss" and my total to me, because someone on the phone was more important than the customer?? Idk. Unprofessional, if you ask me... Whatevaz. Sometimes the rice is hard, and that is a super pet peeve for me. I am one for wet rice, and I absolutely cannot stand when I pay for rice from an establishment and it is dry or overcooked. Big no-no. I'm always looking forward to stopping by Fatboy's for lunch, but always find myself hoping that the food isn't of poor quality. Am I weird? The thing that wasn't that great was the service and the seating. Only one person was working up front and she was taking orders, serving, and ringing people up. Good on her but she needed some help. Ok, who told everyone about FatBoy's onion rings?!?! I am in love and suddenly every time I go, they are all gone!! Apparently I am not the only one with fat kid fantasies about the amazing onion rings, crispy batter, and seasalt!!!! I always get the garlic chicken plate. Now, I've never had this Mitsuken chicken everyone talks about, but I can't imagine anything better than Fatboy's! So much garlic my breath...and my car...reek for the next week. Yum! The mac salad is great, too! I am usually not the biggest fan of the plate lunch mac salad, but again, whatever crack Fatboy's puts in theirs...I'm hooked! Their rice is nothing mind-blowing, but it's pretty hard to make stand out plain white rice. I read the review about the employees not being all that polite and I have to agree. They weren't mean, but they made it seem they could care less and that they didn't want to be there. The food was alright. I ordered the loco moco. The patty was really dry from either cooked too long or all the juices were squeezed out. It was bad, but I've had better. My friend got the garlic chicken. That was pretty good. I wish I had gotten that instead, but I have also had better. Overall, I would probably go again if it came to it, but I won't go out of my way to eat there. read more
