While staying with my future in-laws, who live just a further up the way on Salt Point Turnpike, my fiance and I passed this place and decided to try it someday. Someday wound up being last night, and we were so pleased with this decision. The staff was definitely friendly - there was a bit of a wait and an overtaxed waitress due to a large party, but they positively fell over themselves to apologize for making us wait. We sat at the bar for about 20 minutes to wait for a table, and the extra time before ordering just allowed us more time to decide on what for dinner. We settled on a two-meat combo platter ($20) that came with two sides. What an excellent choice that was - tangy pulled pork, and the juicy, flavorful, clearly from-heaven tri-tip disappeared in no time between the two of us, as did the absolutely excellent onion rings and tasty mac n cheese. This generous platter could probably feed one super-hungry person, but it fed two regularly hungry people just fine. I was almost too full for dessert, but the fiance has this thing where he MUST order an apple cobbler if he sees it on the menu. We decided to split it, which was a fantastic decision - it's possibly the very best apple cobbler I've ever had, anywhere. I'm not a big apple cobbler fan, but this dish may have single-handedly changed my mind. The crunchy, baked-on top and the cinnamon-y, warm apple interior were superb. As was the ice cream on top - if it wasn't home-made, it tasted like it. I have spent many years living in Texas, and have tried barbecue throughout Texas, Colorado, California, and beyond, and no place, NONE, not a one-- had tri tip that compares to this place. The cut was extremely tender and juicy and melt in your mouth. I have been thinking about that dinner since I left two days ago. I was out visiting in-laws and have to say it is by far the best barbecue (at least the tri tip) that I have ever tried. I got the combo dinner: tri tip and roasted chicken and they were both delish. The mac and cheese was ok; the steamed vegetables were pretty tasty FOR STEAMED VEGETABLES. My husband brought tri-tip home and ate it the next day and was still in awe by it. Let me start by drooling over the amazing tenderness of their tri-tip mm mmmm. My husband and I tried this place on Sunday for the first time around 4pm for an early dinner. It was pretty empty, except at the bar where all of the locals stopped to stare at us newcomers as soon as we walked in. The bartender was pulling double duty as the waitress, so service wasn't too great. She forgot basic items such as napkins and plates but was prompt in bringing them when we asked. Two things that we've come to expect from BBQ joints are cornbread and bottles of sauce in different flavors to try. This place had neither, so that was a disappointment. We were a party of 8 and came early. Service was lacking, I kept looking for the waitress to get anything. It took 15 min from start to finish to get our dishes on the table they brought one by one. I ordered filet mignon and it had a strange texture, no flavor, the mushrooms on it were oily, no wine sauce like menu stated and not worth $30, not a normal mushroom sauce you'd expect. They added the tip to the bill which I would expect but I would ALSO expect them to inform us when handing over the bill. Part of my party didn't see this and almost added double so good thing I checked it. The rest of the food was mediocre to not so good. I have literally driven past this place for 20 years. Tonight we stopped. A local family joint for sure. Love the tavern aspect and the smokey smell in the air. I'll start off by saying the food is very good, in terms of BBQ. I had the tri-tip and baby back ribs and they were delicious. The mozzarella sticks were ok. The wings were good (nice and crispy) although lacking in heat. I will come back for the bbq. Where I was turned off started from the phone call to make reservations. They do not take reservations for less than 8 people. Fine. I can deal with that. It's your restaurant and you can dictate this based on demand. When we arrived, we were told the wait would be 20 minutes (we had a party of 5, including our little one, which required a high chair). 40 minutes later it was me that was checking in with the hostess and manager to see how our table was looking. Listen, I get that you want to keep customers, but we have a little one and you didn't check in with us at all until we came to you. 40 minutes is a long time for a 20-month old to be waiting. And add 10 minutes on after that. We were sitting after waiting 50 minutes. Additionally, a better approximation of wait time goes a long way for me. I don't get upset, I merely leave if the wait time is too long. Anyway, it's tough to enjoy a meal once you are frustrated from the get-go. We will try coming at a less busier day than a weekend. We were very pleased with this restaurant - I ordered the tri-tips steak roast, which I believe is more common out in colorado and the west coast, but they did a good job. It was very tender, almost as tender as a filet. The ribs were good - fall of the bone, also very tender. I usually prefer a bit more searing to finish ribs off, but these were fine. Also the French onion soup was very nice - good flavor, sharp cheese contrasting with mellow onions. The desert offerings looked great, but we didnt have time (or honestly, room!) for them. Came in for solo takeout, which can be depressing. But somehow it wasn't, thanks to some local color and what turned out in the end to be a very good meal. The scene at the bar as I walked in was classic: one guy with a full set of headphones up on his head, a couple of older guys talking loudly about sports and the gambling machines, and three waitresses standing talking with the bubbly blonde barkeep. Regulars drinking hard at 5:30pm, mostly beer. The place is actually quite pretty and easy to be in. Woody, lit but not bright. Clean and fresh. Anyway, the service was friendly and plenty efficient, if not super crisp. Prices are fair. I had the mesquite tri-tip, baked sweet potato and steamed broccoli sides. It was... really, really good! Plus some nice garlic rolls and a mush of cornbread. Lots o butter. Big food: I was full after about half but ate the rest anyway. Living in the area, my wife and I were looking for a new place to try. Local paper has and ad for a free appetizer, so we say let's try it. Place was full. Unpretentious atmosphere. Tri-tips were tender and fine. Sides no big deal. Upon checkout, however, they would not honor the free appetizer, which had a $7.95 limit. We had the grilled shrip (4 of them and not that great) for $8.95. I was fully prepared to pay the $1. Due to the deceptive advertising, we will not go back!! This is a very friendly down home BBQ place. They slow cook meats with delicious BBQ sauces. They have all the right sides, like shredded onions, fried of course! Salads and fish are good if you are watching your diet. Thanksgivings they slow cook turkeys overnight and provide a whole meal for 8 or 10 people for very reasonable amount. The mac and sheese tyasted homemade, not store bought or frozen and paired perfectly with the delicious pulled pork. The ribs fell off the bone, let me repeat, THE MEAT FALLS OFF THE BONE! the sauce wasn't your typical thick sweet sauce but more of a light weight tnagy taste that really displays the taste of the meat. the Tri-tips were my favorite though. all you need is a butter knife to cut through them and pop em right in your mouth. so freakin good! i already told my family they have to try it out. read more
