Came in because my AC had a really funky moldy smell and Shawn was able to diagnose the issue right away. I came hear because my a/c in my car stopped working. The owner stated that he would recharge the refrigerant to see if he could get it to work... he said if he got it to work, I would pay him and if it did not work after recharging the refrigerant, it would be free. Well guess what, it did not work so that meant the service was free. What happened next? I was told it was my compressor. The price jumped exponentially. However, I was also told a new compressor may fix the a/c or it may not... then I was told I might need a new fan too. The costs just kept climbing. I initially agreed to getting the compressor but when I got home I decided against it because the technician did not give me a definitive diagnosis of what was wrong with my a/c. He kept telling me I can come back if my a/c stopped working again. He also did not give me anything in writing. I decided to pay Pep Boys for a full a/c system evaluation to get something in writing. For $9.99 I got a complete written a/c evaluation. No guessing or maybes like FCE Auto wanted to do. Shawn, the owner is very welcoming. He knows how to repair a/c systems. I just wish he could have given me a more definitive diagnosis of what was wrong with my a/c. read more

I have a 2007 BMW 530i with an AC issue of blowing cold air for a few minutes and then gone, and sometimes blowing warm air. I gave FCE Auto a call based on their very good reviews and was able to talk to Shawn. He asked me to bring my car to his shop and diagnosed the problem. He even spent time explaining to me how car AC system works and show some pictures to support his diagnosis. It came out that I have a bad compressor. Given the fact that the costs of the compressor plus labor would exceed the current value of my car, I opt not to do anymore further testing, so as not to incur a diagnosis charge, which he agreed. My experience working with Shawn to replace the AC in my BMW X5 was outstanding from start to finish. He was honest, detailed, and professional. My A/C went out in my 2001 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner and I took it to Firestone and they qouted me $2100 for a new condenser, A/C pump, hoses and labor. That is like half of what the truck is worth. So needed my AC serviced on my 03 Silverado. Came across Shawn's reviews after contacting a few other places. Shawn is straight to the point and you won't be given the runaround. Had AC serviced and unfortunately it didn't hold charge for more than 5 days. Shawn insisted I drop it off and leave it for home to diagnose further. Found the valves were leaking and so he replaced for an affordable price. Got truck back and after about 10-12 days it was losing charge again, so I contacted Shawn and again he said drop it off and he'll go through it again. After a couple days of testing found the condenser had small leak. Shawn pressurized the rest of the system and it held charge so that was good. So replaced condenser with lifetime warranty on the condenser. Respectfully with the time spent probably would have been double the cost.. I totally recommend Shawn for your AC needs. read more

Last year during one of several southern California heat waves, my air conditioner decided to call it quits. Not permanently, mind you, it will blow cold air for about 20 minutes and then decide the vents are plenty cold in 85+F weather and blow like a humid hair dryer. It was so bad, that my phone shut off because of overheating and I lost music and navigation. I read online that the compressor clutch relay could fail in Honda vehicles of my vintage, so I tried the cheapest attempt at a solution by swapping out the relay. Nope, no dice. Cold air for 20 to 30 minutes, followed by a blast reminiscent of Dubai in October (100F and humid). I didn't want to take this to the dealer, because there are no recalls and I just know they'll say it's the compressor which will cost over a thousand bucks plus hours of not having my car available. Well I know the compressor works when the HVAC system decides everything's working, because I'm getting cold air, temporarily. So I looked up mechanics in my area specializing in air conditioning, and I found this place tucked next to the city of Orange traffic circle (which is really a roundabout now, but whatever). I called Shawn, he said he could squeeze me in to see if the AC is even functioning. At first he thought, "compressor" and my heart sank. He then quickly said, "Well, let's try evacuating, cleaning, then recharging the registrant, you never know, and the machine will give us clues as to what's going on." So we hooked up the system, and the pressure was way higher than it should be, not a good sign. He ran the evac cycle and recovered about 0.43 pounds of refrigerant when there should be closer to 1 pound. "That's a slow leak," he said. He then ran a cleaning and recharge, pulling the recommended amount into the lines. The pressure was holding, but still a little high at 45 psi (? I actually don't remember the actual pressure units), when the correct pressure should be more like 35. We fired up the car and the AC, and it started blowing cold air. He recommended that I run water through the grille every now and again, so the hot side would have better airflow and cooling. The compressor shut off again on the way home. So why 5 stars? I thought at first the issue wasn't solved, so I figured I'll make do with the iffy AC until a couple weeks later when I have time to deal with it. But during my commute today in 90 degree weather, the AC held for longer and kicked back in more quickly without giving up after the compressor turned off. So what might have happened last year and every heat wave: the system shut off the compressor because it was detecting overpressure and the refrigerant was out of spec. But this time the compressor turned back on after a couple of minutes of cool-but-not-cold air, the pressure was lower and there was more refrigerant in the lines. If this is anything like the tire pressure monitors, I would need to drive the car for quite a bit until the system understands that there is the right amount of refrigerant in the system. So it's not ideal, but it's a lot better than before, and it might even improve as the fresh refrigerant circulates, so that's a win. Thanks Shawn! read more

Wow. Talk about amazing customer service, clear communication, and just an overall good guy. Went to Shawn for some HVAC concerns with my BMW 530e that was blowing warm air. Like an idiot, I tried to DIY with some refrigerant sold at O'Reilly's, which did not work. Shawn was professional, asked what steps I took, and informed me that if I had used the wrong refrigerant or used one that has anti-leak formula, my HVAC system would be toast. He checked the system (luckily I was OK and used the right formula), confirmed it was clean, evacuated the system again so it was empty, then refilled with clean refrigerant to see if that would fix the car. Cleared the error codes and told me to drive around for a few days to see if that would fix it. If so, great. If not (and his guy said it would not), he told me to come back and schedule a deeper dive into the system. Summary--the refrigerant wasn't the issue so much as the AC Compressor died (I had just surpassed the 100k mile marker). He swapped in a new one and it was blowing cold air again. Shawn was very organized (in telling me when to drop off the car and his estimate on when he thought it would be done) which was nice as it allowed me to go about my day after dropping it off and expecting it to be done. I can't highly recommend Shawn enough for his great service! A couple of days ago, my car started shaking and the warning lights went on. I knew I had dropped by his shop in the past and he dropped everything to attend to me. So I drove a couple blocks and he happened to be there at 6 PM. He attended to me right away and said I needed a new coil and spark plug. He stressed to me that I only have to have one but most shops want to replace all of them which would've been horribly expensive. The next day he said it was ready and he mentioned in passing he had stayed in the shop till one in the morning working. Shawn does his best to explain exactly what's going on with your car by playing YouTube videos and educating you on the problem and the solution. This is extremely helpful and most mechanics are really vague when it comes to telling you what's going on with your car. He has high integrity and an extremely high work ethic. My review date ranges back from 2013 to 2017 while I was living in the area. There's things I miss about the OC. I didn't realize how much of a gem Shawn would be to me and the cars I put him through. I consider it luck that he was referred to me by his son that used to work with my mom LOL! Do not be put off by how his shop looks. He is a real car guy and really cares about doing a good job the first time. If it isn't right, he always makes the effort to get it right even if it means trying all the stops and getting all the right parts. He's done routine stuff, big projects like 100k mile and everything in between. He even figured out I had a bad cell in my battery in my 2012 Civic. He's worked on our 1995 Accord, 2008 Lexus ES, multiple Corollas, her 2013 Fit, on and on. He uses OEM at really competitive prices. As busy as he is, he always seemed to be ready for anyone at any time. A true car wizard. I'll be really scared if/when he retires. read more

Wasted $350 on recharge AC and didn't last for more than a few days. Granted I was told $300 for the recharge he didn't really even look for the leak. Said Will provided one free recharge within 3 months. He replaced the 2 schraider valve (like bicycle tube valve) and charged $50 which only took him like a few mins to replace. read more

I drove in without an appointment for an AC issue, and my car happened to be starting to overheat on the way down. Shawn looked at my car immediately and addressed the fluid in the radiator and looked for the leak, something I'll get fixed another time if it comes back. Once that immediate crisis was over he looked at my AC which was progressively getting worse over time. It was blowing AC for a few minutes then it would call it quits. After him and his assistant looked things over, we did a purge and recharge and it was only at .6. The computer indicated a leak, so Shawn suggested a recharge to get it to full pressure and then monitoring over the next few months to see if/when it fails again. This solves my immediate need of having a car with AC. He showed me a diagram and then videos of each segment of what my car has on his computer, how each can fail (from previous customers), and how he will do diagnostics next time. I left with a working AC in this heat, a clear picture of what and how it will be handled next time at a great price, with the knowledge that what I spent today wasn't gone if the issue comes back quickly and he'd apply this amount towards the repairs. I asked a lot of questions too and he took time to explain what each part/option was and for what relevance it had.
