I love Birdie's for all meals! I've been for brunch and dinner, and I was pleased with both experiences! Birdie's is located in the heart of Downtown Raleigh, right on Fayetteville Street. There is street parking, but also a parking deck right across the street. The decor is absolutely lovely, and it's spacious with a beautiful bar. There's also a cafe in the front if you just want to drop in for some treats to go or coffee. Although they have a nice cocktail menu, they also have a full bar if you'd like something that is not on their menu. On the brunch menu, they have an item called Mimosa Party, which has 4 different flavors: range, dragonfruit, pear, mango. I've had other cocktails, and they are all delicious and made to order! Now for the food. The food that I've had has been flavorful and very good. Also, they have a lot of options that aren't very heavy if you're looking for some lighter options. When I went for brunch, I had the Hippie Hash Bowl, and it was delicious. I didn't want anything too heavy, but still breakfast-related, and it was perfect for that. For dinner the last time I went, I had the Creamy Chicken Penne Pasta with Cajun seasoning and blackened chicken. I was trying to decide which dish to order, and my server suggested adding Cajun seasoning and blackened chicken to the dish, and boy was it delicious. The restaurant itself is really pretty, but this was my second time coming in for dinner, and I was really hoping for a better experience this time around. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing again. We ordered the tomato soup with grilled cheese and the Cobb salad with steak. Both dishes were good, but the biggest issue was the wait. Despite the restaurant not being very busy, it took over an hour for our food to come out and there wasn't much communication from our server about the delay. I'd definitely be more understanding if we had come in with a large group or ordered some of the more involved entrees, but when it's just two people ordering relatively simple dishes on a day that the restaurant is not very busy, waiting over an hour is tough. Our server did apologize and mentioned that this isn't typically the case. However, after reading through some other reviews, it does seem like the long wait times may be a recurring issue. I will say that our server kindly comped our drinks, which I appreciated. One suggestion I'd have for the restaurant would be to consider offering a complimentary bread service as it would go a long way in making the wait feel a little more manageable. They have plenty of seating in the dining room and on the outside patio. There's also a green space with corn hole and swinging benches. It's a family friendly restaurant with romantic vibes as well inside. We started with cocktails and starters of Crispy Brussels and the Kale Cesar Salad (we added Salmon). The cocktails were made perfectly and so refreshing! The Kale Cesar was absolutely delicious, the salmon added on top was perfect! While enjoying every bite of our starters, we ordered our entrees. The restaurant has a small cafe to your left as you enter for coffee and pastries. But the main restaurant is straight ahead, and you can dine inside or outside on the covered patio. There was a bar as well. I was asked where I wanted to sit, and then whether I wanted a low top or a high top. I even got to select my own table when we got to the dining area. The decor is very modern and contemporary, from the brass bar to the floor-to-ceiling windows to the marble flooring. But the atmosphere was welcoming and casual. It is a very busy place, so I highly recommend making reservations. My waitress was very friendly and gave me time to look over the menu. I started with a blackberry mojito. Then went with the classic Bennie and swapped the herb potatoes for fries. I enjoyed their version of the eggs Benedict and was happy with the runny yolks in the poached eggs. The fries were cold, though, so I am assuming they sat out while the Benedict was finishing preparation, or the dish sat in the kitchen before being brought out. I wouldn't order the fries again. I did get the Brookie for dessert, which was part chocolate chip cookie and brownie. It came out in a good-sized skillet, so the portion was large, I'd say enough for 4 people. So I took most of it to go and ate a bite here and there for a while. The restrooms could use more attention to cleaning and making sure they are stocked with toilet paper and such. We came here on a Saturday right after seeing the Walk for Peace Monks at the capital. We started with the beef sliders. The beef sliders were really good and tasty. They were cooked to perfection and the caramelized onion jam added a sweet element to the savory burger. There are some things salt and pepper can't fix and the chicken penne pasta is one of them. The grilled chicken was great but the pasta sauce and the penne pasta wasn't seasoned. There was nothing special about the Alfredo sauce. It was bland, and tasteless. I think I could've gotten a jar of Ragú or Prego from Harris Teeter and that might've had more flavor. The salmon was cooked well. I was so excited to come here to try the French toast, however, this was our first time out with our 6 month old, so we got there a little after 11am, which is when they stop serving their brunch menu. I didn't realize they had a separate breakfast, lunch and dinner menu (I guess they use brunch and breakfast interchangeably) so definitely something to note if you have your eye on a specific dish. We started with the pull apart bread which was reminiscent of the old school cafeteria rolls I had in elementary school (a great comparison) and were delicious - wonderful crunch on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. It came with chive butter, then the host gave us the honey butter. Both were good, I just preferred the chive. I had the roasted turkey French dip which was good, just not memorable. I already thought Birdie's would be good based off pictures and videos I had seen but it actually surpassed my expectations when I came in. To start off- the restaurant is huge and beautiful. There's gorgeous bar seating, booth/table seating, and outdoor seating to choose from. It's a great spot for pictures as well. Parking is a little tricky- gotta get lucky with street parking or find a nearby lot since it is downtown. At the front of the restaurant there is a little cafe with desserts and coffee. I'm a sucker for a good coffee so my friend and I both ordered a strawberry matcha which your server will bring to your table or you can wait for. The matcha was GREAT and I would definitely try their other drinks based off that. My friend also got a slice of cake which she enjoyed. For lunch, we got the deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, and proper burger. The deviled eggs change flavors monthly I believe and they were very good. The shrimp and grits were a 10/10 and extremely flavorful. I normally like a smashburger and was hesitant to try the proper burger, but it was fantastic. Not having to drive around looking for street parking is a huge plus! For appetizers, we ordered the deviled eggs, the pull-apart bread, and the Brussel sprouts. We decided that we could just have appetizers as our main meal. They were fantastic! I ordered the Roasted Turkey French Dip - OMG it was sooo good! The bread is soft, the melt-in-your-mouth turkey and the slightly sweet and tangy cranberry is something I will go back for! The French fries are amazing, too. I could only eat half my sandwich because I had filled up on appetizers! My husband ordered the Buttermilk-Brined Crispy Chicken sandwich. He said it was incredible. Unfortunately, our experience at Birdie was disappointing. The restaurant was not that busy, yet it took 45 mins for our food to arrive. My salmon was raw in the middle. I also ordered Brussels sprouts that never came out. The other person in our party ordered the halibut, which was supposed to come with cauliflower, but the cauliflower never arrived either. We brought these issues to our waiter's attention, and my salmon was taken back to the kitchen. It would have been nice to keep the quinoa from the original dish while waiting. When the salmon came back out, it was a much smaller end piece, and the quinoa was drenched in butter and not prepared the same way as the original. We also had to flag down our waiter for a second round of drinks. When our water carafe was empty, I had to ask him to refill it. He did, but we shouldn't have to ask. To their credit, they removed all of the food from the bill, which we appreciated. However, the manager never came by to apologize or check on us and left the waiter to handle everything. Overall, there were simply too many issues for one dinner. We expected much better, especially since the restaurant was not busy. The mimosas were a little small for my taste but I had the a speciality coffee drink, which was served in a to go cup instead of a large mug, I hope they make that change to large mugs. I also ordered the hippie hash bowl and a side of potatoes I believe and it was very filling. The portions were a good size and the brunch food was flavorful. It was a clean look inside, the floor may be a little slick so just be careful about heels and the bar was long with lots of space for walk ups. Birdies has such a wonderful weekday breakfast! The ambiance and the decor in the restaurant is gorgeous, so inviting and brightly lit. The staff is always super friendly and willing to accommodate. Weekday breakfast can get pretty busy and on this particular day it seemed they did not have enough servers for all the customers but it was a Monday so maybe that's to be expected. There's something for everyone on the breakfast menu but the standard was delicious, the perfect assortment of all the classic breakfast items cooked perfectly. Definitely get reservations before going. They sat us down quickly. The service could have been a little quicker in between ordering and delivering. Took a while for our waitress to come to the table initially. It also took a while for our waitress to take our main order. Because of the slow pace, we were getting full off the appetizers and almost didn't order a main course. The food was very good. The deviled eggs were amazing. The Brussel sprouts had a good flavor, the bread with gravy, jelly and butter. The Bloody Mary was super delicious. My friends enjoyed their mimosa flight. The standard breakfast was good. The eggs were so delicious and the bacon was cooked perfectly. I can't wait to return! read more
