I came to fig 19 for a regular Saturday night outing. My friend and I sat at the front end of the bar where the entrance is (with seats, not standing) and we were literally not served for over 30 minutes. We flagged down the bartender numerous times, but the bartender didn't even glance at us. Meanwhile, the barback said he didn't make drinks when we asked for assistance. A few minutes later, he was serving drinks to another party. The last bartender rudely commented, "you're giving me $2 when I made you three drinks," a testament to the horrible service at the bar. In terms of drink quality, the cocktails are great. But the service at this speakeasy is simply unacceptable making the novelty of such a location insubstantial. read more

Holy crap, they really need to regulate the amount of people coming in and out. It gets PACKED, I mean sardine packed, at night. It's not even 11pm and you can barely move. It also takes forever to get a drink because everyone is trying to get to the bar. There are only two bartenders, so be prepared to wave your credit card around like a mad man to get his/her attention. The drink prices aren't that bad (a moscow mule was $10), but the consistency of the drink is all over the place. Sometimes they make it spot on, sometimes they make it way too strong and it ends up tasting disgusting. I'm talking same night, same bartender. Idk if they're just very overwhelmed, but something needs to change. Also there's this wooden fireplace in the room with candles in the fireplace. They're just chillin' on the floor with no barrier around them. Someone could easy fall and accidentally knock over the candles with their feet and the whole place would light on fire in minutes. Serious fire hazard. Honestly, it's overrated. It is cool that it's hidden in an art gallery, but I've seen better hidden places before (there was one that you needed to go into a telephone booth inside an actual restaurant to get to it). Fig 19 is a solid entry into the speakeasy/mixology scene of New York. On top of being hidden in the back of an art gallery, it's located on a rather bland stretch of Chrystie Street, where there's really not much else happening. It's easy to walk right by Fig 19 and miss it, especially if the bouncer isn't outside. The interior is very cool and chic, with crystal chandeliers, leather couches, lots of candles illuminating fireplaces... plus, in what appears to be a slight nod to Please Don't Tell, some taxidermy. I've been here twice and the first time is better known as "Crashing Billy's Birthday." I'm not even really sure how I got in. One of my friends and I had just left Cienfuegos and I suggested coming here. We walked up and approached the bouncer, letting him know we were here for Fig 19. He asked if we were with the party and foolishly, we said no. The bouncer's reply to that? "Ok, well go on in and have fun. Grab a cupcake or two." Once inside, we didn't pretend to be friends with the birthday boy. Whenever anyone who asked us if we knew Billy, we freely admitted to not knowing him and being party crashers, since the bouncer did let us in. Everyone was really cool and didn't request that we leave. Anyways, what brought me here was the drinks - not crashing Billy's birthday and eating his cupcakes, of which I had none of. I approached the bar and asked to see a cocktail list, but the bartender said their prosecco, which they have on tap, was included as part of the event. Prosecco on tap? That's pretty cool. I'm not sure I know of any other places that have it on tap. So, we just drank some of that and left shortly after, with the true concoctions of Fig 19 eluding me. I finally made it back a few weeks ago on a weeknight. I showed up around 8:15 or 8:30. I went up to the bouncer, let him know I was there for Fig 19 and he let me in, no problem. He even took me back to the entrance and saw me into the bar. Once inside, it was still early, so there were maybe two or three other people in there beside me. I took a seat at the bar and met Brandon, the bartender who is also a really friendly and welcoming guy. After I had some time to look at the menu, I told him I was between two drinks and perhaps he could weigh in. One drink I liked because it had lavender syrup, which he noted would be a little sweeter, while the other I liked because it had vanilla bean and cinnamon infused gin. Brandon even let me taste the lavender syrup and infused gin to help me decide. In the end, I went with the Vanishing Point, which was made of Vanilla Bean and Cinnamon Infused Gin, Fresh Lemon Juice, Agave, Egg White and Sea Salt. All of those ingredients mixed together made quite a yummy and smooth drink. Kudos to Brandon for his help. While we were chatting, I asked Brandon if the bartenders are the ones who create the drinks. He actually said no, that they have a mixologist who creates everything and then teaches the staff how to properly mix everything up. As I was on my way out, I asked Brandon if they were still doing the thing with the card. He said they were and actually gave me one. They just asked that I put my name and email down in the guestbook. He said if Fig 19 is busy, the bouncers will be a bit more lenient to those who have the card. I have nothing negative to say about this place. Just watch out for photos - they're not allowed. One other item of note - drinks have slightly gone up in price, from $12 to $13, which is still on the cheaper side for NYC mixology. Definitely check out Fig 19. read more

I'm surprised this place doesn't have three times as many reviews. Visiting this place, I felt like I was on an episode of The City (throwback to B grade MTV reality TV circa 2007, major points if you've seen it). Maybe the reason this place isn't super popular yet is because the entrance is kind of strange. You come up to the building, which is right next to a bunch of really popular/posh lounges that are totally packed. You walk in, and you're in an art gallery. Huh? What is going on? My friends didn't tell me we were going to an art show? Walk about 30 feet down the (gorgeous) gallery theres a unmarked white door at the end. Ta-da! You're in. I was super impressed with the decor. Forget the exquisitely talented mixologists - this place was accessorized to a T. The couches, art work, gorgeous chandeliers and dim lighting. I was very impressed.. So impressed I forgot to take photos (I'm kicking myself). We got there right when we opened, so we were able to snag the ONLY booth area in the lounge! It just keeps getting better, huh?! We all ordered a bunch of different drinks, but I stuck to my guns and ordered a cocktail that was "infused with rose oils". How chic is that? I couldn't resist. It's served with a single rose petal in the drink. First taste, I'm in heaven. I literally made my friends put down their drinks and try mine - they were so upset they didn't order mine. For $14 a cocktail, it's pricey to make a wrong decision. But, I've had great luck with rose flavoring in ANYTHING so I knew this was the drink for me. After that, all my group ordered were the rose cocktails. I don't live in NYC, but when I come back for Thanksgiving, I will definitely be visiting this place again. Another LES speakeasy with the hidden room concept. I thought it was hilarious when the bouncer in front of Home Sweet Home acted like he had no idea what my group was talking about when we told him about our reservation for Fig 19. You totally need to play the part from start to finish. I like how this is one of the upcoming speakeasies - it didn't start getting crowded until like 11-midnight on a Friday. It was a mix of standing room and seating, but they could've improved on the seating set-up as it wasn't the most conducive towards group conversation. Drinks were what you'd expect to find at such an establishment - interesting concoctions at about $12 each. During the course of the night, i sampled 3; all of which had a different alcohol base, all of which were rave-worthy. Each was well balanced and full of flavor, exactly the way they should be. I was introduced to Fig 19 while visiting friends in New York, and it is by far the most exclusive and interesting bar I have ever been to. As we all entered the stark-white art gallery with portraits of emaciated naked women, I began to question my friend's idea of a "fun night out". That was until she walked to the back of the room and pushed open the hidden door (which was camouflaged with the wall) to a very sexy speakeasy bar below. All of my reservations faded away immediately. The mixologists at Fig 19 do not make mediocre drinks, they make art. The unique blend of flavors and gorgeous presentation made for an excellent end product. We ended the night in the club downstairs (which I'm not exactly sure whether or not it is part of Fig 19) dancing in a sea of sweaty beautiful people. So, if you want to have a "fun night out" go to Fig 19, if not just to see the look on your friends' faces when they step into that creepy art gallery. read more

Such a great place! My friends and I went on a mini-speakeasy crawl weekend of July 30, 2016 and we hit up Fig 19, Chloe 81, Happy Endings, and Attaboy. I'll have reviews of those as well and they were nice. But Fig 19 is so charming, I had to write! The Entrance: A good speakeasy should have a good entrance - this one was at the back of a gallery and you legit would not know it was there if you weren't looking for it. However, the bouncer outside (at the gallery door) gives away that you're obviously near a bar. Could he be stationed at the bar door? Does that make it too difficult for people to find? I think it would be cooler - but oh well. The Good: fantastic cocktail list and great playlist/music. Very cozy room and bartenders were really nice. The Bad: We noticed there wasn't quite enough seating - the layout is configured so that there is quite a bit of wasted space - but I guess it's good if you're the owner and want to maximize capacity. I had a vanishing point and 2 weeks later - IT HAUNTS MY DREAMS. Vanilla and cinnamon infused gin. Egg whites, lemon, something else - omg - it was so. good. GET HERE EARLY!!! and they open @ 8 PM not 9 PM as noted. This place is empty and I heard it gets really crowded after. I don't really like a place classy but get loud like a regular bar; otherwise I would be at a bar with half the price. Anyway, the drinks (don't remember the names) is top class with bold taste and definitely well made. Price ranged $13 to $15 which is typical and I will suggest Angel's share if you something classy and romantic for later hours. I swear this place is same as Home Sweet Home which is downstairs (I see that on my credit card bill). I haven't try HSH however, i heard the same but do let me know if I am wrong. Lately, I've been feeling more low key and I've been avoiding popular establishments on the weekends. However, because this place is only open Thurs-Sun after 9 PM, I really didn't have a choice. Going in on Friday night, I was worried that I'd have to fight a crowd of bitches in stilettos, but that wasn't the case! Like other reviewers mentioned, the door man is a bit rough, acting like you're trespassing a private event. All you gotta say is "Fig 19" and he'll roll his eyes and begrudgingly let you in! Once in, the bartender noticed us and immediately gave us a menu. So nice of him, seeing that the bar was a little busy and all the seats were taken at the time. The crowd was more late 20's/early 30's, trendy and well dressed. Despite the small space, it wasn't crowded at all, even at the 1:00 AM hour. Music was a bit too loud, and I did have to yell for a bit. It calmed down after a while, though. Now, of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world... I've enjoyed gin the most here. I tried the Purple Haze and The Brett - Brett was quite refreshing and I really liked the herbs de Provence infused syrup. It's taken me a while to warm up to gin, but this place has taught me to love it. The decor was a great conversation starter as well. Taxidermy kinda freaks me out but the animals and birds chosen just seem to belong there. Fig 19, I love you. It's only after going to so many cookie-cutter bars that you can truly appreciate the love and effort that went into this bar. First of all, I'm glad its difficult to get in here with a good bouncer out front. There is nothing worse than a crowded bar where you can't make your way to the bar and there is no chance of enjoying yourself. They're careful here to make sure that those people who do get in, have a nice time. The decor alone is worth a visit. The beautiful crystal chandeliers, the comfy booths and lovely wooden tables... all things I wish I could incorporate into my own living space. They just finished building and decorating the cabinet that really brings the space together. I absolutely love the space itself, with exposed brick. Even the bathrooms were adorable. As for the drinks, fabulous. The menu is well thought-out and there is a little something for everyone. I'm sure they'll build upon the drink list, since its very tequila-focused. I don't like tequila, but tried a sip of the margarita, holy crap that thing is good. I couldn't help myself with the rose gin cocktail, which is pretty much a perfect drink complete with a delicate rose petal. It's the little things in life... The music was also killer on a Friday night. A lot of soul and he kept things moving along. The kind of music you can't help but dance to even while your sitting down sipping a cocktail. Chair-dancing anyone? The bartenders were helpful, although it took a little bit a time to make the drinks. They're really complicated drinks, so its totally understandable. Fig 19 is a great hidden speakeasy. I came here a few weeks ago with several friends for my birthday on a Saturday night. We planned on stopping here before we made our way to a lounge that was a block away. I had never been to a speakeasy before so I wasn't sure how I would like it. The reviews helped a lot and I thought it would be something fun and different to do. Boy, was I glad to have picked this place! We made reservations to be there at 9 PM but were an hour late. I thought this was going to be a problem but the stoic bodyguard at the front was pretty chill once I mentioned it was my birthday and noticed my name on the list. Most of my friends didn't know that there would be an art gallery entrance so it was pretty cool to see their faces when we arrived. Once inside the lights were dimmed and there were a good amount of people standing around conversating and drinking. The place was much smaller than I imagined but it played well with the idea of it being an "exclusive" bar. They don't make just any drink there are you have to order from the menu but my drink was really good, I think it was called the Royal Prince. Anyways, my friends and I were standing for about ten minutes before I realized there was an empty booth towards the back. There was a reserved sign on the table which I figured was for me and one of the staff let us sit. We stayed there for about another 20 minutes before we had to head to our next location. Overall, my friends and I loved this place. It's not a place I would recommend being at all night but somewhere you can take friends or a date before heading somewhere else in the city. The drinks were reasonable priced for being a speakeasy and there was no cover. Majority of the people there seemed to be the hipster type and in their mid-twenties. Great speakeasy. I came here for the first time last Friday at around 8:30 PM to avoid the crowds, and at first, had to double-check whether or not there was a bar where I was standing. Surely enough, I was situated right in front of Fig. 19. The bouncer was randomly standing around, and at first, I wasn't sure whether he was the bouncer or just a random person. My friend and I stepped through what appeared to be an art gallery, which had no hint of sound (the soundproofing must be really good!). We entered through a door located in the far left side of the room that blended in with the gallery wall. (What kind of art gallery opens at this time of the night, and is it real?) Suddenly, we entered into another world- transported to a room full of lit candles, chandeliers, and a beautifully-decorated bar. The vibe was very intimate- perfect for a low-key night of drinking or a romantic date. My friend and I grabbed some menus and sat at a candle-lit table by what appeared to be a filled-in fireplace. The cocktail selection was interesting. I have noticed that some reviewers have cited inconsistencies in the drinks- perhaps rightfully so. On the night, I thought the Rhapsody in Rye was particularly well-balanced, while the Apple of My Eye wasn't too bad either. The attention to detail and level of service on the night was quite excellent. The bartender was extremely attentive and capable, and the staff even re-lit the candle at our table without being asked... 3 times! (Let's just say someone's laughter can be quite extinguishing!) A nice secret bar only for people in the know. This cozy speakeasy-type bar offers cool drinks and a relatively quiet atmosphere to bring a date or gather with a few friends. The coolest thing about this place is that you have to walk in through an art gallery, but the only way the bouncer will let you in is if you say the name of the bar you are going to and act like you've been there before, as there are no signs outside. read more

Super cute speakeasy that isn't too pretentious! We made reservations for a group of 6 girls for GNO. There wasn't as much so a hostess, so we were kinda left to find our own seats. There was a singular girl sitting at a relatively large table, so when we asked the bartender, they were quick to ask her if she wouldn't mind moving to the bar to accommodate us. The drinks here are mighty delicious, especially the rose drink! They also have water with fruit infused in it by the bar, and yes, it is just water (I know because I am the dumb one that asked...). It's quite dim in the bar, so be careful not to blow out the tea candles by accident from laughing too hard! read more

Really. Should I even be telling you about Fig 19? A still relatively secret speakeasy (as secret as those get in NYC), I'm gonna have to say this is a pretty top notch place. As I said before, it's a speakeasy so... lets talk about the entrance. Fig 19 is relatively well hidden behind a white door that blends in with the white walls of a hallway. You can actually see it through the glass doors that let you into the building if you look closely, but you probably won't as the bouncer outside the door will try to distract you with the silly question "where are you going ladies?". (erm.. or gents.... whichever). Just tell him you're going to Fig 19. Mr. Big Bad Bouncer did try to give us a hard time but after we insisted ("but we're just TWO girls!") and he gave us the requisite up-and-down, as many silly bouncers do, he relented. Sounds a little bit cumbersome, I know, but this place is pretty worth it. Upon entrance, you'll see a trendy lively little bar, filled with cool bartenders, sparkling chandeliers, good looking people, and prosecco on tap. Yes. You read that right. Prosecco. On Tap. Ask for a taste. If the bartenders are feeling as generous as they did when I visited, they'll just give you a full glass. Yes, drinks are sort of pricey, but it's a speakeasy with really good cocktails in NYC. Get used to it. Besides, if the bartenders are still having a good evening, they might even give you a few free rounds. I like Fig 19. It's a dark, brooding speakeasy that's nestled inside an art gallery past an unmarked door. We got there earlier in the evening, so we were able to sit down at one of the coveted small tables and admire our surroundings. The taxidermy decor is somewhat unusual, but interesting - definitely a good conversation starter. They serve a variety of well-crafted cocktails and to be honest, I can't remember a single name of the ones we drank that night... but there was one that literally tasted like cinnamon fire all the way down. The classic dilemma of quality nightlife spots in New York: to suffer crowds, or lengthy wait times? Thankfully, Fig 19 provides great cocktails in a relaxed setting with no problems getting in; probably some of this is attributable to its nondescript location at the back of a fluorescence-flooded gallery of uber modern art (I just... didn't get any of it). I can't remember the name of the cocktail I had - it was a combination of ginger & grapefruit juice - but it was decadent, a beautiful play of sugar & spice. Bottomline: Perfect spot to impress an unsuspecting date; but given that "speakeasy" cocktail bars are a dime a dozen in NYC, there are definitely better options (nearby too!) DRINKS: As expected from any craft cocktail institution in New York - a nice range of light refreshers as well as boozy brown and stirred. The backbar is well-stocked and the bartenders generally seem to know what they're doing. VIBE: Walking through an art gallery to find the bar entrance is definitely cool. The awkward line outside the art gallery blocked the bouncer is definitely NOT cool. Once inside the bar, however, the cacophony of voices shouting over each other and the DJ kind of ruins the speakeasy vibe. Great little speakeasy with interesting drinks and a cozy interior. Pretty dimly lit and a small seating area (you might have to push a few tables together to get a large group in). Entrance is behind an "art gallery" but the gallery might be devoid of art depending on when you go- in which case it'll look like an empty room under construction. I suppose it would be a pretty good place for a date since it'll look exclusive and insider. I would say the cocktails are actually decent, and a bit on the sweet side if you order anything with wine. read more

This place is small, but not that small, and it definitely has character. It's a lounge with enough seating and because you can't get in, it's really never going to ever be that packed, unless you're here for an event, which doesn't have much to do with the people behind this place: I was told by a little birdie that this place is a lot like Bungalow 8 of yesteryear - owned by a New Yorker who opened a fancy impossible place to get into so that she could party with her friends, like Amy Sacco did with Bungalow. Thanks Yelp! Was looking for a lounge with a chill vibe for last night to catch up with my roommate and Fig 19 was perfect for that. My review is for a Saturday night from 1030-1130. When we first got in, it wasn't very busy at all so we got seats at the bar, but by the time we left, the place was half full and I could tell the place would get more packed later. Cocktails were very yummy (if you've had a few speakeasy drinks...they all start to taste similar). No problems at the door, but then again, I was only with 1 other person. A hidden gem on a dimly lit street between the piles of trash in Chinatown. Well made drinks and excellent service by Jason, our barkeep for the evening. Let him be creative with the drinks, they'll keep you warm in the winter and you can't go wrong. The more you drink, the more immunity you build to protect you from the Chinatown smell, when you leave the bar. read more

Very trendy place. You enter through an art gallery and you're instantly inside a bar that serves up $24 mixed drinks and $7 Peronis. The atmosphere is alright and the coolest part is when you enter and exit since you're walking through the art gallery. The doorman was huge and not wanting to let randoms in - the guy in front of me was sol - I was there for a party so it was not a problem getting in since I just dropped the name and we were inside. There are a few other places in the neighborhood that I'm a bigger fan of but this place is good with a group. read more

There's nothing like a cool, quiet Sunday evening in spring. And Fig 19 was the perfect place to show off the chiller, low-key side of Manhattan to a friend visiting town. Every drink I ordered was near perfection, so I quickly swallowed my pride over the price and size. The Vanishing Point was my favorite and then the Brett. My friends liked their drinks too, but the spices with the tequilas were strong, and sometimes a bit overpowering. The other reason why I love this place is because the bathroom smells amazing! So good that the candle they put in there is available for purchase... Crazy, I know, but it all adds to that speakeasy something extra that makes you wanna come back. And return I will! read more
