I recently visited Fife Bakery to try their Hot Chocolate Festival offering (surprisingly my first year trying anything from the festival). The space was small but quaint and I loved the corgi themed decor. Small bakery with great coffee and a solid selection of pastries, pies, and loaves. Service is friendly. There can be a little wait if there are some coffee orders ahead of you, but things move relatively quickly. It's a small place with only a few seats inside, so more of a grab-and-go than a place to linger and soak up the atmosphere. The Country Loaf and the Sourdough are excellent. The sausage rolls here are the best I've found in Vancouver and the closest to what I miss from the UK. Made with Two Rivers pork they are a real treat. The croissants are good with just the right balance of buttery, light, and flaky. Same goes for the choclatine and almond versions. Been a couple of times now and I think I'll always try to pop in when I'm passing by, just in case there's a sausage roll available. read more

A nice local bakery around the neighbourhoods, Fife bakes the most amazing sourdough in town. I liked mine pre-sliced, which you can pre-order a day in advance from their website. You can't really go wrong with and of the options but my favourite is the simple country loaf ($8). Occasionally, I also got coffee or matcha (from the amazing paragon tea room), and they are always consistently good. Also tried a few of their other pastry offerings: sausage roll ($5.75 closest to Australia's version I could find here) and canele ($3.75 good but a little bit too burnt). read more

Small and out-of-the-way bakery and coffee shop. They don't open until 9 which is usually too late for me to come by in the morning, but I recently had the chance to grab a morning snack here. I got a berry muffin and a hojicha milk tea. The muffin was really good; it tasted like it might have been made with cornmeal which gave it a unique and pleasant texture and rounded flavour. Lots of juicy berries inside. The hojicha was very high quality and strong. The shop is very small, only 4 stools set up inside, and a picnic table outside for when the weather is nice. The corgi theme is cute. Staff were very nice. In addition to baked goods (whole loaves of bread as well as individual-sized items) and drinks, they have a few sandwiches available. Served with a yuzu poppyseed muffin. This one was amazing! The matcha hot chocolate and yuzu syrup matched in a perfect way! The first sip had a strong yuzu flavor, and the matcha flavor came later. I wish they would offer this drink on their permanent menu. #76 - SUNSET WOODFIELDS Available: January 29 - February 13, 2024 Roasty Shizuoka hojicha with Cacao Barry Inaya chocolate, finished with candied orange marmalade syrup. Served with an orange poppyseed muffin. I was very surprised by this ingredient combination - Houjicha and orange marmalade. Surprisingly, they matched well. However, I prefer less orange marmalade since Houjicha itself has a strong flavor. I feel like there are so many things going on in this one drink. When I tell you that my husband and I are absolutely feral for their porridge loaf, I'm not even remotely exaggerating. We tried their bread during our dinner at Botanist and decided we absolutely needed to grab a loaf before we left town. We swung by on a Saturday right around 11 am and were initially wondering if they even had any porridge loaves left since the shelf was empty. However, they let us know that they were currently making more and we could get some if we were able to wait a couple minutes! YAYAY. The porridge loaf was described as an oatmeal sourdough during our dinner and it just had the best crust with the crunchy little bits in the middle from oatmeal and grains. I'm so so glad they were able to get a loaf before we left! We also tried the choclatine which was solid. Next time, I hope to taste more of their bakes good and will most likely eat my way through their other loaves if I'm being completely honest. The location itself is pretty small but very cute; service was incredibly friendly and we appreciated their flexibility in getting us some much needed bread. Prices are certainly fair for what you get and I'm once again going to say PLEASE GET THIS BREAD IF YOU CAN. Fife Country Bread is something I've been dreaming of, it is one of the best loaves Ive had in Vancouver. Must order! They do half loaves. It was so good, I ate that bread naked when I had an array of condiments and meats, cheese, spreads all laid out. It was delicious the 8 hours I had it from hour one to hour 8 toasted. I did a Chocolate chip cookie battle that day. Fife vs Flourist. Flourist won. This apple pie was scrumptious. A classic apple pie done extremely well. From the tender and flaky rich dough, offset by the sweet and tart moist apple slices and the aromatic hint of spices, it was a wonderfully made dessert. I had the pleasure of encountering this cozy bakery a month after it opened in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood in 2016 and I have continued to be a return customer since then. Fife Bakery prides themselves for locally sourcing ingredients, as they always strive for quality and perfection in the nutritious baked goods and coffee they sell. The amazing one of a kind positivity that the owner Felix, and his staff embody is something that all establishments should possess. The knowledge that he has on creating food is beyond his years. He treats every customer with respect and answers each of their questions in detail, taking into account their personal preferences and expectations. Seeing that restaurants, small scale bakeries and grocery stores in the surrounding regions of Vancouver stock Felix's naturally-levained sourdough reflects on just how amazing these hand-crafted, organic loaves are. So, if you ever find yourself there on a day where Fife has sold out for the day and Felix can't magically find one for you, then visit Fife's website for a list of stockists they supply with bread on a weekly basis. You can also call ahead to Fife on most days to reserve a loaf for pick-up to avoid being disappointed and they will gladly hold it for you. Most times, I excitedly run home hugging a hot loaf if I haven't already devoured half the loaf at the bakery. My favourites at Fife besides the country loaf are the Sausage Roll, Gumpy's Canelé and the Salted Chocolate Chip Cookie. Each of these are guaranteed to leave you wanting more to take home or back to the office and share with people. In addition, I'm also pleased to see that Fife also offers a scrumptious Grilled Cheese Sandwich on Saturday, paired with tomato jam on two slices of their signature sourdough country loaf. During the current COVID situation, Felix and his team have bravely continued to push on and keep the locals of the Olympic Village/Mount Pleasant neighborhood well fed. They have modified Fife's menu to include family-sized meals in 1 Litre servings, in order to ease the worries of people who may have trouble accessing groceries or depend on food establishments to feed themselves in normal times. New menu items available for pickup include meatballs, vegetable stew, four different types of chowder soups and a family size apple pie. Visited for the Hot Chocolate Festival and it definitely did not disappoint. Truthfully, I only went because I wanted the adorable corgi cups and I didn't even look into what their hot chocolate was. I was very pleasantly surprised with the first taste of the fruity mango mixed with rich dark chocolate. It was absolutely delicious! I never would've thought mango goes well with chocolate, but now I know! I also ordered a latte. Even though Moving Coffee is gone now, the coffee quality has not diminished at all. This was probably my first experience ever where I had to choose the coffee for my latte. Honestly I was a little bit thrown off, but it truly emphasizes how serious they are about their coffee. We had the bread from Fife at the restaurant the botanist and kept asking for more and more bread. It was so delicious! So after our experience we had to check out the bakery. Their baked goods were pretty good but did not blow me away like the bread. We also had their drip coffee, and I'm not sure if it was too strong or something, but it tasted pretty terrible in my opinion (very acidic). I've been seeing this bakery around Instagram and wanted to come because their cups are so darn cute! Opened in late 2016, the bakery is named after the Canadian wheat variety red fife. The bakery itself is small, and only one customer or same small group is allowed inside with COVID regulations. Once you put in your order and pay, you wait outside and the staff bring you your order. It was our first time here, so we didn't know what to expect. There were 4 staff members working and talking amongst themselves so no greeting. I had to awkwardly interrupt them to ask what they recommended. One of them kindly explained their most popular drinks. We got the milkspro, which is essentially like a flat white, and their hojicha milk tea. All of their milk-based beverages are originally made with organic whole milk, but we subbed with oat milk for an additional price (lactose intolerant problems). By the time we came around, they didn't have any bread or much pastries around. We ended up sharing their chocolate chip cookie with sea salt and 65% dark chocolate. I found it too sweet on its own, but addictive when paired with their milkspro. So-so service, good drinks, cute packaging. A solid 4! read more

A latte from Moving Coffee (same location), a slice of their fresh baked fruit and nut bread and a coffee bun made for an heavenly breakfast. The birdfeeder bread was one of the best fruit and nut bread I've ever eaten. The only thing missing was butter and jam, not that it needed it. We LOVE the bread from Fife--both the country and the porridge loaves are excellent ... when we can get them. This is a small bakery amidst Mt. Pleasant's industrial area. Definitely an excellent addition to the neighborhood. ...but the past two times I've been, there has been no bread available. On one occasion we were told loaves wouldn't be ready for another hour and on another occasion it was "only" going to be a 20 minute wait. I'd love to go, just once, and be able to walk in, order a loaf--or half loaf, which they kindly offer--and pay and leave. Now, both times I've gone it was Saturday morning, so I've learned my lesson to go at some other time. But, having worked in a bakery in my younger years I know bakers often have to wake up hours before their doors open so that sufficient quantity is available for customers. It would be great if Fife bakery had product available in the hour after they opened. (I can only imagine that estimating how much product to make can be difficult, but to not have any 30mins after opening for the day is bad for customers. Nelson in Gastown only makes a particular quantity for the day and once that's sold out, customers are out of luck. We're now "trained" to go early or to forget it. And, actually, when loaves aren't available at Fife we head over to Nelson the Seagull). Bottom line--Fife makes excellent bread that we hope we can see more of! read more

Fife Bakery is a new addition to the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood that specializes in rustic old-school bread using traditional baking techniques. This is a bread lovers paradise! The loafs have a moist, fluffy, airy inside with a crispy crust. Felix Yau is the 22 year old owner and baker behind Fife. He baked his first loaf in a tiny toaster at the age of 9. Currently the space is shared with Moving Coffee, a local roaster and barista. The bakery is open for business Tues-Saturday while the coffee shop is open Tues-Sunday. On Sundays, the baked goods are from Moving Coffee. The name Fife comes from a wheat type called Red Fife which is the first large scale wheat harvested in Canada. It's a simple name and shows he put thought about his bakery name. The bakery's mission is to create delicious bread from local and sustainable ingredients. - 95% of ingredients are from local sources in the lower mainland - Remaining 5% of ingredients come from other Canadian sources - All packaging is 100% Canadian, recyclable and compostable - 97% of ingredients are organic or produced through organic methods - Counter tops are recycled floor tiles from a family owned bowling alley in New Westminster that was open for a few decades The old school style bread is a naturally leavened bread, meaning it's fermented dough allowing the culture to develop with the yeast and bacteria. The bread takes three days to make from start to finish. Since Felix sources local ingredients, don't be surprised the types of offering change by the season. The coffee beans offered also changes seasonally with exclusive small batch beans may come in for a week. The retail interior for customers is a small. When entering you'll see the counter of bread to the left and ovens, a tight hallway in the middle and 4 seats with counter space along the right. There is also 2 seats near the cash which don't have any table space but it's fine if you're sitting with a friend to chat while enjoying a coffee. There's also a washroom in the back! In the back is a massive industrial space. I believe the side the customer sees is just a small part of the business. Felix will most likely be expanding baking production to sell his delicious bread to restaurants, and local grocery markets if he hasn't already. The loafs are baked every hour, and usually sell out that hour too! If your timing may is bad you may need to wait a bit till the next batch is ready. Have a coffee, or cookie while you wait! Note: Slicing the bread isn't offered by default. Luckily we have a bread cutting knife at home. I usually ask him to cut a couple slices from my loaf to nibble on while enjoying my coffee. OVERALL IMPRESSION OF FIFE BAKERY: Fife Bakery is any bread lovers dream. Felix will never compromise quality for the sake of time or turning a profit. He is also one of the friendly people I've met! You can feel the passion if you stick around to chat with him. He is paired with a local coffee master Edmond from Moving Coffee who is equally as passionate about his craft. He roasts and prepares all coffee drinks himself. I think the two businesses are a perfect pair for each other. Bread and coffee just go so well together. I stopped by Fife before heading back to Seattle to try their porridge bread, sausage roll, and chocolate chip cookie. Everything was so good! I shared the sausage roll with my friend and we ended up fighting over who should get the last bite. I also brought the porridge bread back to share with my family and my mom loved it so much that she plans on stopping by this bakery when she drives up to Vancouver for Chinese New Years. read more

I really like where this business have carved out a small place in a cool spot. I'm not a coffee drinker so I'm 100% judging based on the baked goods. Their choco chip cookie is top notch but given they focus on a few things (which I like), I expected more of the bread. They clearly take great care to craft a core bread for variants but what I bought just didn't seem all that special for a boutique bread place and price. I do feel that this might have just been the type I selected and might try again if I happen to be there (and I can remember which loaf I got the first time!). Fantastic little bakery tucked away and hidden away. You can't see this unless you know know about this. On top of that it is a small little coffee place too. If you are not into proper coffee then don't complain. Educate yourself and learn, it is not hard. Anyways, I mainly come here for the sourdough bread. Living for the little bird feeder, if you are into special bread loaded with delicious little treats. And they make their bread fresh daily, and by the one and only Felix and Kieran. Both amazing new artisan bakers that are growing up to become amazing people. (There is totally no bias there). Their sourdough can be the life of the party, as I have brought them to many and just be eaten on their own with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
