The last two times I've come here I've overheard the staff talking sh*t about the customers including the sour blonde lady who said "whatever, I don't f*cking care" in regards to a customer's order. Honestly pretty disappointing. I heard a lot of good things about this place but it was pretty mid. I got the slider and for $5 I was expecting a lot more. The chicken was really hot but everything else on the sandwich, including the bun, was ice cold. It was also put together really poorly and fell apart as soon as I opened the wrapper. We flew red eye into PHL and landed around 5 AM so after getting our rental car and before heading to see family in NJ, my spouse and I drove around our old neighborhood. We used to frequent the original location off of 2 St when we started dating many years ago. Saw this spot on South St and were the first to enter at 7 AM after we dilly dallied as much as possible. The person working there was super kind and patient and even went the extra mile to make sure our 5 year old was content. There was a box of books for kids to read, plenty of seats, and even though things seem big and corporate kinda, they stuck to some of the touches from the first place with chicken wire in the case and the brown sugar and cinnamon AND cookies and cream hot donut flavors. I was a little disappointed that lavender is now strawberry lavender but then I ate it and that feeling turned to joy. The bathroom was clean, the la Colombe coffee was solid, and it was nice to feel warm and fuzzy by getting our first federal donuts fix in a longggggg time. read more

It's been a while since I've reviewed one of my favorite chicken and donut havens, so I may as well review their South Street outpost! I realize all of my old Federal Donuts reviews were five-star bangers, and honestly, that's more testament to it being both a new and refreshing destination and things like fried chicken sandwiches and donuts being so widespread and everywhere nowadays. This isn't to say that it's declined in anyway (far from it, just that it's evolved into a tried and true old reliable. Even though you can get them everywhere now, the Federal Donuts fried chicken sandwich still holds up as my favorite in Philly. And the zatar spiced wings are always a delicious revelation. When it comes to the donuts I always go for the special ones, especially when they're in honor of South Street, the Eagles, and David Bowie! The South Street location is one of the better for sitting down and grabbing a bite to eat. Toss in caffeinated beverages like their decadent Vietnamese iced coffee, and its also great to grab and go. read more

I've had a love-hate relationship with Federal Donuts over the years. Wait. Hate is a strong word. I've never hated them. Maybe disappointed. The first time I visited their original location over 10 years ago I thought their chicken was dry and overrated. I didn't get the hype. Now I am far more forgiving. My son wanted chicken tenders and fries today and we were in the area. So this wound up being the call. I got the wings. And I'll say this. They kind of remind me of the wing dings that you get at local pizza joints. But I will say these are definitely higher quality. Good crunch to the outside and they pair well with the barbecue sauce. I tasted a chicken finger and it was the same thing. They're really good. I'm not sure they're best in the city level but maybe they don't have to be. They were just good quality and that's enough. Now I've never had the Za'Atar seasoned fries. There they won me over. They're not too overpowering with the seasoning. It's just a perfect level. There I was impressed. And the cinnamon sugar donuts... that's where they get me to "Holy s**t these are phenomenal" level. Those are best in the city level in my mind. Same as the past couple reviews. Past two times breakfast sandwich was pretty bad. Egg was hot, cheese was cold, bacon was rubbery and cold. It was gross. FOOD I've been to Federal Donuts twice now, both at their South Street location. They are known for their cake donut selection and meal combos with fries, fried chicken (tenders and sandwiches), etc. I have ordered the fig mascarpone and the spiced pear a la mode donuts. Both were spiced well in the interior, and the glaze on top was reminiscent of cream cheese and was a little too sweet at times. That being said, it's a nice Philadelphia staple to go to when showing friends/family around town, and their seasonal flavors are nice to try every now and then. They usually switch up one of their specialty donuts every other week rotate new ones in accordingly. DRINKS Various drinks are available, from hot/cold coffee, cold brews, lattes, soda, bottled water, and even Vietnamese iced coffee. SERVICE The staff are kind and helpful. The menu at Federal Donuts is simple, which isnt necessarily a bad thing; their menu consists of chicken and donuts. I've had their chicken before and I personally think you could get better fried chicken elsewhere (BBQ Chicken, Moon Flower House, MBL&Q Burger, etc.). However, I do think that their donuts are definitely worth getting, as stated in other reviews. They serve a variety of cake donuts, which includes more permanent classics flavors and a rotating selection of unique flavors, which they call their fancy donuts. I like that the cake donuts aren't too dense or too sweet. Most recently, I tried their Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Donut, which is one of their fancy donuts. I liked the additional texture of the toasted oat crumble. Also, there was the slightest addition of salt on the crumble, which I thought balanced out the donut. Would I go back? : Perhaps. Federal Donuts would probably be one of my top places to get a donut but I usually don't go out of my way to get donuts. read more

Cold food and Bad attitudes. On Sunday April 27th at 9:45 a.m., my mother and I came to the Federal Donuts located on 540 South street in Queens Village, Philadelphia. I've gone to different Federal Donut locations throughout the city and have always had pleasant experiences. However, the experience I had at this location was absolutely deplorable. I didn't obtain the names of the two individuals that almost begrudgingly helped us, but they were distinctly unpleasant. The young lady with hair twists was dismissive, and the young man with two tone hair color served us ice cold breakfast sandwiches and then refused to warm them up. The cheese wasn't melted and the bread was just out of the refrigerator. The establishment was not busy, so there was no need for them to rush our order. The young lady with twists said it was against store policy to warm up sandwiches once they have been served. A note of advice would be to warm the bread and cheese for the sandwich so they aren't ice cold and properly match the description given on the menu. The one positive out of this travesty of an experience was the old fashioned glazed donuts which are ALWAYS delicious! I would not recommend this location. read more

A quick stop by this cozy, classic cake donut shop as we bought a spiced pear a la mode donut for ~$3. The flavor was honestly there as you could taste the pear, spice, and the thick glaze on top as well. I am personally not a huge fan of the sour nodes or flavors from pears and apples, so I was not avid about this donut. I loved the different choices that were offered instead of just the basic flavors. Came in and got 6 donuts. 1 of the cinnamon sugar which is made fresh to order and a bunch of the "fancy" doughnuts. My favorite was the cinnamon sugar one because it was nice and hot. I also liked the one with pistachio on the top. The Nutella one tasted exactly like a brownie to me. The banana doughnut was my least favorite. It didn't have good balance. Over all they were ok. No surprise here, but the chicken sandwich was absolutely delicious! For $8.50, you definitely get your money's worth. Somehow everytime we come to the east coast, I always seem to go on a donut tour. We were staying with some friends who lived right by this Federal Donuts. We've heard a lot of good things and decided to stop by here to tide us over before a brunch reservation later on. We walked over here on a Sunday morning around 11:30 AM. It wasn't too crowded and there was only 2 people in front of us. The three of us decided to just get half a dozen of the hot and fresh donuts to share. Our friend has had the other speciality donuts before but highly recommended the hot and fresh ones as all donuts are better fresh out of the fryer. The cashier was super friendly and chatted with our friend that lived there. When she learned that my fiance and I were getting married, she comped us the iced coffee we were getting. Super friendly and generous. The donuts took a little bit to get out, but they were made to order. When we got the box, it smelled amazing and was very warm. We walked back to our friend's place before digging in. These donuts were everything. Warm, fresh, soft, and perfect. The strawberry lavendar was my favorite. You could clearly taste the two distinct flavors, and they melded perfectly together. The cinnamon sugar one was fantastic as well. I could eat half a dozen myself. I used to crave the Federal Doughnuts Fried Chicken Sandwich. Their fried chicken was the best thing they sold but no more. They've cheaped out making the breasts half their thickness, sprinkling on some Korean spices, then deep frying and burning those spices creating a tough, inedible piece of chicken leather. My sandwich had none of the promised sauce nor the extra I requested on the side. A great disappointment all around. Since I had taken it two blocks to home to eat it, I did not have time to go back to give them another shot. They once had perfection and deliberately ruined it. No longer a destination sandwich. I think they'll lose a great number of customers who will be disappointed once and have no reason to return for more savory dreams to be dashed. I phoned and they credited my credit card for the fiasco. The doughnuts have always looked more enticing than they've tasted so they are very resistable. I ordered a passion fruit donut and wow was it tasty. It was a cake donut and the icing was light enough and balanced by the tartness of the passion fruit that it didn't taste too sweet. I wish I hadn't been so full because I would have ordered several, they all looked amazing! It's also a great place to grab one to go and walk around the neighborhood!
