We are regular weekly patrons and have always enjoyed our experiences. Field and Fire's food is top notch and their employees have always been wonderful. Today, there was an admitted problem with our order. Immediately after placing our order, I waited at the coffee counter for my coffee and my wife's and daughter's water. The person assigned to the drink counter, who it turns out was the manager, asked if I had already placed my order. I assured him I had. The food runner poured a cup of coffee (not the kind I ordered) in a to-go cup (we were dining in) and slid it to me without comment. When I asked for cream and Splenda (I meant to say 'stevia'), she told me 'We don't serve that crap here!'. After I corrected myself, she slid three stevia packets at me and told me to 'be on my way'. I got the impression from that behavior that they thought I was a thief trying to scam them out of a cup of coffee. I joined my wife and daughter at the table and my wife had to stand in line again to get the water that we had ordered. We watched as the family in front of us in line was served their drinks and food while we were ignored for about thirty minutes. During this time, we confirmed that the transaction was pending with our bank. I took our order number (8) back to the counter and asked the woman who gave me the coffee about the status of our order. She told me that the order that she had just delivered was order number 7 and that we were next. I challenged her by pointing out that the family in front of us had been order 7 and she replied that they had issued two order '7's at the same time. When I asked if our order had been lost, she denied it and repeated that our food would be ready momentarily. Several minutes later, the manager approached and explained that he had refunded our order and admitted that it had indeed been lost and that our food order was being 'rushed'. We decided to leave and I explained to the manager that it was not because a mistake had been made, but because I had been treated like a scammer and that his employee had lied. He countered that they had not not lied, but had been working from 'a false set of assumptions'. When I asked him if they would ever issue two of the same order numbers at the same time, he said that was ridiculous. I agreed and pointed out that making up information to tell a customer lands on the lying side of 'a false set of assumptions'. Bottom line: Mistakes happen and we understand that. Compounding mistakes by making up false narratives and treating customers like they are trying to scam you are red flags that no amount of previously positive experience can ameliorate. This was a massively disappointing experience that makes us never want to go back. If you choose to go to Field and Fire Café, you are forewarned that you may be twice the victim of their mistakes. read more

They are amazing! Best pastries, coffee and food and friendly service. Ample precautions due to COVID. We visit them almost weekly and can't recommend a better bakery. If you're in this area, definitely drop by and try a breakfast item or some treats. read more

What a great place for lunch! I had the grill cheese with tomatoes and bacon. It was toasted perfectly and came with chips or salad. Service was fast and the place was very clean. I definitely recommend this place for a good lunch. read more

My husband, 3 kids, and I stopped in on a road trip to get some lunch. At first I didn't realize that there were tables that would accommodate all of us, but found a couple of 4-top tables near the restrooms (and also high chairs). The food was good. My ramen with pork belly was a bit too salty, particularly with the Nori, but the pork belly itself and noodles were delicious. I believe it was supposed to include an egg in the ramen as well, but they did not include it in my bowl. My daughter was unhappy because the "nut butter " sandwich on the menu was actually sunflower butter, which she does not care for. The other food, as well as my husband's Ethiopian coffee, was very good. read more

Ok so I have a perk that not everyone has, and that is that I live directly above Field & Fire. But regardless of that, this place is great. They have a full brunch and lunch menu which I have yet to try, but their food from the bakery (pastries, bread, etc) are fantastic. I picked up a Levain loaf and it's one of the best I've ever had. Their coffee is just as good. They have espresso and batch brew MadCap coffee for a very reasonable price. Their full menu looks great, so I'm excited to try that when I get a chance! read more

First time here, and based my visit purely on Yelp rating of 5* from many reviewers. Uhhhh..... well, here's my input. My wife ordered the "hot mess skillet" and I ordered the "vegan hot mess skillet". $9.50 and $13.00 respectively. Unfortunately we both were let down with the over - abundance of potatoes in the dish. I'm guessing like 75% of the dish was potatoes. So for price and taste it missed the mark for us. Both our lattes were decent though. We also ordered 2 cups of hot coffee to go and we both know Madcap coffee almost always tastes much better than what they served us. I really don't get they have 2 bathrooms, each with a unisex sign on door and then they feel the need to post a sign that bathrooms are "gender neutral". Well... They were clean. read more

I stopped by downtown before a yoga class. I had a cold brew, ceaser salad, and toast with seasonal jam. Was very filling and the salad was large! The associate offered me a free macaroon for my wait (which wasn't long at all). It was delicious, highly recommend! read more

My husband and I have been coming every Sunday practically since it opened. We love the location, the pleasantness of the decor, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Couldn't ask for more. The food is top-notch. You have to take home one of their Napoleons, or maybe several of them. It's a beautiful little place with a warm, friendly atmosphere and great to visit for not only a meal, but for a cup of coffee and pastry. I highly recommend it. read more

Field and Fire cafe was simply, awesome. The sleek, clean, European cafe atmosphere is refreshing and welcomed from the standard American diners and breakfast spots around Grand Rapids. I had a latte, breakfast plate of eggs, chorizo, potatoes, peppers, and it was fantastic. Not an overload of food with great flavor and presentation. Also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Shelby, who had me try a rhubarb pastry which tasted amazing as well. All in all, this place gets everything right when it comes to coffees, pastries, and a delicious breakfast without the awful waits of most places. Will definitely be back as much as I can. read more

I love the bakery at the Downtown Market and was excited to check out the new cafe. Nice atmosphere, great service and the food was great. I had the biscuit sandwich, the biscuit was soft, moist and buttery biscuit. Served with a nice side of greens with a lemony vinaigrette. Coffee was really good ( I think it's Madcap, which is another love of mine). Bakery case was limited but that may change as they get more established. Parking is easy on the street. This was our first time at this cafe, but we had to try it after loving their bread at Iron, and loving a dessert reception they catered. We only wanted a quick treat. We both loved what we had. I had a chocolate pear tart. It was perfect. I initially was disappointed that they didn't have a plain pear one, as I thought the chocolate would overwhelm the pear flavor. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it did not. The pear was the star, with what appeared to be a half a poached pear, that seemed to be poached in its own juice, on top of a sweet solid crust with a complex flavor, and a bit of something between a chocolate ganache and chocolate cream in between the pear and the crust. The flavors all supported each other for a delicious and complex whole. My husband liked his bran muffin as well. It was moist with a lovely complex flavor. It isn't super sweet, it just has a hint of sweetness and a lovely brown bread flavor. Our bread at Iron was also amazing, and left me wanting more, but as it was a business event, I didn't feel comfortable asking for more. The desserts at the reception were all amazing too. The filling in the macarons was amazing. The flavor of the chocolate one was intense, and I like chocolate when it isn't ruining my fruit. The one quibble I had was that the inside was so intense and delicious that it made it hard to appreciate how good the outside was. The passionfruit panna cotta was also delicious, and I especially liked the tart jelly on top. I wish that I hadn't been so full, I would have loved to have tried more of their creations. We will definitely come here the next time we are in Grand Rapids. read more

The newest location to satisfy your Field & Fire craving does not disappoint! Stopped in on a Saturday morning and was pleasantly surprised to find it was not packed! Several cafe breakfast dishes available as well as Madcap coffee but the real stars of the show are the brimming full pastry cases... beautiful laminated treats, finicky opera cakes, unusual creme brûlée (earl gray and honey) you really can't go wrong! They even have day old goodies at a discount, the next time you're cruisin Monroe and need something quick, skip the jimmy johns and check out these hardworkin locals! read more
