About every time I go to Federal Donuts, I have a five star experience so this place has always impressed me with its consistency and commitment to customer service. Recently, I found my chicken sandwich to be on the smaller side, looking almost like they accidentally used a tender instead of the usual breast (or half breast?). Today, I ordered an Early Bird breakfast sandwich (which did have a tender in it) and Hot Cocoa donut and they were really good. The smell of the sandwich permeates the air like a hot breakfast fresh off the grill. After I finished mine, I could smell the aroma of the sandwich on a freshly ordered one two seats away from me. The look and smell of the donuts makes me want not one but three, but I know that if I did that, I'd be fat as a house. The attention to detail on the little things really count and do get noticed. Take a look at the caps on the cups. Other restaurants can learn from this. Whatever caps they use on their fountain drinks... it's a phenomenal cap that won't pop off even when you squeeze the cup real hard. The branding on their cups, bags, and all around the store are sensational. Solomonov's team has done a great job on the logo. Now, I will say that there are some people who prefer the other type of donut - the fried dough donut - versus Federal Donut's cake donut. I sometimes flip back and forth between the two, but you can't dislike cake donuts. Each "Fancy" or "Classic" donut is like a little Bundt cake or cupcake. If you don't like cupcakes or Bundt cakes, you have no soul. Believe it or not, you can order a salad from Federal Donuts. I also got the chicken bacon ranch ranch. Crispy fried chicken thin like a cutlet, ranch seasoning and sauce, lettuce, bacon, and a potato roll. So when I heard that FedNuts was moving to a bigger Rittenhouse location, it led to me hitting another of their destinations that I would have reviewed sooner if I wasn't a slacker. And while it still holds up as a classic it is a testament to how much it has changed over the years. Back in the day next to those glorious donuts, the main staples of the menu were incredible fried chicken and chicken wings. While you might still be able to get those at other FedNuts locations (it's been a while), The main emphasis next to the donuts is their chicken sandwiches. While they're still good, especially when they team up with Pace Salsa to make a caliente chipotle version, it also makes me yearn for the days that I could enjoy some buttermilk fried chicken here. And while Zatar spice is still delicious on fries, it makes me miss having it on their incredible chicken wings! Despite that main omission, it's still a great amalgamation of FedNuts new and old complete with that NoseGo mural. I also got the chocolate orange, which is a chocolate cake donut with sweet orange glaze and milk chocolate glaze drizzle. They were both made perfect. The choco orange definitely looked the best, but I'd give the flavor award to the cereal glaze. As someone who generally doesn't enjoy cake donuts, Federal Donuts' are among the best I've had. We ordered a FIG MASCARPONE donut ($3), which is one of the specialty "fancy" donuts, and a COOKIES N CREAM ($2) donut, which is one of the simpler spiced donuts that are made to order. Both were good -- the fig mascarpone had an excellent, thick mascarpone glaze that made up for the traditional denseness of the cake donut itself, while the fresh donut was plainer in flavor but lighter and satisfyingly warm. In fact, we enjoyed the flavor of the fig donut so much that we also snagged a Too Good to Go order, which for $5 consisted of six donuts remaining around 6 PM. This was an excellent deal, as the donuts were from that same day and the store staff checked with us about allergies and restrictions before assembling the box with all of the other fancy donuts we hadn't tried yet. Among those, I most enjoyed the BUTTERSCOTCH BLONDIE (with a caramel glaze and butterscotch chips) and BAKLAVA (honey walnut glaze and crunchy cinnamon brown sugar katafi), especially when reheated at home. I was probably most excited about the BANANA STAND (banana cake donut with dark chocolate glaze), but found it fairly underwhelming. Overall, definitely recommend stopping by here if you like donuts, but I suggest warming the fancy donuts up a bit so that they're less dry and dense. read more

I always get the chicken sandwich and some donuts when I go to federal Donuts. The chicken sandwich was the usual level of deliciousness I have come to expect from Federal Donuts. A thick perfectly fried piece of chicken with pickles and sauce in a bun. The ratio of chicken to bun isn't always perfect and I think that a slightly thicker and higher quality bun would really take the sandwich over the top. I generally get the hot fresh cinnamon donuts, as they are made fresh and are cheaper than the other donuts. I try to just eat one, but sometimes I have to get 2. They are so good. The best version I've ever had of a cinnamon donut. The more expensive fancy donuts are tasty too, but not worth the extra cost in my mind. By far my favorite fancy donut is the pumpkin spiced latte, but they only sell it on rare occasions. I haven't been able to get one for years at this point. Why they don't sell their best donut every day is beyond my comprehension. This Federal Donuts location will be a permanent part of my lunch rotation. Everyone talks about federal donuts so we had to give them a try when in Philly. Pros - very cute shop that wasn't too busy. The staff were really nice and helpful. They have lattes and coffee drinks with oat milk which was a nice surprise. The chicken was crispy and tasty! Cons - unfortunately we weren't all that impressed with the donuts. They're all cake donuts and when warm are good, but none were that amazing. We got a half dozen to try different ones and overall felt they were pretty dry and just okay. I saw this place on a food show years ago and have wanted to try ever since. Visited someone in Philly for the day and swung by this place around 5pm on a Sunday. Zero line, but all the specialty flavored doughnuts were sold out (which I had anticipated). I ordered all three flavors of the Hot Fresh Donuts. The key is so eat them while they're actually hot and fresh! Honestly, the actual flavors weren't anything spectacular, but having them served hot really set them apart from other doughnut places where they're served room temp. -Cinnamon Brown Sugar: this was the best flavor. -Cookies and Cream: doesn't taste like that at all, but still tastes good. -Strawberry Lavender: didn't like. I normally like fruity doughnuts, but this tasted a little too fake and perfume-like. -3 Piece Fried Chicken with Buttermilk Seasoning: OMG. This was soooo good. Next time I'll get the wings set because the larger piece of chicken that it comes with is on the dry side. But the drumstick and wing I ate were heavenly. After the demolition of the Sansom block that used to be home to its Rittenhouse outpost, FedNuts relocated to a posh new storefront closer to the park. The flagship store is modern and clean. Garage door windows and high ceilings feel roomy, and funky incandescent-bulb chandeliers hang from a golden recess. The space sports a red-white-and-blue color palette with a long communal bartop and schoolhouse desk single-seat booths. A brightly lit donut display case greets you immediately upon entering, and a wide window running along the back wall gives you a glimpse into the kitchen. Merch, a red-and-blue neon "Federal Donuts" sign, and custom chicken-donut-and-coffee wallpaper deck one wall, while a colorfully absurdist mural against whitewashed brick is painted onto the other. Modern, offbeat music resonates around the room. I first visited this new location back in the spring, looking to nab one of the limited-release Pastelito donuts -- spiced cake with cream cheese glaze and a guava ring. The donut was small but surprisingly dense and heavy, sporting a tasty and unmistakably guava cream. More recently, I took advantage of FedNuts' donut deals, running the gamut of all available specialty donuts: Rocky Road (chocolate cake with marshmallow glaze, chocolate chips, and almonds); Blueberry Shortstack (blueberry cake with buttermilk glaze and maple crumbs), Pumpkin Cream (spiced cake with pumpkin glaze, pie crumble, and vanilla cream cheese drizzle); Lemon Ginger (spiced cake with honey ginger glaze and a lemon ring); and Amaretto Affogato (spiced cake with coffee glaze and amaretto drizzle).
