We have enjoyed this restaurant twice. The first time we enjoyed it so much that we told good friends who wanted to try it immediately. We were back a few days later. This is a small space and it doesn't take reservations. There is one place where six people can dine together. We arrived early the second time and were seated in that place with two other couples. Both times service was friendly and professional. Beverages came quickly and food quickly enough. One reviewer says it is the best Italian food he has ever had. There are better places in Italy and metropolitan places in the United States. There is no doubt that this is the best Italian food on the North Coast. We have been to many restaurants: some open and others that are no longer in business. There are two we like a lot and regularly patronize. Each offers good food and drink and (usually) service. The service here is very good. It exceeds one restaurant we like and most days is better than another. The wine list is exceptional. The first time my wife and I found a good bottle of Italian wine from their wine list. It offers a good selection of red and white. The second time we bought by the glass and there are enough choices to satisfy me. They serve drinks, as well, the Manhattans I had both times were pretty good. The menu is extensive for such a small restaurant with a tiny kitchen in the middle of the room. The ingredients were fresh. We liked our salads. The pasta dishes were tasty. In two trips we have only had four dishes and they tasted good, that is they were closer to Italian cooking than other places we have been on the coast. My wife agrees with me on this and she has a better sense of taste than I do. The lemon tart dessert the first time was great. The second time my wife had tiramisu and didn't enjoy the way it was prepared but she was told in advance how it is prepared. Our friends who joined us were enthusiastic about the dining experience and have been with us at the competing restaurants in this area. Fede is AMAZING!!! The food is some of the best I've ever had. All handmade pasta and bread...everything is super fresh. Delicious!!! I'll admit, the owners are friends of mine but I wouldn't say this if it wasn't true. Faith and Sean are genuinely wonderful and talented people who have poured their hearts and souls into this place and it really shows. Everything they do there is with love and it comes through in the beautiful and carefully curated ambiance and the absolutely wonderful food! The place isn't huge so it fills up fast and there might be a wait but worth it for sure. Definitely my favorite restaurant in Astoria! And it would be even if I didn't know Faith and Sean. We had a spectacular dinner here. The good and service were both outstanding. Great wine list. Incredibly generous portions for the price. And what a location! Definitely a place to return to. This place is a GEM. We're always on the lookout for quality Italian food. Fede naaaailed it. The menu had lots to offer for each course which made it hard to choose. We had the cheese plate, romaine salad, octopus, carbonara, cabbage, and olive oil cake. We split everything and were stuffed - and we can put down some food :) The cheese plate and accompaniments with the fresh bread was a perfect start to share with just the right amount where you're appreciating each bite and getting to savor the taste. The salad was fresh and crispy with the right amount of dressing and cheese, and the albacore and not out of a bag croutons were a great addition to take a simple salad and make it a little more "yes" factor. We go out to very rarely so I do a ton of cooking (which I love to do), and I had recently said if we ever get to Italy or go anywhere that has octopus on the menu (and looks like they know what they're doing) I'm getting it because it's one of those things I don't want to attempt to do at home. So I was uber excited to see it on the menu and holy mother of 8 lb 6oz newborn infant jesus... that was our favorite of the night. Awesome texture. The light sauce with the potatoes and olives were a perfect pairing. It was the type of simple but like, complex item because it's all working together how you want so you taste each thing separately but together? I dunno. It was bomb. Next - never had carbonara so we did that and yep. Awesome. Fresh noodles and SUPER RICH, super creamy. It was a flavor slap in the mouth but in a good, do it again way. The cabbage I wanted to try because I cook it a lot and just wanted to see how someone else did it. Yeah... another 11/10 item. Perfect amount of browning and flavor and texture. The olive oil cake was 200% my cup of tea - not like eating a spoonful of sugar with each bite. It was nice, just sweet enough, light, and a little citrusy. Drinks were awesome as well. I had the limoncello spritz thing and the man's had a cocktail with grappa in it. He's been looking for grappa for a while and them having it would get them five stars in itself. He also had it on its own as an after dinner drink and I'm pretty sure you could fuel a car with it but it was cool that he finally got to try it. Staff was stellar. The mrs half of the owners was super cool and we had a great conversation - she's super knowledgeable, makes awesome beverages, and just chatting with her you can tell their hearts are 200% in it with this place. The chef Mr half of the owners definitely knows what he's doing in the kitchen - the quality of ingredients and what he does with them, obviously from the above novel, is awesome. Everything about this place is wonderful. The service, the ambiance, the cocktails, THE FOOD! I literally can't stop thinking about the lasagna I ordered. My companion and I ordered three things we shared them. Our last very expensive dish came, octopus. The owners wife said it's so tender and good. When we received it it was obviously very over cooked with black spots on the octopus. The outside was chewy like leather, the inside was not moist or tender and there was no seasoning whatsoever not even salt. I am a cook and I know about food. Gordon Ramsay would've spit it out immediately. We both had a few bites and couldn't finish it as it was flavorless and chewy and tough. I ordered a root beer that came in a can and was room temperature. For an Italian restaurant there was no olive oil or balsamic vinegar available for the bread. So I ask for butter. The $14 Glass of wine which consisted of maybe 2 ounces was outrageous. I asked for butter for the bread as the waiter kept removing our plates so any minimal juice that was left at all on them was taken away. I could've cooked these dishes much better When we received the bill they had charged us two dollars for about a tablespoon of butter. There was no apology for the octopus that was inedible there was no offering of removing it from the bill or offering a dessert or anything. As a matter of fact I got attitude. From the owners wife. As we were leaving I whispered quietly to her that they might want to tell people they charge for butter. She was very irritated and said it's on the menu, do you want me to show you. I said no and walked out. I looked back inside and she was bitching to one of the employees about me, then she came outside and told me how she didn't appreciate that, and she didn't want me to ever come back to the restaurant. I have been a cook for years I have been a waiter for years and would never talk to anybody like that. Or offer them to remove the dish and not pay for it, or offer them some thing. All I was offered was attitude and I was 86 forever. I would never recommend this place and have nothing good to say about it. Most people never give an honest feedback when asked how is your food. We should have sent the dish back immediately. Like I said Gordon Ramsay would've spit it out immediately and raked them over the coals. Bad experience read more

Fede Trattoria has exactly what I look for in a memorable dining experience: friendly, attentive service, cozy, chill ambiance, and deliciously prepared dishes made with love. The menu is varied with coursed selections that are unique (deviled eggs...ah-mazing), fresh housemade pasta's (that lasagna... do not pass it up), and crisp, refreshing salads, dressed delicately and perfectly. The carefully-curated cocktails, wine selection, and local beer offerings complement the menu in the best way. The flavors are truly wonderful, and bonus...the chef/owner has primo taste in music with a dining soundtrack that is fantastic! We ate there twice during our stay, it's that good. After walking around town, we came upon this hidden gem. We weren't intending to go out for Italian food, but what a fabulous decision. This food was so incredible. The Italian-inspired cocktails were delicious and the wine list was extensive. All of their pasta is made in house. The sauces, the cheeses, the vinaigrettes, the vegetables, the meatballs...even the butter tasted amazing. There was a simplicity to the ingredients, you could taste the perfect balance. Everything tasted so amazing. We ate until we couldn't eat another bite. Our waitress was lovely. The manager calmly managed a very busy restaurant with ease and attention. Part of Fedé's charm, apart from the warm welcome from Faith Davenport, is the intimate space. The only problem with Fedé is the intimate space...chef Sean Hammond's attention to detail and creativity in every dish is starting to draw crowds. There are no reservations and it's not set up for large groups but the wait will be worth your while. Last night was the best dining experience my wife and I have had in quite a while. We were so happy to find a new dining option in Astoria. The servers were so friendly, the drinks and wine by the glass were lovely, and the food was amazing. The pasta is made fresh in-house. We had super fresh green salads and tasty focaccia with olive oil to start. We had the ravioli with chard and ricotta - fabulous - and the bucatini with clams - absolutely delicious! The ambience was homey, and the prices were reasonable. It was a perfect meal. We will absolutely visit Fede next time we are in Astoria!! read more

So, the meal started out with a couple of beers while waiting. Buoy Beer! A hometown favorite. Bottled two blocks away! How much for a can of Buoy beer? $9!! Fede lost me at that point. My pasta was delicious but my husband's rockfish was two little strips that looked like it came from a freezer: $14. Great staff, great service but someone needs to set these folks straight. Oh, how I wanted to love this new place. The staff was welcoming, the location and interior charming, the ambiance quite cozy on what turned out to be a drizzly evening by the river, and the pre-dinner house-made mocktails excellent. Sadly, things went totally downhill, fast. The food was simply awful, perhaps not quite as bad as Bridgewater Bistro, but bad. A side dish of brocolli, which should have been flash fried in EVOO with garlic and chili flakes, perhaps some anchovy, and certainly seasoned with at least a little salt, was a soggy overcooked flavorless mess served swimming in water. I yearned for LIttle Joe's in North Beach in SF. The clams Bucccatini was again unseasoned, just steamed clams dumped onto way too al dente pasta. The Depot on the other side of the river has a stellar version of the dish. And the meatballs, which were huge, had us wanting far smaller ones. I hankered for those at Tony's in North Beach. While those three places may set too high a standard in comparison, the menu here seems to want to focus on simple, quickly cooked, but well seasoned, classics using high quality ingredients, which did seem to be in use at Fede, but the execution of every dish failed completely. With that said, the service was pleasant and competent and not to be faulted, except perhaps for our waiter not realizing that at least the water should have been drained off the drowning brocolli before said plate of dying vegetables was deposited before us. read more
