My friend and I visited tonight for a quick girls dinner. I've never been disappointed any time I've visited Fire and Wine. As far as I'm concerned this is the best restaurant in the western suburbs. Awful. Service was crap; I called ahead to make a reservation and they said they don't make reservations but when we arrived and requested a certain booth in the back they told me it was reserved!!! I have been to Fire + Wine many times since moving to the area one year ago. The food has been wonderful each time but the service is sub par. There is an urgency to get you fed and out the door the minute you sit down. Your wait is typically longer than your dining time. The first visit here my husband and I ordered an appetizer, bottle of wine, two meals and dessert. The food came so fast and they were constantly trying to clear away the table in an effort to get us to move on. They sat the bill down on our table while we still were having our dessert and didn't even ask us if we wanted a coffee. They had us in and out of our table within an hour! We thought perhaps since we just moved back form Europe that we just weren't used to the fast pace back in the US. So we gave them another few tries. Each time we said upfront that we were not in a hurry and would like to relax and enjoy our dinner. Clearly this was not enough of a hint and we were again rushed through our meals. I tried again last night just for drinks thinking I would not be rushed in the bar. Wrong. When I entered with a friend I told the hostess that we just wanted drinks. She said we could sit a the bar or sit at a table in the bar if we preferred. We sat at a table and were told by the young owner that we wouldn't get menus since we seated ourselves.. We apologized and said we were told we could sit there and if it was a problem, we would move. He said no we could stay. Then the server came and gave us menus and we said again, that we were just there for drinks. She said this table is for customers who are also eating. We said that's fine we will move but she said we could stay. We ordered a martini each and felt we should order a dessert to appease the waitress. Five minutes after setting it down she asked if we were done. With half the cake still on our plate and forks in our hands, clearly we were not done. I ordered another martini and we continued eating our dessert. Very soon after she came back and took the dessert away and started cleaning our table then put down the bill. So we paid and gave her a 40% tip, not because of good service but because we felt bad being at the table even though it was in the bar section. We thought this would buy us a few more minutes to chat. We were wrong. She came up to us a few minutes later and told us the restaurant was getting very busy so she needed our table! Unbelievable!!! We were not even there an hour! I will not be returning to this restaurant again. I was fuming by time I was outside! I have never seen such poor service and blatantly rude staff! I live in downtown Glen Ellyn and all the other restaurants have terrific service. The food is is wonderful, but with that kind of service it does not matter. Very disappointing! read more

Amazeballs! I was here with my boyfriend and his family for his daughter's bday and when we got there I punched him in the arm because he hadn't brought me there sooner. This place is everything. Our server was outstanding. She remembered all of our names, was funny and engaging. We had a few small plates to start. They were soooooo good. The zucchini straws are a must! By far my favorite of the small plates we tried. Although please remember everything was delicious. Then I ordered the bbq chicken pizza. This was a religious expirience. I mean I didn't realize when I prayed over my food that the lord would come down and bless my food in such a delicious way. And it went so well with the yummy pinot noir we shared. The boy toy had sausage and pesto pasta and the kid had sausage and pesto pizza. Everything was so frigging good. And the place was packed! On a Wednesday no less! Decided to try out the new restaurant in Glen Ellyn last night and was not disappointed! My husband and I split the Shrimp and Crab Fritters (delish), Grilled Romaine Salad (WOW), Wild Mushroom Pizza (I will definitely be back for this) and the Pasta w/ Vodka Sauce(this was a bit of a disappointment- sauce was VERY salty and the pasta was a bit doughy). Wine and beer selection were great, the waiter was very attentive and the food was yummy. When we were seated, the restaurant was full and very LPUD, but as the tables emptied, the noise level was more manageable. Would be a greta place for a group or family with kids. Absolutely love this place! Everyone that works there from the hostesses all the way up to management, was beyond professional, kind and legitimately cared if we were enjoying ourselves. We had drinks first at the bar and then moved to a table where we let our server Kate completely take over our meal. She recommended both the specials (streak with a coffee rub, risotto and asparagus and a pappardelle pasta with scallops, spinach and a tomato cream sauce) and the burrata appetizer. Every dish was perfectly executed and absolutely delicious, so compliments to the chef and Kate for her great recommendations. They also brought us a complimentary grilled romaine salad, which I've had there before (it's a can't miss) but my boyfriend hasn't and he loved it. And last time I was there, our female server was incredibly rude. She was pissed that we had a late joiner to our table and had no qualms about making her anger known to us. Fire and Wine was one of my favorite restaurants until last night. There were 4 of and we had call ahead seating for 6:15, which usually means we get sat on time or within 10 minutes of our scheduled time. The restaurant was extra busy, so we were advised that there would be a wait of up to 20 minutes past our call ahead time, which was okay. However, as I'm standing there waiting with my husband, child and mother, a group of 4 comes in with a 6:30 call ahead and is recognized as regulars by the staff. Less than 5 minutes after they walked in the door, they were on their way to their table. I am pregnant, so I may be more hormonal than usual, but I was livid. My poor baby eats at 6:30 and someone had just taken the table we had been waiting for. I confronted the front desk and they acknowledged they were wrong to do that and found us a table within another 5-10 minutes. They apologized and brought out a complimentary bean dip for the table....gee, thanks. They made us feel completely disrespected and bean dip just didn't make us feel any more welcome. Our server was amazing, but the kitchen messed up my husband's order and we had to take it to go. Unfortunately, as much as I used to love this place and have been dining here for years, the way they treat and prioritize their customers left a bad taste and I don't feel welcomed to go back. If I'm spending $100+ for a dinner, I would rather spend it where ALL customers are treated equally. read more

I have lived in Glen Elllyn now for 6 months, and we finally decided to find out what all the rave was about. We LOVE Fire and Wine so much we went two weekends in a row. I don't know where to start... the atmosphere is great, the food is not only unique but absolutely delicious. Our server, Lauren was amazing. She recommended items that I would not even have considered trying and because of that was even more blown away than I would have been otherwise. I fell in love with the grilled romaine salad and the honeycomb appetizer. Lauren was friendly, knowledgeable and outgoing. I have been to Fire and Wine several times, and the food has always been good. However, I will not be returning after my experience this past Friday. A group of co-workers and I, 6 total in our party, went to F&W after work at 4:30. The place was pretty quiet at that time, and we got a table easily. We were told that we could only have our table until 6:00 because then it was reserved for another party. Interesting, being that the restaurant does not take "reservations" instead has a "Call ahead" policy which does not guarantee a table. We all ordered cocktails and food. At some point, I asked our waitress if the few of us who wanted to stay beyond 6, could move to a smaller table, as there were some open. At first, she said, "No, she didn't think so." But eventually, a table was found and three of us moved to it after paying out our bill. Our bill came to a couple hundred dollars total, and we all tipped. Within minutes of moving to the new table, a manger came over and asked if we were eating or not and started to remove the silverware. We said we might get a dessert, so to leave the silverware. Then, one friend ended up having to go, leaving just two of us. We ordered coffee and I ordered Baileys in mine. After about half an hour, the owner came over and rudely told us that since we were not eating (though, we already had eaten and paid a large tab), we would need to move to the bar because he was on a 2 hour wait. We asked if there were available seats in the bar, and were told no. We were stunned into silence and had no reply to him that would have been appropriate. We were incredulous at this extremely rude behavior from the owner. Then, he preceded to glare at us from across the restaurant. It was very uncomfortable. The waitress never offered refills on coffee or any other service, then dropped the check on the table without a word. I opened the folder, and the balance was zero. Obviously, the owner wanted us to leave so badly he comped our drinks, either that or he recognized his rude behavior--but I doubt it. We left a tip for the waitress on the table and left. I really had to fight the urge to tell the owner off. Luckily he was not in sight when we walked out. I have never in my 43 years of eating out frequently been treated so disrespectfully and downright rudely by a restaurant owner, manager, or staff. I will not be frequenting this restaurant again, and will be passing my story on to others interested in eating at Fire and Wine. No matter how good the food is--an owner who does not treat customers with respect does not deserve my patronage. read more

My siblings and I were celebrating Christmas with an evening at Fire & Wine last night. We were horrified to find a screw in our pasta dish. The incident could have been smoothed over with a good apologetic manager but the way the issue was handled was appalling. The waitress reported the issue to the manager who came to our our table and kinda made light of the situation by joking that he "heard we were the table that found some hardware in our dish". I don't think this is something that should be taken lightly and we consider the restaurant lucky and ourselves for that matter that the screw wasn't bitten down on or swallowed. The manager did have the pasta dish remade and brought out a free dessert. The LEAST he could have done was also remove the item from the bill. Obviously there is an issue in the kitchen if a screw can make its way into a dish that is served. I suggest all the appliances, pots and pans, and anything else in that kitchen that contains a screw be looked at and checked regularly. read more

This was my first trip to Flour + Wine (soon to be re-named FIRE + Wine), and was a good first impression! My friend and I stopped in briefly, just for a cocktail before dinner reservations across the street...we had reservations at Cab's because friends were in town from Nashville to play there that night. I have to say, while waiting for our cocktail and purusing the menu and seeing plates go by, we were tempted to stay here for dinner...however, we knew our friend's set would be starting soon, so just stayed for the cocktail. Our server was fantastic, super friendly and upbeat, even though they were crazy busy. In fact, the busiest place on the block! We'd already stopped by Shannon's Pub for a drink (mistake, looked like a nursing home!) and stopped by Cab's to push our reservation back 15 minutes so we could check out Flour + Wine, and they were quiet as well! The owner of F+W (Michael?) stopped by our table to greet us and we chatted about the atmosphere and that we'd be back soon to dine! He was a welcoming and gracious host. He also mentioned the name change to take place soon. We were happy we carved out time to check out this place that was new to us...we will be back! read more

The food (small plates, pizza, pasta, and salads) is consistently tasty and fresh, and the wine menu is extensive. The price point seems about right for the quality and amount of food. We had our office Christmas party at Fire & Wine today for a party of 14. Michael and his son Anthony could not have been more accommodating and our waiter, Nate could not have been more attentive. Flour + Wine is one of Glen Ellyn's best restaurants in my opinion. We go almost once a week and we've had almost every item on the menu and have ordered many of the "Chef's Playground" specials. We have yet to be disappointed in any aspect of our experience: food, service, drinks. The flatbreads are amazing, the pastas are delicious, the specials are always worth having. And it's a wonderful place to go with friends, order lots of dishes and share- in fact, it's encouraged. But one thing I rarely share here is the grilled romaine salad. It sounds bizarre, but I'd drive cross-country for this salad. It's THAT good. There's a full bar with a TV in one section and then a dining room. It gets rather busy and loud during peak hours, but we've rarely waited very long for a table. They're open late and all the servers are top drawer, friendly and professional.
