The food is quite good and the salad bar is great to pick up and add things to for dinner, or to have alone. I have had problems every time being told how much my bill is and then it going for more than I was told and then more again and told that the last charge was for using a credit card. Food: If you're going to eat here get the Fairfield U panini and a clam chowder. It's the best place to stop and eat breakfast or lunch! Service: It's a busy restaurant and I only come here during peak hours so I understand if it's not the greatest but, they still manage to have fair service. Decor: the ambience of the restaurant is really nice it feels like you are in an open environment and the back has a homie feel to it. It has mess hall and survival sort of theme. Firehouse Deli is a Fairfield institution. The sandwiches are decent - nothing to swoon over, but they are good, clean, and generous portions. The staff is pretty good and moving the crowds through when there are long lines. This is the go to place if go to Fairfield University. The service is quick and the food is always good. They have plenty of seating and food options. I've only ever had two things here - the Redgate and the Billy Boy. The Redgate is a hot hardroll sandwich with chicken, bacon, avocado, cheese and mayo. The hardroll isn't actually hard - its crispy on the outside and softer on the inside. The grilled chicken in thinly sliced and tender. Since it's hot all the ingredient melt together, it's great! The Bill Boy is a grilled sandwich on rye with turkey, cole slaw, cheese and Russian dressing. This is something different and I've never found something quite like this before. I recommend trying it at least once, it'll be worth it. read more

I had the turkey burger special which was served with pesto, provolone cheese, greens and red onions sliced very thin BTW. It was supposed to have roasted red peppers but asked them to hold that. The Redgate sandwich today had a good portion of chicken, ripe avocado, and a tasty flavor. Their chocolate chip cookies have a more homemade taste that's worth trying. It gets busy but they move the line quickly. Easy enough to pop in/out during your work day. Call in an order to skip the line. See friends, this joint used to be a relic - a real life firehouse that had been converted into a deli. That was a long time ago, and I assure you it WAS awesome. They had the fire pole, the firemen gear, it smelled like a firehouse...Brilliant. But now, now it's just an overpriced deli. Don't get me wrong, the food is great. If you wanna pay out the ass for a sandwich. ALWAYS order a half sandwich. It's still a full sandwich, just half the material and half the cost. Save yourself the $10 price point. If you go here on a sunny day in the summer, you will be destroyed by screaming children and soccer moms. If you go in the afternoon, you might score a seat by yourself to retain peace of mind. The lines can be brutal. But that's the price you pay for hype. My advice, bring back the old firehouse, drop your prices and lose the front. The Firehouse Deli in Fairfield, Connecticut is thankfully here to rescue the common stereotypical concept of deli from the stereotype of bland fluorescent lighting and sterile linoleum. It's located just off the main drage through town (Post Road/ Rt-1 in the 1400s street-number wise, near Borders, Banana Republic across from the famed town Gazebo). Once you walk through its doors into line, it will take you all but one glance at the controlled chaos of the deli line (and I'm talking about the one behind the counter) to know that freshness and made-to-order are all a part of the ingredients here. The menu doesn't overwhelm as in most delis where you are bombarded by a thickly shuffled menu. The wait line can get a bit cramped on a busy weekend, but hanging out a few minutes is worth the wait. I had the Suzie Ruben, with pastrami, and I couldn't resist adding a small side of tortellini salad . Topped off with your soda or deli bottled beverage of choice and you're on call for a hearty meal. The pastrami was hot and fresh off the make-line and the tortellini was portioned out only after I designated a size (As opposed to the pre-packaged overnighters you may be familiar with at some delis). The tortellini salad was light and not drowned in dressing or spices ,but prepared just enough to maintain a balanced taste without sacrificing flavor. Sandwiches and reconfigurations thereof will run you around $7.00 or less, on average. Sides from the pasta/salad display are priced by weight and can range $2-$3 or more depending on your appetite. For my choice of lunch, I came out under $11.00, including a drink, friendly service, a warm spot in the 70 degree sunshine outside, and enough energy to peruse the rest of main street Fairfield. Extra amenities as those are hard to come by in most deli combos, no? Order in Four easy steps: 1) Pick one of the fresh deli choices from the marker handwritten board. On your way, grab your bottled beverage of choice. 2) While waiting in line and preparing yourself for just how much you're going to enjoy your sandiwich, peruse the pasta/salads refrigerated case as you pass by (I am using ESP to strongly encourage you to try one of these fresh, fresh sides.) If all else fails, you will probably succumb to at least a bag of Cape Cod chips. I'm sure of it. 3) By the time you make it to the cashier's counter, be sure to ask for your order by name (your personal name----they take your name while you're initially placing your order). If it's not quite ready, the person helping you will keep an eye out for you as you wait. This is crucial on busy days because no doubt there will ba half a dozen other hungry sandwichmongers who have had the same culinary selection as you---you don't want to be mistakenly overlooked (not that their efficient staff would let that happen, but when you're hungry, you tend to think in worse-case scenario type situations). 4) Weather permitting, sit and stay a while. This place is pure chaos and I'm sorry but I can't say that it's in any way fun. They have decent food, better than Chef's Table, which on a bad day will make you sick (my friends and I have had a few too many bad days there). I usually get a Lugano panini with fries. The girls there are friendly and try to speed things along. The guys are usually at the beginning of line taking orders but on a slow day they always seem to be a little preoccupied with something in the kitchen. The salad bar was a bit messy and disorganized, but they have a good range of deli meats and fresh condiments to your liking. There is plenty of outside table seating whether in front or on the side of the shop. There is also some seating in the back should the weather not cooperate and you are still in the deli mood. I used to be a loyal Firehouse customer for years. Actually would call it one of my favorite places in Fairfield. I called in a pickup order at 230 and they told us they were closing at 3pm. We called back to say we would be there at 255pm which they said was fine and they even asked us to swap something we originally ordered since they were out of it. We got there at 255pm, the door was locked. A man came to the door claimed there was no order for us and they would not make it. Ciao for now firehouse. Thanks for nothing.
