Since we have been back in Athens and Firehouse is just down the street we have become big fans of their subs. We usually order and pick up but sometime eat the combo on site. I headed to Athens to grab a bite to eat during the weekend before the first Covid Thanksgiving. I was horrified at all of the people gathered in groups downtown and walking around without masks, so I headed back home. On my way, I passed by Firehouse Subs. They were well lit, and because of the glass windows, I could see inside and was relieved to see only a few people there. It seemed like many individuals get their order to go, and most ordered in advance. There was a couple sitting at a table inside without masks, but they were dining in. There was also a nurse who showed up to order something to go, but she was wearing a mask. The place was large enough that we could easily spread out and maintain plenty of distance from one another. Lots of the tables and chairs that would fill the space in front of the counter were stacked out of the way to allow customers to keep their distance. All of the staff were wearing masks and were actively engaged in making sandwiches most likely for those "to go" orders. I scanned the menu and settled on a classic meatball sub with marinara. It was hearty and hit the spot. The bread was perfectly soft and fresh. I didn't have to work to tear off rubbery chucks nor did the bread disintegrate under the weight of the meatballs and juicy red sauce. It was served in a sturdy eco clamshell that was ideal for eating ones meal on the go. There was outdoor seating, but it was a bit cold and poorly lit, so I opted to dine in my car instead. I enjoyed looking at the decor while I waited for my order. Firehouse Subs had protective fire gear such as helmets, jackets, pants, and fire hoses adorning the walls. When the manager was ringing up my order, he asked if I wanted to make a donation to the firefighters. I can't remember the exact amount, but it was around .58 cents. I said, "Yes" and I imagine others would too because it is such a small amount (perhaps the difference between your meal's change and the next whole dollar amount). In any case, what a great idea. It goes with the theme of the restaurant, and definitely goes to a good cause. One of the signs on the walls indicates that a portion of all sales goes to the firefighters. What a great, feel-good business plan. I look forward to coming back and trying some of the other goodies they offer here. read more

my daughter in law was just in this location on 10/6/2023, around 4:30, and the young black lady at the counter refused to serve her because she was white, Literally telling her that she would not serve her for being white. being shy and non-confrontational she turned to leave when another young man stepped forward and apologized and asked house he could help her. i have been going to this firehouse subs on Prince Ave for 2 years now every single week. I have never experienced such awful customer service in my life then when I went in today and spoke with Wayne and this black women with glasses . I went in to get my buy one get one free sub for President's Day because my name was one of the names of the First Ladies. However, they had forgotten the name on the list and even with proof from the official White House page of names of all First Ladies and presidents they refused to give it to me because of their mistake of forgetting a name. This however, was not the issue, it was the way that they spoke to me, repeatedly raising their voice saying "IT ISN'T ON THE PAPER", and that "they didn't know who she was so it didn't matter if she was a first lady or not" making a huge scene that was not necessary at all. I said it was okay and I would just pay for the Sub and they continued to make loud comments (the manager and the cashier) The issue was not having to pay For a sub it was how they humiliated me in front of an entire restaurant because I questioned something I was confused about. I have ALWAYS loved this establishment and several of the employees know my name and order by heart, but the way I was treated today will make me never come back. TLDR: very unpleasant experience; to be fair this is not how I am used to being treated here. Anyways, the manager (not the guy I'm used to seeing) was surprisingly unfriendly. I asked for a pair of utensils to go with my order and was told if I needed utensils for my order they would be in there and promptly turned her back to me. Good lord. Where to start? I had a call in order. Asked 2 if the three at the counter making sandwiches if they made it since it wasn't on the rack. Totally ignored me. So then I waited in line while the one guy actually working was ringing up the other customer in the store. During this time I tried to ask the three people standing in the door way to the back offices, they couldn't be bothered because of the personal conversation about their plans for later that night. I was about to leave but I wanted to get my $15 worth of food. The sandwich wasn't bad, it was cold because of the extra 18 minutes it took to get it! I should have just hit the McDonald's drive through. At least I know the quality I'm getting and the people at work there typically are working. If a fireman went here in street clothes I would think they would have to get the off duty guys to come run the joint. I hate to give a 1 star to a place that as a company I love. I hope someone who can train their employees sees this and maybe uses a few of the Yelp add dollars for some training of the slobs working in this piss poor establishment. These guys are open 24hours which felt like a miracle for someone who had to find dinner super late after being on the road for hours. I'm guessing that drunk college kids (or those responsible ones who are up late studying) also feel just as excited to have late night nosh options available. I resisted the urge for a big ol' sub sandwich and opted for a lighter dinner ... the Italian chicken chopped salad. Holy cow! The portion size was incredibly generous and the ingredients were tasty. Little bites of chicken, small clumps of salami, tiny cubes of cheese, olives, tomatoes, etc. It was perfectly chopped and mixed. The wait was okay, and the employees were nice enough to deliver the sandwiches straight to the table. I ordered the smokehouse beef brisket, which was a little over sauced and the meat was a tiny bit dry, though not a big deal. Hot sauce game at this spot was still strong, even though the ratings for the spiciness were off. However, the variety of hot sauces were great, ranging from West Indian style to sweet chili Thai. This place is just as consistent as the rest I have been to, and by far the best bang for your buck in subs. The subs are good, but the people here seem to really have a problem understanding the concept of "no mayo." Four or five times now I've ordered from here through Bulldawg and specifically said "NO MAYO" all caps, no ambiguity. Not only have those sandwiches still had mayo on them, they were positively swimming in it. If I didn't know from other reviews that their sandwiches were typically drenched in mayonnaise, I'd think they were doing it to spite me for daring to request they not use what must be their favorite condiment on my sandwiches. Firehouse subs are awesome! This one on prince is always good. Fast and friendly service. They have lots of stuff to put on the subs. It's way better than subway. It is a little expensive for a sub shop though. Normally around $20 for 2 people to eat. The brisket is by far my favorite sub from firehouse. They load it with sweet baby rays BBQ sauce so I just get mine on the side and use there house sauce which is really great on the brisket. read more

After the two friends finished their subs, I decided to investigate why the two remaining subs were not delivered to the table. Come to find out they were given to another table that took them and left. Because the crew felt this was the people's fault for not saying that the subs were not theirs, they only offered to make the subs we paid for. Nothing else to remedy the situation.
