So happy to have Ba Le back on the Pike! They offer a lot of menu items they used to sell back in the day along with some more modern additions to the drink options. Although the prices are not the same as they once were, that was 25 years ago. It's a spacious, organized spot that I could see getting packed around lunch time. I ordered a couple of banh mi for pick up for lunch. Ordering online made it super easy to customize my sandwich without feeling like I'm being too complicated. For myself I got the #1 Special. This is the classic cold cut sandwich with 3 types of Vietnamese cuts (ham, head cheese, pork roll) and pate. I opted for all the ingredients plus extra jalapeños. It was delicious! My sandwich was loaded with pate and came with a good layer of meats. The bread is the closest to an actual Saigon style banh mi I have had in this area. It has a crisp shell but is softer in the center so it doesn't cut up the roof of your mouth when you bite down on it. I also like a sprinkle salt & pepper on top of my banh mi veggies so I just added it when I got home. They offer a sandwich and soup combo that I'd like to try next time with a lot of other items. I always try to get a sandwich before a long flight. (And other times not for flying) This time I was going across the country again for work and stopped over for a sandwich before heading to the airport. I really quite like the service, it felt like they cared and made some suggestions that I took them up on. I will say that the grilled pork was a little more salty than I like for it to be. But I was very happy with how generous they are with the vegetables. I tend to stuff my sandwich with vegetables, and I barely finished using all the veggies that they bagged up for me since my flight was a little bit later in the day. The food kept well and it definitely did what it was intended for which was to keep me not starving through the long six hour flight. They had the green pandan cake, which I really love. But it was not as good (flavorful) as the one I had in Vegas at another shop, so slightly disappointed, but it was still decent. Helped to curb the craving for it. I definitely would come back. Their price point is good. Their value is good. They had some other things on the menu that I wouldn't mind trying. People at the airport were looking at my sandwich and asking where they could get one and I had to tell them sadly it's not available at the airport. read more

I am so happy this place opened up!!! Once you walk in, it's bright and clean and spacious. There is plenty of fridge items to take to go, meats, banh mi mayo and pickled toppings, desserts, drinks, fresh coconut, etc. and there is also a hot items section for pastries and egg rolls. The people that work here are super friendly!! I had the number one special banh mi - it was fantastic, the bread is perfectly crunchy on the outside but soft enough to still be enjoyable, the inside was great, a perfectly balanced Banh mi. It's hard to find good banh mi in MD and I am so happy to say, I have found my new go to spot. I also got a soursop smoothie! It was refreshing. I wanted to like this place more. I feel that MoCo could use more bahn mi places... but I dunno how I feel about the bread. It's super soft and absorbent so it soaks up the flavors but I'm more used to having the harder bread. They also have a really good pork and shrimp cake that they kinda use on everything. I mistakenly got the shrimp/pork cake bahn mi, shrimp/pork croissant biscuit, and a giant shrimp/pork meatball. I mean at first I was like this is good... but after awhile I'm like... is this good? Their Vietnamese coffee was also way too strong. It's been three days and I still have not slept... I yearn for the sweet release of death... I no longer wish to be awake... help... read more

Ba Le is a solid choice for Banh Mi if you're in the Rockville area. The pickled veggies had a strong tang--which I actually enjoyed since it added a nice punch of flavor. The pork itself was tasty and they didn't skimp on the portion, which is always appreciated. That said, the sandwich leaned a little dry for my taste and could have benefited from a bit more mayo to balance things out. I also ordered a Vietnamese coffee, which had great flavor but was mostly ice. Next time I will ask for no ice. Got takeout from them on a cold chilly day. Past by this new Vietnamese shop before and been meaning to check them out. I got their lemongrass pork banh mi and added on one of their homemade pastries, blueberry cream cheese danish. Not sure if she was also the owner, but the lady who took my order when I came in was both very helpful and very honest. She introduced all the pastries to me, saying how they're made in-house daily. When asking for a specific recommendation since they all looked good she even honestly helped me rule out the chocolate danish and say she's been wanting the kitchen to add even more chocolate chips than there is right now. Really appreciated that honesty. Even on my way out, she kindly reiterated to stay warm! When I got home I kind of regretted not asking for a side dish of sriracha and hoisin sauce which I usually do. But I was pleasantly surprised by how flavorful the lemongrass pork banh mi already was, didn't end up needing any additional sauces. The croissant was very flakey and the filling wasn't overly sweet, just perfect. Loved this lil shop, will def stop by again when I have chance! read more

Came here for lunch on Black Friday. No one in around 12:30 and we were immediately helped by the person working at the front (they also have computers to order). We ordered 3 banh mi, and a Thai iced tea. I was very impressed with the veg and vegan options and everything is clearly labeled for dietary specifications. While waiting for the sandwiches I browsed around. The place is really open and clean, with one bar and one table seating so would be a good place for a small group to sit there but I had opted to go. After a few minutes the food came out freshly made. The sandwiches were very good! Generous servings of everything and the baguette is also quite big. We will definitely come back! read more

9.29.25 This is a newly opened Vietnamese carryout restaurant that has a few counter seats. The menu is limited with select salad and rice entrees, noodle soups, and sandwiches known as banh mi in Vietnamese, and beverages such as smoothies, coffee, tea, and desserts. Additionally they have prepared foods. I love that they have pre-rolled egg rolls that just need to be fried and premade pork skin that can just be added to make spring rolls at home. I don't cook Vietnamese food because it's time consuming, but happy to know I have options now. I purchased the banh uot (fermented steamed cake that came with pork patties). Unfortunately I misread and thought it was crepes with minced pork inside. I was bummed although the entree was still good. It would have tasted better warmed up. I also purchased an avocado smoothie that is the best I've ever had anywhere to date. Highly recommend. I placed my smoothie order at the counter, but there are also two kiosks. I was excited to check out this new spot! Starting with the bánh mì--the bread didn't taste freshly baked, which was a little disappointing. The pâté was super light, almost like it wasn't there. I don't need a ton of it, but at least enough to taste would've been nice. They also left out one of the key meats you usually get in a "special" bánh mì, which is normally homemade and full of flavor. That said, the overall taste was still good. I liked the pickled daikon and carrot, but for the price, I expected a bit more--especially since they don't offer deals like most bánh mì places (buy 5, get 1 free). My daughter got the pre-packaged rice with pork chop. I tried it and honestly, the pork chop just fell flat--missing that depth of flavor you usually get with that dish. The vibe was a little chaotic when we went--staff were being yelled at, which made the atmosphere kind of hectic. But to be fair, it's only their first few days open, so I'm hoping things will improve with time. I'll definitely give them another shot because I really want to see them succeed! read more

So happy to see a Vietnamese deli in Rockville!! I grew up in SoCal where these were everywhere and have been missing them for years. Their banh mi bread is perfect- crackly and flaky! We got the #1 and were so happy. (Though wish there were pickled carrots and more mayo!) The prepared foods were also impressive- they have spring rolls, rice noodles/vermicelli bowls, and sticky rice desserts. There were multiple fridges with all the luncheon meats (cha lua especially!) and desserts, as well as a self serve fried goodies section (egg rolls, puffs) and croissants for only $2! I went here opening week and wasn't too thrilled with the food. Now that it's been several months, I decided to give it another go here. The banh mi is better now. Still a little pricey but then again, it's about the same as other moco places that sell banh mi. It feels like the portion is slightly bigger than the first one I had here. Yay! Finally a BaLe in MD! I've been missing the baked bread Banh Mi since i moved to MD from Chicago over a decade ago! Very clean facilities and made to order sandwiches what more can you ask for?!Many options to fit many different tastes! I would recommend mostly the sandwiches as this is what they are known for. They do sell the Vietnemes pork loafs in the refrigerated section. I got takeout of the special which is a classic to try. I especially appreciated that they asked if the vegetables should be in the sandwich or on the side when you order takeout, so your sandwiches won't be soggy if you will eat them later! **If you weren't satisfied during your first visit, give the store another try! It's so much different compared to my first visit during the grand opening! I'm so glad I came back - I would have regretted it so much if I hadn't! My favorites are: BBQ pork sandwich, pork patechaux, and the dessert. The Patechaux tasted perfect if you finish it at the store. It's warm, with little crunchy layers! I also enjoyed the atmosphere here, watching the street while enjoying my little treats! The BBQ pork was full of meat; the pickles were perfect, not too sour, and went well with the meat. Lots of veggies balanced the sandwich. The roast pork sandwich, it had a good amount of pork, pate, and veggies. Personally, I prefer a touch of soy sauce on it - it wasn't in roast pork sandwich , but you can ask staff for it. (Soy sauce will make the bread soggy if you don't eat it right away.) The bread is freshly made every day; when they receive the order, they will toast the bread in an oven for few minutes before serving. If you prefer it less crunchy and leas dry, let the staff know so they don't toast it too much. My teeth aren't strong, so I will tell them to toast my sandwiches for a shorter time next time. I believe this is completely adjustable to your liking on next order. For dessert, I ordered the Pink Diamond on the menu - suong sa hot luu: The drink has many toppings made daily, blended with natural creamy coconut milk and isn't too sweet! I can't make this at home because it takes too many ingredients to cook, so it's worth trying this Vietnamese dessert drink. Highly recommended! It's much healthier than boba milk tea. Plus, it comes in a large cup size of around 650ml or 700ml. Overall, I'm glad I came back! I would've missed a great local spot for Vietnamese treats if I'd based the whole quality of a new store on a visit during their grand opening weeks. There's a very limited amount of shops in MoCo that offer banh mi. I usually drive down to Eden Center for my banh mi fix but decided to try out this place. I got their Special (#1) and BBQ Pork (#2). Honestly, they're both pretty good and were generously filled with meat. The vegetables are actually pickled and the bread has a good chew to it (it's not super airy like other places but I prefer this bread.) I think it's a good spot and if you have a craving and don't want to drive down to VA and it's much better than a lot of places in MoCo. Besides the banh mi, I also tried out their Che (it's okay), Thai tea (0/10 do not get), and fried/baked goods like the chaud and spring rolls which I did not like at all, they just taste like barely seasoned pork. I think it's better to stick with just the sandwiches here. Overall, good place for banh mi. read more

I was very excited that a new banh mi restaurant was opening in Rockville. We usually go to Pho Nom Nom which is consistently good and quick. But this place actually has prepared foods including fixings for sandwiches, pastries, ready-made banh bao, noodle dishes, desserts and fried and frozen eggrolls for quick takeout. I got a combination while my husband got a tuna sandwich (don't ask me why). Mine was tasty with the fresh, toasty bread! He wanted more tuna in his. There was a long wait (20-25 minutes) since it was the grand opening. We also grabbed a sea pearl drink, Vietnamese iced coffee, shrimp eggrolls (they were out of the chicken and pork & shrimp ones), black sticky rice and meat with sticky rice. Everything else was good but the coffee had an odd taste (perhaps extra chicory?), even after we were given a substitute. The service was friendly and there are lots of other things we'd like to try so we'll definitely be back but I really hope they do something with the coffee. I really love a good Bahn Mi and I was very excited to have Ba Le opening up close to my home. If anybody is wondering this sandwich shop has no connection to the former Ba Le, which was across the street in Rockville they are completely different places. The current Ba Le is very obviously a franchise and has prepackaged meats, spring rolls, and other fixings available for purchase in their refrigerators. The store is very clean and polished, and has electronic ordering menus, although that system isn't currently working. I ordered a steak Bahn Mi and asked for extra pickled vegetables and jalapeño. As you can see from the picture, the pickled vegetables were cut in an unusual way, in big chunks and it was very difficult to tell whether they had been pickled at all. The steak also was very bland. I'm used to Vietnamese sandwich shops generally having a good deal a flavor which I did not find with the Sandwhich I received. They didn't put the pate, pork roll etc on my sandwich despite asking for everything. The bread, which, is made in house was very good. Ba le has an unusually large number of vegan options, and some nontraditional Sandwhich options, which look very good. They also have some soups available, but the only place you find them in the menu is under a combo section not as individual selections. They also have a large selection of smoothies, macarons and other items for purchase. I'm hoping that these missed steps are simply from opening a new shop, and that they are quality control will improve and start delivering a better product. I believe they have the ability to put out a good product and perhaps that will happen. My concern is with it being a franchise, it may not have the genuine feel and taste of other Vietnamese sandwich shops. read more

Now for the food. We got banh mi đặc biệt, xôi gà, bánh bột lọc, bánh dày and cha cả tôm. The pickled veggies tasted off (not rotten...but just bad)...and overall sandwich just tasted bland. The drinks weren't much better. Vietnamese iced coffee was super bitter, other places use a little bit of condensed milk but this place had nothing. The avocado smoothie also tasted terrible. Super watered down and bland. Even the spring rolls weren't great as the skin easily broke apart after dipping into the sauce. I had to get a fork to finish it. I love banh mis and was very excited to try this place. Store is very clean. I bought the beef and the grilled pork banh mi. Sandwiches were really Fresh. The pickled vegetables were very good. The meat to bread to topping ratio could be better. There was very little meat in the sandwich especially the beef one. Their sandwiches are all around 10.00, it is pricey for what you get. I am not Vietnamese so I have to idea what an authentic banh mi should taste like but I would the other ones a try like the special or the pork roll one. This is my second time here and I think they improved by a lot. I ordered the #1 dac biet sandwich and felt it was really balanced with good amount of meat and just enough pickled veggies. First time I had the sandwich the pickled veggies it was too sour/pickled but this second time seems like they solved that issue. You go to an American sandwich shop and their sandwiches are $14-$17 and no one bats an eye. I would choose a banh mi over an American or Jewish deli sandwich shop any day. Banh mi shops deserve to be in the $14-$17 price range. I saw you can buy the viet baguettes there so I might pick that up along with pate and egg sauce just to assemble it at home. We went there last week during evening time. They had a couple of people waiting for their food. I read some reviews that the wait time for the food can take awhile. We got chicken and beef banh mi along with some chicken spring rolls. We ate the spring rolls while waiting for the banh mi. They were so dry and don't have good flavoring. They don't have any sauce to dip in either so they were not good. It took about 20 mins or so to get our banh mi. The bread itself was not good. It was hard. I'm comparing this to banh mi oi in Eden center. The chicken one was dry as well. Meat to pickled veggies ratio was disproportionate. Also, only two slices of jalapeño pepper in the whole sandwich. It was very disappointing. It got so dry that we asked if they have some sriracha. Now onto the beef banh mi, it was stir fry beef and they put the onion from the stir fry in the banh mi. That threw the flavor off and also there wasn't a lot of beef. The beef banh mi was so oily from the stir fry. Again, there were so much more pickled veggies than meat. We were so disappointed. Sadly to report that all sandwiches tasted dry, not much flavor, the quality of the meat inside the sandwiches really needs improvement, and the sandwiches even lack of mayonnaise. Seriously! Saw it just opened, thought I'd try it out. Shop is very clean. Everything looked great but that's the thing. It only looked good. They have an issue with freshness. The tapioca with the ham is hard as a rock when it should be chewy. The sandwich is very small for what they charge and they are heavy with the soy sauce.
