This is the best place, and I'm so glad they opened one on W4th st. I got a cake for my coworker since he was leaving our company, it was like a strawberry shortcake but with other fruit, not just strawberries and everyone absolutely loved it. Since I was already there I got a raisin twist with an iced coffee for breakfast and it was simply delicious! I particularly like this location better than the ones in chinatown because they speak English, and even though I know this is a chinese establishment, it's still nice to go into a store in my own town and be able to order in English. Once satisfied with your selection, slide on down to the counter for an order of bubble tea. It's fresh and loaded with a generous pearly bottom and milky swirl of quenching black tea. Don't expect to plop your bottom down to savor these treasures. This location is purely for express service. Get in, get out. Venture into Washington Square Park if your hands are too full for a brisk face-mashing goodie-consuming walk. While the buns cost under $2, the large bubbles cost $4+. LOVED this place for years. It's kooky, cheap, clean, cutsey and most of all delicious. The loaction is solid, right off of the W4th stop. It is all self serve and CASH ONLY and expect broken English. Basically, don't speak unless spoken to and keep it simple. I asked for a box once, never got the box but got all 20 patries triple wrapped and bagged military style....I just rolled with it. It's part of the fun. It's a bit cramped as you scoot by each other tying to get into the bins with tongs in hand but who cares. Everything is pretty much $1-2. The roasted pork buns (think boneless pork pieces and a delicious BBQ sauce with a sweet bun that reminds me of Hawaiian bread) and egg custard tarts...these are a must, everything else...it you even think you'll like it, it will be delicious, just put it on the tray, its a buck! Just keep in mind that it's fresh with no preservatives. It's meant to be eaten immediately. Seating is non-existent...it's a grab and go type place. Not to be missed. read more

This CASH ONLY bakery helps satisfy my cravings for the roast pork buns and various baked goods of similar bakeries in San Francisco. And this is the best mini-chain of bakeries in the city. You can't beat the prices here. Most buns cost around $1.10. Be sure to get a steamed or baked roast pork bun. You'll never lose the craving. Since there's no seating here, you'll have to have somewhere to go after you get your goods. Chances are you'll finish eating whatever you got while you walk. The service is fast and congenial and you can't beat the prices (especially for the over-priced, tourist-heavy west village). I just wish they were open later! read more

Located right next to the IFC Center, this place is perfect for grabbing a snack or light meal before or after seeing a show (Or sneaking something in, if that's your style. I'm not judging). There's no real seating, it's pretty much a grab and go counter. Nice selection of savory and sweet items. They have all the standard Chinese pastries (egg custard tarts, pork buns, sesame red bean balls, custard buns, etc), plus some pretty cakes and cookies. Fay Da Bakery is a nice treat right as you step off the West 4th street subway stop. My friend and I were looking for bubble tea and Fay Da delivered! The watermelon bubble tea smoothie is one of my favorites. I also tried a taro mochi dessert. It was delicious! The taro filling was just the right amount of sweet and the mochi was fresh. The only Asian bakery in West Village. It has a pretty large selection of breads, pastries and cakes/rolls that you'd expect to see at super cheap prices. It's also located literally right outside the ACE West 4th subway station so it's really easy to grab a snack if you're on the go. It's pretty hard to find any Asian bakeries outside of Chinatown so this place is definitely going to be top of mind for me if I'm ever craving cake rolls while in West Village! read more

At $1.10 for a bun, Fay Da here is slightly more than other Chinese bakeries in Chinatown but great bang for the buck for the area. Breads here are always fresh, with many varieties, from sweet to savory and with fillings like red bean, taro etc. I tried a cake slice here...okay, nothing to rave about. Stick to the breads. The staff is cheery and efficient, and indulge me as I always take a cellaphane bag to bag my breads BEFORE I go to the counter to pay for it. A smart addition to the nabe that just may have broken the curse of every place that has opened in this location since the old neighboorhood coffeeshop closed. read more

This location is really a mixed bag for me. The service is really not so awesome, but when it comes to their selection and freshness, let alone the product -- it's five stars all the way. Came in with a girlfriend for a quick bite and she knocked over her tea. We apologized profusely but still got nasty looks from the staff. You know Fay Da Bakery - they're in Manhattan's Chinatown and Flushing and aren't frightening to non-Chinese customers what with items labelled in English and clean bright white stores. I'm giving their new Greenwich Village location an extra star because sometimes I can't be bothered going to Chinatown. What they have: lots of buns (cream coconut, dried pork, red bean, sausage etc plus steamed buns), sliced bread loaves, cheesecakes, mousses, sponge-cakes, tarts, cookies, jelly fruit and bubble teas, Horlicks, Ovaltine, coffee. At first it can seem like a quirky mixture of Chinese, American and British, but it turns out most Chinese-American bakeries have settled on the same goods. Foodies don't visit Fay Da for obscure and regional Chinese treats. The prices look amazingly cheap if you don't realize how airy Chinese baked products are. You can squish an entire slice of cake in your mouth in one bite. Don't try this at Rocco's, around the corner. I prefer denser Italian cheesecakes and heavier European cakes but when you accept that Fay Da's goods are a different beast you'll appreciate them more. Compared to the Chinatown locations, prices at this store seem 20c or so higher on cheap items (i.e. about 20%). I haven't been to a Fay Da Bakery in the past few months so may be wrong. read more

Here...it was a $1. OK NYC...i get it, but a $1!? Whatever, I'm hungry. I grabbed a pineapple bun and a bbq pork bun. CASH ONLY. $2.25 (as of March 2014) Okay...i had baos and stuff before i even knew cereal existed...and i love cereal! So i think i know my stuff here a bit. Pineapple bun (no theres no pineapples) - normally they are presented in a circular shape, sometimes not but often they are. This one was long and rectangular ish..a bit weird but I dont judge superficially. BUT after the first bite..done deal, FAILED!. Pineapple buns are supposed to be fluffy and light, hence the round shape. This was just dense and flat, like it was deflated and maybe a day old. Plus i find the topping a bit too sweet, in an artificial way. Maybe that was just me. BBQ pork bun - oh this is it! I USED TO LOVEEEEEE BBQ PORK BUN, not as much now but i enjoy it here and there. When you bite into a BBQ pork bun, it's gooey and you get the diced pieces of meat. I don't know WHAT this was...it was like...pulled meat? I don't even want to know. My favorite are the pork and vegetable steamed buns. They are so flavorful and savory! There is limited seating here. There was a time in my life, not too long ago, when I was spending a lot of time in the worst place in the world... New Jersey. As soon as I'd reach West 4th I would find myself breathing a sigh of relief and shouting victoriously, "I have made it back to civilization!" However, still famished, I needed to replenish myself. What better way then with cheap Chinese baked goods? Fay Da is conveniently located right near the West 4th subway stop - so I conveniently find myself in it more than I care to admit. Pork buns keep me busy on my long journey back to the greatest borough (Brooklyn) and I always try something new. It's cheap, it's filling, and it is exceptionally clean. Everything is properly labeled and frequently rotated so you never have to worry about accidentally opting for a tofu stuffed bun when you really need you some chicken. Definitely a go-to spot if you're in the area and not in the mood to trek it to Chinatown. read more

Now this is a pleasant surprise for a Chinese bakery to appear in the West Village and conveniently right next to the train station. Being a Chinese baked goods fanatic, I knew I had to hop in here the day I was dying of heat. I thought I was going to have a heat stroke. It was 93 degrees that day mind you. ^^;; I remember clearly that I ordered a cold milk tea. Price was a little bit more pricey than the Fay Da's in Chinatown but I guess that's what happens when you try to get Chinese food outside of Chinaville---I mean Chinatown. I would give this place an extra star except the price is a bit higher and the place is a bit small given the location it is in but what really brought it down one full star was that I suffered a tummy ache from drinking the iced milk tea. 2 strawberry tarts at 2.95 a piece is a good deal. They are tasty and the strawberries very sweet (ie covered in sugar and goodness just the way I like them). It's a clean bakery that's just average. The location is great since it is literally right in front of the W 4th St. station, and I love that I can now get my favorite Chinese bakery pastries outside of Flushing and/or Canal Street. I love the sliced raisin bread toast ($3.25) and the coconut bun ($1.10) but the best treat is the huge family-size Napoleon ($11 for a whole), which is just a heart attack and happiness in one delish treat. For those of you who have more of a savory palette, try the curry pastries. While it's not as fantastic as the Flushing location, it has all of the standard items and the convenience is great.
