This place is definitely a little gem hidden in broad ripple. We went there for dinner last night and it was amazing! If you get a chance to try the fried pickles, I would! We went in on a Friday evening without a reservation. We had a short wait in the bar (with a very nice Old Fashioned and glass of wine). The place is pretty small and cozy. The Beer Cheese Dip and Chicken Tortilla soup were very good. The special was a sirloin steak with mushrooms and onions served on a sizzling platter. It was serviceable at best. A bit underdone, I found that the mound of partially grilled onions overpowered the mushrooms. Service was good enough to get them a second chance. read more

I've been to Fire By the Monon twice now and both times I got the pork nachos. Probably the best nachos I've ever had. I am sure there are other delicious items to get but this girl loves herself some nachos. I love how they aren't just a heaping pile of soggy chips they are individual big tortilla chips piled high with shredded pork and cheese. Loveeee them. We came here on a Friday, around 11:00 a.m., we were the first couple in the door. We were greeted and seated right away.Had a fantastic and extremely accommodating waiter named David.On his recommendation we ordered the black bean soup which was 'hands down' the BEST black bean soup my husband and I had ever tasted! My husband ordered the Margarita flat bread and loved it. I ordered the BLTA sandwich (bacon, lettuce tomato and avocado) with the sweet potatoes waffle fries! So delicious! The only thing I regret is that I couldn't eat all of my meal it was so filling and we had no room for the awesome sounding desert. Women's restroom needs a good cleaning though. read more

A gorgeous Saturday afternoon in April and we're en route to get our weekend grocery shop done and we are hungry. We'd actually planned to go somewhere else for lunch, but couldn't find parking. We drove by Fire on the Monon and I said "Well, this place has good Yelp reviews and outdoor seating, let's try it!"... and it has parking.... plentiful parking. We asked to sit outside and the patio is lovely. I can really imagine this being a perfect spot to wind down after work. And they have a special patio area for people with dogs! How awesome is that? Our server was attentive and friendly...as seemed the other servers. So far, 2 for 2... location and service. Then the menu! So, let's start with drinks (hey, don't judge, it's a gorgeous Saturday afternoon!).. I had a 3 Floyds pale ale (Zombie dust), but they had plenty other choices, draft and canned, both local and regional. I wish I'd paid closer attention to the wine choices, but there were quite a few! Now for the food. I ordered the Garden Veggie sandwich with french fries. The garden veggie is a portabella mushroom cap with mozzarella (fresh and not melted), pesto and roasted red peppers. It also came with fresh baby spinach. All I can say is, I may have to rethink my opinion of other portabella sandwiches. It was perfection! The tang from the mushroom being marinated in balsamic and oil gave it that "wow factor". The french fries were the best I've had since Scratch truck closed! And Fire has malt vinegar!! Yay! My husband got the cowboy-cut porkchop... I had a bit and it was really nicely flavored and succulent. He got it with grilled asparagus, which was done just right, and beer-battered onion rings. The onion rings deserve a special mention as the batter is really fresh tasting and not heavy like a lot of batters are. I and three others visited for lunch today and were blown away by all we tried. They take what could otherwise be modest fare, such as mac and cheese, nachos and flatbread...infuse with their home-smoked pulled pork, add a dash of other magical ingredients and then super-size it all. There is nothing plain nor ordinary about any item on the menu. Even the fried pork loin sandwich is spectacular, with not one ounce of grease, and easily the size of a frisbee. Portion sizes are extremely generous...allowing for a healthy second meal the next day at home. The service and atmosphere lends itself to becoming the place you will frequent regularly. My wife and I visited "Fire By the Monon" for the first time this past weekend. It was a beautiful evening so we asked if we could dine at a table outside and our host let us choose from several of the available tables on the deck. As we started to look at the menu, both my wife and I immediately were aware of LOTS of sweat bees and flies. The waiter quickly moved us indoors to avoid the flying pests. During our dinner we observed several parties move indoor due to the pests and a member of the management staff go outside to access the problem and hopefully fine a remedy. I am sure this situation is only due to the time and season and would not be the typical experience for those who dine on the deck. For dinner our waiter recommended the fish taco's or the inferno burger and as my wife and I both love fish taco's, that is what we chose. The taco's were tasty. The portions were perfect The service was superb. We really enjoyed our meal and will be returning sooner than later. read more

Fire By the Monon is definitely a restaurant I will be visiting again and would totally recommend it to others! The outside appears to offer outdoor seating, with fire pits burning and lights strung above the tables. The fire smells like fall and creates an inviting atmosphere. The inside has wood flooring and kind of a rustic, cabin vibe. The hostess was very pleasant and greeted us right when we walked through the door. We were seated immediately. Although, we did go on a Monday night so I assumed it wouldn't be super busy. The weekends might be a different story at this place because I imagine they have a lot of business! Waters were given to us seconds after we sat down at our table and our server introduced himself, as well as informed us about the specials they had that night. We received our meals within about 15 minutes of ordering. I ordered the margherita pizza, which was very filling even though it is listed as an appetizer. My friend had ordered the dirty mac n cheese so I tried some of that and honestly, I wish I had ordered that instead! Not that the margherita pizza was not delicious, but if you go here the dirty mac n cheese is a must try! All in all, I had a great experience at Fire By the Monon and can't wait to go back! read more

Got to experience Fire by the Monon for the first time this past weekend. Very glad we went. My wife and I were out for a date night and wanted to try some place new and eat outside. We also wanted to enjoy a walk, as the weather was perfect for being outdoors. After walking about a mile on the Monon, we arrived to see a very busy place. It was worth the wait for sure. We were told it would be about a 45 or 50 min wait for inside seating or outside. We were seated in about 35 minutes at an outdoor table. There's ample seating outside, but everyone seemed to want to eat out there since it was so nice out. Staff were very friendly. Our server, Derrick was great. He stayed on top of it all even with a busy Saturday evening. And the food was excellent! I got the Inferno Burger. Wow, great idea - whoever it was that thought of putting pulled pork on a burger. I think their pulled pork must be one of their specialties since it seems to be integrated into several items on the menu. It has a very nice balance of smoky flavor, but still sweet at the same time. The onion rings are awesome, too. We will be back soon! read more

Pretty good place, I wish there were more options on the menu that didn't involve bread (like sandwiches and flat breads). I was really hoping for more meat-based dishes with sides. I ended up getting a flat bread hoping it was lighter. It wasn't necessarily lighter but it was really good. I got the chicken pesto flatbread. My only complaint was that it was dripping with olive oil which left the crust a bit soggy. But otherwise it had great flavor. I would probably go back here based on maybe a nightly special as opposed to the regular menu. I love that there is a dog deck. Parking is tricky here, so plan accordingly. We showed up at 1:30pm on a Saturday afternoon with a party of 7. The restaurant was busy but not overwhelmingly so, as there was an abundance of open tables. We were told that it would be at least an hour wait because a large party had just been seated. There was no offer to pull together two smaller tables but just a comment of "you may not want to wait for so long". As we left, there were multiple tables outside that could have been pulled together to accommodate the party. Perhaps they just don't want to accommodate larger parties except at a specific table. Pretty medicore place. We had tried it the first week it had opened and not truly impressed. It was a chilly day and we thought hmmm fireside by monon should have some firepits or something we can sit outside and enjoy the last of the al fresca dinners. We had a giftcard so we gave them another chance. We got there and no one was serving outside, the cutesy restaurant that once was a home was almost empty. No fires to be seen anywhere. When we asked the waiter he said there are some gas lamps out there if we really wanted to sit outside....? So since football was on we decided to stay inside because he didn't seem like he knew if the gas even worked outside. We Ordered the homemade spinach dip which was very hearty and filling. It came with hot fresh fried chips that were good. There were a few tvs in the bar, lots of outlets for laptops and a very friendly staff. We found out they had changed owners in the past few weeks and the new owner was a "better businessman that made better financial decisions" and "knew how to run a business, unlike the last owner". Well I was pretty indecisive as I wanted, steak, fish, salad, corn, and sides. Only the large meal came with sides and no real combination so I made my own. Ordered the salad with grilled asparagus fresh parmesan shavings and subbed the tomatoes for grilled corn. I added the salmon as it came highly recommended -special smoked flavor, etc. The salad came out with 2 heads of romaine basically and it was beautiful I couldn't be happier - until I bit into it. The asparagus tasted like canned asparagus, the corn was more than likely frozen cobbed corn that they thawed, grilled, and then cut and sprinkled on the salad. The fish had a distinctive smell almost borderline bad. Because of the smokiness I could not tell if it may have been a few days old or if that was the flavor they were going for so I ate it. Unfortunately for me I ate it all before overhearing a conversation about the other fish I was debating on. It went like this Waiter: the customer up front wants to know where our fish came from Owner: some lake Waiter: around here like white river or geist? Owner: check the box it came in maybe it said something or just make something up Waiter: yeah but I don't think you can catch that type of fish here Owner: tell them we don't know (A few minutes later) Waiter: so it is fresh caught from michigan I just saw it on the packaging. At that moment I decided my fish was probably on it's way to spoiling and I was served it anyway because these ppl knew nothing about fish or food.... My hubby ordered a very basic burger and onion rings which were decent. He only took a few bites - didn't look like it was cooked over a fire, which apparently is the concept of the restaurant..... not really dining by an open fire like I was hoping for. The onion rings were good and our server was great. they only serve wine or beer so not really a place I'd be seen coming back to unless they expand the concept of Fire by the Monon and let us eat their mediocre food by a warm toasty fire. read more

I've been to F.O.T.M. numerous times. At first, I wasn't too sure about the place, and I wondered if it would make it considering it's tucked way back on Oil St. in Broad Ripple. Well, it's making it, and it's a great place to eat! They have one of the best BBQ pork sandwiches in town - smokey, spicy, pork with Gouda cheese and a small dab of slaw to cool things down a bit. Also have one of the most interesting grilled cheese sandwiches around - it has sliced apples on it. Great food coupled with an ever rotating selection of craft beers - Jonny likey a lot! Next time you're thinking of hanging out in Broad Ripple, give it a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

Love coming here. The Gruben sandwich is one of my husbands favorites. Their beer selection is great, but it's never served cold, just slightly chilled. They're pet friendly and will even bring a water bowl out for your furry friend. Location is great. read more

Stopped In Indianapolis to take a break while driving from Columbus to St. Louis. Seems like a cool place, but I think we ordered the wrong thing (ever get that feeling? you can tell a place is good, but you didn't choose wisely?). Sat at the bar, which is our preference, and server was friendly, fast, helpful. Husband had grouper reuben (grueben?) w/ onion rings and I had trout sandwich w/ sweet potato fries. Grouper was a little greasy, onion rings were a lot greasy. I didn't even want a bite. Trout was just okay, not a lot of taste, and sweet potato fries were good. Enjoyed craft beers. If I lived here, I would definitely come back and give them another try, order something else. read more

Was looking for a place to sit down and eat after attending the home show. Found this place on yelp and have to say it was a good choice! My husband and I were planning on going to the Monon Food Company, but Fire had a smartly placed chalkboard, so we followed it around the corner on a warm Friday night. We didn't have to wait long for a table, and when we were lead to our table, I was surprised by how noisy the place was. There were lots of suburban-looking families with kids, and large groups. Aside from running into some of our neighbors, it appeared to be a non-Broad Ripple crowd. With ample parking and a location right on the Monon, I suppose that makes sense. Even though it lacked a more intimate atmosphere, we were very happy with the food. The menu was brief, and they stuck to things they do well: flatbreads and sandwiches. I had a portobello "burger" and my husband had a trout sanwich. I was pleased that I had the option of sweet potato fries, which were perfectly done, and much better than my husband's onion rings. I was also excited about the visible flax seeds and oats on my wheat bun. Seriously, the portobello was as good as a portobello can be (and I'll admit to having low expectations for mushrooms). I enjoyed the pesto, and it was served at the perfect temperature. We'll probably go back, and hopefully noisy suburban families won't. read more

Definitely check this place out. I took a large group here which included my grandparents, who are the pickiest people alive and they even loved it. Trust me, that says a lot! Everyone was talking about how good it was when we were finished. I have tried quite a few of the items on the menu and have never had a bad pick. Veggie Flat Bread with Goat Cheese and the Pasture sandwich are two of my faves. The sweet potato fries are probably the best I have ever had. Our waiter sold us on a bread pudding for dessert, even though we were already stuffed, but couldn't resist because it sounded so good and it was phenomenal. The outside seating is so pleasant in the summer and inside it's a cozy renovated Broad Ripple house, with lots of character. We enjoy eating in the bar area.
