This restaurant was honestly a disappointment. I had high hopes for this restaurant because the restaurant had such a nice rustic vibe. There were signed wine bottles adorning the walls, pictures of past happy patrons, and it smelled heavenly. Those hopes were wrong. I did not like anything I ate here. In fact, this restaurant served to me the worst salmon dish I've ever received at a restaurant. The balsamic salmon was extremely dry and overcooked and the dish as a whole with its green beans and mash potatoes did not go together cohesively. Additionally the Caesar salad I received did not taste like a Caesar at all. Highly disappointed. My friends also felt that their pasta dishes were flavorless and one even came out cold. The only thing keeping me from giving 1 star is that our server was extremely attentive and very nice! Save your money and your time and go elsewhere for Italian food. read more

I just dropped $26 on a piece of Mahi Mahi that was tough and chewy. I mentioned it to the waitress, who seemed to care less. My wife and I assured her it wasn't personal, that the Chef needed to know. I don't think she told anyone, or at least management didn't address the issue. We've lived in Athens for 40-some years and been customers and friends of DePalma's on the Eastside. In fact, my son used to cook in the kitchen. Given that this was our anniversary dinner, this was a very disappointing experience, to say the least. First things first, the environment in the restaurant was very calmly and welcoming. The Italian aesthetic were definitely pleasing to the eye and the lighting was well lit. I shared breadsticks, which were very delicious. So instead of ordering an entrée I'll order another order of breadsticks and customize it to my liking with the beef and onion. We celebrated a graduation at Depalma's for a second time last night and we may make this an annual event. The drinks were good, especially the maple old fashioned, red sangria and espresso martini, as well as the Chianti, and we loved the spinach and meatball breadstick appetizers. The entrees were all excellent - special hat tip for the blackened chicken lasagne (lasagne del giorno), chicken parm and eggplant florentine. The Baileys cheesecake and cream cheese brownie were excellent desserts, too. But perhaps the best part was having Dylan as our waiter. He offered candid guidance on dish selections and laughed along with us while we celebrated. Good service makes such a difference and Dylan really was special. The Marinara Sauce was not good at all, no flavor, and cold. The chicken was burned and dry. Waitress was very attentive and did a good job. If only she had cooked the meal. I was in town visiting a friend and got a pizza craving. My friend knows I am keen on true white garlic sauce style pizzas (like a margharita) and immediately said, "you simply must try the wild mushroom pizza!" Now, I love me some mushrooms so I agreed. We ordered for takeout and drove up - there was a bit of confusion, I guess maybe because protocols have been changing here and there for Covid, but we finally got our order and took it home. This pizza was HUGE for two people and we had leftovers for days. The crust was very stiff and crispy, and the sauce was delicious. It reheated pretty well the next day. Tried a new location and loved it. Sat outside because the weather was gorgeous and loved how there was a partition closing off the restaurant and the outside. Decided to try something different this time and landed on the Pasta DePalma which was absolutely delicious and so creamy. For my additional topping, I chose spinach. I also tried the spinach manicotti and wasn't the biggest fan of it. The sauce was good, but didn't like how the pasta was wrapped and stuffed. It tasted sort of like a stuff shell with ricotta and mushroom. Loved the vibes, all locations are good and fair price for the food you get. read more

I was in school in Athens a quarter-century ago when DePalma's opened its downtown Athens location. DePalma's seemed like a breath of fresh air at the time, believe it or not: It used lighter, fresher ingredients than the standard red-gravy Italian restaurant, and it had a more sophisticated décor and atmosphere than the average college-town pizza joint. That was a long damn time ago. Today, DePalma's--even at this almost-as-old location out on the East Side--is a bit of a quaint throwback. Almost nothing about it has changed. I'm confident that the décor here has never been updated; it features, as it did in the '90s, dim but pleasant lighting, tall wooden booths, a wide variety of colorful wall hangings, and so on. It's now the restaurant equivalent of comfortable old shoes. Same deal with the menu: standard-issue pastas, basic green salads, chicken scallopini and parmigiana, etc. What gets DePalma's past its somewhat dated appearance and unadventurous menu is execution: Even if the food lineup is a bit old-hat, the kitchen does a nice job with everything--meat is cooked properly, items are nicely seasoned, and ingredients seem fresh. Entree prices are quite reasonable for the portion sizes. And for this college town, which like any other features a lot of inexperienced servers, I've always thought the service was solid, and it was on this night as well. You're not going to be floored by anything at DePalma's, but you'll likely be satisfied. read more

DePalmas on the Eastside used to be a very good restaurant....i took my parents there this evening (8/9/2021) for my dads bday, he turned 80. Our server was not good. Had it not been for a table behind us and their waiter passing by with extra waters, we wouldnt have had anything to wash our dinner down. Also another waitress brought us our drinks from the bar. When you have to rely on other servers to complete your meal, that doesnt speak highly of your server. He charged my dad for his dessert and he charged us for a beer we ordered but refused because it came 30 min later. It was a disaster And disappointing. Our receipt was adjusted which was nice. Perhaps lunch isn't the best gauge but frankly, there was nothing about our meal to entice me back for dinner. My eggplant parm sandwich was skimpy and nothin' special. Except the bread. It was crisp and good. My husband ordered the 'roasted pork with carmelized onion' sandwich. Again, good bread, mediocre filling. (Didn't taste like roast pork, to me.)
