The first time I tried this restaurant was on opening weekend so my expectations were realistic. It was my birthday and I was so excited to try this new restaurant in town. I knew that it may not run as smoothly as it would had it been opened longer but I didn't care. I was long awaiting it's opening and was so excited that it opened just in time for my birthday. We had an 8:00pm reservation and we waited for one hour before being seated. I could tell from the moment I walked in that the hostess was overwhelmed. She was totally unfriendly and at times rude - she could not handle the pressure. There were two hostesses and you could tell that she was the more experienced one of the two and yet she was the one who could not handle the stress. Our waitress was great, she was quite friendly, and attentive to our requests. Food came out of the kitchen VERY SLOWLY. We ordered the tuna tartar (it was good) and the octopus dish (totally mediocre) as appetizers. I ordered the grilled sword fish as my entree and the fish was totally dry. Even though my first experience here was quite disappointing, I gave it another try. I waited three weeks and again returned. I was truly hoping things had gotten better. My first impressions on my second go around...The hostess was still looking stressed and overwhelmed. The waiter was fantastic, personable, professional, and on top of our every need. The food... the appetizers were again mediocre. I order the wood grilled scallops as my entree and they were totally undercooked and in my opinion inedible. It is my opinion that this restaurant needs a new chef ... one that can actually cook fish and present the food in a more sophisticated manner especially for the prices they are charging. read more

We went to Fin in Summit for the first time today. It is under different ownership than the one in Montclair. The one in Montclair has been going downhill over the last year or so. The owners have been focusing on the Crosby next door, and the quality of the food has suffered. A few people have recommended the one in Summit, and I'm glad they did. The 2 restaurants have similar menus, but the execution and service is much better at Summit (like it used to be at Montclair). The owner Brian greeted us and was very nice. I can see that he has a lot of pride in his restaurant. Our server Ron was funny and entertaining. We shared a couple of appetizers of swordfish tacos with guajillo marinade, pineapple pico de gallo, radish, and avocado cream, and Asian shrimp bao buns with sweet Asian chili sauce, pickled onions, and chili peppers. For entrees I had the bronzed Atlantic swordfish, with avocado, cucumber, tomato, onion, lump crabmeat, with a cilantro lime vinaigrette. Mrs. P had the 7 spiced big eye tuna, soba noodles, stir fried vegetables, in a soy and scallion vinaigrette. Pros: I can walk to this restaurant from my house in Summit. Space is very pretty. Tuna tartare was excellent w/ micro greens and avocado, as was the delicious flourless carrot cake for dessert. Our server Joe (from Upstairs in Montclair), knowledgeable and nice! Cons: The rest of the food. Awful mushy cod in a soupy bean and "complimentary" escarole (it says that on the menu). The octopus w/ panzanella was odd, not hot, and little marshmallows on the salad? (they were tiny mozzarella pearls). Pricey for a BYOB, $24-$32. per entree. It was $120 per couple. I REALLY want to like this place, because it's local, but they need to step up their game. They also have "thym chicken" on the menu. (who's Tim?). Had dinner here on a Friday evening with another couple. I had one bottle of wine in hand, and the greeter offered to carry it to my table for me, which was five steps away. I said, "I've got it", but she practically insisted, which was not only silly, but pretentious. As others have said, the place is noisy, and you have to yell to carry on a conversation across the table. The service was fine, although there is no salt and pepper on the table, and my NE clam chowder was bland and needed seasoning. It was gloppy, and did not have many clams in it, either. My seafood pasta was good, although the portion size was more like an app than an entrée. My wife had the pesto-stuffed swordfish which was good, and a more substantial portion. Our friends enjoyed their food, including the octopus. The gluten-free carrot cake with hazelnut gelato was also enjoyable. Because there was a large crowd waiting to be seated at 8:30 PM, the hostess asked us to leave about five minutes after we had settled our bill. A very disappointing meal. I ordered the octopus for appetizer over cooked. I order a piece of grilled fish and it comes with escarole and beans. They plopped the fish on the sloppy mess of escarole and beans. I asked for another plate for the fish. The escarole and beans had a funky herb flavor, too much oregano or bay leaf or something; just very strange. I also ordered the shrimp Thai rice. What can I say pineapple in it and hardly any shrimp and the shrimp was very very small. See picture attached. It was ridiculous for the price. ORIGINALLY I WROTE THIS REVIEW BEFORE I WAS DONE EATING. I PUT THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT (Service was only saving grace but with a horrendous meal it did not help.). But I need to strike that statement. Why do you say? Very fresh raw bar but ALL the rest of the food was absolutely terrible. Fish and chips no better than TFI Fridays. Pasta dish boiled and then not drained completely before being plated - this resulted in an unintentional watery "broth" at the bottom and nothing else but some mushrooms on top. Perhaps the "chef" forgot about the truffle butter and other accoutrements. BLAND. The server was very gracious and had another dish out almost immediately, so thanks! Garlic rosemary chips sounded delicious but came out grossly under cooked with no trace of any flavor. Fries should be at least slightly crispy and not resemble limp asparagus. Again, BLAND. Short rib dish was the most flavorful, but no where near what a braised short rib dish should taste like. All in all, it seems to me as if the chef is terrified 2 things: overcooking with the deep fryer, and adding the appropriate amount of seasoning to the food cooked. And this is coming from a reviewer who likes food on the lightly-seasoned side! 1.5 stars - 2 overall, but 1 considering the price. read more

Fin is newly-opened in Summit (as of October), and my wife and I hadn't gone to the previous location where we were (Montclair). We decided to give this spot a shot, as we had a hankering for some oysters and wine. It's in an awesome location - right in downtown Summit and a few minutes away from us. Really cool vibe and decor inside - casual but formal at the same time. The place has a ton of seating, but some of the seats are pretty close together. We had a sandwich of two couples to the left and right of us, both of which could have their conversations heard easily by us. And vice versa. Kind of a mood-killer, but it's not too bad. If you have a booth, you're fine. The dozen oysters we got were really good: we opted for the mix of West and East coast oysters. The vinaigrette Minuit was fantastic - textured a bit chunky and chilled, it's an awesome substitute for the classic, liquid vinaigrette we were used to. I also enjoyed the cocktail sauce for a few of my oysters. Another smaller downside is the price: for a dozen, depending on which oysters you get, expect to spend $2.50-$3.00 per oyster. Good rule of thumb. It's also BYOB, which is nice, as we brought our own Sauvignon Blanc to enjoy. read more

Well, I really wanted to love this place because I do love their other restaurant, Saluté, in Montclair. Unfortunately the octopus was quite over-charred, and for a seafood restaurant, this was disturbing. The tuna appetizer was truly delicious, the Mac and cheese was just "meh." Much smaller than the Montclair location, which isn't a huge problem, but the seating is a little tight. This fact makes private conversation almost impossible, but by no means is it difficult to hear due to noise concerns. It's just not the most intimate of settings. Like Montclair, it's in Summit where the same parking difficulties exist. If you have a reservation, I'd suggest showing up a little early to find parking, though that's not fault of the restaurant. We found the staff to be polite, friendly and attentive. The food was fresh and creative. Of the highlights, the Octopus appetizer is on the money. Cooked just right without a hint of chewiness or toughness, with a nice hint of a citrus dressing. They also served a shrimp and scallop dish that was similar in flavor to a ceviche. They had run out of shrimp of all things, but they made up for it by adding more scallop. Served with a light salad, this dish was another winner. One of the negatives was our table right near the entrance. They'd be wise to invest in some type of removable outer door area that could help a bit with the outside weather. They've put up a curtain which is somewhat helpful, but you still feel the chill when that door opens! The prices were not unreasonable, though a touch high. 2 apps, 2 entrees, no dessert with a side of brussels ran about $110. Keep in mind, that's a BYO. read more

Stopped in for dinner during the week. Pretty quite so easy to pick a table. We order some appetizers, the cauliflower and beet salad. Both were so delicious and great plates to share with the table. Cauliflower was just enough spice and very fresh. We then had the swordfish wish was amazing and orange roughy which was another great choice. Went to Fin for the first time on a cold Friday night. Overall the restaurant was outstanding. We had a reservation for 8 people, and they were very courteous and accommodating when we had to change the time to accommodate problems with NJ Transit. For appetizers I had the crab cakes, and sampled the Thai fried rice and the lobster mac and cheese. After college in Annapolis I have very high standards for anything crab-related, and these were a solid 8/10. That said, the Thai fried rice was what I kept coming back to. The prefect combination of shrimp, soy, and pineapple almost made me forget my entree was still on the way. My main course was market sea scallops over white beans and spinach. I also sampled the Atlantic swordfish which was out of this world. Our service was very good, and I definitely look forward to coming back to try more of the salmon and tuna next time. This was my first visit to fin, however my parents had been there a few times before and have always had a wonderful dining experience. It's loud and that's the main reason it's only four stars, especially since the acoustics can easily be fixed. Other than that, it was a pretty great experience. We had to order our appetizers and entrées at the same time, so it took us a while to know what we wanted. I genuinely wanted everything on the menu. The waiters were very kind and helpful, especially the one that helped us choose what oysters to get. The food was amazing. The oysters were amazing and so fresh. Everything is incredibly fresh and it's so obvious upon tasting. I had the edamame dumplings to start which were REALLY good. The broth around the dumplings was so flavorful and it made what could be tasteless (edamame) into something amazing. The fried calamari was unbelievable. I've never had calamari so fresh and light, by far the best I've ever had. My sister got the charred octopus, which she didn't really like because she didn't like how charred it was. I tasted it and loved it. I made fun of her a bit because it was obvious that on the menu it says CHARRED. it has a really nice smoky flavor, though, and is really nice because they achieved that flavor without burning the octopus or anything. We all loved our entrées. Again, everything is SO incredibly fresh. As people who have summered in Maine for decades (essentially since my dad was a kid) we know fresh seafood when we taste it. And I can't overemphasize how fresh our food was. My mom got the cod which I tasted and thought it was really good. My dad got a pesto, shrimp, and pasta dish which was also really good (I wish I could give you the exact names of the dishes but I don't remember). I got a pasta dish with lobster, crab, and shrimp and it was amazing. The pasta is all homemade so it tastes fresh and flavorful. The lobster was really good (again, I grew up on Maine lobster that was living in the ocean hours before it became my meal). Overall, it was an amazing meal. I highly recommend fin. P.S. A note on the noise level: it was bearable. That might mean something coming from me considering I'm pretty ADD and loud noise is something that can be unbearable. It was bad at first, but as the meal progressed it kind of became nothing more than a nuisance. The noise level should most definitely not be a reason to keep you from dining here. If you can, try and request a table in the very front, the noise level isn't as bad. read more

NOISY...LOUD...NO ACOUSTICS! Others have also noted this.. This is reminiscent of the Italian restaurant that was in this location before. Their food was pretty good but the noise level kept me from coming back. Don't know much about acoustics, but I think it's the tin ceiling tiles. I also think the food here is pretty good but because of the noise, it made it difficult to get the most out of the meal. It appears they want to treat the place with a party like atmosphere more than a restaurant. So, again, unfortunately, I probably will not be returning because of this. As for the food, the Shanghai prepared lobster and shrimp was pretty tasty, Seared scallops were also good as were the mussels. Nice selection of oysters. I rated one star because I was unable to select zero. I am a first time yelper and this experience was enough to make me sign up and spend my time on this review. My wife and I, along with four friends, made reservations at Fin three or so weeks ago and had been looking forward to a night out without the kids for some fun in town. Saturday night, 6:30pm reservations. We arrive on time and are seated at a table for four people. Since it didn't dawn on the hostess or waitstaff that we were obviously going to be all jammed up at the table one of us went to hostess and brought the problem to her attention. Back to the waiting area (small). They told us it would be at least a half hour more. We assume they had a larger party than us come in and that they gave our table away, or perhaps they have inexperienced staff or they have no idea how to manage their reservations. I was embarrassed for them because they don't know how to treat people. Interesting to point out that upon our arrival we noticed a party of two and a party of four leave the restaurant prior to being seated, obviously put-out at the wait/treatment. So, one of us walked over to Fiorino's directly across the seat, pointed out our frustration and after a minute or two of shuffling things around we were able to walk across the street and rescue this night that started out on the wrong foot. We were welcomed with open arms by the wonderful staff at Fiorino's and we had a great meal. Unfortunately, we have no idea how the food was at Fin, nor will we probably bother to find out. If I'm going out to spend a few hundred bucks on dinner, drinks, babysitter, etc, I do not want to be part of the customer group that is training the staff. Went for the first time this past Saturday night with another couple. Everyone really enjoyed the food, meaning apps and entrees. None of us had desserts. The service was also good and friendly. The only issue is a really big one. Upon entering, it was immediately obvious that the noise level was high. It was intolerable. The husbands one one side of the table couldn't converse with the women. (Some may think that's a strength, not a weakness. It was bad). I personally, couldn't hear the specials. My Asian-glazed salmon was OK but I have had better at nearby similarly-priced restaurants -- the skin was not sizzly and a little crunchy the way it should be, and the salmon itself was slightly mushy. Overly sweet and heavy sauce on average rice was a so-so companion to the fish on my plate. My wife's chicken looked like Costco-sourced pre-formed breasts (both pieces were exactly the same shape ... either a one-in-a-million circumstance or they were frozen and from a restaurant supply shop ...). If I could give 0 stars I would. I have never written a review before but, feel I am obligated to in this case. I am a seafood junkie and chase food and travel far and wide for a good meal and have no problem paying premium prices for a great dinner. We went to FIN for dinner. To give you context I will tell you what we ordered. We had a dozen oysters, they were subpar. Pieces of shell - not cool but we picked out the pieces, the mignonette was frozen and crunchy. We asked about it and they said "it's how they do it." That part was a bit strange. We had tuna tartar - it was good. We had the seafood spring rolls. Well they were soggy with no flavor and for the $ they could spare a few more then 2 pieces only if they made them crunchy (that may have helped). We ordered The grilled branzino for dinner-this is my absolute favorite fish of all time and I order it at many places. At FIN it was disgusting I received a plate with just the fish, no seasoning, no garnish, nothing- just the fish on a plate it was over cooked to a point of being hard, dry, and smelled SUPER Fishy. I had maybe 3 bites (after asking for salt and pepper it did not help at all) and I just could not eat it. When I say it was gross- it really was. They brought a side of beans and greens all mashed together- I took one bite and it was also cold and absolutely offensive at how it tasted, had it been hot it may have tasted good but, it wasn't and it was terrible. We also had the scallops from the specials. The corn relish was good that came with it- at least it looked like a real meal, the scallops were flavorless and spongy. My husband loves scallops and he left 2 of the 4 behind- this never happens!!! Then we got the bill!!!! Ok, remember I have no issue paying for good food! The bill was $183.00 at a BYO and this blew my mind with what we received. So with a $40.00 tip we spent well over $200.00 and had the absolute worst meal ever!!! I will never go there again!!! Happy to have this place open in summit! We tried this spot out in Montclair and I have to say the summit place was even better, we really enjoyed the meal! Walked in on a Friday night we didn't have a reservation but they found a spot for us at the bar. Started out with the short ribs bao buns and they were awesome! I then had the grilled shrimp, they were plain but very tasty and well seasoned and the bean escarole side was really good. My husband got the tuna and Raved about it! I got a side of the Mac and cheese and this was the only negative - it really was not good at all and did not have much lobster especially for the high price. I barely ate 3 bites of it and as such I feel the server should have asked if something was wrong and even possibly offered to take it off the bill. This place is a nice date spot or a dinner night with your girlfriends. It's byob so make sure to bring your wine. We had some east and west Side oysters and I couldn't decide which I liked more. Our waiter was very informative and taught me how to differentiate oysters based on location. (Now I am an Oyster expert! Haha) From the appetizer menu I recommend the octopus salad and tuna tartar. I came here because I love the location in Montclair, so I wanted to try it out. The food selection is excellent and staff are courteous. I would have rated higher but the oysters were not cleaned properly. The pasta with lobster, shrimp and crab meat was amazing & the gluten free carrot cake is hands up one of the best. They do not have outdoor seating like in Montclair but the place is big. The only downside is that it can get very loud when packed and you can't hear the waiters/waitresses when they are speaking. The upside is they prepare the food fresh and it's It's BYOB. read more

Our dining experience was not great and our perception probably would have been different had the manager and the waitstaff made an effort to fix the situation. Our dinners were hit or miss with nothing really standing out. Out of everything we ate the crab cakes were the best. we also ordered the Thai shrimp fried rice (not recommenced) and the fried calamari salad which was good. My husband ordered the fresh pasta with lobster and crab and it was completely inedible. The pasta had been so over cooked that it was mushy to the touch! We called our waiter over to explain the issue and to order something else. He was nice about it but he kept saying "sorry you didn't like it" when in actuality it was a cooking error not a personal preference. The restaurant was busy, so they offered us a seat at the "raw bar". The so-called raw bar was bar seating overlooking a dingy, exposed part of the kitchen with not one crustacean in sight. Kitchen staff were shucking oysters in this area, but below our sight line. The rest of the staff were drying dishes, filling waters, cutting avocados for salad garnish, and finishing desserts with Smucker products ~ yes, the bottles were in plain sight. I could forgive all the aforementioned if my fish was of a superior quality, however, it came out mushy as if it had been frozen. Overall, a very disappointing experience. read more

Fin is excellent in every aspect of what a great restaurant should be. Very cool vibe and atmosphere. The menus light up! Waitstaff is great. The owner, Brian is a super nice man. We had the crab cocktail, spring rolls, oysters, and then wood grilled Bronzini, salmon, escarole and beans and coconut Basmati rice. Every single thing was excellent. If half stars were an option, I'd give Fin a 3.5. This 4 star rating is slightly generous, but is also relative to the local restaurant competition. Also, I should note that I have only eaten there once. Overall, our food was decent. Our appetizers were good - we got the crab and avocado salad (not sure it's worth $11, but it was good) and the shrimp cocktail (boring, I know, but this was a good one). Our entrees were just ok - I had the cod and the broth was way too sweet - my husband had the lobster & shrimp, which he said was fine, but not impressive. For dessert we got the walnut bread pudding and loved it. Beyond that, our waiter was lovely. The ambiance is fun and energetic. There is no liquor license, but BYOB has its own appeal. They also have a deal with the local liquor store, where someone will bring you a bottle from there - so if drinking is a must, you can make that happen. We saw someone who brought in a vodka soda! Anyway, we will probably go back as it is a solid choice in the downtown Summit scene, but this is certainly not a destination. read more

I was expecting much more. The prices were very high for the portions and quality of the food. We sat in a nice quiet corner only to discover a woman in the corner next to us who thought she was so special because she is a regular. She decided to scream over our table to talk to the owner the entire night. The behavior included finger pointing over my head. Service was good, but watch your credit card. I was overcharged a small amount. I called because of the disruptive experience. No one called me back. read more

The best place to eat in summit! The food is delicious! The seven spiced big eye tuna is amazing, and they always have great specials as well. My husband and I come here every few months and the staff always recognize us and treat us wonderfully.
