This use to be a favorite spot. But the last 2 trips were so disappointing that we left the restaurant. On our last visit one of the wait staff couldn't be more of an arrogant jerk. We showed up sat down and he came to the table to tell us to put our masks on over our ears before he would take a drink order. Then went to the table next to us to discuss wine. Apparently the Covid wasn't over there because he stood there for 5 minutes talking while those customers didn't need to mask up to talk to him. First visit- came at 445 pm on sat and lots open spaces but after 530 it packed out. ricotta honeycomb and pepper shrimp apps great. bbq pizza very good and kale salad with dates good. they forgot my dates twice then mgr came out with bowl of the dates and comped our app and the salad. Ok, I am hesitant to write this review because it's our family's favorite restaurant and difficult enough to get a table as it is. However, this is a gem. Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Mike, Anthony and the rest have done and do a marvelous job and keep the place one of the top casual yet fine dining experiences in Chicagoland. Walker is a star of a waiter as are the gals, but we've had Walker twice and he is the reason the over 20% tip was invented. Will we be back again? This is probably my favorite place in town to eat at...me and my boyfriend would eat here every day if we could! We love wine, almost always get a bottle when we come here. We also LOVE the pizza. OMG the Regina Margherita pizza is fabulous. I get it every time without fail. The appetizers are unique and the specials are also very delicious. Some of the dishes are slightly like a Tapas restaurant, but if you want a real treat that tastes good every time, this is the place for you. Only warning....watch out for the waits! The two of us did have a solid 90 min wait, but that was what we were told to expect so we settled in to the cozy, convivial (place was jumpin'!) bar to nurse a well made martini and French 75... Started with a whipped ricotta and honey, quite yummy; octopus pretty spicy but still delish, scallops, pizza, all very nice... One slight prob, my main resto pet peeve I guess...warm red wine! Been to many fine restaurants, some with somms, that still don't seem to consider this a glitch in their wine service...cellar temp, please...we had coupla $10 glasses of Barbera that were grossly warm. Yum! I tried this place for the first time last Friday with a friend. We both loved it and will be back! It was packed so I recommend calling ahead. The service was great and the food came out quickly and was delicious! We had: Cosmos- very refreshing and nice orange flavor ($9) Ricotta/honeycomb small plate- delicious and fun to try- would like about twice the amount of bread and honeycomb for the price though ($10) House salad- really tasty house dressing, pecans, Gorgonzola, fennel, greens and tomatoes ($6) Shrimp and avocado salad- also really good, shrimp were cooked well and had a nice flavor ($14) Vodka pasta- fresh pasta with a spicy tomato cream sauce and crispy pancetta. I really liked it! You have to like spicy though. ($14) Kale and mushroom pizza- wood-fired, nice crust and flavor- my friend said it was good! ($14) Homemade donuts- so good! They have a call-ahead program where you call and give them a time you will be there. When you arrive you get moved to the top of the list. It is kind of like a reservation but not really. We arrived right on time and were told about 30 minutes. They were right on. Started with a nice bottle of wine that was reasonably priced. We were a party of 4 and decided on small plates. We ended up with: arancini-amazing, grilled octopus-just ok was under seasoned but tender, grilled polenta-very good with nice crust, burrata with roast tomato chutney-disappointing as the burrata was too small by proportion and the chutney kind of bitter. Less chutney-more cheese! Meatball sliders-great mixture of different ground meats, flavorful and moist. All-in-all this was an excellent meat. I brought my wife here for her birthday dinner on Thursday, August 3rd, 2017. We had called ahead and were placed on the Priority Wait List for a 7:00 PM dinner, party of 3. I recognize this is not a reservation, but it prioritizes my name on the waiting list. Upon arrival just prior to 7:00 PM, I checked in with the hostess and was told the wait would be approximately 15-20 minutes. After 30 minutes, I checked in with hostess and was told we would be seated soon. 15 more minutes, checked in again and was told the same thing. After an hour of waiting, I had decided we could not wait any longer. As I mentioned, it was my wife's birthday and we had plans to meet with others for additional celebrations and desserts. I informed the hostess we would no longer be able to wait and that I would like to speak to the manager. We had to wait for the manager/owner for an additional 5 minutes and when I spoke with him he explained that people just were not leaving their seats and were just sitting there after their meals. I recognize this is not his fault, but being told the wait would be 15-20 minutes, and having to wait an hour, I had run out of patience. He assured me that he would "take care of us" and that since we had waiting this long, to please wait a little longer. After waiting another 10 minutes or so, we were finally seated. We were given a few appetizers/small plates on the house to compensate for the wait. When we finished our meal, it was already so late, that our date/reservation with our second birthday stop had informed us that they would no longer be able to accommodate our party. This was extremely disappointing and put a huge damper on my wife's birthday celebrations. She was not even able to get any sort of cake or dessert that we had planned for her. I will acknowledge that the manager/owner was polite and tried to make up for the fact that we had to wait so long, but unfortunately, this could not change the fact that our post-dinner birthday plans were effectively ruined. Aside from the excessive wait time, what made this worse is that I had informed the manager/owner and hostess that it was my wife's birthday. And there was no sort of "Happy Birthday" treat. No dessert offering. No birthday song. No candles. Nothing of the sort. I don't think I am being unreasonable to assume that when we are told we will be "taken care of" and have stated that this is a birthday dinner, that we would be provided with some sort of "Happy Birthday" dessert for my wife. My wife and I dine at Fire + Wine on a fairly frequent basis, you will even see that I am the "Duke" of the restaurant on Yelp, and I have to say that we have always been very happy with Fire + Wine, and have left positive reviews. However, this time our experience ruined my wife's birthday dinner celebration. What we will remember from this evening isn't the joy and celebration of my wife's birthday, but the waiting and disappointment from our experience. First time dining there - three of us on a Friday night before Christmas --- so very crowded. I read reviews online and knew about the waiting list so we got on the list and prepared to wait once we arrived. Wait we did. Hostess said maybe 20 minutes which was actually an hour wait. Once seated however, our wait staffer was extremely attentive and not even in a hurry. It was about 9 pm by that time and some of the larger family tables were starting to leave. The noise level is boisterous. Overall, I liked the atmosphere - no complaints. Great service. Food was ok - I didn't think it was exceptional. Prices seemed fair. I got a margherita pizza and a salad. The salad was not large - enough for 1. The pizza was generous. I ate 2 pieces and took the rest home. My gal friends got a salad to share, Mussels, and a couple of other small plates. They were very happy. I have to add that the waiting area in the bar is insufficient for such a long wait - however the waiting guests were pretty intoxicated and very entertaining. I've never had anything short of a great experience at Fire & Wine. The food is unique and well executed, with a wide variety to choose from. Everyone in your party is going to find something they enjoy on the menu. The service is always excellent - every waiter I've ever had here has been friendly, helpful and attentive without being intrusive. The bar is also really solid. I usually get wine, but I've had a couple of their cocktail specials and they've all been delicious. The only downfall with this restaurant is that they do not take reservations, and the wait is typically quite long. It's never deterred me from going though. My one issue: My wife did the priority wait list for my birthday since they do not take reservations, which I am fine with. But about 30-35 minutes into our wait, a group of people walk in and one of the guys said "I'll get us in." the group that stayed back said "Watch him work his magic." AND THEY WALKED RIGHT IN. We continue to be impressed by the superior food, service, and atmosphere. Here are some of the reasons we love this place: -Servers are friendly and happy to offer menu insight -Carryout is quick! Each time we call the wait is 15 minutes or less -Often, we receive a little something extra with our carryout order. We unpack the bag at home and have been surprised by complimentary orders or donuts and pea pods. -The food is excellent. -The owner takes pride in his business and cares about the satisfaction of each customer. I called to order a carryout order, and received a call back a few minutes later from the owner to inform me of a similar menu item. This place is where my husband and I go for most of our dates. We never liked to go to the same place on multiple dates, but Fire and Wine is always so much fun. The food is superb. The Aricini mozzarella and zucchini fries are really good appetizers. We enjoyed their specialty pizza when we tried it, but we usually get a pasta dish. We have never been disappointed and we always have great service. It can get very busy, so it's best to go early. But, if you find yourself waiting in line, it's worth it. read more

We ate at Fire + Wine a few months ago and had a great experience. It is ALWAYS packed so we sat at the bar since we didn't want to wait for a table. We had the crispy pork belly (you can't ever go wrong with pork belly!!) and the pancetta + arugula pizza. Everything tasted amazing and we know why the restaurant is rated so well.
