Spread Bagelry on 20th has been one of my neighborhood breakfast spots since 2017, and it never disappoints. Before coming here, I'd never really experienced Montreal-style bagels, and now I absolutely love them. The wood-fired finish gives them a slightly crisp exterior while still staying chewy inside, and they're equally great as breakfast sandwiches or with schmears. I usually order the sausage, egg, and cheese. I think the technical "standard" sandwich on the menu is bacon, egg, and cheese, but I'm a sausage guy. Add a coffee or juice, and it's a perfect low-key breakfast. The setup is excellent: indoor seating, outdoor tables, quick service, and enough variety to make it feel like a true breakfast spot rather than just a bagel counter. The staff is always warm and helpful, and they feel like true Philly locals. You can tell this place was built with love. Spread also complements places like Kismet really well. Philly's lucky to have both. Different styles, different vibes, both excellent. My appreciation for this place even pushed me to visit St-Viateur in Montreal after seeing it featured on Somebody Feed Phil. That trip made me appreciate Spread even more because these bagels absolutely hold up. There's also a great Philly episode of the show. Spread offers fair pricing for consistently excellent food and is a reliable neighborhood staple. It's great seeing them continue to expand around Philadelphia. Highly recommended! read more

Honestly really disappointed. Ordered via DoorDash - iced mocha, plain untoasted bagel with butter, and side order of bacon. Latte had a pool of chocolate syrup at the bottom and would not mix, wasn't given a straw. Bagel was toasted with next to no butter so it hardened quickly and wasn't great. Bacon was literally iced cold and covered in grease. And to top it off, there were long hairs wrapped up in the wrapper of my bagel. I keep getting disappointed by Spread, so I think I'm done. The reason? I always find the bagels to have a bitter taste from a little bit of char, which I do not find appealing. Spread is also super popular, so it takes a long time for your order to come out - including if you order in advance online - so for me, the combination of a so-so bagel and a long wait are not worth it. Warning: If you have any respiratory issues, you might want to stay outside this small eatery. The bagels are made with a wood-fire in front of you, which is actually pretty cool to watch, but smoke tends to fill the space. Too be treated w/ such disrespect is an understatement... I had a catering order that I was the driver for...the KOP staff wasn't prepared, telling me they didn't receive it until 15mins after I was onsite, even though I had it since 12pm the prior day.. they took their frustration out on me, being very condescending and rude, to the point I felt uncomfortable and waited in my car for completion and for my company to get further directions... when I returned to retrieve my order, they have given it away...and the cashier real aggressively kept asking where I was and they sent it out the back door so they will get my tip and payment... the distance and time I spent to make this order is insane..and for these businesses to continue to take advantage of people bc they feel as though they can is unacceptable...im a single parent of a non verbal/IDD child...this is the only way i can make income at this time...and to be treated like this is sad.. read more

I ordered tuna salad on an egg bagel. It was life changing. Bagel was good, but the tuna salad was fantastic. I think it had some shrimp or crab in it as well. When I have a bagel brunch, this is my go-to order so I've had them from many many other stores. Ever ordered a common item that was just a level above? I came into the shop in Wayne at noon on a Saturday. The order was up in less than 5 minutes and the server helped me understand how bagels are actually made (kettle & oven) and the meaning of "Montreal style" bagels. The shop really clean, with creative wood tables. Someone was in the corner comfortably fielding a Zoom meeting on her laptop, a table of high school students was gaggling and parents & children were lunching. A really great find. read more

See below... What I snagged: -Whitefish everything bagel with all the fixings. (Bagel isn't better than any NY bagel, but it'll do. What wasn't great was the bone found in my white fish that got stuck between my teeth. I get it, it's fresh, but come on) Overall, cool experience, but not sure I'll be back. Spread is popular so a visit on the weekends could result in a longer than preferred wait time. My recommendation is to order ahead online! This option has never failed me. Okay, second chance review. Ordered an everything bagel not toasted with cream cheese (no drink) = total bill $4.05. This is just a warning for those that will have sticker shock as this trumps the most expensive bagel with cream cheese I have purchased in a long time. The bagel is crisp, almost cakey, and a very ample serving of whipped cream cheese is lathered on both faces of the bagel. As I was eating this bagel which was cut down the middle so we have four portions to eat and really dissect the flavor I noticed a recurring bitter taste. I can say this is a unique establishment and I love that it exists but I prefer a doughy fresh bagel and not oven baked. I've been coming here for years and the service and quality has gone way, way down. I think it's the most popular location? Which is why it's so confusing that it's so incredibly bad. Ex. The new sandwich with hollandaise? They put a PILE of hollandaise, no one needs that much. Plus it tastes terrible. Ex. The Carnegie breakfast sandwich? Assembled with the meat all contained on one half of the sandwich, which leaves the other half as just egg and cheese if you don't adjust it. Ex. Frittata scramble? The tomato quality has gone way down and tastes terrible, ruins the whole sandwich. They don't care. The service is complete trash, if the register staff aren't there then everyone ignores you. And the register staff are constantly turning over. To add to all of this, the place is constantly filled with smoke to the extent that it is 1000% a health hazard. They don't care. No one cares. This place SCREAMS of no one caring about quality, service, or even their own health. these are not your typical jersey bagel! They are a Montreal style bagel. They are very crispy on the outside, so really great if you're looking for that crunch. I personally prefer a softer bagel overall. What I do like about this place is the really unique flavors and that the bagels are truly stuffed! This is definitely really nice place to go to if you're looking for something out of the ordinary aside from your basic pork roll egg and cheese bagel. They have a lot of different types of cream cheese that I have not tried yet. The staff are always very nice and the place is so beautiful inside. It is small, but decorated so nicely. Overall really unique flavors, not my personal favorite but if you're looking for a crunch bagel with really unique toppings then this is the place for you. I was craving a breakfast sandwich and thought I might make it a little heartier by getting a bagel one specifically which led to searching for a solid bagel place nearby me. Spread has a really impressive selection of all kinds of bagel sandwiches, and so their menu got me hooked initially. I'm so glad I ordered from here - the kinds of bagels they have is also pretty varied too. I got The Club on a sesame bagel (turkey, cheddar, bacon, apple, and honey mustard mayo) and my partner got the Carnegie Breakfast (pastrami, eggs, provolone) on an everything bagel. The bagels were nicely toasted and were stuffed to the brim - we were both really happy with our orders. Everything was really delicious, the meats were good and the cheese was melty, and the combination overall was just delicious. We also ordered whitefish on the side to go, and another time carried out a half dozen bagels with their scallion cream cheese and were super happy with this as well. Their cream cheese spread selection is great and also just so delicious and has a unique whipped kind of texture to it. During COVID they make it easy to order takeout - you can walk up or do online and take it to go. I think these Montreal style bagels are amazing. Thinner and freshly wood fired. I usually get an everything bagel. I had the lox sandwich which is good. The maple bacon cream cheese is good if you like sweet cream cheese, the scallion is amazing and the lox spread is good but not worth the money, IMO. Coffee is decent, they sometimes run out of black tea. I always go when I am in Philly or Bryn Mawr (they have several locations in the area.) read more

I honestly went in there looking for a bathroom (upset stomach and a plane to catch!), but came out with a great coffee (they use a Philly local, La Colombe, which is amazing coffee) and, then as I was about to leave with only that, decided that the smell and look of the bagels were irresistible, and so, ordered a bagel with cream cheese to go too.
