I went there for a friend's birthday party! It was really fun! The decors at the bar were very unique. A lot of the decors were animals and it didn't creep me out. The drinks were on point, however I learned something new about whiskey and Hennessy sour. First I ordered the whiskey sour and there were a lot of foam at the top, I didn't think anything of it. I just thought maybe he shook it a lot. I then ordered a Hennessy sour and watched him make it. He then pulled out an egg and added egg white to the drink, to my surprise that was my drink. I instantly made a face and was disgusted by it but the bartender explained that the egg white made the foam at the top of the drink. I still decided to try it, and let me tell you it was good! Speakeasy factor: located at back of an art gallery next to a very popular, rowdy bar, you may be fooled into thinking that Home Sweet Home is your destination. It's not. Enter the gallery to the left of Home Sweet Home and head to the back where a door leads you into Figure 19. Pretty cool spot...quite intimate, neat decor, limited seating. Drinks ranged from okay to great. At one point, a well-known Fleetwood Mac tune came on and almost the entire bar started singing along. Fun. Dance-friendly. Worth a visit for sure but I probably wouldn't rank it high on my list of faves. read more

Came here on a Tuesday night after giving up on waiting in line for Attaboy. The bar is located behind a door in the back of a pretty eclectic art gallery. There is a bouncer outside so it's not terribly hard to find. Walk behind the doors and you are in fig 19. The space is very well decorated - there is a fireplace along with some old books and candles that add to the vibe of the place. There is a lot of open space in the middle but that was probably because we were here at 11:30PM on a tuesday. In any case, we easily found a table and began ordering drinks. You can just head over to the bar to order your drink. I got the Vanishing point - which is a vanilla bean and cinnamon infused gin, lemon juice, agave, egg white and sea salt. The drink was good. You can distinctly taste the different flavors, especially the vanilla, lemon juice and sea salt. I also got the Apple of my eye which is an apple brandy with prosecco, madeira, velvet falernum and lemon juice. The drink also came with a few thinly sliced pieces of apple. Overall this was a REALLY refreshing drink, especially as I started munching on the apple slices halfway into the drink (had to let them marinate a little you know?) I haven't had an apple inspired drink nor actual apples in my drink at all and this was definitely an eye-opener for me. My friend got the Midnight in Paris which consisted of tequila, ginger syrup, bitter cocoa liqueur, lemon juice and mole bitters. The drink was good and tasted like dark cocoa but was a bit too bitter for me and I don't like gingery drinks so I'll stay away from that, but not a bad drink if you like ginger and chocolate! My only qualm about this place is that it was super loud! Don't know why but I definitely didn't have a quiet, intimate setting when I came like some of the other reviewers had. Music was blazing and I had to lean in to hear what my friends were saying half the time. Maybe tone down the music a little? This place was really great. It wasn't too busy that my friend and I couldn't move around. The drinks were good and the DJ was just nostalgic enough to trigger good memories rather than middle school trauma. There were many taxidermy animals behind the bar which only got creepier as the night waxed full. Cocktails were all $15 as I recall. The blackberry margarita was enjoyable. A hidden gem! We came here super early right when they opened hoping to avoid a crowd and were the first ones in. We snagged a corner booth and got cozy and took in the amazing atmosphere - dim lit, chic, but eclectic at the same time. There are just two bartenders so you can sit wherever you want but there isn't table service, which was amazing because we could order just what we wanted. The drinks are all really good but definitely on the sweeter side. Super fun place to come to start off your night or have a girls night. A true speakeasy. This place is HIDDEN!. Don't make the mistake of going downstairs to the next door dive bar. Walk into the "art gallery" that probably rivals the museum of sex (i'm not sure...i never checked out that museum...i swear!) The place is small but the drinks pack a punch. Let me get this out of the way first: I love that the address is 131 1/2 - it makes my [not so inner] Harry Potter nerd very happy. That being said... Fig 19 is a speakeasy bar that is next to a dive bar and oddly has the same bouncer. Or maybe it's owned by the same person in which case, it's odd at all. Anyway, A and I went to Fig 19 last weekend and showed our ID to the bouncer who was standing in front of the dive bar (thinking it was Fig 19). Somehow it didn't seem like the vibe of a speakeasy so we asked if we were at the right place and he pointed next door to what looked like an empty gallery. At the dubious looks on our faces, he chuckled and said we may wanna come to the dive bar after checking out Fig 19. Not so! For a small space, the place was packed. We managed to find one seat at the bar at first, but luckily by the time we were ready for our second drink, the stool next to me became available. I don't recall the names of the drinks we imbibed that night, but one that remains starkly in my memory had lavender in it. Light and fragrant; it was my first time having a cocktail with lavender in it and I don't think it'll be my last. ^^ Overall, all the drinks were well made as "expected" of a speakeasy. One of the reasons I frequent speakeasies (other than the quality of drinks) though is the sense of exclusivity (makes for a quieter, more low key night), so I think I'd that's what you're looking for, perhaps a weekday is the best time to visit when there are generally less people out and about. The bouncer sitting on the metal steps outside of The Lodge Gallery gives the location away but only if you know what you're looking for. After our IDs were checked on a weeknight, we stepped into an empty and pristine art gallery. We were the only people inside the gallery and spent a few minutes lingering in front of Elizabeth Livingston's art pieces. Initially we thought they were photographs but upon closer inspections, we realized that we have been admiring paintings! Her paintings capture moments of suburban life and have a photograph's glow to them. For a minute, we lost ourselves into her art and completely forgot we were trying to find a cocktail bar. As we stepped closer to a white door at the corner of the art gallery, we heard music pumping from behind the wall. This must be the secret door to Fig. 19 speakeasy! Chandeliers, plush lounge seats, and a roaring (fake) fireplace greeted us. The decor is beautiful and classy. Bartenders greeted us and invited us to sit anywhere in the bar. There were many empty seats and tables on a Wednesday night. It truly felt like we were privileged guests, perhaps VIPs of the art gallery. Perfect ambience with a sophisticated speakeasy entrance. Cocktails were $13 each, which is relatively cheap for a NYC bar. We had The Prince (vodka, lavender syrup, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice) and The Red Leaf (whiskey, red wine reduction, sherry, dry vermouth, absinthe). Unfortunately, their mixology was a bit disappointing. The Prince tasted like sour lemon candy and The Red Leaf like cherry cough medicine. Perhaps their other drinks taste better? I would love to come back here for its perfect speakeasy vibe. read more

Isn't it funny how the first time someone takes you to a place, without a word you tend to concur with their impressions of it? It cements the fact that the goodness/badness of any establishment is a deeply personal thing, dependent on the behaviors and assumptions of the people you're there with, certainly never objective. I've been here a couple times now, always early on Friday evenings when it's empty. Enter through an unmarked door in the back of an art gallery. Wonderful things about walking in: the faintly musty smell, the lighter cooler air, the stark white gallery walls zipping up suddenly into a dark, enclosed space. The cocktails are nothing stunning. The best one is the Vanishing Point, a drink made with egg white (which I usually avoid in cocktails). It's a sweet, smooth, clarifying version of eggnog, minus the cream. The other drinks I've had here all fall along the same lines - sweet - but without the benefit of a reference drink to make them interesting. They were enjoyable, but not enough to consistently pay $14 for each. I'd seek this place out only as a quiet speakeasy guaranteed not to be too crowded. A last whiny note from yours truly: Many of the drinks are served in those dreaded shallow coupe glasses, second only to martini glasses in terms of impracticality and silliness. Bleh! read more

I was lucky enough to be invited here by a friend of the owner and we had such a killer time we went back the next night. This place is gonna be great. Dont think they have figured out if they are going to be "exclusive" and keep people away (which would be ideal) or "a free for all" and jam this place every night. As they have it now (seems to be a bit exclusive this could quickly become my favorite place in the city. The fancy looking space is situated on a rare block on Chrystie and brings it!!! Home sweet Home is directly below and owned by the same owners. I have got to say, Fig 19 is head and shoulders above its downstairs counterpart. It is a very sexy space that will intrigue many good looking people (like our crew, HA!) who are looking to get away from the normal LES/East Village parties (not a bad thing, this place is just different and better). Why you should go here: The drinks are phenomenal and reasonably priced. If you are lucky enough to find yourself here, make sure to order the jalapeno margaritas, they are amazing and do the trick. Do make sure to try and score the big booth in the back. Close to the bar, closeish to the bathroom and a perfect vantage point to see who is coming and going (pun intended). Introduce yourself to the door men and the bartenders. They are some of the nicest people in the business from what I can tell. OInly caveat I would stress: I think this place is more of a come chill, drink some drinks have some fun but keep in under control. If you have ever been downstairs to Home Sweet Home, you know how different this sounds from what goes on down there. Again, not a bad thing this place just does most things better. Why might not want to go there: Umm...cant think of a reason. It might be super hard to get into once they decide which direction they are going with their door policy. But I will be at the front of that line, if they will have me back. read more

I was in love the moment I stepped through the... Painting. Two of my friends brought me here. I had no clue where they were taking me, but I'm glad I went along for the ride. We stepped into what seemed like an ordinary art gallery. I was nervous because it seemed that the placed was shut down for the night and I'm not into nefarious activity that might put priceless art in jeopardy. As I respectfully started to admire the art (thinking that's what we were doing for the evening), someone opens a door into this Beautiful Speakeasy. The decor is clean, classic and classy simultaneously. Where one might question function, there still presents aesthetic (e.g. the candles in place of a full flame in the fireplace). I found myself staring at the elongated chandeliers between sips. The detail continues into the restrooms (How many venues could you say that about?). Maybe you don't care for the decor. That's ok because the cocktails are expertly mixed. That is not a cliché. Watch your bartender as they precisely, mix, blend and pour with precision before taking that first sip. You'll appreciate it that much more. Then relax and stare at the chandelier while contemplating life's many intricacies. Bottomline: Go! ... I recommend a Thursday night though, maybe with a date. I heard it gets a little crowded on the weekends, but don't take my word for it. read more

Shhhhhhh... this place is great..don't let other people know. When you walk up its this very brightly lit gallery with sketches on the wall..but a bouncer cards you at the door. I thought this was because there would be naked photos?? In either case, my mysterious bae said we should go inside. Then..after watching a man frantically draw on the wall while other students were watching, my mysterious bae walked over to a side wall and....opened it. There is this super smexy bouchy bar hidden in the back behind a wall! We came around 9pm (I think) and were able to get seats at the bar.The drinks are crazy good, they have about 100 ingredients and it takes ~15min to order because the two bartenders have to spend so much time making drinks. In either case, great date night/people watching/mysterious what are we doing tonight - night. You can also get away with wearing slightly fancier clothes here too! read more

Want to step into a time machine and revisit the thirsty days of Prohibition? Look no further than Fig 19! It's a swanky speakeasy that actually requires a lot of looking. Like any speakeasy worth getting into, Fig 19 is super discreet. From the outside, there's little to tip off patrons. My friends and I walked up and down the empty street. We were at the listed address but there was no lounge, music, flashy lights, or people in sight. We eventually spotted a living soul, a big man sitting outside a dark building. Even the bouncer is inconspicuous! (He must get so amused watching folks wander aimlessly searching for this place). To get in to Fig 19, you have to walk through an art gallery and find an unmarked door located in the rear corner. Once you step through the door, you're transported to the roaring 1920's: dark woods, countless candles and crystal chandeliers, vintage furniture, and stylish Art Deco decor. Fig 19 is legit. They even have an antique cash register! The speakeasy is also really loud and lively (the soundproofing is amazing, would have never guessed there was a bar behind that door). It was extremely packed on a Saturday night and we couldn't find any tables or seats. We ended up asking a party to scooch over and shared a sofa. Fig 19's mixologists are friendly and dedicated to their craft. My boyfriend went for their signature drink, Vanishing Point (vanilla bean and cinnamon infused gin, fresh lemon juice, agave, egg white, sea salt). To separate the egg white, the bartender literally cracked open THREE eggs before finally getting it right on the fourth try. They care enough to make each cocktail count. I ordered The Prince (Vodka, lavender syrup, elderflower liquer, fresh lemon juice), and one of my friends had the Apple of My Eye (apple brandy, velvet falernum, prosecco, fresh lemon juice, madeira wine). We all enjoyed our drinks; I especially loved The Prince for its refreshing blend of sweet floral notes and tangy citrus zest. The cocktails, service, and design are stellar. Try to arrive early because once the crowds roll in, it's deafening and hard to hear your own thoughts. Fig 19 is a terrific speakeasy that will make any gangsta proud. read more

This is a legit speakeasy. I almost went into the bar downstairs (Home Sweet Home) but luckily I asked the bouncer where Fig. 19 was located. The bouncer was standing between Home Sweet Home and an art gallery. Based on the reviews I read, I did not know that Fig. 19 was located through a secret door in the art gallery. So, when I asked the bouncer "Where is the bar?" I basically handed in my New Yorker card and looked like a complete n00b tourist. Better safe than sorry - the last thing I wanted to do was open the wrong door. Sometimes, a surprise is not the best thing on the other side of the door! The bar is a stark contrast to the art gallery. The gallery is bright, white and sparse. The bar is brooding, dark and cluttered with knickknacks - including taxidermied animals. I really loved some of the details, especially the back bar. Check out that spooky animal and owl. Creeptastic. The fireplace was also very inviting. The peacock was beautiful and very watchful. Dead serious. See what I did there? I know. No shame. From the menu, I selected the Rhapsody in Rye, made with rosemary infused rye, ginger syrup, Campari, fresh grapefruit juice and sea salt. It had a certain bite to it from the ginger but was overall very balanced. Scott ordered the Red Lead, made with Irish whiskey, red wine reduction, dry vermouth, Sherry and Absinthe. I gave it a sip - a very complex flavor profile from the reduction and the Absinthe. Although I was initially annoyed I couldn't make a reservation, I'm glad we had an hour to kill! I had no idea this speakeasy existed. Make sure to add it to your list of hidden NYC treasures - like PDT and Milk & Honey. read more

Unassuming speakeasy with a small menu of well concocted drinks but the overall crowd and atmosphere drops this place down on my list. Hidden behind the backdoor of an art gallery, the place is small but oddly organized as there is one tiny bar in the back corner and a few small tables along the edge of the wall with the rest of the space being empty floor space. Given that it's not your typical dancey LES bar, the arrangement doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. The drinks themselves here are good, with well mixed flavors but it takes forever to order anything. We were literally sitting at the bar counter having arrived on the early side of the night, but it took 10+ min to finally get a bartenders attention to order drinks. The place gets super crowded and noisy which seems to defeat the purpose of a speakeasy to begin with - wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for a quieter more intimate place to get drinks. read more

Picture yourself walking through an art gallery (that may or may not have art on the walls), opening an unassuming, unmarked door and walking into a candlelit speakeasy decked out with glistening chandeliers and a "fireplace" filled with flickering candles. That's Fig 19. I had a difficult time choosing from the enticing cocktail menu but settled on The Prince and was quite pleased with my decision. I also had a sip of The Vanishing Point - sweet like candy. There isn't a lot of seating but my date and I were able to snag a small table near the "fireplace." I expected it to be a little more low key and quieter but there were at least two parties that were particularly loud. Despite this, it was relatively empty for a Saturday night. There seems to be a dress code that's loosely enforced. If you know the bouncer he might let you slide. Don't wear flip flops. (Side note: I wasn't wearing flip flops but my date was...) read more

My fiancée and I love this place. Though seating can be tough on a busy night, the cocktails are delicious. I think the Vanishing Point might be one of the best I've ever encountered, to be honest. If you like creamy, gin cocktails the Vanishing Point is the one. The atmosphere is chill most nights, though don't expect calm on Friday or Saturday night. Every time I think the speakeasy trend is getting boring, I discover a place that revives my love for it. Fig 19 is one of those places. Enter through an art gallery, and suddenly you're in a space that perfectly mixes rustic and glamorous (think raw wood tables below, decadent deco crystal chandeliers above, and weird taxidermy-esque figurines behind the bar. The drinks are perfectly well balanced, and the bartenders are also glad to do "bartender's choice" and surprise you with something off-menu. It can take a little bit of waiting to get a seat at the bar, but if you don't mind standing around for your first drink or two, this is a great place to hang out and people watch for an evening. The crowd is mostly late-20s/early 30s yuppies, and the people are generally pretty interesting if you strike up a conversation. read more

"An establishment that illegally sells alcoholic beverages" formally known as Speakeasy. It is not illegal nowadays but the concept is been taken to create such feeling on our current times. Granted. When you walk the dark shady streets in your way to Fig.19 to an address that claim magic mystery (like the train platform to Hogwarts castle that Potter+friends use to take) you really put yourself on an Speakeasy mood. Am I in the right direction? Am I doing the right thing coming here? your face yelling guilty! while showing your ID to the bouncer. Come into the bright beautiful art gallery wondering if you are actually in the right place .. open the white wall, literally... ... and voilà the "speakeasy mood" suddenly went away as soon as I walked towards the secret entrance. The space is certainly dark, a combination of ancient and vintage decor, somehow beautiful but not as charming as I have seen in a few others. Most importantly it is extremely loud with music that does not feel relaxing at all. Forget about having a conversation with whoever. And even most important, our bartender does not seem to be devoted to make that special drink. See people at Pegu, Lantern's keep, B Flat or Silver lining and so on and you will see what I mean. It was just my impression? maybe, but to me, it looks like she "just poured a drink". Nothing wrong, I guess. But then, the drinks ... Well, satisfying, but my ginger drink was extremely ginger-ish on a way that I couldn't finish it. Is it that I don't have tolerance enough for ginger?. Well, I can tell is not. But obviously it is on question. My friend's Vanishing point was actually good enough even when it didn't meet my expectations based on the paper description. I loved the texture of the egg white. But nothing I haven't had before and because of the vanilla/cinnamon infused spirit that was the predominant note, it was good like having dessert. Nothing extraordinary however, neither I notice the sea salt anywhere. Also the drink spilled out her glass and it was all really messy but as I said the bartender just poured the drink and asked for $26 dollars twice without even telling us which one is which one. Yeah the check goes first. I just felt it was careless and that broke the moment. So here is my dilemma. Is it fair considering I paid one visit only? I think the drinks are not bad, but definitely not reaching the level of the infamous speakeasies in town. In those, I may don't feel that "illegal" in my way there, just when I am actually in. Contrarily, at Fig.19 speakeasy seems to be doors outside only not the other way around. Maybe it is not a dilemma after all. read more

Reynolds is the man, and the reason to go to Fig19. I've been to all the joints (pdt, death&co, milk&honey, blah blah blah), and there is no bartender I would rather explore the Spirit world with than this dude. Most approaches to cocktails are based off older recipes, whereas Reynolds starts from scratch reimagining sugars, herbs and spices, and citrus. Or recreating an old fashioned that is not the way to make an old fashioned. Or adding macadamia nut bitters to dial in my favorite manhattan. He's one crazy friendly long-haired mad man, part scientist, part groover, part best friend to all. And when you see him at work, it's on one hand mesmerizing and on another hand wow, don't eff with this dude because he knows what he is doing. If you see a crazy dude with long curly locks behind the bar, just tell him your spirit choice and let him do his thing! read more

Oh, I am so confused. Secret? Art gallery? Speakeasy? New? Wait. What? No, it's none of those things. It's barely hidden, there might be pictures on the walls (but I have pictures on my walls and I don't say that my apartment, while cute, is an art gallery), and it is definitely not a speakeasy. It's a faux speakeasy and, though the space is cool, with the white walls, and the fireplace and the feathers, the vibe, especially later in the evening, is sophomoric. And listen, I love my cocktails. I love a good, delicately made cocktail. And that's what they serve, per their menu. But gah, this trend does not do well when the bar is 5 people deep and the two gals tending to it are just dumping and swirling and dumping, and then charging $15. Crowded bar + Penicillin (or what have you) = expensive swill. It's ridiculously loud. It looks like it would be a nice place for a conversation, but not when you can't hear anything, so toss those notions of doing some charming flirting out the window. I had my hopes, but it is not for me (it could be for you, though, if you're from out of town, or 19). read more

Fig 19 is one of the newest in the Speakeasy circuit being only opened for a couple of months. Overall a welcome new spot that is sure to end up extremely crowded in no time. Hence, I'd try it sooner than later. How to find it: It's just above Home Sweet Home. The doors have a weird logo and there is a dark art gallery inside. You cannot see the backroom where the bar is located from the door. The doorman will general do his job and stop you as if you're going into private property. It's all good. Just tell him your going to Fig 19. The Crowd: There was none the night we were there. The owners are uber trendy stylish ladies. Really some of the best dressed I'd seen in the LES. They are trying to cater to the LES artist crowd. This may be why people tend to thinkk the drinsk are expensive. They are actually $12, which puts them right in line to slightly cheap for a mixology place. Atmosphere: The bartenders were both extremely friendly and typical trendy good looking LES. The decor is is crystal posh. Very clean, because it's new. It's doing the whole "woodsy" thing that is so popular, because of Twilight. Totally digging the vibe. The music was a little loud and if it had been crowded, it would have been hard to chat. The people appear generally interesting enough that they could probably turn it down and have a better situation. Drinks: Delicious and expanding from what I understand. Ditto sentiments on the Margarita. It's definitely not your typical drink. They also make a blood orange one that is wonderful. I had God Save the queen which was nice. And a Rose drink, which was delightful. Both were girly. The Manhattan is a bit of a twist on an old favorite and worth a try if you like whiskey. Other winners were the blackberry prosecco with cocoa tequilla and the pumpkin spice seasonal. The Matador was a pass for the group as a whole, though I thought it was interesting and some might like it. Not super sweet. BTW they are selective at the door somewhat. So on a busy night you could get turned away. My sense is that they won't do it in a snarky way, as they don't seem like that type. It's large enough, but I could easily see it being becoming popular quite quickly. Other notes: They do not serve food. They are only open Th-Sat and open at 9pm. This place may just be my favorite spot after coming here two nights in a row... Friday and Saturday! Friday night upon entering this place I did not realize this was the place I had bookmarked and been wanting to go here for awhile now but I guess I kept putting it off. Finally came here w/ a friend whom suggested it but forgot the name of the place. At first the bouncer was busting his balls in which I found funny... An inconspicuous art gallery. Behind those big gray metal doors... A beautiful intimate bar w/ these beautiful chandeliers coming down from the ceiling... Such a great concept. Friday night was pretty packed I have to say compared to last night (Saturday). Of course coming back here Saturday w/ a girlfriend of mine and ordered drinks. It was pretty good. Ran into the same bouncer whom introduce himself & was super sweet (Joe)! Only a minor downside... I have to say is that we had the same bartender whom made our drinks Friday & Saturday. The same friend who joined my girlfriend & I a little bit later. He ordered a bourbon on the rocks through a different bartender in which price was 14$ Saturday rather than 11$ on Friday. Found that kind of weird that the price fluctuates.. Also an itemized receipt of what was order would be great only because people leave a tab and would like to know what we are getting charged for. I will admit I am ALWAYS SKEPTICAL of leaving a tab open only because I have heard about people getting overcharge w/ drinks they didn't order etc.. Better safe than sorry. I had the unfortunate luck of coming to Fig. 19 for the first time while hopping between dive bars and speakeasies in the LES. Fig 19 fits unattractively between the two. They accomplish this by providing the idea of being classy and unique like a speakeasy but being as crowded, noisy and irritating as a dive bar (without the low prices). If you're looking for a good time on the town, avoid the 20-30 somethings who *think* they're doing something cool and hang with the ones who *are* at a place like Nitecap on Rivington or Fig 19's downstairs neighbor: Home Sweet Home. **If you must come here, note that in the winter there is no coat check (or wasn't when I went). Coats pile up on the chairs and any surface they can find, while selfish people crowd the bar. Oy. I was beyond irritated here. read more

Kristen Vincent, the owner of Home Sweet Home, recently opened up Fig.19 right next door to the popular hipster bar on the lower east side. Fig.19 is a grown up version of Home Sweet Home. It's got a vintage feel to the place, rustic wooden floors, lots of cocktail tables and candle light, with tons of chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Perfect intimate space to rent out for a private event. It just opened a few weeks ago, so not too many people know it exists. The crowd is still defining it's identity, but this is definitely cool little hidden spot. Ask the bartender to make you a specialty drink. Could become a cool speak easy mixology bar.
