To start, we ordered a bowl of yesterday's soup special (She crab) and a small order of boiled shrimp. The soup was excellent, creamy, and with small pieces of crab throughout. The shrimp (six in the small order) were prepared well and came with a tangy cocktail sauce. The server brought over a loaf of their complimentary bread, which is actually three breads together in a single loaf. The bread was good (I preferred the dark loaf part) and came with a peach butter. We were told that the butters change periodically. The butter had pieces of peach in it (!) and we enjoyed the novelty. Our server mentioned that they also have a pistachio butter and maple butter. Yum. I ordered a salad with the balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side. The salad itself was good - fresh, with crisp lettuce, tomato, cucumber, apple, almond pieces, etc. Then there was the dressing. Although I mixed the salad dressing in the cup before tasting it, when I did taste it, it was almost all oil with no discernible vinegar or other flavor. I kept stirring and tasting and nothing. So I abandoned the dressing. For entrees, my partner ordered the charbroiled salmon in herb butter with a side of broccoli. The salmon was prepared well and very tasty. I ordered the mahi-mahi, with the sun-dried tomato butter sauce on the side. The mahi-mahi was well prepared and tasty on its own. Honestly, I tasted the sun-dried tomato butter sauce and it was essentially whipped butter. I didn't think it added anything to the entree so I didn't use it. The potato came with butter and sour cream on the side. The potato was very good. Although we were full and not planning on dessert, the server came over with small cups of peppermint ice cream, calling it a "palate cleanser." It was very good and a nice touch. Other than the salad dressing and the sauce for the fish, it was an excellent meal in a nice atmosphere with good service. When we were leaving at around 7:00 pm, the line was out the door.

For the main course I ordered the flat iron steak. Because I was traveling and didn't want leftovers, I asked the server for a smaller portion than listed, but either I wasn't clear or it wasn't an option--It's okay, though. I ordered the steak medium rare but it was a shade above rare; again, okay. Sides were good but I added salt. The meal was a bit pricey but probably fair given that it was sourced locally. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the chef is heavy handed on the sauces, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. Oh, I ordered the pinot noir and it was good, smooth, balanced. The cocktail and mocktails were flavorful and well priced. Our waiter was great. Very knowledgeable about the menu, town and ingredients. We started with the Chicken Liver pate. This was well prepared, although I hate when a restaurant provides an odd number of toasts for two people. We asked for an extra piece and thought it was funny that they gave us exactly one. FYI- it comes with several accoutrements which were tasty, but the mustard was really the most satisfying. My wife had the brisket, which I would call a must have. Fantastic Asian spices, fried rice ball and Kimchi. Just an explosion of flavors. I was glad she shared. (This is uncommon) I had the pork chop and it was really pretty. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor and I had to carve off the fat which made up about 1/3rd of the chop. The bone was the other third...so it turned out to be a thick but modest cut. That said, it was on a lovely bed of mash and some of the best blue and white carrots I ever had. We finished with the carrot cake. (All of the desserts are made onsite.) which we learned was gluten free. Honestly if it was marked GF I wouldn't have ordered it. Anyway, when it arrived I thought we received the wrong thing. It looked like a decorative cliff bar. Once we took a bite we were blown away by the flavors and texture. It was delicious. Such a great experience. We were near the kitchen, so we got to see the head chef get orders out. There were some highs and lows, but the overall experience was really nice.

I've had too many frustrating experiences for too long, and better alternatives are as close as a dozen steps away at Reunion, By And By, Magdalena's, and Staunton Bagel. Long version: I've been a Cranberry's customer for many years and have had consistently bad service at their kitchen. I could tell a half-dozen stories, but my most recent encounter illustrates the longstanding themes. I came in for some household items and my son asked for a matcha latte, so I decided to order myself a mocha too. I stood at the ordering counter for several minutes watching two people in the back of the kitchen gossip and ignore me. I was the only customer there; they had nothing else to do. Finally one of them came to the front; the other remained behind the divider doing nothing as far as I could see. I asked for the matcha and mocha, and tried to pay but their card reader wouldn't connect, so it took several more minutes for them to complete the sale. A minute or two later I got the text from my bank at 7:47 AM. Then the waiting began; now there were three people in the kitchen, still with no other customers. One or two other people did came in, but they just got self-serve cups, so the kitchen didn't need to do anything for them. Only one person worked on my order, and it was a study in leisureliness and inefficiency, with many slow trips across the kitchen for one thing or another. Finally, at 8:01 AM, the matcha was handed across the counter with an apology for the wait. I took the matcha to my son and returned to wait for my mocha, and then realized that I probably needed to ask for it. The person looked again at my ticket and said "oh yeah," and made the mocha. At 8:03, after a 20-minute wait while three people had nothing else to do, I finally had my drink. This example is essentially similar to many other experiences I've had there, and now in addition to being grouchy at them, I'm feeling like it's my own fault. I should have known better; I should have just waited till 8:00 when Reunion opened and gotten the drinks there. It would have taken the same amount of time and been a lot less irritating. In any other decently run kitchen, they'd have started making the drinks before the terminal malfunctions were sorted out. At Reunion or By & By less than a minute's walk away, or Magdalena or Staunton Bagels a couple blocks away, they go above and beyond for you. They will get started as soon as they know what you want and they're quick. I'm getting food and drinks elsewhere in the future; I'm done being mad at myself for giving Cranberry's more chances.
