One of the best meals I've had in a long time! Both the small plates we had for appetizers were great: the black pepper shrimp and hanger steak. The pizzas were beautiful and tasted authentically Italian. The restaurant was crowded, but I can see why! My wife and I had eaten here a number of times when it was Flour and Wine, but just recently visited under the new Fire + Wine name. What used to be a favorite will now be taken off of our list. As others have noted, the service was not acceptable. Our waitress was nice, but she was tag-teaming her tables with another waitress that was extremely rude and seemed bothered with the most basic service requests. My favorite was when she asked if we'd like cheese/pepper on our salad. We responded that we would and she seemed put-off by that request. When the food arrived, my wife's pasta was undercooked. However, no waitstaff ever returned to the table to inquire about the meal. Twenty minutes later when she came back to ask if we wanted dessert, it was clear that pasta had not been eaten, she simply asked if we wanted a box to-go. I'm so sad! This was my favorite restaurant. We were here on Sunday for my birthday with my parents, husband and children. My mom called the night before to make a reservation which they don't take but informed her that since we wanted to come in at 3 we would have no problem getting a table. When we arrived we were informed by the manager that a Christening Party had the entire dining room booked. She said she could seat us right by the party or at a high top table by the window. Due to the way they were responding to us we were all beginning to feel uncomfortable like we were a nuisance for them. I chose the high top table. Instead of pushing two tables together, they squeezed the six of us at one table and pulled out two stools from the back somewhere that were backless. My parents would have been uncomfortable in those and I was worried about my children falling backward off the stools so I sat on the backless stool. My husband switched his backless stool with a stool that had a back from the table next to us. There wasn't enough room for us all so my husband sat at the corner of the table. Nobody else was seated at the high top tables the entire time we were there. There was plenty of availability to put two tables together for us. The food is usually amazing. This time was mediocre. Brussel sprouts were excellent though which is why I gave 1 star! The one selection my husband wanted they were out of so he had to get something else. We asked for virgin pina coladas for my kids. The waitress said she would bring them pineapple juice. I asked if they had the mix that has the pineapple and coconut flavor. She said they didn't have coconut and so we gave up and ordered kiddie cocktails for them instead. We ordered 5 desserts. Root beer floats for the kids, tiramisu, the donuts and the Nutella Calzone. Again, mostly mediocre but my Nutella calzone was completely burnt on the bottom. I wish I took a picture. Not just well done but black and charred. It tasted like very burnt toast which ruined the entire dessert. The waitress said the manager wouldn't take that dessert off our bill. Ridiculous that we had to pay for something we couldn't eat! I'm so disappointed because my girlfriends and I almost always come here for our girls nights out. Not anymore. We were treated so poorly. I will make sure to spread the word. No paying customer should be treated like that. Worst birthday dinner ever! read more

So sad we are disappointed because we really want a 'good' place in downtown Glen Ellyn to eat, since we live only a block away. That didn't happen tonight at fire + wine. We deliberately waited 1 year to try this restaurant that is a 3 minute walk from home to give it a chance to work out any kinks. Seems the name was one. We arrived at 4:45pm to assure immediate seating. The first thing we noticed is it still looks exactly like the previous restaurant, Gratto Italian Tapas, which is fine because its a nice looking space. Our server arrived within 2 mins with a cold jug of water. He started with a little background of how the food is prepared, the flour is imported from Italy, etc etc. He was professional and informative. We asked for recommendations and decided to go with the grilled romaine, burrata and grapes, ricotta and wildflower honeycomb, pancetta & arugula pizza and promodora burrata. The highlight was the salad. The wood fired grapes was the only thing worth eating there and the ricotta/honeycomb combination was nice however what's up with the 2inch thick crostini. Even my husband found it a bit of a challenge to take a bite off this thick hard chunk of bread. He had the pasta dish and thought it ok (nothing better than any other place) but heavy on the black pepper. We both tried the pizza, one piece each, that's it. Ugh! Just awful really! First the crust made from this imported flour was as bland tasting as a dry piece of white toast. Second the arugula was just a big pile plopped on top, not cooked within the pizza or sautéed, it looked ridiculous and didn't enhance the pizza in any way. The pancetta was a few big chunks really spread out instead of crumbled evenly to assure a taste in every bite. One of the worst pizzas we've ever had from Chicago to Brooklyn to Italy, truly bad! Our server clears our table and brings us the check. Hmmm, do they not have desserts here. Upon his return we ask and yes they do, we order the tiramisu and donuts. Overall, the salad and tiramisu was the only thing enjoyable out of a $80.00 dinner night out. Maybe it's all the wine people are drinking to give the good reviews on the pizza. We didn't care for the preparation of some items but the concept of the dishes are interesting and I could see people liking them. But the pizza is unforgivable. The other turn off we had was the manager/owner was walking the floor the whole time and passed our table at least 20 times in that hour, we sat at the first table into the dining room, but never stopped by. They need to put someone else up front that's personable, is friendly and approachable, will gab with the patrons, get feedback and maybe just say "Thank You" for coming in. read more

We arrived early around 4 to grab a drink an an appetizer since we had spent the afternoon looking at houses in Glen Ellyn. The bartender (Jason) did a fine job of taking us through the wines. One of the fellow patrons spilled a full glass of red wine all over mine and my boyfriends coat and on to my new (Kate Spade) purse. The wine penetrated through my Northface and saturated the hood- literally a hood full of wine and into the fur surround. The other coat was a wool (JCrew) and soaked into the wool. While this happened the owner said, I'll pay for the cleaning but it wasn't till I asked for club soda and went to the restroom for a good fifteen minutes & came back with a bar towel soaked red that we got a card. Now, I went in to get the coats cleaned- I was informed that my Northface couldn't not be saved because you cannot clean the fur on the coat. As for the wool coat, there will be a knap on the jacket and the stain will be apparent. As for my purse, I am a collector and it hurts to see the outside and lining damaged. I hope the cobbler can bring the purse back. I do not mean to drop names to 'drop names' we work hard for our money, we save and pick quality items which are now destroyed. Just like why we went to Fire and Wine, because we heard such good things, quality adjectives- but, at no time were our drinks comp'd nor appetizer, no follow up etc. not the quality experience we had expected. It is sad to see that when you fraternize a small business that they do not in fact take care of their own. What amazed us too was when we got the bill that our bartender realized we were in shock and asked if everything was ok- we had enough, enough wine was spilled." read more

Very cool ambiance and AMAZING food! Lots of vegetarian options and even some vegan options. The food is simple, fresh, innovative, and so so yummy. Probably the best Italian in the western suburbs. Great wood fired pizzas, awesome shrimp, great meats. Service is great and helpful. Prices are reasonable. Atmosphere is fun and upbeat. Good beer selection as well. Highly recommended although you have to get there early since this place is always jammed. My only complaint is that I wish they would open for lunch at least on weekends. read more

The owner has confirmed that his staff is more important than the customers. Even when the staff is rude and sarcastic to the customers. He refused to answer the customer's questions and acknowledge that his staff could have been a lot more accommodating. I will never go to this restaurant again based on the way his staff treated us and the owner's unwillingness to recognize the customer's point of view. read more

Ok - This place is fantastic! First, the atmosphere is comfortable. This restaurant doesn't accept reservations (probably due to people cancelling last minute?) and will be PACKED by dinner time, so don't expect a super quiet dinner as it is a small space and gets a little loud (but that means they're awesome!) After seeing other reviews I figured that it would be the usual "great location/average food" type deal. However, when we started to get our food we were blown away. I shared the small plate Pork Bellies with Pears with one other person. The portion is relatively small, but boy did I regret sharing. We literally couldn't even offer it to the other people with us because it was soo good. For the main dish I ordered the 2, 3oz filet medallions with the broccolini and roasted potatoes. The potatoes were average, but the filets were wonderful and cooked exactly how I wanted them! Our server was funny and really calm. Talked a lot, but I am the same way, so I can't complain! He made sure we always had water, drinks and we're happy with our food. Overall awesome experience. read more

Third time there, and the experience was the same: great tasting food and indifferent, distracted, disengaged service. Ordered appetizers. Server disappeared. Did not reappear until after appetizers were long gone and drink glasses long drained dry. THEN she took our dinner orders. Got an order wrong. Took it back. Brought it wrong again, but left before we could say anything. Out of hunger, we ate it anyway. She didn't return until we were done. There are no negatives here! Now the wait is a bit long on weekends (we arrived at 6 on a Friday and our wait was 45 min. for 2 of us) but we didn't mind at all. Sat at bar and had a drink. You can request preferred seating which probably would be good if you have more than 2 in your group as we heard it was an hour to hour and a half wait otherwise. But let me say -- IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! The atmosphere and service are wonderful. Then there is the food. Oh my. We had the mushroom stuffed gnocchi -- WOWOWOWOWOW! Amazing! Hubby had the mushroom stuffed ravioli and I had the mushroom and brussel sprout pizza. Now the ravioli was beyond good but that pizza . . . there are no words. For dessert (yes, we made room to share a dessert!) we had the caramel pudding 'thing'. PERFECTION in a glass. Perfect, light little end to an outstanding meal. Truly, I could have eaten one of those all on my own. Or two. Or three. This is definitely one of our new favorite restaurants. My wife and I recently visited Fire + Wine for the first time to celebrate her new job. We ordered drinks, an appetizer, salad, and then ordered a pizza. I took a bite of my pizza and found something that I could not chew. I thought about it for a moment - not wanting to spit something back on my plate, but quickly realized I could not chew it at all. I pulled it from my mouth only to realize that it was a blue piece of athletic tape. The waitress told her manager. He quickly offered to refill my drink, and asked if we'd like a new pizza. I was grossed out considering where this athletic tape may have come from and how it might have wound up baked into my pizza, but we were enjoying the restaurant and willing to give it a second shot. At the end of the meal the waitress brought the bill, and let us know that the manager had decided to comp the replacement pizza and the refilled drink. I was shocked that I would still be expected to pay for everything I ordered including the pizza (blue athletic tape and all) and my drink. I felt that the situation was extremely poorly handled, and I was mistreated by the restaurant management. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants, but be prepared to wait to get seated. Alas, waiting is the down side of going to a great place (and the 4 star review rating rather than 5). They don't take reservations here. On the plus side, while you are waiting there is a nice bar with some great cocktails. There is always a featured drink of the day which changes with the seasons and fresh ingredients that are readily available. Sometimes when it isn't too crowed, I just eat at the bar. The simple house salad with shaved fennel is a very good way to start along with some zucchini fries. Both choices are yummy and made fresh. You can't go wrong with any of the wood fired pizzas. They are some of the best wood fired pizzas that you will find in the western suburbs. My personal favorite is the Italian (a margarita pizza). But do not leave here without dessert! The creme salted caramel pudding is to die for. I hope they keep it on the menu. Did you hear me Fire & Wine management? Great eats! read more

Fire + Wine is flawless! I have never had a dish here that I wasn't over the moon about. Every visit seems to be better than the one prior. The grilled romaine salad might be the best salad I've ever had - definitely in the top 3. Our most recent visit included an order of the eggplant and ricotta appetizer, which was outstanding. The real highlight though, was the Friday special - pork blade steak. Usually pork shoulder "steaks" can have kind of a fatty chewiness about them and pretty much every other pork shoulder steak I have had at any other restaurant I have had to spit out pieces of fat and tissue because of the texture. The pork shoulder at Fire + Wine was different and much better than any place else! I think it was the pan frying prior to baking that made the fat and tissue tender enough to eat, I am not sure, but the chef is a wizard back there! We are told that it will be on the fall menu, if it's not then we will have to just go back on a Friday again, it's well worth it! Delicious! read more

We held my sister's 30th birthday dinner here this past Saturday with 15 family members and close friends. I can't say enough good things. We picked this restaurant because it is her favorite. The rest of the party all came from the city, but it was absolutely worth the drive. Planning the party was easy, everyone we spoke with was very friendly and helpful. We arrived at 4 and were immediately taken care of. The service was amazing! They took care of everyone's drink orders and we never waited on food or drink. They handled everything seamlessly, especially since we were a large party on a busy night. Our expected menu even turned out to be too much food and they were able to save us some money and wrap up the extras. We never felt rushed, especially knowing they needed our table to be free by six. The food was just as good as the service. We had Arancini Mozzarella, Zucchini Fries, House Salad, the Beet Salad, Margherita pizza, BBQ Chicken + Pancetta pizza,The Butcher's Corner pizza and the Pan Roasted Chicken Thighs. Everything was so delicious and the service was just as amazing, I wish I could give this place 10 stars!! read more
