Really liked our experience here. In typical Chinatown fashion, they are all business. Also keep in mind this is a cash only business! We tried a variety of pastries since I didn't want to have any spare change. The red bean sesame ball was perfectly covered in sesame and fried with a slightly sweeter than I'd like filling, but still delicious. The plain hotdog pastry was a good mix of a slightly sweet and soft bun with a salty hotdog in the middle (almost like a meat kolache). We had mixed feelings about the pork floss bun- the pork floss is great, but there's some spread in the middle of the bun. A really oily mayonnaise? That's slightly sweet, slightly salty, and very fatty that we didn't rave. I finally scored cookie-crust egg tarts at Tai Pan Bakery. They really do have every kind of egg tart, from cookie crust to puff pastry, portuguese egg tarts to milk tarts. For anyone who isn't familiar with the difference between cookie crust (曲奇皮) and puff pastry crust (酥皮) egg tarts: the cookie crust has a buttery, shortbread-like flavor with a crumbly bite, while the puff pastry version is much flakier and puffier. From what I've seen, egg tarts with a puff pastry crust are more common in NYC. ＊Mini Egg Tart 蛋撻仔 $0.9/pc, $10/box ＊Oval Egg Tart 蛋撻 $2.5 I ended up preferring the mini version because the cookie-crust-to-custard ratio was just right, and it was fun to finish one in a single bite. Despite being so small, the custard still kept a silky, jiggly texture. However, the regular-size oval tart was a little disappointing. Whew! thank goodness we found another bakery to take care of our Sesame Ball (and other goodies) fix, considering our usual go-to bakery shut down. We happened to come across this bakery on the way to the subway. They carry all the usual bakery goods ranging from custards/tarts, buns/breads, cakes. Beverages include coffee, tea, soda, juice, all priced low ...except for the bottled water! There truly are so many items to choose from. The prices are great as well, roughly $2-5/item, cash only. We really only came here for the sesame balls. They were fresh, warm and so delicious...we came back the next day. There is seating available in the back, as well as an additional door. Customer service is non-existent. Ordering is a little confusing...is it at the window or the counter behind the food? They have a big selection on stuffed buns, little cakes, puddings & large cakes as well as refreshments, teas & fruit shakes. Get a tray & tongs & pick your buns. The setup inside was a little confusing and it took me a while to figure out where to go for checking out. I got a hot dog and scallion bun and it was very yummy! We were looking for a place that served fried pork dumplings. They had some good looking ones and they did not disappoint! We had one there and saved one for later during our wait at the airport. Crazy how it was still so fluffy and chewy hours later! We also got a sesame ball which had a similar texture, filled with red bean, and a sesame bun in our fridge that we still haven't tried yet. Today we came midday and we were surprised that many of the baked goods came out nice and warm so we grabbed several of these. I haven't been to Taipan in a very very long time so this is a long overdue review. I notice the prices have skyrocketed. Almost $10 for a loaf of bread and $3 for a egg tart? Seems very expensive. The review is only for the croissant and the pineapple bun. The croissant I guess was reasonably priced but was too doughy for my tastes. On a scale of 1-10, I will give it a 3. It was very below average. The pineapple bun was not as soft as I would like and the flavor was subpar. I know Taipan is a landmark bakery but it wasn't my favorite bakery years ago and is not my favorite to this day for obvious reasons. I came here because the other bakery I normally go to was out of breads that I wanted. The store was dimly lit, crowded, and the breads were not all labeled correctly. There was a small selection of breads, and then they also had a case of pastries and other items. I got the pineapple bun, pineapple bun with some sort of bean paste inside, and the roast pork bun. Their egg charts are very crispy and buttery and great flavor, just kind of small, especially compared to Lily bloom/xin fa bakery in Brooklyn Chinatown (which I think are the best) The mango lava is decent Moose, not such a strong mango flavor. The green tea Matcha has a very good soft sponge with solid Matcha taste. We got an 8 inch cake for lunar new year which is displayed. Very reasonable price for $42. Lots of tourists too which means this place is very hyped for their nice and to go pastries at an affordable price. With around $2 you can get yourself a nice pastry like the pineapple bread in case you're hungry and need a fast snack which is what I've been doing lately. So hungry and I need to run into Taipan to get a fast light snack. The good thing about their pastries is that they are not laden with sugar and cream to the point that you're just eating pure sugar. They are very careful about the sweetness level so you definitely know it is Chinese pastry you're tasting! Most American bakeries are very sugary so anyone who wants to try out Chinese pastries without too much sugar should come here. It's in the heart of Chinatown! Their cakes are very cute too!
