In the summer you are guaranteed to get a headache and stand in line for 20 minutes while all the parents catch up with each other and let their kids run wild. This place is pure chaos and I'm sorry but I can't say that it's in any way fun. They have decent food, better than Chef's Table, which on a bad day will make you sick (my friends and I have had a few too many bad days there). I usually get a Lugano panini with fries. The girls there are friendly and try to speed things along. The guys are usually at the beginning of line taking orders but on a slow day they always seem to be a little preoccupied with something in the kitchen. Basically, there are limited options for a quick lunch in downtown Fairfield so this place is usually packed. Don't let that give you the impression that it's great food, though. 3.5/5 for me Good spot if you are looking for a full salad bar or are craving any type of sanGwich you could imagine. The salad bar was a bit messy and disorganized, but they have a good range of deli meats and fresh condiments to your liking. There is plenty of outside table seating whether in front or on the side of the shop. There is also some seating in the back should the weather not cooperate and you are still in the deli mood. I used to be a loyal Firehouse customer for years. Actually would call it one of my favorite places in Fairfield. I called in a pickup order at 230 and they told us they were closing at 3pm. We called back to say we would be there at 255pm which they said was fine and they even asked us to swap something we originally ordered since they were out of it. We got there at 255pm, the door was locked. A man came to the door claimed there was no order for us and they would not make it. Ciao for now firehouse. Thanks for nothing. You should really think before you lie to a loyal customer about an order. read more

I really want to give 3.5 stars because I will likely return however I'm rounding down instead of up. Clean and nice atmosphere. Probably better to visit when planning to sit outside rather than in. Had the bacon, egg and cheese today and I must say I was disappointed.... I've had a BEC here before- but this time around it didn't go well. Must be new management because this is not the same place I grew up with. Overpriced NYC bodega-quality sandwiches, brown lettuce, sticky benches, and five open trash cans in the front. Staying open past 2pm in downtown Fairfield on a Sunday seems to be their only market strategy. read more

very disappointed. I have celiac, so must use gluten free bread. They they do have it, so they were able to accommodate my dietary needs, however, they charged me full price of $7.95 for a sandwich, which would have been served on a hoagie, had i not needed to be gluten free. I received two slices of bread, two slices of tomato, two slices of fresh mozzarella, and two leaves of spinach. yes, that's what i was served for $9.00 Total with tax and meager (like the sandwich) tip. I went here today, October 17th, 2012 in order to enjoy their special outdoor beer garden for THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, as stated a few weeks ago in a CT POST article about it. I invited my elderly mother of German decent and a friend to treat them to something a little different. When I inquired about the beer garden I was informed they closed it "a week early". I belive the month of October has 31 days, and today being the 17th - duh. Did someone hang a sign on me when I wasn't looking that says "STUPID!"???? We went elsewhere. Disappointed. read more

It's a charming place that should have better food. The sandwiches are small and dry. Clam chowder tastes canned. Counter staff is surly. Guys who take your order are very nice. Hard to watch the skinny moms taking handfuls of free pickles from the pots on the counter and shovel them in their mouths. Blech. read more

This is the healthier option to fast food. The deli is in what looks like a converted firehouse. I stopped in for a quick sandwich and drink to go after my appointment. It was after 2ish and there was a constant stream of people heading in apparently for the same reason. They have seating in the back room and right outside. If a place is voted best sandwich by People magazine-chances are good I'll check it out if I'm in the neighborhood. Maybe their criteria wasn't that high. I had a pastrami ruben the other day-heavy on the salt, not heavy on the meat, and the sandwich was so wet it completely fell apart. Not a total fail but not that exceptional. What made more of an impression is how much attitude the cashier had. Seriously? You really think I'll come back when you give me the gas face for no particular reason other than paying? I've been going to the Firehouse Deli for well over the past 20 years. Definately a good deli. The Thanksgiving special (sandwich) is a classic. Great place to go when you want to load up the cooler and go to the beach, with some sea salt chips and seafood salad. Good Stuff read more

Hope you like waiting in line - and then being forgotten while your hot sandwiches turn cold. Then when you inquire about your order it takes THREE people to NOT find your order. We had a mixed experience here. It's a neat place with a college town feel to it. You order up front where you can load up on pickles and grab a soft drink. The Ruben with pastrami was really good. Very tasty, a generous amount of meat, and not too greasy. The New Yorker however was awful. It desperately needed spicy mustard. Or something... Really dirty and overpriced mediocre food. Not even remotely worth it. Walk across the green and get the Centro take out. It's waaaaayyyyyy better. Both in price and in food quality. The sandwiches are good - there's no doubt about it. But the customer service in this deli is AWFUL. They are often very busy, especially when the weather is nice and centrally located. But the team makes it seem like you are in doing them a favor but a sandwich as opposed to treating you like a customer. Their front counter staff, especially a woman named Mare, are downright nasty. Firehouse is great, i just recently started to go back here after forgetting about the little deli, and i must say it is as good as ever! The prices really are not that bad, 6.50 for a full sized wrap is great compared to some places in norwalk/ darien which charge about 8 dollars for one sandwich of the same caliber. Had the Redgate sandwich all five times I've gone. Very good sandwich. But, ordering in Firehouse can be a little complicated and there is no flow of traffic, just a little bit of a mess. There's nowhere to really stand after placing an order without feeling in the way. But I switched to ordering over the phone and picking up (much easier)! read more

I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt going there for a fourth time I was to be mistaken once again. The New Yorker which is one of their signature dishes (well under the previous owner) has never been the same the roast beef is always dry over cook the bread soggy. I went with three friends none of them could finish their sandwiches one of my friends bread was stale. For what they are charging it's not worth the cost it's mediocre at best the quality is just not there so common with many places today in Fairfield County. Every sandwich comes with a pickle (my favorite part) Nice salad bar, lots of drinks to chose from. how has this place only gotten 3 stars?!! Until recently I have lived in Fairfield my whole life and have eaten at this place more times then I care to say. To this day I have not tried anything else from this deli other than their tuna fish sandwich on a hard roll. IT IS AMAZING and hands down my favorite place EVER to get it. Don't ask me why it is, it just is. I don't know but it was also the first place I had a tuna fish sandwich. Now that I dont live in Fairfield, each time I come up, I make a point to try and stop in for a the sandwich. Just thinking of this place makes me hungry. This place is terrific. Based on reviews, called them to do a catering order for a visiting college soccer team. Professional, polite and helpful on the phone - we decided on the "Backyard BBQ chicken" sandwich and the "HarlemShuffle" cheese steak sandwich along with a tray of mac and cheese. Players and coaches both described the food as outstanding. Staff couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful when I picked up the food (right during the Saturday afternoon lunch rush). This is a deli in an old firehouse, although it seems to have been renovated. That said, it isn't cookie cutter and the food is above average. I typically get the salad bar or brunch (wraps with random breakfast ingredients), and never go here during the weekdays, so I haven't experienced the crazy lines.
