Blink and you might walk past one of the healthiest and tastiest dining experiences in the DuPont circle area. As luck would have it, I'm so glad that braved the freezing spring rain for a lovely dinner at Firefly. The goat milk gnocchi was outstanding, quite possibly the best I've had outside of Italy. Get the truffle fried to share (or to devour solo eel your dinner date is in the bathroom)!! The prices were a little steeper than I had anticipated, but the quality of food and atmosphere matched accordingly. The food was good but the service was abysmal. We checked in for a reservation and had to follow up with the hostess after 20 minutes. She said "welcome" to my friend even though he had checked in 20 minutes prior and we remained in her line of sight at the bar. There were free tables the entire time so it's unclear why she never sat us. The waiter never checked in on us after he took our order. Other staff brought our food, and no one asked us if we needed anything. We had to flag down staff walking by (after 10 minutes) just to get ketchup and hot sauce. Sunday night half-priced bottles of wine! That alone would be enough to get me there but the very tasty rolls and picnic-style appetizers kept me there for several hours. Standout: The fresh baked rolls - it was a challenge not to just keep plowing through these - had to hold off to enjoy the rest of the meal. Soup of the day was a butternut squash - very good - not too salty. The chicken liver is a standout as was the beet salad (perfectly marinated and not too mushy). Surprising standout: Shrimp + grits. Perfectly cooked shrimp - tender and flavorful (if you like garlic, this is for you) and grits were very filling but worth the calories. Good: The mussels were fresh but not infused with the flavor of the broth. One to pass on: We ordered the charcuterie and should have just order the chicken liver. The food here was definitely good but for some reason I just wasn't wowed by it. I think it's because we were seated in an awkward area right near where the waiters and waitresses were coming in and out of the kitchen and we were looking on to the main room. It definitely wasn't a bad place for dinner though! I had the grilled bistro steak which was SO juicy and flavorful and my sister ordered the crabcake. Both dishes were wonderful and I had a side of grits with bacon and parmesan--Oh. my. gosh. SO good. I tried not to inhale the grits. I wasn't as thrilled with our deviled eggs appetizer even though I had read such great reviews on here. It was a bit pricey. It seems a little too expensive to me. The service was pretty blah, especially because I made reservations and specifically asked for a complimentary dessert with the meal for a "good luck" to my sister for a job interview she would have. Online it said they would do complimentary desserts like that and they completely forgot. Pretty good restaurant. Fairly small inside so prepare for that. We hadn't made a reservation but were able to sit at the table tops in the bar area. Food was pretty good. They serve different kinds of bread when you are seated. We had a yeast bread that almost tasted like a pretzel top and pound cake. I ordered the shrimp and grits. GREAT brunch food, creative and cute interior, and attentive service. Firefly has a nature/green theme, which is completely up my ally. I went with the waitress' recommendation for Kale n Eggs. It's def now one of my fav brunch dishes, including various brunch spots I've been to in New York. Flavor and texture was on point! My friend got the egg BLT and he really liked it as well. I decided to try their dessert because I was so happy with my main dish. Chocolate brûlée was rich and yummy, although I think that the main dishes were much more impressive. read more

We had a great meal at Firefly. The drinks are unusual, the appetizers are fantastic, and the prices are reasonable. The service was great. Ask to be seated in one of the window spots if the weather is nice, they open the windows all the way from floor to ceiling so you feel like you are eating outside but still stay cool. If you are Gluten Free, they offer one of the most extensive GF menu's I've ever seen. Firefly is close to our office so we often do happy hour for work at this place and our coworkers are all obsessed with the fries. Last time we also got the Mac and cheese which was amazing. Also love how many vegetarian options there are! Overall this place has a great happy hour but since it's at the bar only, is tough for groups of 4+ since there's limited bar space. I will qualify this review by saying that we were there on Mother's Day, but the food/service was pretty average today. We had the shrimp bisque (didn't even finish it because it was cold), lemon ricotta pancakes (best thing we ordered but small portion), eggs Benedict (pedestrian), and the griddled mushroom sandwich (fantastic). The food was slightly above average but the service left much to be desired. Our waiter took 25 minutes to bring us the check and didn't really check in on us at all. This place is so adorable. There's a huge tree in the middle of the restaurant with "fireflies" on the ceiling. The check comes in a jar with a "firefly" in it. It's just too adorable. The shrimp and grits tasted like somebody's gramma was in the back making it while listening to James Brown. It was so buttery and creamy! I loved how they used tiny shrimp, giving me a consistent ratio of shrimp to grits. The fresh fruit were very fresh. I didn't care for the deviled eggs, which is odd because I LOVE EGGS. They used a beet filling, which reminded me of pickled eggs (yum). There was some weird red beady things that freaked me out and my boyfriend took advantage of my unsophisticated palette and told me they were octopus eggs. I really almost threw them up. The eggs are topped with some god awful tasting cracker that I had to wash down with half of my $3 mimosa. The parking in that area is the reason why I can't give Firefly 5 stars. It isn't the crammed space or the deviled eggs. We over spent 30 minutes looking for parking about 5 minutes away. There are hotels and other restaurants in the area, so I'm not sure why they had ALL of the nearby (and not so nearby) parking garages closed. Used to LOVE this place, but granted that was years ago. First time I'd been back in a while for breakfast. So disappointed. I got there (and yes I'll admit it was MLK day so perhaps they were short staffed) and was told to sit wherever we wanted. We sat down and waited. No one came over for several minutes so I finally flagged down what may have been the hostess and requested menus and water. The menu was different from what they had online, which is fine, that happens, but wasn't a fan of the selection. We settled on a side of eggs, fruit, muffins and another pastry. More than 20 minutes go by and we still haven't gotten our food. I thought this was a little odd since it wasn't that crowded and really how long does it take to make a couple scrambled eggs - everything else should have already been ready. They come by and say they are out of the other pastry so I selected the muffin too. Why did it take you so long to figure that out? After 30 minutes or so we get our food. The fruit bowl was a good size, but my muffin inside was still FROZEN?! Seriously? I was starving so ate around it and when we told them we just got a sorry hun. So is that what took 30 minutes - to partially defrost my muffin? Definitely won't be going back here. The staff seemed annoyed from the beginning and rude toward us and when you combine that with the sub-par food, my recommendation is to skip it! Too many other options. read more

I had brunch with a group of 8 people. We made sure to call ahead and make a reservation. I really enjoyed the atmosphere with a large tree trunk as the space's main centerpiece with large leaf shapes around the ceilings with lights. We kept wondering what the restaurant looks like in the evening. Do the lights flicker like fireflies? I guess we will have to come back. In terms of food, I ordered the omelet served with potatoes. The egg was fluffy and inside was cheddar cheese, sweet potatoes, and arugula. Everything was well seasoned and served at a nice temperature. Other entrees that the table tried include the scramble (pretty typical breakfast plate) and the cinnamon apple pancakes, which were topped with a nice helping of cooked down apples. And, wow, the cinnamon smell wafting off the plate makes you feel like it's autumn. The only thing that I didn't appreciate was the price point they were charging for the meals. My omelet was $16, and it really should have been $10-12, if that. A little too pricy for me especially since it wasn't like I was paying for some cage-free, organic eggs and artisanal, hormone-free cheese. And if I was paying for that, then they need to be advertising their ingredients. I digress; overall, I think the group had a decent experience and enjoyed our entrees because the plates were looking pretty clean by the end of the meal. read more

After a disastrous experience at Le Pain Quotidien at Dupont Circle, which ended up with me walking out, I arrived at Firefly for Sunday Morning breakfast. I didn't have a reservation, but was happy to sit at a table at the bar. Michael, my efficient and sexy waiter, immediately had a hot cup of coffee in front of me and my order placed. The scrambled eggs with asparagus, tomato, and green chickpeas was hot, filling, and delicious. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the prices were not outrageous. I know people are going to balk over this review, but I think Firefly deserves the 5 stars on this night. 1- vibe was good. not a giant place so everything is kinda intimate. 2- the food was done well. it wasnt mind blowing, but it was spectacular. Risotto with Kuri Squash and pickled mushrooms, special black bean soup of the day, mussels with celery root and white wine sauce, and red velvet cake were all amazing. 3- I love the waitress. Attention to detail and amazingly accommodating. folded napkins when she didnt have to. added commentary about the food selection in an intelligent and non-insulting manner when called upon...and overall was a delight to have serving us. This review is for their Mother's Day brunch. It was "ok" and sadly predictable. I know, you're probably thinking we should expect it to be their normal service and food because it's packed....but it wasn't. My friend got the pancakes and a cup of shrimp bisque, which the waiter was pretty judgmental about, "You're ordering ALL of that?! Wow! (judgmental stare)" ... Bigger bill usually means bigger tip, stop complaining. Then we saw the pancakes, and although they were pretty tasty, the portion is not like normal pancakes. They're tiny. Which ... is fine....but really didn't fill her up. And sadly, the soup was luke warm...and fell really flat. I got the griddled mushroom sandwich....which was delicious, but a mess to eat. I'm not complaining, but some people might not be into messy items so that's why i'm noting it. My mom got the Eggs Benedict. As far as I can tell they tasted good. But looked pretty unimaginative. I guess I can appreciate keeping staples as is. I also feel like brunch is annoyingly the same anywhere you go sometimes. Anyway, 3 stars because although some items were pretty tasty, at the end of the day it left much to be desired....and our waiter was kind of a douche who complained at our order and then never checked on us after we got our food. read more

We had Sunday brunch here and the food was fantastic. We were staying at Hotel Madera, which is attached and affiliated, so we went down at 9AM for some breakfast. I enjoyed Smoked Salmon Club, which came with a side salad, and added country sausage. The salmon club was delicious, especially the chive cream cheese, and well worth the price tag. And the sausage? Delicious, definitely hit the spot. My wife had the french toast, which came at the server's recommendation, and she loved it as well too. She said she likes it when the french toast is crispy on the outside but soft in the middle, which is how these thick slices were. The only hiccup, and this wasn't Firefly's fault, was that they can't serve mimosas or bloody mary's until 10AM due to local law in Washington D.C. That meant we just hung around until around 10:30AM. :) read more

This was my first time going to firefly and previously heard about this place just by googling popular brunch spots in DC. I have to say that the food here was great! I ordered the steak and eggs and a $15 mimosa carafe to split with my boyfriend. Splitting the carafe between two ppl makes for about 3 mimosas each which was plenty and the mimosas were pretty strong and weren't mostly orange juice. The only negative things I can say would be the service could have been a little better because the waitress forgot about our mimosa carafe and we waited 10 minutes before she even came back to check on us and we had to remind her of our order. But she quickly rectified the situation and our mimosa came out in a matter of minutes. Secondly their brunch menu doesn't have a lot to choose from. For instance my boyfriend ordered the French toast which some may feel is enough but could be better if it atleast came with a side of eggs instead of having to pay an extra $5 for two scrambled eggs. All in all great place to try. I would give it four stars and I'll probably be back! read more

Wow. CHAOS. We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for a drink. At first we had a seat at one of the high tops in the bar area, but after no service for 10 minutes we moved to the bar hoping to have better luck. They must have been extremely short staffed as there was only one gentlemen behind the bar, and although the bar isn't very big, he was making all drinks for the restaurant, servicing tables in the bar area, as well as all the customers at the bar. Poor guy was extremely overwhelmed and I don't think management even seemed to notice or help. We ordered two of the drinks on the cocktail menu, turns out the mixologist wasn't going to come in until 2 PM and so no featured cocktail would be available until then. Ummm I don't understand but okay...Instead we opted for the most simple drink possible, an Aperol Sprtiz. The bartender poured Aperol into one glass before running out and asking for a new bottle from the manager. Turns out they didn't have anymore bottles of Aperol. WOW. I see the bartender split the one serving of Aperol into two glasses and fill them with champagne before bringing them over. However, I truly appreciated his honesty and comping our drinks but unfortunately that doesn't make up for my first impression of Firefly. On the other hand, I loved the atmosphere and decor, will try to return but maybe for dinner/service in the dining room instead. read more

Stopped in for a bit while I was i the area. Sat at the bar and the bartender, NICK, was amazing! Incredibly educated with regard to mixology. He was teaching us the entire time we were there. WONDERFUL experience! (PS they are the first place I've ever found that had George T. Stagg Kentucky Bourbon - 140 proof). This is much more than a place o sit and drink. Came here for brunch on a Saturday and it was overall a good meal. The complimentary bread was a hot roll and a pound cake, type of bread. For my meal, I tried the summer scramble, which was good, and it came with a bread side (I chose a bagel) and breakfast potatoes, which were a teeny big spicy (in a good way) with old bay seasoning. I had the $3 mimosas, which were also fine. My company had the chilaquiles, which she says were very good, but a lot of food. Service was fairly good. My friends and I had a solid brunch here last weekend. Inside there was a cute, woodland theme. We started off with an avocado toast to share. While it was pretty good, it was piled high with so many toppings that it made it difficult to cut and share. We also ordered a carafe of mimosas that served about 6 glasses. For my meal, I ordered the shrimp and grits which was great! Sometimes I find when I order this dish, the grits are usually bland, but these grits were flavorful and spicy since there was hot sauce mixed in! So I am not giving a negative review for the the restaurant as a whole- this is for a particular individual. I have been coming to this bar for years. I adore BRENDAN and his new side kick IZZY!!! They are fabulous. However I have had multiple times where I have been served by Will and honestly I can't deal with his attention to himself and not to the customers surrounding him. I literally sit for serval hours and only get one cocktail. That one cocktail ends up not tasting the way I know it should. So I end up coming in and order a "normal" drink. That's not why I come here. I come because I love the mix drinks- the diverse menu- the creations and the vibe. I don't feel that way when Will is at the bar. I love the food. Love Kimpton. Amazing cocktails by Brendan. Stopped in last night for the first time to get a slurp of something and saw the bartender putting herbs like rosemary, basil, lavender, etc. into jars of water. When I asked him where he gets them, he said he grows them on the roof! I chose one of the cocktails off the happy hour menu--the eponymous "Firely," which had vodka and cabernet, infused with his home-greown grown basil, lavender and dandelion. Amazing read more

I came here with a friend on Friday - we actually showed up 15 min before official opening, but they still seated us and let us wait indoors. We were slightly disappointed that the Brunch menu wasn't available on fridays but the lunch was very good. First, the ambience and decorations of the restaurant are very charming. It's theme of wood with a tree in the middle of the restaurant was very cute and well done. Second, the service was also great and timely. Food wise, they do have a gluten free menu which was very appealing to my friend. Unfortunately, the initial complimentary bread is not gluten free, but for those of you who can risk it, it's delicious. I got the shrimp and grits which was so good. I was surprised how full I got despite the size of the dish and they don't skimp on the shrimp either. My friend got the Reuben on gluten free bread which she loved, and we split a side of truffle fries. Overall, a great lunch experience! I'll definitely be back for brunch sometime! read more

This restaurant was recommended to us as a good family-friendly choice in the area near our hotel. It has such a nice dining room and ambiance (looked even like a nice casual date night type place), that at first I was worried that our party with little kids would get dirty looks and be out of place. It was so nice to have the restaurant staff so welcoming to kids and did offer a kids' menu. They also bring out cookie dough for the kids decorate before the kitchen bakes it as their special treat at the end of the meal. (Having one kid with an allergy, the waiter was very astute and thoughtful to ask me in advance how I preferred to handle this - we elected "takeout" of the cookies). We enjoyed the roasted half chicken, brussel sprouts, and steak frites. (I saw the crispy chicken wing appetizer at another table with great envy which looked delicious and would love to try on another occasion. ) The restrooms are actually in the hotel part of the building that is connected to the restaurant. Recommend this restaurant, though given the atmosphere - it is more for better-behaved children. read more

We've been here 2 times for a date night. The first time, it was so packed, we had to sit at the bar. It didn't feel like we were eating a romantic dinner at a bar. Why? The bartender made our experience amazing. We had such a great time eating and talking with the staff. The burger I had was out of this world juicing and tender. The whole experience was good enough to come again. Our second time there was nothing amazing. We got it, sat down, had good food and left. All in all, we just had a very nice and quiet date. Then my Husband ordered the cioppino (mussels). He took one bite and sand!! He sent it back (as did I as this was a Valentine's Day dinner). When our food came out again, my trout (which was fine before I sent it back) was served skin up. The first time they served it to me skin down. I thought it was weird. One bite and I knew why!!! They over peppered it. Like big time. To the point where I couldn't eat it. We decided to leave. The manager gave us his card and offered us a free meal if we go back. We may or may not. Restaurant is an interesting environment, although crowded. The tables are placed so close together that you almost feel like you are dining with strangers. That being said, the food was superb. I ordered the pot roast, which was recommended by the server. It was a large portion and tender. My dinner companion ordered the smoked lamb chops which were also great. We chose the cheese plate for our appetizer, which was decent, but could have been served with more bread/crackers. The best part of this visit, however, was the dessert. We ordered the Chocolate Cake, which was extremely moist, almost mousse like. It was covered in a layer of coconut and pecans, and served with a small portion of vanilla bean ice cream. It was amazing and a surprise since I only ordered it because the other dessert options were not compelling. The only negative was the service. It wasn't horrible, but not on par with what you would expect for a restaurant advertised as high end. Regardless, I would return... if for nothing other than the chocolate cake. read more

I signed up for Yelp specifically to give Firefly a 1 star rating. The food was pretty good. However, when I sat down with my friend at our table, the waiter asked if I would like still or sparkling water. I said sparkling. She then asked if we would like anything to drink. I said no, water is just fine. So, I was surprised to see on my bill an extra $7.70 had been added for the sparkling water I had been offered. Never mind the fact that $7.00 (+ tax) for sparkling water is outrageous. At no point, did the waiter ever indicate that sparkling water would cost more than still. I was presented with an either/or option between still and sparkling at the beginning of the meal and, like any reasonable person would, assumed that both options would be free, as they were offered to me with no prompting. Is it naive of me to assume this? Possibly. But, it is irresponsible for a restaurant to offer a choice of water to a customer without giving them any clue that the water they choose could raise their bill by $7.70. And so, I will tell anyone who asks me to avoid Firefly like the plague as I'm sure they don't like getting stiffed any more than I do. read more

Had dinner here last night with my boyfriend for my birthday and we had a great experience! When they called to confirm our reservation they asked me if we were celebrating anything special and I said my birthday! When we got there and were seated the hostess gave me a little birthday card and a few of the staff members signed it! I thought that was a nice personal touch to our dining experience. The food. Everything was delicious. We had the fried oysters (large portion) and stuffed dates both were A+. I had the crab cakes with a side of the bacon/parm grits and my boyfriend had the New York strip, which was cooked perfectly. We both loved our dinners. The cocktails - I had the Spring Forward and he had the Mad Flavor(?), which were recommendations from our server - both were great!
