i loved this bakery and recommended it to friends! the lemon raspberry cake was so good. I had not been back for a short while...and i noticed a big difference. The cake was more expensive and smaller..not a problem, costs go up..BUT..the lemon was no existent, a flavoring vs an ingredient, and the raspberry minimal. It was mostly a cream cake..cheap product cream for 23 dollars ...again..willing to pay but not for cream ..looking for lemon and raspberry. So disappointed and will not go back! read more

This is most definitely the best bakery south of Portland. Might even be the best in greater Portland other than a few places that specialize in one or two items. However for pastries, this is the place. If it's in the case at Fernleaf, it's going to taste good. Highlights for me are the almond croissants and cannoli cake. I never get there early enough to score a savory croissant or hand pie, really want to try those. Good sandwiches as well, primarily due to great house made bread. Nice place to sit and have coffee or tea, and decent selection of some wines and beers as well. You can tell that the intent is a nice neighborhood spot with a small selection of very good things, and they're pulling it off. read more

I have had two extremely delicious sandwiches here - the roasted vegetable and the pesto chicken salad. A small but creative sandwich menu. The bakery items have been solid. Great coffee. Small, cozy and clean, this side-street eatery is worth a visit. I can see me changing this review to five stars if I get blown away a few more times. read more

Love this place. It's locally owned and the coffee and pastries are to die for. The coffee comes in great sizes. The almond bear claw is one of my favorite things. Beware if there's a line it does take a bit of time is it's a small place. I appreciate they carry other locally made goods. read more

My family stays in Saco and Old Orchard Beach most summer, and many offseason weekends. We always look forward to getting a fabulous pastry at Fernleaf. We take all our guests there. The coffee is great and all our kids love eating in the quaint little cafe which is a breath of fresh air compared to the packed and littered commercialized shops and chains. It's on a side road but close to the action. Let's face it, most sweets nowadays are not even worth the calories as they all taste the same. Fernleaf, however, uses the best and freshest of quality real ingredients - butter, chocolate, fruit, cream, nuts, meats, cheese. They don't use imitations or processed fruit gels. There you will get flaky, crusty, fresh fruity, flavorfully sweet or savory pastries or sandwiches. And, if you have a birthday to celebrate on vacation, order one of their cakes. Seriously, I have never even found a bakery this good in all of Boston or Portland! Nana & Grampa love the blueberry/raspberry danish, 97-year-old Auntie gobbles down a huge cinnamon roll, cupcakes - yum, cousin - blueberry pie, daughter favors the plain croissant, littlest daughter gets the magic bar, husband - turkey & cheese croissant, sisters get the strawberry cake and the chocolate mousse cake for their August birthdays, and my favorite is the chocolate croissant! read more

Great pie. Only thing that kept them from a 5 was they had a sign up for slices of blueberry pie and when we ordered them it was oh we are sold out but I can sell you a whole pie. Not cool. Not my fault you didn't change your board. Ended up having to buy a whole pie. read more

Honestly, this is the cutest little bakery I've seen in New England so far. The pastries are sooo good. I reccomend the Carolyns highly- they're phenomenal! The only even remotely negative comment that I have is that the beverages are usually just a little too hot. They're fantastic once they've cooled a bit, though! I like blueberry tea, but I've been told that the chai tea is great here too. Overall, it's great and I would- and have- recommended it to friends. read more

All I can say is - WOW. I'd been meaning to order from here for quite some time and finally made an order for lunch. The pick-up process was simple and easy and the employees were very kind and friendly. We ordered the grilled turkey cheese sandwich and the cranberry chicken sandwich and we were so satisfied with both! The sandwiches were nice and warm and didn't even last 10 minutes before they were completely devoured. As for coffee and pastries, I ordered a mocha latte and a cinnamon roll. The coffee was absolutely excellent! I've ordered lattes from other places before and been disappointed with the taste but this one was spot on. As for the cinnamon roll, this was my FAVORITE thing we had ordered. It was the cinnamon roll you always crave and have in mind when ordering, but never seem to be able to find. I can't even describe how absolutely delicious this was. The second I took it out of the bag I noticed how warm it was and how yummy it looked! It just made me feel warm and happy inside. My partner doesn't eat sweets and he loved it. I would definitely go back for everything we ordered, but mostly that cinnamon roll because it was PHENOMENAL (I was unable to snap a photo because I was too excited to eat the pastry lol). read more

Decided to give this place a try while on a trip to the Kennebunks. The customer service was awesome, but unfortunately the almond croissant I had was not. Now the almond croissant wasn't horrible, but I've had way better. The croissant was a little too much on the doughy side and the almond paste was just on the ends of the pastry and nonexistent in the center. I however didn't try anything else they sell, so this could be just an isolated incident. Due to this experience, I don't think I will be returning. read more

I stopped in this morning for the first time. I read a few reviews and had to go in. It's a small place with a couple of tables for eating in. They had a good selection of items. I purchased a couple of magic bars to go and ate one this afternoon. OMG so good. I probably should have only eaten half, but I went for the whole thing. I also purchased some bread/butter pickles and picked beets for my dad. I'll deliver them tomorrow, but they look great. If I'm in the area again, I will be stopping in. read more

The man working was very rude, I had my son with me and ordered 4 dessert items only to have him say "wow, someone has an appetite". We were bringing the items home to share with others, I wasn't eating it all myself, what an ass! I believe the items are extremely overpriced, considering the quality - the cinnamon rolls are awful, very heavy and hard. Magic bar and whoppie pie I heard was okay, my husband said said the chocolate brownie sucked. Will not go there again. read more

The sandwich I had (pesto, mozzarella, tomato) was overpriced and the taste was mediocre. This is my favorite type of sandwich, and I was disappointed by Fernleaf's version of it. All the ingredients, including the side salad, seemed like the sort of fare I could get at the grocery store. (Bland tomato, bland pesto, soft roll) $7.50 was too much. This place never disappoints. I go as often as I can (I live in Boston) when I visit my daughter who lives in Saco. Their pastries are delicious, their quiche is fabulous and I had a roasted veggie sandwich there on Friday and it was so good I dreamt about it that night! It was DELICIOUS!!! It has a cute little display area for the pastries, calming music, incredible customer service, and a cozy dining area. The steamers are magical. This bakery deserves to be in a fairy tale.
