Pretty disappointed for a 12.00 meatball combo. This was the first time I've ever received it only warm not hot. No plastic ware was included with the "hot" sandwich and looks like they are getting stingier with the cheese. Before it was covered in cheese and sauce and this time it was almost sauceless and you could see the clear circles of not quite melted cheese slices. I've never been one to crave a sub, because quite frankly if I want a sandwich I can make a pretty damn good one at home. But when compared to other subpar sub shops (Lenny's, Subway, etc.) Firehouse really hits the mark. My hot sandwich was just that, HOT, piping hot actually, even for a few minutes after it got to the table. I especially loved the pickle that accompanied the sub. I used a coupon and scored some free chips and a free drink. They have the Coca-Cola Freestyle soda dispenser, extra points there! The sub I tried was the smokehouse BBQ cheddar and my other half had the Firehouse hero, both done spectacularly and made with quality ingredients. The bread was the perfect amount of toasty and the cheese melted so picturesquely. I also liked how they had not one, not two, but about 20 different bottles of random hot sauces to use on your sub. My only complaint is they may want to consider cleaning the spouts off regularly since gunk tends to build up on them. Not a biggie, just one of the many details that restaurants sometimes tend to miss. Pricing was pretty reasonable, and you have the option to have half of the sandwich or the whole sandwich. The girl at the counter and the gentleman (he seemed like the owner) were very friendly and nice, and they encouraged us multiple times to come back again, which was very pleasant. Gotta tell ya'll a little story here. I used to be a really big fan of Firehouse Subs. And by a really big fan, I mean I'd go through those phases where I'd eat there every day then be disgusted with myself, then go back a week later and throw in a brownie for a little more self-punishment aaaand yep, there I was, eating there every day again. Just a general cycle of self-destruction and disgust. All brought on by the deliciousness of Firehouse. Then I became a vegetarian. I avoided Firehouse at all costs. Why even bother? The brownies weren't THAT good. And it was kind of out of the way. Truth be told, I wanted to go inside just for the smell. So there it was, Halloween weekend of 2010. I was STARVING and I was on my way back from the Wal-Mart at DeZavala...and Firehouse wasn't that far...and surely they had tuna right? But then Firehouse did me one better. They had a veggie sandwich. Was it the cheapest thing on the menu? Yes. Was it the best danged veggie sandwich I've had in my short time in San Antonio? This is my favorite sub place to go to during lunch. All of the employees are very friendly and patient in helping you pick the right sandwich for you. They have these random red buckets for sale in the back near the fountain drinks. I think I might buy one for no apparent reason at all. I love the selection of the different hot sauces, some of them (actually most of them) were pretty new to me, glad to have tried them out. They make hot sauces with ghost peppers in it, wow! Now if that doesn't tickle your taste buds, idk what will. All of the meats and cheeses they use tasted/appeared to be of good quality, and the chips are pretty standard no matter where you go. It's a bag of chips! Their cherry limeade was not all that great. When we went, someone who seemed like a franchise owner or management person was overseeing everything and he personally invited us to come back again, so everything ran very smoothly. I ordered firehouse subs on grubhub around 2:00pm. It originally said it would be here at 3:00. Then it switched to 3:30. Then it switched to 4:30. There wasn't a driver assigned to the order so I just decided to cancel it at 3pm. I then get a call from a lady at 4 (after the order has been canceled for an hour) yelling at me saying they've already prepared the food and that there is someone there to pick it up. I informed her that I had canceled the order over an hour ago before there was even a driver assigned to the delivery and she continued to yell at me and hang up on me. I had already received a refund and everything. Not sure what she wanted me to do or if this was an issue with firehouse or grubhub but she was very rude and it was unnecessary for her to call me and start yelling at me. read more

I'm not a huge fan of sandwich places, but Firehouse Subs is the best I've had anywhere. Unlike some chains that toast their sandwiches, Firehouse steams their subs to give them a unique texture. I know that sounds a little weird, but the result really is delicious. I've tried most of the sandwiches on the menu and I've been very impressed with all of them. My favorites are the New York Steamer (corned beef, pastrami & provolone) and the Cheddar Brisket. My wife likes the Turkey Bacon Ranch, which is also an excellent sandwich. They offer a choice of white or wheat bread, both of which are very good. Firehouse Subs features the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine, which enables you to mix a custom soft drink. I will NEVER return to this location on Babcock & Huebner. They have the worst customer service ever and definitely need to train their managers and employees on their customer service skills. It was the fist time me & my grandson decided to stop in since moving into the Medical Center area. I had read some great reviews about Firehouse Subs. Well in this instance, that was not the case! First, my grandsons grilled cheese was way under-cooked and he did not want it.(It looked like a slice of cheese melted between white bread) When I went up to have it fixed and have meat added to it, the manager (Miranda)said I would have to pay for them to make a whole new sandwich! (Mind you THE KIDS MEAL WAS FREE TODAY WITH PURCHASE OF ADULT MEAL!) I said "you have got to be kidding me right?" She said "yes, I am very serious, I have food cost and I'm not paying for your grandsons mistake!" This blew my fricken mind! I asked if there was someone above her I could speak with? She smiled and rudely said "No, I AM the manager of this store"....I then asked for her name & store # & she blatantly said, "it's printed on your reciept." Needless to say, I was so upset and almost in tears from embarrassment. I told my grandson to gather his things and we just left. I have never been talked to so rudely in any establishment and made to feel like I had did something wrong or that my grandson was to blame! I love their sandwiches. I would marry the New York Steamer if I could. Did I just say that? Yes I did and I don't care. The New York Steamer is loaded with Corned Beef Brisket and Pastrami and served hot with Provolone, Mayo, Mustard and Italian Dressing. It's just a perfect sandwich that is melt in your mouth delicious. I've had most of their sandwiches and they are all tasty, but the NYS is my fav!! The only reason I give this location four stars is because the service isn't always the friendliest or fastest. Side note: my Firehouse Subs cherry was popped in late 2002 in Jacksonville, Florida; the birthplace of this fine sub shop. I was soooo excited, as was my belly, when Firehouse Subs came to the Alamo City. I just wish there were more locations in San Antonio. read more

I love firehouse subs! This location is always friendly and helpful, and they have a great soda machine (I love rootbeer!). I love that they steam the meat so it is always warm and tasty - I usually order the hook and ladder light which is the perfect sized sandwich! I even have asked them to steam it extra to make sure its hot and they are very accommodating. My only complaint is the shredded iceberg lettuce they use, but no big deal, the sandwiches are still great. read more
