They were obviously made fresh and were just the right size and price for what I was in the mood for. Full disclosure: I came to Rockville to get my lechon fix at Kuya Ja's, but discovered it's closed on Tuesdays. Still craving crispy pork, we searched for another Filipino restaurant nearby, and found Filo Cafe just 3 minutes away. Thank goodness! Got my plate of lechon with rice and I couldn't be happier. The pieces are smaller in comparison, but each piece was perfectly crispy and juicy. My spouse enjoyed his tocilog with garlic rice and egg (gotta love all day breakfast!), and we couldn't resist carioca, sweet rice balls, to take home, along with homemade bagoong (shrimp paste). I tried 3 dishes: lumpia, palabok, and lechon kawali. The lumpia was good and seems traditional. The palabok was a bit odd to me. It was very soggy clear thick noodles which had no flavor and tasted very wet. The Lechon kawali was such a disappointment! It was not crispy at all. It tasted like boiled pork belly with no color. Filo Cafe is a lovely place in an unassuming location. We both ordered the Kamayan platter with variations on the meat choices. We also mixed it up with the lumpia as well so we could sample more of the options. Our dinner was presented on banana leaves making for an authentic experience. The platter was a good portion size and could have been shared with two diners. Since we wanted leftovers, we got two platters. Overall, we enjoyed our meals. I loved the pancit and bihon. The beef was dry and chewy. Pork was good and reminded me of char siew. I've always loved lumpia. I like that they're thinly rolled, unlike egg rolls where the stuffing falls out. The service was extremely kind and patient. I say this because we were utterly confused as to how to order and what was included in the kamayan. It was my first time in person ordering, I usually order on uber. I recommend both options. Some items are limited on uber so I do recommend in person but both options are great to try their amazing food. The cashier was so nice and informative. I subscribe to their instagram for menu updates and I got to meet the lady in all the videos. She was very sweet in person. I tried bangus (milk fish) with egg breakfast. Fish was crispy and thick. Included was head and tail where some places only have one or the other. Fish kind of lacked being marinated but they do include a vinegar cup to dip. I do appreciate the freshness and clean appearance of the meal. 3.5-4 stars overall: Filo cafe is a somewhat small sized mom and pop restaurant featuring, you guessed it, filipino cuisine. They're what I would consider a more traditional/less Americanized spot. They do put a sign on their counter that lets you know that ALL items have meat - even the ones that say vegetarian . First impression: when you walk in, it's very open, bright, clean and clean smelling. There were about 15 or so tables - most were unoccupied and people were coming in and out to place/pick up takeout orders. There's a pretty grassy backdrop - perfect for photo Ops lol and about 4 or so board games (e.g., connect4, Sorry, uno). It made for a welcoming and chill environment. We were greeted by a very friendly young lady at the counter, who was super patient answering all of only questions. Food: We ordered several different things because I wanted to try multiple things. I ordered the Lechon kawali, which came with garlic fried rice and some fresh cucumber and tomato slices. The Lechon was lightly seasoned with a very crispy skin. I do wish there was a little bit more meat for the price point but it wasn't bad. That rice was yummmmm. At the server's recommendation for kid-friendly options, my eldest ordered chicksilog. That's a fried chicken wing combo with garlic rice, topped with a soft fried egg and the cucumber/tomato slices. She really really enjoyed the chicken (as did my youngest). That soft fried egg really rounded everything out. We also ordered lumpia cuz who can get Filipino food without lumpia?? They offer a few types of crispy lumpia (pork, chicken, beef), vegetable lumpia and a fresh lumpia. So we ordered pork lumpia and vegetable lumpia, which she made clear to us still had meat it in. So if you're vegan or vegetarian, don't get that. But they tasted amazing!!! I saw another person pick up an order of these little containers with white and dark brown liquid. So I asked the server what it was. Admittedly, I can't remember the name but she told me it was a syrup with tofu. I figured since others were getting it, it must've been good. Not too shabby. I haven't eaten dessert with tofu in it, so that may have been my mental block/challenge but the syrup was a good balance. Not overly sweet. So a protein-rich and warm dessert! Lol. She also ordered a mango boba cuz she loves a good boba. This did not disappoint! I think she may have even drank it all before we made it back home to the house. I had a coworker recommend this place to me since my other option for filipino catered food is closed on the day of an upcoming event. I never knew this spot existed. Needless to say, they passed my taste test so we'll be placing our catering order here. There's ample open parking here. It's in an unsuspecting shopping center off of boiling brook pkwy. Tucked away in a quiet shopping center, I love how this place has brightened up the strip a little more. The service was extremely friendly and it was nice to hear about how they were in business in Virginia Beach for about 7 years before they relocated here. We got there a little after 5 so right before a dinner rush but not late lunch but there were still a good amount of people enjoying their meals. Get there early if you want their desserts though; those go quick. We enjoyed our lechon, garlic rice, and lumpia but what we loved most of all was their little pay it forward board! If anyone wanted to pay ahead of time for meal/drink/dessert, you can and likewise, if you need a little pick me up you can take some kindness from others. I felt like everything was overpriced for what it is worth. The parking is free and orders placed ahead was available upon arrival which was great. However, I found it abominable that a cup of regular green tea bag + hot water poured into a plastic cup and ice dumped in is sold for $4.95+ tax. The other food items were mediocre for the amount of food and quality it comes in. I was not happy with any of the products I ordered. The lumpia tasted very greasy and mostly empty inside. The rice had an odd gritty sour taste to it. The cucumber transferred its odors to everything in the container making it taste and smell awful. The beef was overcooked and dry. Whatever the case is, I don't recommend the place for anyone I know. I wish I had known this ahead of time so I wouldn't have recommended my colleagues to order together for lunch. read more

This was my first time ever trying Filipino food in general and I heard great reviews for Filo Cafe so i decided to give it a try! We were greeted politely by the cashier and she kindly explained what options they have available, usually for the combos they pair with rice; I ordered the sweet and sour pampano combo with garlic rice. It was cooked perfectly and paired well with the sweet and sour sauce. I usually like the tail of the fish, however they brought the head instead & it was equally delicious, the steam was still coming out as I was tearing it apart. I love the aesthetic of the cafe, they have a grass wall with LED lights of their cafe restaurant name & a TV playing korean shows I believe. They also gave us a dessert called Turon to make up for the mistakingly serving the fish head instead of the tail & I loved it! I live in the area, and I can't believe it took me this long to try out Filo Cafe. The first thing you notice is how clean and organized this place is. It had a cool vibe, somewhere you can hang out with friends and family. Next, everyone here is so friendly and helpful. Everyone said hi and was polite. I felt very welcomed. They didn't rush you to finish your food and had kdrama on TV, that I watched for a while. It felt like home. The last thing was their amazing flavorful food. I had the Tapsilog. It's a classic Filipino breakfast, and it reminded me of home. It's not pretentious, and it's not a fusion. It is simply Filipino. I appreciated that. The beef was marinated to perfection, and it was cooked in a way that the meat was still tender. They must have marinated the meat for a long time. Love the garlic fried rice. It was nutty and garlicky, and the addition of the tomatoes and cucumber was a nice touch. It brought freshness to a very flavorful, heavy dish. Let's not forget the perfectly cooked eggs! The yolk was so runny - yummy. I had it mixed with my garlic fried rice, and I was suddenly back to my Lola's house. Finally, the dessert! I've never had Carioca. Why haven't I?! This is so delicious. The funny thing is it had the same consistency as those cheese bread in Brazilian restaurant (fogo), I think it had coconut? Which added texture. Oh man... this reminds me of my mum's cooking so much. Especially after my dad had his like 2nd heart attack when I was a kid and mum was trying to make her cooking healthier but still maintain good taste. Like often times filipino cooking is synonymous with greasy and oily, and the argument for it is that "oh that's where the flavor is! It needs to get stuck in your heart valve cause that's love!" No Tito... those chest pains doesn't have to be a good sign of good Filipino cooking. When they say to get to his heart, you need to go through the stomach... it's not that literal! But I digress. This does taste much cleaner and I dunno if it's actually healthy but it doesn't leave me in a food coma after eating. Their longanisa is slightly sweet but far less oily than what I'm used to. Their milk fish is meat and I dunno if they used lemon or calimansi, but the fish skin tastes like bacon. The pancit and lumpia reminds me of those Filipino house party and is the ultimate comfort. Their leche flan (flan or plan?) is soooooooo creamy and not to sweet. Situated next to a Zumba place - you might need to go there afterwards. Lechon is moist with fat crispy skin and a well balanced sauce- not too sweet. Wish it came with something besides just rice, a tomato, and cucumber slice. The entree didn't sit heavy but fixed the lechon craving. Palobok had the fat rice noodle and the crushed chicharon, eggs, and shrimp. Sauce was also just right. Grabbed the Carioca skewers which had a nice crunchy caramel coating with chewy centers. The kids are asking for more. They have a drink fridge with soft rinks and dessert options near the register. Not an extensive menu but has many staples (except bbq skewers sadly).
