I was so expecting this place to be the best around after reading reviews. It was a disappointing meal for a friend's birthday dinner. Pork chop was over done with not much flavor. Normally I would give five stars. I love the place- the food, atmosphere, and the incredibly professional staff; however, last night it was 14 degrees and outdoor dining was open. Although this may be comfortable for customers, I imagine wait staff were unbearably cold to say the least. I am a Marshall resident. I own a farm and do not keep my horses out in freezing temperatures. As an employer, I respect my employees and would never expect them to work in these conditions. I realize the pandemic has been tough on restaurants specifically, but expecting workers to preform in frigid temperatures is a new kind of low. There are labor laws in this country and although Virginia is a right to work state it seems that as self admittedly socially conscious as the owners of Field and Main claim to be, they would show common courtesy to their staff and close outdoor dining during below freezing conditions regardless of what a backward state allows them to get away with. I will never dine at Field and Main again based on the treatment of employees. I have a wide reach and will encourage people with conscience to do the same. I will say the staff were welcoming, without complaint. They were courteous and prompt. I would not have been so polite in horrific conditions. Outdoor dining should really be closed during inclement weather. I am appalled and will send a contribution to the Local SEIU with comment. Field & Main is simply and elegantly headed towards being the best close-in DC destination restaurant. Located in Marshall Va, approximately 45 minutes from downtown DC, its an easy trip that is more than worth the experience and right off of Route 66. No windy country roads to navigate after a wonderful meal with wine or drinks. In large part, my review of Field and Main has to do with the place, the experience and what you can expect to find. We are inside the beltwayers who love venturing out to Va countryside restaurants, wineries, breweries, and towns. We've eaten at many places in the surrounding counties. Recently opened, the food, dining experience, atmosphere, and attitude of this place is perfect . Fantastic for a great night out, both as a couple or with a group of friends. Situated on the Main street in downtown Marshall, which has always been kinda quiet and not too much going on, Field and Main has transformed an old building into an understated, hip, and unique location. Its beautiful, authentic, with a vibrant and fresh feel. Its roomy inside, not big but sizable, they renovated the location keeping the best but making it what it needs to be. This place has plenty of charm and character, think Garden and Gun hits Marshall, if you know what that means. The clientele and vibe is not your typical uptight gentrified Va country inn/restaurant scene, which is a nice change and long overdue. There are no civil war generals on the wall nor dinner served in a moldy building with 4 entrees or some steep priced fixe menu. There is an upstairs bar, several airy sitting rooms you can relax in with a glass of wine or hang with friends, at least two great dining rooms plus the dining area open to the kitchen. And yes, they have 6 or 8 seats along the open kitchen for foodies to check out the action, which I always love. Fun... This place is lively with the right balance of effective service, polished attitude, and really good food with a substantial variety of dishes. Last comment before going on to food, the price points for dinner and everything I just mentioned are really reasonable, it feels like a special night out but not priced like one. You could go here a-lot, not just once in a while. We live in Alexandria and it's going to be on our go-to list often and for a long time. My wife and I went last night (Sept 4th, 2016) and our goal was to try as many things as possible so we concentrated on the "To Begin" section of the menu, we generally like a larger assortment of starters, then getting one main dish to share. Pause... no attitude at Field and Main in regards to this approach, nor any approach you may want to take (Refreshing). The service attitude here is professional and about the customer, its not about what the restaurant wants itsclientele to be like. In regards to food, it is very good, but many others will no doubt chime in later with crazy details and nits. Plus having previously worked in restaurants for years, many years ago, I never think it's fair to judge a place outright when they've been open for just a week. It takes time with a new staff and getting timing and execution right. That said, the place was humming out of the gate, and the food and service were both fantastic. We had the deviled eggs which I loved. The crispy pigs ear was really tasty and thank goodness it was not severed whole like the ones we give our dog, The preparation was thinly sliced, fried and topped with Crystal hot sauce and blue cheese, the slivered bed of celery it sat upon was a clever and delicious end to the dish. The sorghum berry risotto was good but a little heavy for my taste, my wife loved its nuttiness and I assume it would be 'to die for' with vegetarians. Seared Scallops - are you kidding me. I never like the phrase "the best I ever had", but the scallops/preparation are really damn good. I think they were broiled high as opposed to seared which to me translated to nicely browned, moist and not overcooked but done to perfection. The raviolo with braised pork, hickory and soft egg was interesting and very good as well. Love the sides, in particular the creamed corn pudding. We sat at the kitchen viewing seats and the other things we saw being plated looked awesome. Can't wait to go back - love this place in every way. The owners and staff have done a great job and its exciting to see cool restaurant trends exploding in other southern towns finally hit our region. Field and Main is a first and thank goodness. Field and Main will soon be, if it isn't already, the go to dining spot. Given the anticipation of what Neil and Star had envisioned, Field and Main is the fruition of all their hard work. Come early for a pre-dinner cocktail, you'll be happy you did. Meredith is terrific, skilled and a outright pro behind the bar. The bar sets a good tone for the evening and what one might expect at dinner service. There's a great selection of creative cocktails and the wine list is thoughtful and thoughtfully priced. No budget busters, exactly what I hoped to find from Neil. Now for dinner, we were a party of 8 which included a mature 6 year old and the seating was great. Let me tell you it's downright comfortable. We had the pig ear, which in my mind is a signature dish, do not pass on it. The sauce and the blue cheese just leaves you wanting more. The deviled eggs were crazy flavorful, a one bite dynamo. The tomato appetizer was equally impressive, we shared it easily among the adults. The biscuits and bacon butter were...well you get the idea it's bacon and butter. I'm copying that for my own at home. For entrees we ordered a few items: The whole fish was succulent and appropriately smokey from the fire. The beef roast was a real crowd pleaser, packed with flavor and so tender. The pork roast was equally as good. For sides, the mac and cheese is the best I've ever had plan and simple. When you have it you'll understand. The fried potatoes are a can't miss too. We look forward to our next visit to this gem. I believe what's happening at Field and Main will capture the attention of those not just inside/outside the beltway but the state. Wow - how this restaurant has grown!! My first visit, a year or so ago, was "just OK" but disappointing considering the cost (about $100 per person including drinks). But last night? Let the 5 stars say it all! From the moment we entered, everyone was friendly and welcoming despite being crazy busy. We were seated at a table for two and acknowledged by our server, Sonia. Shortly after, we were served a bit of delicious broth which I thought was a lovely touch... a non-alcoholic aperitif so to speak. Sonia was terrific throughout the evening. She knew every detail of how each entree was prepared and was able to help sort out some dietary issues. My husband started with a beautiful asparagus salad, I took a leap out of my comfort zone and had the crispy pig ears - both were awesome in flavor, presentation and portion. Our entrees followed - roasted whole rockfish with a tamari and olive oil glaze, roasted pork, wrapped with bacon, with an absolutely outrageous mole sauce! I wanted something simple as a side to the rockfish so the kitchen grilled some asparagus for me, finished off with a little salt and freshly ground pepper. My husband had the collard greens which were a perfect match to the porchetta. All in all, a notable dining experience, one we won't soon forget and will want to have again soon! read more

I don't normally write reviews, but I thought this restaurant was worthy of a few words. I honestly thought I had been teleported to another place upon entering Marshall, Virginia. The tiny town seemed to be bustling with people on a Saturday night at 9pm!!! It was a little odd considering it is a bit of a hike to get to Marshall (from anywhere). Our table was seated on the second floor, however upon snooping around I realized there was no bad seat in the house. The kitchen is absolutely beautiful-- still shiny with new pots and pans and bustling with highly skilled staff. No one seemed frazzled, just busy. My next time there I am definitely going to ask for seats in front of the kitchen. It was a perfectly timed show. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable of his menu and was able to give recommendations. My husband and I loved the risotto and my friend had the delicious pig's ear (which didn't look anything like a pig's ear...more like shreds of onion rings). Our main course was amazing too! My husband and I got the dinner for two which came with two sides. The sides were hard to choose from. We loved the greens and the corn pudding! Def. get the biscuits with bacon butter! I wanted to put the bacon butter on everything!!! Our friends got the Tbone which looked and tasted delicious. It was perfectly grilled which is even more impressive. Last but not least...the owner is so knowledgeable of wines you should go just to hear him describe what you are drinking! Came here for dinner and were seated right away. Ordered a couple of apps. Beet salad which was good and the buffalo pig ears which i thought was a little overpowered by the blue cheese. For entrees we ordered the steak and the grilled fish. My husband liked his steak and my fish had a nice flavor except it was pretty burnt on the side it was laying on which I didn't discover till much later. Maybe that was strategically placed? I didn't finish my fish because i felt full from the apps so I boxed it. When I tried to eat it next day that's when I noticed how burnt it was. I tried to eat it and it was so bitter from being burnt. All in all a decent experience. If I dine next time I'll be sure to check and try to finish so I'm not left surprised next day. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. The vibe was great and the building has been refurbished with a great, clean design which helped relax the entire mood while indulging in a gourmet meal. My menu choices: The scallops were perfectly seared and paired with a gazpacho. Roasted beets with pecans were delicious. Pork belly over grits was also a hit! I really could have eaten a full serving of the grits alone...so creamy!! As an entree I shared the beef roast which was also a hit. A nice twist with pho broth and crisp vegetables. My spouse and I visited Field and Main last weekend. I have been wanting to go since it opened so I was excited. We were led to the small upstairs dining room. There is a 4 top in the middle and four 2 tops surrounding it. Having the 4 top in the middle of this tiny room meant we heard nothing but their conversation. The chairs were comfy. I read the reviews ahead of time and knew I wanted the Crispy Pigs Ears and the potatoes but that was the extent of my research. I sensed we were in trouble when the only wines by the glass were Virginia wines. Virginia Wines are fine and that's about it. I had water. The Crispy Pigs Ear is a novelty and nothing more. They are a vehicle for Crystal hot sauce and blue cheese. Everything is a la cart, including the bread which can be purchased across the street, and I imagine I can get a loaf for $6.00 which is what we paid for a half loaf and bacon butter. I ordered the pork chop and my husband the rib eye. We got a pork chop and a steak on a plate. They were fine but terribly lonely. We had the side of crispy potatoes, also fine. When I go to a nice restaurant I expect to be dazzled. I expect for the chef to creatively pair a pork chop with something like a parsnip puree, something unexpected and delicious... something I would never think to make at home. There was nothing exceptional about the appetizers, side or the main courses. The dessert was a delight. Strawberry Semifreddo with rhubarb, strawberries and basil dust. It was the highlight of the meal. I made a simple lemon semifreddo the next day and that's what I want from fine dining, something that challenges me to give it a shot in my own kitchen so I can dazzle my own guests. read more

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars - if I could give it 3.5 I would. The restaurant itself is wonderful - the host was excellent and the owner seemed nice. The host even gave us a tour of the restaurant after we ate and went into historic detail about the house. The food was "ehh". I had high hopes since we have eaten at the Ashby Inn multiple times and love it. I think the biggest problem was that none of the food was HOT (with the exception of the sides). It all seemed like it had been "warmed up" and not really cooked. The pigs ears were very good, but just lukewarm as was my pork roast. The sides were excellent - probably my favorite part of the meal. We had the roasted sun chokes, cauliflower and mustard greens and roasted garlic potatoes - both very good. I think we will try it again in a few months - I know it just opened and we really want to like it! read more

I'm from D.C. but was in the area and decided to try Field & Main. I didn't have a reservation and the place was crowded but I got a seat at the marble bar overlooking the kitchen. It was one of the best seats in the house. I had the balsamic infused heirloom tomatoes with Feta. My seat mates and I had the same dish. We all loved it. On the plate, the tomatoes looked like enormous peaches. They had been blanched, stuffed with Feta, and infused with balsamic. It was very refreshing and delicious. I had pork belly next and it too was great. It tender and juicy and the sear on it was great. My seat mates had the pork loin chop and the steak, which were generously sized and got devoured. To end, I had an open-faced ice cream sandwich. It was a scoop of ice cream on a crunchy almond cookie topped with a compote of peaches and nectarines. My seat mates had apples and caramel sauce over pound cake. Not a morsel remained of either dessert. This restaurant is a gem. Worth the drive. read more

Field and Main was a wonderful culinary surprise for our weekend in the area! The service was exceptional and we felt so genuinely welcome. The food was absolutely perfect! We had the charred squash dish which was our favorite - even though we are not vegetarian. We had the half chicken as well and it was perfectly cooked and very tender. Portions are very generous, just like the service. We got a tour of the kitchen and the staff was very proud to talk about their dishes and coming methods. Went to Field and Main for the first time and it was fantastic. Let's start with the building - amazing atmosphere, love the look and feel. The food was delicious and lucky for us we were able to try many things: the beef, salmon, pork, and Buffalo pig ears(?!). For years I choked down vegetables yet there I was scarfing down Brussel sprouts that were amazing! Best part, the owners were there and couldn't have been nicer and more gracious. Innovative, delicate but not fussy dishes. Fantastic service, decor is stylish without being uncomfortable. Each of us in our party of four ate every bite of what we ordered. Date night! My significant other made us reservations for 6:30. We were greeted at the door and taken to our seats right away. The food was great but the service was even better. Our food came out extremely fast. We were seated upstairs and took a tour after. We told the host next time we'd like to sit by the kitchen and they made a note in their system. The whole vibe in the restaurant was great and we felt right at home. We will definitely return and hope to try "the feast" next time! We stopped in at gentle harvest across the street which is like a mini Whole Foods right in downtown Marshall! We were seated in the kitchen room which was fun. Drinks were a little expensive for what they were, but still good. However the food was phenomenal. We had deviled eggs, bread with bacon butter, and the roasted onion for apps, and they were all delicious. Roasted onion was a winner. If I could leave 10 stars I would! My husband surprised me with a lunch date last Sunday in one of the outdoor cabanas. First of all, we were greeted by a very kind and welcoming hostess. She took us out to one of the cabanas and it was so cute and perfect! We loved everything about it. The openness with the sliding doors, the nice warm propane heater, the cute and functional hand sanitizers- it was all done so well. Tony was our waiter and sommelier and he recommended the perfect sparkling wine for me and a great spicy cocktail for my husband (First Date). He was so knowledgable and excited to share information with us, I loved learning about the drinks. We both ordered a sandwich- I had the crab cake and he had the steak and cheese. The sandwiches were delicious and the side of potatoes was amazing, they were perfectly crispy with melted cheese. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch and never felt rushed to leave our little cabana. What a delightful experience..the food, wine, hosts, atmosphere, servers, kitchen staff, chef, sous chef and the owner, and learning the history of the house that was renovated into an awesome restaurant. Even the dishware, created by a local friend; and the owner brother made all the wood furniture and the most incredible wine rack..which is hidden away..was designed to detail..oh, those deviled eggs (not your grandma's deviled eggs) have their own wee dish to set upon. We were lucky to be able to sit at the kitchen counter and watch the food being prepared and beautifully presented. I hear the brunch is out of this world. Looking so forward to returning. read more

We were so looking forward to our anniversary dinner. We were very disappointed. Our waiter went from being all over us when we were looking at the menu to completely ignoring us. He seemed disappointed that we weren't ordering more and lost interest. Not the big ticket/tip he was looking for? My husbands pork chop was so tough he left most of it on his plate. I got the vegetarian entree. It was just okay. The side of potatoes were good. We sat there, obviously finished for so long. Many staff members walked by, looked at the finished plates, and kept going. Our waiter finally came back. We got the check and went elsewhere for dessert. We won't be going back. read more

I love this restaurant! Marshall is such a charming and quaint town, this restaurant just adds to it. I've been a few times, including for Thanksgiving dinner. The food is delicious... I recommend the pig's ear, the mac n cheese and while I am a meat lover, I love their acorn/squash dish. The desserts are yummy and I love their coffee and wine. So....I had high hopes for this place. We really like the setting and the town of Marshall. We did a full set of drinks, apps, dinner and desert. We were seated promptly, nice. They offered sparkling or tap water...we opted for sparkling which did not come till dinner, they kept forgetting even after reminding them numerous times. Mixed drinks were not great. Stick with wine, beer or standard spirits as the special drinks are not worth it. Deviled eggs not worth it, very bland. Best app was hearth roasted peppers or the hearth roasted beets, green salad again very bland. We got the ribeye and skirt steak dinners with sides of potatoes. Both meats were cooked great and tasted great. The ribeye thought is not worth the $65 price tag. Potatoes were good, not great. The brownie Sunday and ice creams were fantastic.....especially the brownie Sunday. For the overall price tag, service, food, and quantity of food .....it could have been better. read more

Delicious meal! Impromptu drive through Marshall brought us to Field & Main. Didn't have a reservation but were seated at the chef's bar overlooking the kitchen. Ordered the 1/2 chicken, pork roast and roasted vegetables along with Red Truck bread with bacon butter! Everything was perfectly cooked, juicy and delicious! Had a red wine from a local winery, Rendezvous (RDV) that was pretty good too. Hank, our server, provided impeccable service. Anthony, the Executive Chef, was amazing.
