Soft Rice Ball topped with coconut shreds & mango cream filling

This Chinese Bakery on Canal between Mulberry & Mott Streets is my go to when I'm in Chinatown. They have a big selection on stuffed buns, little cakes, puddings & large cakes as well as refreshments, teas & fruit shakes. Get a tray & tongs & pick your buns. The cakes @ puddings are delicious & not too sweet. There's also over the counter desserts & the service is very fast. The place is always busy. It's bright, orderly & clean inside with plenty of seating. So if you're walking through or shopping in Chinatown, do go in & have some delicious desserts from their vast selection of goodies.

I finally scored cookie-crust egg tarts at Tai Pan Bakery. They really do have every kind of egg tart, from cookie crust to puff pastry, portuguese egg tarts to milk tarts. For anyone who isn't familiar with the difference between cookie crust (曲奇皮) and puff pastry crust (酥皮) egg tarts: the cookie crust has a buttery, shortbread-like flavor with a crumbly bite, while the puff pastry version is much flakier and puffier. From what I've seen, egg tarts with a puff pastry crust are more common in NYC. *Mini Egg Tart 蛋撻仔 $0.9/pc, $10/box *Oval Egg Tart 蛋撻 $2.5 I ended up preferring the mini version because the cookie-crust-to-custard ratio was just right, and it was fun to finish one in a single bite. Despite being so small, the custard still kept a silky, jiggly texture. However, the regular-size oval tart was a little disappointing. The tart shell was too shallow, so the egg custard lacked that soft, jiggly texture. The crust itself was still buttery and crumbly, but the filling didn't quite hit the mark.

Whew! thank goodness we found another bakery to take care of our Sesame Ball (and other goodies) fix, considering our usual go-to bakery shut down. We happened to come across this bakery on the way to the subway. They carry all the usual bakery goods ranging from custards/tarts, buns/breads, cakes. Beverages include coffee, tea, soda, juice, all priced low ...except for the bottled water! There truly are so many items to choose from. The prices are great as well, roughly $2-5/item, cash only. We really only came here for the sesame balls. They were fresh, warm and so delicious...we came back the next day. There is seating available in the back, as well as an additional door. Customer service is non-existent. Ordering is a little confusing...is it at the window or the counter behind the food? We tried both, but learned in the end that people will just get in front if you're not "aggressive" with placing the order. Would I return? yea, absolutely! I need to try other items on my next visit

The setup inside was a little confusing and it took me a while to figure out where to go for checking out. I got a hot dog and scallion bun and it was very yummy! It was $3 if you pay cash which is pricey for the area (in my experience, it's usually $1 or $2 if you pay cash and $3 if you pay with card) but it was yummy so I don't mind. The lady at the checkout counter was friendly and packed the bun in a paper bag.

Super loud, super crowded, super grumpy, cash-only service. What's not to love ? Honestly, if it weren't for the delicious , warm, fresh baked goods, I wouldn't have a good thing to say about Tai Pan, but this place is actually delicious. It's what 85 degrees out on the west coast aspires to be and wishes they could replicate , but this is the real deal.

This bakery is always packed no matter what time of the day you come. Weekends are specially crowded so we usually like to come early. Today we came midday and we were surprised that many of the baked goods came out nice and warm so we grabbed several of these. We also tried the mango mochi for the first time and it was really soft chewy and a nice taste of fresh mango cream. We also brought home some egg tarts and many of our favorite bread pastries. A favorite stop whenever we're in Chinatown.

Overall: B // 4 stars Good value Chinese bakery with a large variety of classic comforts from pork floss buns to mango cakes to egg tarts. Cash only establishment, with most items under $3, so its easy to have a substantial meal for $10. None of the items are necessarily outstandingly addicting, but serves as a quick and easy comfort. Really delicious and authentic egg tarts. The ladies at the counter speak English so give them a beat they'll get your order right!

Taipan Bakery/Assorted Vanilla Cake: The line was as long as the Yangtze River, but it moved quick! The cake was light and moist. It tasted just as good as it looked with a neat panda decor. My only critique is the cream was not layered in between the cake.

Got a sponge cake, and it was a larger portion than other bakeries. The sponge cake was fluffy and tastes pretty good. The almonds on top can be omitted as it was soft and soggy. It was pretty packed in there on a Saturday afternoon

Solid place to get your Chinese baked goods. I always find myself coming back here to get pineapple buns, sponge cake, egg tarts, etc. They have it all! Just don't come too late in the day as they might sell out. I've also ordered their fruit birthday cakes before and they are the perfect amount of sweetness. They are also super generous with the fruit filling. The sponginess of the cake is so perfect. Make sure to bring cash! There's also ATMs all around in case you forget.

This is a small bakery with a good variety of buns and pastries. There were over 5 different types of pork buns. I enjoyed the pineapple pork bun, it was sweet and salty with a crunch. The shop is small and there is no where to eat inside. The service is just ok, hectic inside even on a Tuesday and they are cash only.

The best white custard tart I've ever tasted. The coconut balls are tops too. But it can be Ichaotic in there and all cash.

It depends on the filling. Moon cake filling is usually made from some fat (like lard) and some include "dan4 huang2" which are preserved salty egg yolk. It's actually my favorite part of the moon cake - biting into the salty creamy yolks surrounded… Read more

The orange has a base made of chocolate Rice Krispies. All of them have more fruity filling than the mousse. They are very fragile. I recommend eating there if you can. There was no place to sit down because of how busy it was but the staff kept the line moving quick enough. The place still seemed reasonably stocked with their desserts and treats, despite the late afternoon time that I arrived. I ordered 4 different treats to go and they're packed in small box individually. Unfortunately, they didn't quite stay intact during my trek back to my hotel and were tumbled around in the boxes. Nonetheless, the taste and flavors held up well and even after a few days in the fridge. The yuzu daisy has this vivid pastel yellow-pink base and adorable gelatinous yellow gem atop a white flower. The yuzu gives a subtle infusion of tart that is balanced out by the light delicate skin texture of the rest. Sitting atop a thin round rice crispy. I loved the red mushroom one which is a creamy pink mousse inside the cap. The stalk is a thin porcelain-white chocolate light base also filled with a rich cream. Adjacent are two cute little tree nuts. The orange and mango have such vivid colors and are aesthetically pleasing too. Just like the previous ones, their delicate chocolate exterior houses a rich tarty mousse-y filling. I think the mushroom has a better balance and variety of flavors. Although I don't eat mousse treats often, I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future, like the blueberry, banana and cloud.

Today I decided to make a special trip to go here to grab a few goodies. I forgot how small the place was and how low the ceilings were. That wasn't an issue though. The place was nice and cakes were stacked neatly. What was surprising to me is that they don't have any cookies laid in the front display. It's all placed in the back almost hidden. I was deeply disappointed with their cookie selection. It was deeply surprising that they don't sell the butter cookies that had jam in the middle and dipped with chocolate on one side with sprinkles. I did ask the clerk and even showed him a pic of what I was looking for and he said they never sold them. They only had the linzer cookies and they didn't look so good. They also did not have the lobster tail. They did have the sfogliatelle which they also called a lobster tail. I thought they were not the same? Some bakeries sell both and they are definitely not the same. I did end up buying one of their sfogliatelle with cream and some rugelachs. The sfogliatelle was good but the rugelachs tasted slightly underbaked. It did taste fresh though unlike many I've had in other bakeries. However, for $28 per pound, I wouldn't get it again. For those not having lobster tail and not having the Italian cookies, I will have to give Veniero's a low rating. I never thought an Italian bakery would not carry staples. Very disappointed. I need to find another Italian bakery now.
