Fieldwork is a place I've walked past several times near Peet's Coffee, but I never stopped in because I wasn't planning to sit and have a drink. I didn't realize they offer single cans to go, which is a great option--you don't have to commit to a six-pack. You can try individual beers, plus non-alcoholic drinks, and sodas. The staff was very friendly, and I ended up picking up five different cans to sample. Everything I tried was excellent. The beer stood out as especially fresh--you can immediately see it in the pour with a tall, foamy head. It made me realize how worthwhile it is to buy directly from a local brewery like this. The beer is brewed in Berkeley and feels noticeably fresher than what you often get from stores, where even a full six-pack can sometimes taste flat or stale. The lady with black hair working at the front was so rude. My girlfriend and I sat outside after getting a sandwich from a nearby shop. There was no signs saying we could not eat here. I went to order a drink from here but they did not have what i wanted so we sat back down and immediately the staff person gave us a dirty look. After a couple mins, she approached us and asked if we would like to order. Neither of us wanted anything and responded no thank you. She then said this is for paying customers of peets or here only you need to leave or order something. I said oh we can order from Peet's. We went to peet's and the staff there did not care nor did they care about the other people eating from outside places. I was in the mood for a beer flight, and Fieldwork Brewing popped up as a top spot so I stopped by, and I'm glad I did. The space is very attractive, with a gorgeous fire pit and a welcoming vibe. It's convenient to order from your table using the QR code system, which I appreciated (you can even pay from your table so it was an introverts dream). That said, I was a bit disappointed by the slow service, especially considering the place wasn't very busy at the time. It wasn't a dealbreaker, but it was noticeable. The beer flight was excellent overall, with great variety and solid flavors. I'm a fan of IPAs, but one of the ones I tried didn't hit the mark for me still, the rest of the lineup made up for it. If I'd had more time, I would've happily sampled more. I'll definitely return next time I'm in Monterey this place is worth another visit. Or three. read more

Staff here are really rude. My wife and I sat outside after grabbing a bowl from chipotle. It was 11am the patio doors were open. We did not see a sign saying we could not eat here. We sat down and immediately the staff person approached us and asked if we would like to order. Neither of us drink and responded kindly saying no thank you we don't drink. She then said well this is not open to the Publix you either need to leave or order something. I said oh I didn't know we will order something from Peet's then. We've been to this Fieldwork taproom a few times and always have a good experience. Of course, with this being entirely outdoors, this is a weather permitting location (not sure if they close when it rains, just up to you if you wanna sit in the rain lol). The beer of course is always fantastic. Not a bad thing on draft; even tried their hop water this time around and even that was good. Service is always friendly. We happened to be there during an event so it was super crowded, but the bartenders did a great job moving the ling along quickly and people around me in line were friendly, striking up conversations. I really like the outdoor laid back vibe of this location. They have big picnic tables, small tables, and adirondack chairs around a fire pit. This is both dog & child friendly. There are 2 gender neutral restrooms onsite. No food on site, but you're welcome to bring outside food in to enjoy. Definitely check them out when you're in town. While on my honeymoon trip in California, we had to hit up some breweries. In Monterrey, we grabbed food and drinks at Alvarado and started walking back to our hotel since it was getting late. Then we see out of the corner of our eyes a place that looks like it might be a brewery. We walk closer and see some beautiful fire pits in a patio that definitely looks like a beer garden. Sure enough, there is a bar in their with some beer bottles and tap handles. Turns out it was Fieldworks. We had to get a flight of beer to try them out straight from the source! Rainbow Parfait: A Sour build on a base of Pilsner Malt, Flaked Oats, and Milk Sugar. Then it was conditioned on Vanilla, Raspberry, Limes, and Orange to taste just like melted rainbow sherbert. Fest & Last: A Festbier style Oktoberfest lager made with German Malts, their house German Lager Yeast, and German Noble Hops. All the best ingredients used to make a beer that will have you yelling ein prosit. Crowded Lonely Night: A Belgian Dark Strong Ale brewed with Barley, Hops, and Belgian Candi Sugars. A beautiful representation of the style with flavors of molasses, toffee, and caramel with some bitterness to prevent it from being cloying. Supreme Diesel: A Double IPA with lots of Nelson. I get notes of Sauvignon Blanc Grape, guava, and a fusel floral aroma. Summertime Smile Factory: A West Coast style Double IPA double dry hopped with Riwaka, Krush (HBC586), and Mosaic Dynaboost. My husband is a craft brew snob and Fieldwork is his absolute favorite brewery in CA. We have been on a slow mission to visit each location so during a day trip to Monterey, this was a must. This is a small location, outdoor only, with first come/first serve seating. They don't sell any food the way other locations do, but right next door are a Peet's, Chipotle, Ike's sandwiches, & Trader Joes. We only came for beer and had dinner after this at Alvarado Street Brewery which is a short walk from here. Fieldwork always has fresh tasting beers that are fragrant and unique. Their menu is always balanced with something for everyone. I couldn't drink this time, but he ordered a pre fixed flight for $15 and was extremely happy. The beer counter reminded me of being at the county fair, except they didn't have funnel cake. Fieldwork put absolutely no effort into this location. An okay review for an okay brewery. This was the "okayest" brewery I've ever been to. The beer was okay. It was fine, not bad but nothing special. The pours were generous. The Belgians and IPAs were good. There were a lot of IPAs but the menu didn't specify style so when ordering we didn't really know what to expect. We ordered a flight and all the beers were okay. The beer garden was okay. Lots of picknic tables on a slab of concrete. Nothing really "garden" about it. It was fairly plan but quite crowded. It was okay, but nothing special. The sign at the entrance was the coolest part about it. The location was okay, it was near downtown but not quite there. So sorta convenient. The beers were poured in a converted storage container. The bathrooms were also located in a storage container. The bathrooms were kinda clean not gross but not clean. The prices were good and the pours were generous. Overall everything was just okay. Not somewhere I'd visit again as an out of towner but we didn't have a bad experience. read more

I love Fieldwork, if you read my posts and or follow my beer activity, I love beer. And I still do! I have been to every location for Fieldwork and am looking forward to visiting the San Leandro site. The only gripe I have with the Monterey location is the cleanliness of this spot. The tables are rountinely dirty and yikes, a mess. I understand they share the spot with Peets coffee next door and people bring in food but yikes. This last visit was gross. The table we started at had clearly had not been wiped down as a tuff of dog hair was sticking to the top. The concrete could use a spray down too. I am still giving four stars because, well, duh!, the beer. The quality of beer ALWAYS exceeds and delights! And overall the vibe is super cool and music is fun. I won't stop coming here, but I might start carrying some portable Lysol wipes to clean my table. Cheers and happy drinking. read more
