It's 11/12 and am still waiting to hear back on pricing for the sweep, as well as the gas log kit purchase and installation. As part of a remodel to update my 1970s era condo, I decided to replace an ugly, dangerously modified gas fireplace with an environmentally friendly electric one. I contacted a number of fireplace installation specialists, but chose Fireplace Freddie after an impressive on-site meeting with Kevin, the project manager. I knew the job would be complicated, based on the age of the building and by dent of it being a condo, but once the walls were opened, unforeseen challenges emerged. These included severe, structural termite damage requiring repair and replacement that the HOA board needed to approve, and complicated rewiring of circuitry required to comply with current building codes. Dealing with challenges like these is where the team at Fireplace Freddie really shined. Kevin, Thomas, Fernando, and Scott are true craftsmen. Each brought his experience and unique skills to the job and they worked together like a well-oiled machine. They always showed up on schedule and went above and beyond to ensure the job was finished beautifully and to code. It was a pleasure having them in my home. This may be one of the more expensive Fireplace Freddie gigs, but worth every penny! I was in process of buying a home and a friend told me this horror story of a Pacific Palisade home purchased with no fireplace inspection. Not want my home to burn down, I splurged for the $300 inspection and found 2 things: Potential firehazard and the 1994 earthquake had caused the chimney to be complete unstable. I asked for a bid which was like $9000 to restore/repair (if possible) and $14000 to repair/rebuild. Going back to my Realtor, we decided the Seller should pay 100% of 14K. The seller agreed. We contracted with Fireplace Freddie who is a real person to do the chimney job. It was a complicated complete re-build effort which took 7 weeks to finish. His guys were great and always polite. The job was completed and they dealt with 4+ inspections and the City of SaMo. These guys are excellent, professionals. All of the Realtors were so impressed, they took their contact information to utilize FF for future homes. My chimney is stable and built correctly. Not sure FF made any money on this job as the complexity was unbelievable, but I'd use/recommend him every time in the future. read more

He arrived masked, took great care to put down paper to protect our floor in all of the areas where he was to perform work and in between the fireplace and the door and got right to work. It took a couple of hours and he clearly did an extremely thorough job and afterwards gave me some quick instruction on how to get ideal use from our fireplace based on the sort of weird shape of our chimney and mantel, information I never would have known or found out on my own. I can't say enough great things about them. From Aiden, who was very patient with me when getting me a quote, to Edgar and his partner Francisco who did the actual work and Jorge who came out to inspect it. Edgar and Francisco worked sooooo hard! I don't know how they did it either. One of them was in a full body suit, I assume to protect them from everything in the chimeny and fireplace, for hours! When I first bought my home, I knew I had an issue with the fireplace; I got a few quotes from different companies to repair it, but I really liked the guys from this company. They came and gave me a quote, and explained everything they would do in advance. They came a couple of weeks later and did the work over a few days; they were so tidy, cleaned up every day, were polite and seemed to have done a great job. When it was finished, the paint in the fireplace was totally the wrong color, someone somewhere had made a mistake ........ they came back once I called them and freaked out a little, (I tend to do that); they gave me a couple of options of colors and it ended up working out fine. Almost a year later, I get a call from the company telling me they'd like to come and check on their work (that's a first!!!!!), so we made a date - I am really restricted on appt times, so they worked with me and two guys came last week and fixed a little crack, and spent a good amount of time checking everything. They were immaculately clean, extremely polite and seemed to really know what they were doing. They had little cameras to go up inside the chimney, and check everything properly. Now, I'm not a chimney expert by any stretch of anyone's imagination, but these guys seemed to know their stuff, and were really so nice to us, professional, well spoken ....... Fireplace Freddie just finished a complete rebuild of the 1934 chimney in the house we just bought. This was an excellent experience. The workmen were extremely neat and careful of our property, inside and out. When they tore. the old chimney down to the firebox they discovered some small cracks that weren't visible before they removed the stove inset to restore the orgnal log-burning configuration. This required. extra cutting and patching with diamond wire mesh, but they absorbed that cost. The fit and finish is first rate! Grest company to work with. Henry read more

This review is seventeen months in the making... In the two years after buying a house, I've done extensive projects, from plumbing and electrical to replacing the entire house foundation. I've worked with various companies but I've never experienced such an astonishing lack of skill, management, quality, efficiency, and communication as I have with FIREPLACE FREDDIE; so much so, I almost think that it must be a "front" for some clandestine illegal business. The job, which began in July 2013, was to take down an old chimney and install a new gas insert fireplace and venting. They underbid other companies because they used the wrong (cheaper, incorrect) firebox. I'd found the one I wanted, a see-through front to back unit, but the salesman sold me something that looked very similar (but less expensive). After installation, the Fireplace Freddie peeps failed to show up for the inspection, but the city inspector left a huge list of things that were done incorrectly. The most egregious issue was the fact the company installed an indoor/indoor fireplace. The rear portion was never meant to be exposed to outside, which was clearly indicated in the manual. Their response was to convince me to let them jerry rig it. Even if I hadn't refused, the city would have never allowed it. The second one they installed was indoor/outdoor, but was significantly smaller than the unit I wanted. There was so much space around it, the cat could easily stroll through the gaps around the firebox to the outside of the house. Finally, I insisted that they install the box that I had brought to them initially. I paid some more money, and signed a new contract. At this point Fireplace Freddie (mysterious owner who has never returned a call to this day) sent his lackeys to have me re-sign yet a third contract because he was now getting involved and he said the contract I'd signed (the one his people put together) would mean he'd lose money from all these bonehead mistakes. Uh no. Why would anyone in their right mind sign another contract so that they could pay more money to the people who are screwing them over? Well that didn't stop them. The smarmy sales guy lied to my face, I called him out, pointed to the binding second contract and asked them to finish. Again, they didn't show up for the inspection appointment that revealed further failures. This happened a lot, and the city inspector was as annoyed as I. When it was all said and done, the fireplace worked intermittently. They did come by to "fix" it but there was no change. This actually turned out to be a good thing, and maybe even saved my life, my roommates, and my pets. I hired the best - Boston Brick and Stone - to reface the fireplace, install the hearth and re-brick the ventilated chimney. Fireplace Freddie's work was so poorly done, Boston Brick were worried about moving forward. I delayed their start and hired a third party inspector to come and compile a list of everything still wrong with the firebox install and venting. That's when I found out the whole place could've burned. I also found at that the inspector I hired was coincidentally one that had inspected their work on my fireplace last year. He told me he had informed them of the incorrect firebox install, and they chose to keep it quiet. I gave Fireplace Freddie the option to fix everything on the list, or pay to have a reputable company do it. After another (out of pocket inspection), everything finally seems to be working, but man I really had to work for it. Do not use Fireplace Freddie. Pay more and go directly to Boston Brick and Stone. read more

I had a few bids for a back to back fireplace in the duplex we bought and although Fireplace Freddie were not the least nor most expensive (they were in the mid range of all the bids), they had the most thorough explanation of what needs to be done both to make it safe and to make it aesthetically better (I wanted a wood fire place converted into as with broken glass and a linear fire pattern). After much discussion (they were patient in answering all my concerns), they ended up working within my budget to get everything done. Freddie himself spoke to me to put me at ease and handed me over to James who is wonderful and attentive. He personally made sure that it was fixed per code and really compliments my interiors. There were a couple of issues that came up after the install because it was a new appliance model but they came back after I called them to fix it right away. First of all I have no idea what to do with a fireplace, let alone what to do when you hear the inspector tell you the fireplace in your new home is a "hazard", "lacks firestops" and could cost tens of thousands of dollars.
