When I woke up in the morning I had a feeling that I'd be in the mood for some barbecue later in the day, and then sure enough later in the day I did feel that same feeling. I took my 2 teenage sons and proceeded to head towards Fink's, which is located conveniently just north of downtown Suffern. It is a bit of a walk from the train station but do-able if it's not raining. I had been to Fink's before in Dumont NJ and the food was delicious. We made sure to get there just after 5:30pm, which is the demarcation for whether or not you are going to be able to order the brisket. This timing is critical. If you arrive too early, you're not going to be able to order because they are not going to have it ready. But if you arrive too late, you run the risk of them being sold out. We were seated promptly and had an outstanding waiter, who really catered to our special needs. There were plenty of wet-naps. My sons cleared their plates briskly. I had the brisket and upgraded to the platter. I tried the brussel sprouts and carrots and can highly recommend them. Another reviewer cited that the carrots were "over-sauced". What are they, some kind of carrot connoisseur??? We'll come back again but are hesitant to park on the top level because it requires ascending a steep severe slope and maneuvering in a tight platform. The food was so overcooked it wasn't even funny. When I told the chef (David) it was over cooked he laughed at me before telling me "you don't know s***". Apparently I don't have the right to criticize food if I've never been a cook before, although I've been eating my whole life. The dining area was also disgusting and I observed a few roaches scurrying around. I will absolutely NOT return to this restaurant. I am so grateful to the staff at Fink's for making possible an outdoor birthday gathering for a group of 14. They lined up three picnic tables with umbrellas for us. My guests were a bit overwhelmed by the enormous menu -- so many interesting choices! There were also many options available for the vegetarian in our party. Our server was attentive and helpful. Ventured out this evening and heading to Finks/Suffern. A safe seating environment and a couple of cold beers started us off. Prompt service brought us our soup which as a gumbo loaded with pork and seasoned just right along with their excellent lobster bisque. Boring..... we both had their yesterday's brisket sandwich one w chips and the other with salad. A tangy and sweet sauce rounded things out. We complimented the manager on both service and food. Very friendly people there for sure. He shared with us that Fink the owner was there with his family. Mr. Fink..... a young man who's become "a true barbecue legend"'stopped by our table later to chat. A great and fun conversation. Don't be fooled by highway barbecue. I never ever leave reviews but I have to for this one. I normally LOVE finks and the service. Me and two friends sat at a high top by the bar. For starters we order our drinks and he brings the wrong drinks. Then we order appetizers after 30 minutes of waiting for him to come up to us (it wasn't that busy by the bar at all he was standing around). The food comes, I ask him if I could get ranch instead of blue cheese and he says a rude comment about how I have to make him walk all the way back up to the kitchen and I shouldn't do that to bartenders. We all needed refills and wanted to order some other food but he didn't come up to us for 40 MINUTES. After never getting my water and enjoying the only redeeming quality of the night, the food, we had to go to to the bar ourselves to ask for the check and go back to to the bar to pay it because he never came back. We left a $5 tip on a $79 bill (and in my opinion that was too much) and within 10 seconds of leaving he ran out after us. Can you believe it?! The most attentive he was to our table the whole night! He had the nerve to say "am I missing something? there's only $5". We just calmly explained how unpleasant the evening was and he said "we were wrong" and told us take the money back because he doesn't want it. You would think this is the end but I embarrassingly left my jacket and went back in 10 minutes later. I spot my jacket on the floor behind the bar. Let me repeat that, I find my jacket on the FLOOR behind the bar. As I say "sorry I left my ja-" he throws it at me and doesn't say a word. Such a terrible experience for what's normally such a great place. The food here is truly amazing and it's such a shame to not feel comfortable to go back. Any of you going on a Sunday evening avoid the high tops and the bartender who's name on the receipt is Seeeth. Found this place by mistake but glad I did. Even before 5 on a Saturday it was crowded with families. The food is excellent and the prices are fair. The brisket is excellent as are the burgers and short ribs. The service is ok but could improve a bit. read more

As a fan of bbq and someone who is very familiar with using a smoker I had to try this place..Staff wasn't overly great but Sammie our server was. I was told that they didn't have brisket today but they had yesterdays brisket with some side dishes thrown in for the same price. If you know meat you know that when you cut into brisket the meat oxidizes and loses it's moisture. Hard pass and a terrible model to take advantage of unknowing customers. We opted for the cheese steak sandwiches that were the furthest thing from a cheese steak I have ever seen. There was hardly and meat and almost no onions or peppers on the sandwich. This wouldn't be a problem for someone trying their hand at a cheesesteak but when it's in the name of your place and you charge 13 and change for a bun it is. Do yourself a favor and skip this spot next time you're thinking BBQ. Won't be going back. read more

So glad we came here for dinner last night! I don't give 5 stars away easily. The food was really delicious. I had the pulled pork as a platter with corn soufflé and greens. The corn soufflé is really yummy. My boyfriend had a special yesterday's brisket sandwich because the regular brisket was sold out. He said he liked mine better but it was still ok. He had the Texas potato salad others have mentioned and I didn't think I would like it but I kept eating his! Also our server was very accommodating. This hidden gem in Suffern has some smokin food. Took my Dad for his birthday last night because he loves BBQ and he really enjoyed his plate of ribs! The owner came by to check in us during our meal and that gave them 5 stars! There was a great menu, so much to choose from! The shrimp appetizer was to die for geesh, as it was sitting on top of some type of flavored cornmeal. The duck!!! Forget it, i was so pleased beyond words! There is no mac & cheese listed on the menu as a side dish??? A bar-be-que joint with no mac & cheese???? That's a first. I'll admit I didn't ask about it. By the time I had to track the "waitress" down and get her off her cell phone I was already annoyed so I forgot to ask. I was also annoyed because I asked if they had burnt ends and got a blank look. A waitress in a bar-be-que place doesn't know what that is? And a menu that doesn't include it. AND.....kale instead of collard greens??? Seriously? Kale??? Several items on the menu are not available until after 5:30pm. Ok. So......Pork chops were over cooked and tough. They came with.......potato salad......very processed with no nice chunks of potato.....kale with an over abundance of hot spices so you couldn't taste the greens. Ordered an extra side.....corn soufflé......fairly tasteless. After I told Miss Cell Phone I was looking at the menu for take out she disappeared....as stated, had to go looking for her. She had her face in her phone and had obviously not given me another thought. She got the order wrong and it came back with just pork chops and the corn. I never told her to make a substitute. I ordered the pork chops, which come with potato salad and kale and told her I *also* wanted the corn. Another waitress (from the bar) finally brought the order and had to go back and get the potato salad and kale. My girlfriend and I originally came to Finks for the Suffern halloween bar crawl, and the cheesesteaks are out of this world. On our most recent visit yesterday I decided to try the pulled turkey and it did not disappoint. Theres nothing like authentic, slow cooked bbq with a nice side of slaw and their house made bbq potato chips. The prices are reasonable and the plate was clean within minutes. The staff was very kind, and did not rush us out after we were done. We'll definitely be back EDITED 4/22: So we came back and it was awful. The waitress came to the table once for water, once to take our order and then disappeared for about 20 minutes. We sat without water for about 15 minutes after we drank our first glasses. We were in a rush and let them know, but it didnt seem to matter. Our food took almost 40 minutes to come out, and when it did come out the chips came with no seasoning (which they are supposed to), and a 3 inch bone was in the pulled turkey. Could have easily choked on it. We got a to go order and another bone was found in that was well. Don't really plan on going back. read more

Heard very good things about this place, so we decided to drive here from Brewster, NY. First impression was good but once seated things just felt wrong. The staff had a horrible attitude. We were a party of 8. Four meals came out first and after a reminder to a waiter that happened to be walking by, the rest of the 4 meals came out approximately 25 minutes later, still incomplete. Pretty tough finding decent BBQ place in Rockland and I can say I finally found a good one. I do a lot of traveling and one of the perks is getting to eat at some great restaurants around the world and I have eaten some really good BBQ. OK, Fink's isn't as good as the Salt Lick in Austin, but it's pretty good. For appetizers, we ordered the spicy smoked wings and these great egg rolls stuffed with Mac and cheese and BBQ. The smoke came thru on the wings and were delicious. Our waiter, Scott was very attentive and gave us nothing but great recommendations for our main course. Between the pulled pork, pork belly, ribs and brisket we all were induced into a meat coma. Between 4 people, we still had leftovers and had absolutely no room for desert. No BRISKET until after 5:30 each day. This is why I go for bbq. :( Place looks very poor from the outside. Dirty vinyl siding (from being close to road?) and bed sheet tacked up in large 2nd floor appartment window. Since I recommended this place to our large group, I felt extremely uncomfortable walking in from car. Inside is another story. Very well decorated and clean. Nice, whew! Had a large group. We called ahead and they had a table waiting. Drinks took a real long time and food even longer. But with a large group you have to make concessions... the place was empty except for our group of 19 though? Service was friendly. Remember what you ordered though, because that's how it's served. "Burger with fries?" Most enjoyed their meals. Wings were 50 cents (every Wed), but smoked wings just don't do it for me... glad I didn't get them. Wife had the Texas Lollipops as an appetizer. Delish, but VERY SMALL portion for $10 (one brat chunked up, wrapped in bacon, cooked & dipped in bbq sauce). My daughter's chicken was very dry and was not served with any sauce. There was also no sauce on table, only ketchup. I had the triple club, which was good, but tasted like an American mixed sub with bacon and liquid smoke. Nothing special. Surprisingly hidden gem of suffern, I don't know why this place isn't hyped up to the degree it deserves! Every dish we've tried (quite a few..) has been outstanding - the chicken was my favorite but honestly we haven't had anything that wasn't delicious.
