Tiny little bakery selling loaves, cookies and coffee when I visited. A colleague told me about this place and highly recommended the bread - I'm a sucker for gluten so of course the next time I needed a bread for a dinner party, I dropped by later in the afternoon. There were people filling up the place just chatting (there are only about 2-3 seats) and two people behind the counter. The selection was pretty limited since there was less than an hour before they closed, but form the porridge bread, sourdough, olive and birdfeeder (seeds with cranberry), I opted for the birdfeeder. Samples quickly at home before guests arrived and paired with a salty aged Manchego, then with some cream cheese. Thumbs up! Would try this loaf again, as well as grab one of the cookies that were on sale...something tells me there's some brown butter goodness happening in those cookies. Loses one star as the cashier handled my food with bare hands (in between handling the register), and also as the POS machine adds in tip, even though you press "ok" to get through the "percent or amount" prompts. Yes, my bad, but I'd leave no tip if I could since I was buying bread for home. read more

Very nice bakery with cannelé made just like in Bordeaux. Good coffee, beautiful tasty pastries.

Cookie was made with rancid shortening or lard. It smelled and tasted awful (took only a small bite). I immediately walked back to the store and had him smell it, to which he replied, "It smells like how a cookie should smell". He refused to issue me a refund and offered to exchange it for another rancid cookie from the same smelly batch. I walked out of there, trashed the cookie, and proceeded to write my reviews. How did the owner handle this? By spreading lies and dispatching his friends and relatives who trolled my facebook review, forcing me to take it down and proceed to post on here and on google. Shows you what an arrogant and pompous individual he is. Also, the coffee was below average, and he dictated what I should order. He did not even give me a chance to ask about the other options. Also, I came several times during their work hours and the place was always closed. I should have taken this as a sign from God to steer clear of this place. If you want a great coffee experience, please go to Quantum or Revolver. If you want amazing bread, go to Terra Breads, which is literally minutes away from this nasty place. read more

I was in Vancouver for a day and had the pleasure of visiting this small bakery. The bread here smelled very fresh and is baked in-house every morning. I got the sourdough fresh out of the oven, fruit bread, and coffee. My friends and I loved how crunchy the exterior of the bread was while the inside was fluffy and chewy. I would recommend stopping by this bakery for coffee, pastries, or bread before exploring the rest of Vancouver. The owner Felix is an awesome guy too. read more

The hype is real. Brand new bakery (opened last week) in the mt. pleasant area and does it live up to bready expectations. Felix opened this bakery after working in the restaurant industry for a few years and his been baking since he was a kid! Imagine opening something and selling one thing: country bread. Week to begins (this week) with the multigrain (grainy goodness) and baguette. The bread is pretty much perfect. The crust is super crunchy, with that nice flour texture hitting your palette first followed by that moist inside. I threw some melted cheese on top after toasting it and ate both loaves. Cute little bakery and so cozy with tiny boards hanging out from the wall for tables. We had the olive sour dough bread and sausage rolls and both were yummy. The sausage rolls were such a hit that my cohorts came back to the bakery after sampling mine and got more rolls to go. The owner is Felix who's a sweetheart and so friendly. read more

Delicious stuffs they bake in this store, sourdough-breads, croissants, etc...but their store opening time is a bit late for bakery (9am weekdays, 11am on Sunday). And croissant is not ready until noon...seriously !? Usually people want fresh croissants in the morning. Our $8 loaf of bread is hopefully going to be good, based on reviews here. However, I was utterly turned off when they declined to serve me a coffee the way I wanted. I requested an Americano, to which they replied "we don't make Americanos here, this is what we do make." I then asked for an espresso to go with a bit of hot water poured on top, and THE SERVER SAID NO. Excuse me? You are declining to serve your customer what they requested? Sorry, see ya later. Will NOT be back. UPDATE: The bread is definitively NOT worth $8. My partner (who is NOT a baker) bakes bread, and this does not compare. Fife bread is pretty good. The challenge? Getting the bread in the first place. We tried to get Fife on a Saturday three times. The first two attemps were unsuccessful, fuelling our ambition to try this much lauded loaf. Well, the third time was a charm...sort of. Fife opens at 9am, so we went in at 9:30. We knew we were sure to get a fresh loaf at that hour! Not so fast. The bread wasn't even ready! Not a single loaf had come out of the oven! We had to wait another half hour for the bread to finish baking. What kind of bakery opens at 9 and doesn't have bread ready until 10am on a Saturday? No wonder there's a supply and demand issue. Although fresh, warm, steaming bread is hard to beat, on a taste level the bread is not better than Terra which is available everywhere, all the time. We couldn't help but make that comparison, especially after the mythical feats we had to complete to attain these loaves. To us, it just wasn't worth it. read more

Encountered this tiny storefront while I was walking a new route. I popped in and couldn't help buying a loaf of bread for my toast-tomato-mayo dinner. I picked the plainest loaf, and while it seemed expensive at $8, it looked too good to pass up. (It also helped keep my focus off the brioche coffee buns and cookies!) Needless to say my dinner was a huge success and even my non-bread-loving girlfriend thought it had the perfect combination of textures and demanded seconds. That was before I knew they use locally grown wheat and flours, which explains the you-get-what-you-pay-for quality (and who says you can't buy love?). This bakery is absolutely delicious. Their bird feeder loaf and olive loaf are my favourites. However twice when having the olive loaf I bit down on a hard olive pit (not very enjoyable!). I also wonder if on Mondays their bread is 'day-old' when it is served at Cafe La Tana? Which just makes it less delicious than usual. read more

After trying about 4 bakeries in the area, I finally discovered Fife. After 1 bite of their bread I was hooked. It's certainly the best bread in the area. The texture is just perfect. Sometimes you get a bread that's too crunchy or too soft or two chewy. This bread is perfectly balanced and what good bread is supposed to taste like. Im sure their bread and coffee and pastries are great, but I went in for an americano (espresso with hot water) and they said "no". They also don't allow you to put cream in your coffee. The coffees are the same price as any other shop, and when I asked to get espresso with a side of hot water to-go (as a compromise), they still said "no". When I asked why it was trouble to give me espresso with hot water they said "the water will taint the coffee and the experience. The coffee is Edmund's art." Should I, the customer, be the one who's experience is important? Not Edmund's idea of what my coffee experience should be. I asked to talk to this 'Edmund' but the barista went to the back and came back repeating the same message, as Edmund was 'too busy' to come explain. A coffee is a coffee. It shouldn't be complicated. This is just an incredibly pretentious and customer-alienating experience. read more

Working in the area I like to try the local eateries. It smells great in the shop but that is the best thing about it. My coworker and I tried the Mont Blanc Bun not know what it was and glad I've tried it so I know it's nothing special. I had Decaf but was only offered a latte as they do not do Americanos and my coworker go an espresso. If you enjoy some sugar in your coffee this is not the place for you as they do not have sugar available. It seems a bit snooty for me and will continue to go a block away to Swiss Bakery...at least they have sugar. read more

I hate having to give this place an overall rating. If I could separate food and service it would go something like this: baked goods: 5 stars, service: -1 MILLION stars. Yes, it's true that you will be bullied into drinking coffee the way they (or excuse me, "the coffee farmers", who are apparently more like caffeine dictators) want you to, regardless of whatever your plebeian tastes dictate. It's also true that you will not be greeted or smiled at. If you enjoy the idea of the Soup Nazi's pretentious hipster cousin, then you will be quite happy indeed. However, it is also true that you might shed a tear when you taste how ridiculously amazing the bread is. You will try to think of a better loaf so you don't have to go back there ever again, but you probably won't be able to. It's good enough to bring you back even if it makes you hate yourself a little. In summary, Fife Bakery is one of the great moral dilemmas of our time. Sigh. read more

Visited mid-morning on a mid-week day. Staff stared at me blankly without so much as a how do you do. Got the feeling I was not welcome. Chose my bread. And this bugged me. When paying with debit, the machine did not ask me if I wanted to tip, it just went directly to the tip screen for me to choose the percentage I was going to tip. In order to choose no tip, I had to press a button for more options and then choose zero. No effort in service then assume there will be a tip is not a good way encourage people to return. I absolutely love the country loaf, baked fresh daily as it's still warm when I've purchased them, and the fresh baked cookies are SO GOOD! Amazing cute shop. I was not fortunate enough to try the bread because I came late. Missed that last half loaf by a split second with another customer ahead. The pour over coffee was good! I tried two varieties and liked them both. If you are here for cheap bread or milk with coffee, better off going somewhere else. I am a regular customer of FIFE and enjoy their plain sourdough, fruit and olive breads. The only unfortunate experience is that I found an olive pit in the olive bread that I purchased today/Saturday Sept 09 which could've resulted in broken teeth but luckily did not.
