The saddest bar food Iv ever eaten. They changed the ENTIRE menu and don't have any original dishes, so the reviews now are misleading because it's not the same menu at all. Inside seating is spacious and it's very well decorated. They have a small menu for food and the drink menu had a good variety. Their Dutch Baby was sweet and nicely prepared; it's a baked pancake. The Dutch Baby was served freshly with maple syrup and grilled bananas. It's sweet and decadent! The Breakfast Sandwich was pretty plain, but still tasty. The cheese was melted and the egg was cooked well. The Fireside had a great dining environment if you're looking for something upscale. I was visiting from out of town. I picked this place because I'd been keeping up with their Instagram and liked the food and atmosphere they presented. When I arrived for lunch with my husband, service was slow. Maybe they were short handed or something, but we waited a while, and they forgot to bring out our appetizer all together. I was so sad because I really thought I'd like this place... BUT these guys totally redeemed themselves. The waitress apologized, and the manager (I assume) even came over let us know our appetizer would be on the house. It meant a lot to me. They were so genuine. It's my dream house kitchen goals haha.. anyhow, amidst all this craziness with the coronavirus, everywhere was closed but I stumbled upon this place that was just open for another hour so I went there for a quick drink and dessert to self celebrate after I passed my exam and wanted to do a little something for my bday. YUM! I had grilled romaine with smoke trout and it was delicious!!!! The smoke trout was perfectly smoked, sometime I end up with too salty with smoked fish, but this was perfect for my salad. My girlfriend had the avocado toast and the bread is a multigrain that was so awesome! Great food and great service. The guys had burgers and it was gone before I could even get a bite, so speaking for them, they loved it. I had a drink called the Bee Trapper that was perfect! The exterior doesn't give away it looks so beautiful on the inside. We went for a walk this morning, grabbed a coffee somewhere and spontaneously decided to have a late breakfast at this place. Being spoiled for choice by living in this area it was my first time since I moved here beginning of the year. Pleasantly surprised with the interior, a huge gorgeous piece of art all the way in the back. Our waitress was friendly (not super attentive. She was chatting with a nearby table and I simply didn't manage to get her attention... one of the other ladies kindly assisted). Lovely menu. My companion chose the classic eggs Benedict with Hollandaise sauce, bacon and hash brown. Very tasty, quite a big hash brown and eggs were made to perfection. I ordered the Lox Board. Now, I've lived in LA and New York and had many lox plates in my life. Truthfully I was a tad disappointed to see what was on that board for $15. Perfectly toasted bread, I gotta give you that. Absolutely loved the pickled red onion: usually it's raw onion and sliced waaaaaay to thick, but this was just perfect. House cured salmon was delicious. But: 3 small pieces? Guys, I couldn't even cover 1,5 piece of toast with this amount. For $15 I'd expect a little bit more of this goodness. Cucumber, thinly sliced and tasty. On top some charred lemon zest. So yes: tasty but in my opinion overpriced for what's in that board. Mimosa was ok. Not the best I've ever tasted. Will return because there's plenty on the menu I'd like to try. The eggs Benedict were $12 which made sense. My Lox Board was overpriced no matter how good your house cured salmon tastes. read more

let's talk about how i was recently on a third date at fireside and requested in a "hangry"/low blood sugar state that the waiter bring me a-- and i quote-- "heaping mound of mashed potatoes." i believe the instructions were something to the effect of "forget your cute fancy small side dishes, go get me the largest bowl you can find and just fill it with mashed potatoes." i was met with a *fist bump* from this amazing waiter, offering his respect and subsequent condolences to the poor man on a third date with a (hot, but) crazy girl. the kitchen staff was like, "challenge accepted!" and seriously raised their side dish game to meet the demands of "table for two by the firepit". sidenote: i normally request that the gravy be set aside or left off entirely, because, you just never know what these hipsters are gonna sneak in there. but i must have forgotten to request this and was delightfully surprised at how exceptional and classic it was! by this portion of the date i think i was moaning something about "crack gravy" and ordering seconds. my date most likely jumped to the wrong conclusion when i was in the bathroom a long time, little did he know i was just admiring how much i prefer the darker gray grout (vs. white) that they chose for their tiled walls and also the drool worthy live edge wood bench they have in their extremely cute pinterest-board bathroom. in conclusion: go to fireside. it is a fabulous spot for dates, small groups, or as i've also learned, for drinking a craft cocktail at the bar by yourself when a guy dumps you after a third date. read more

Another stop on our customized bar hopping tour in Portland. We were walking down 23rd street when we stumbled on this place. We were initially intrigued because of their door handle... it's shaped like an axe! We grabbed a seat at the bar right away and each grabbed one of their $3 tall boy beers. One thing I have to say is: God Bless America and their cheap liqour (compared to Canada, at least). We just missed their brunch hours by about 20 minutes, but when we looked at the menu the food looked delicious. It had your typical brunch fare, with an added west coast twist. The vibe in Fireside is very laidback and cozy. They have a lounge on the right side of the entrance with a big fireplace where you can order food or have a drink. Then they have a big seating area with lots of tables on the opposite end of the bar. The restaurant has lots of windows that look onto the vibrant 23rd street, which make for great people-watching opportunities. While I didn't have any food during my recent trip to Fireside, my experience was still great. I mean, who can say no to $3 beers? I sure can't. Would definitely recommend if you're on 23rd looking for a place for drinks. read more

The service was very good. The dining area was clean and very attractive. I ordered the pork loin. The potatoes were nearly raw, so I politely sent it back. Who I assume was the chef brought me my new plate, made a very awkward joke, offered no apology, and left. The potatoes were then only half cooked, and the pork was incredibly dry. I cannot fathom the good reviews here. My wife and I had dinner here and it was dreadful. The "grilled bread with olive butter" was basically white toast and some whipped butter with olives added; it would have been bad had it been free, but they charge $5 for it. My hamburger was completely flavorless, the lettuce and pickles had no crunch at all, the bun was flavorless and falling apart, and the patty tasted as much like beef as McDonald's hamburgers do. The broccoli rabe was well-cooked but tasted mainly of "sour" (and it came with sliced almonds for some reason. They added no flavor and you couldn't pick them up with your fork. As near as I can tell, they were there to add "class" to the dish. The service was also dreadful. The second beer I ordered before our entrees arrived did not come until the waitress was coming to clear the dinner plates. I am completely at a loss to understand how this place is still in business, let alone getting good reviews here. There are far far better places. (Oh, and this place isn't cheap--my hamburger, my wife's chicken, the bread, broccoli, and two beers ran to $62.) read more

I have two issues with this place, but I will say the food is very good and prices are reasonable for city dining. Unlike almost any restaurant you will go to, especially at these price points, bread is NOT included. Not serving bread is one thing, but when a server comes over and asks if you want bread, and then charges you for it, that's not right. It's deceitful. I had not even looked at the menu yet or I would've realized bread is actually an appetizer. That in itself is very odd. It would be like if the waiter asked if you wanted water and then brought Evian and charged you for it. That was my only major fault with Fireside. As I said, food was very good and portion sizes were ample...except for the wine. My only other issue was that the wine at $14-$16 per glass should not look like a quarter of a glass. Everything is reasonable except the price of wine. That is astronomical. If you can overlook those two issues, then dinner is very enjoyable. read more

My sister and my niece all wanted vegetarian food, although not a vegetarian place, our food selection was great. We had beet chips with Harissa spice. Grilled bread and olive with butter. Then we had side of their Brussels sprouts and squash drizzled with maple. We also tried their mushroom risotto with toasted hazelnuts. We also had their grilled romaine salad with smoky barley. Just so there's no mistake, the food is really good here. What seriously lacked was the service. When we first arrived, we stood at the podium waiting for someone to acknowledge or seat us, since there was no hostess in sight. She walked out from the kitchen after a few minutes and said she'd be right with us. Once seated, the waitress came to take our order pretty quickly, but I wasn't ready yet so she said she'd be back which was great. However we didn't see her again until later in the meal. We eventually caught the attention of the hostess and told her we were ready to order to which she replied, "ok I'll let your server know", then looked at us quietly for a few moments until I asked what she needed. Apparently she meant she would take our order and relay it to our server (which is admittedly cool) but the delivery was awkward. When the food came out it was hot and delicious, especially the bread/bun. However when we asked for dipping sauce, it never came, and a second drink order arrived after we had finished our meal. Being so easily forgotten when you're paying the prices they're charging is a little irritating. I likely won't be back. Closer to 1.5 stars. My boyfriend and I happened upon this place after a long day of exploring Portland. We were both hungry, and since there was no wait we decided to try it out. We were seated at this small table next to a window. It had a nice view of the street--it was around 8pm so the trees were lit with Christmas lights. Next to our table there was a fireplace on the wall which was a cool touch. The ambiance can be described as modern and rustic. That is the end of what was good with our experience. To start, we ordered drinks. I ordered an iced tea and my boy friend ordered a coke--they only had Mexican coke with no refills, oh well. Anyways, after about 5 minutes our drinks arrived. My iced tea was under steeped, so I had a large glass of watery unflavorful $3 tea--yum... I ordered the braised buffalo, as recommended by our waitress. It was meh. The braised buffalo was pretty tough, not soft and tender like most braised meats are. It was served with sour cream and butter mashed potatoes, which were good but then again when you add butter and sour cream to potatoes you really can't go wrong. It was also served with butternut squash--a whole three bites worth. When I finished my meal I was still hungry. I joked it was a $25 "snack". My boyfriend ordered the three course special. It started with a butter lettuce salad. It was lettuce with some pistachios thrown on top, and a generic vinaigrette. The entree was confit of chicken. It came with one piece of chicken which was excruciatingly dry. Underneath was bland, overcooked Israeli couscous. The garnish on the plate proved to be very bitter, and left a bitter aftertaste. This dish needed some sort of sauce, aside from the chimichurri, to balance out the dryness of the chicken and give some flavor to the couscous. The last course was a orange rhubarb upside down cake with whipped cream. It was super small, and the cake itself was dry but the whipped cream helped compensate for the dryness. The cake was mediocre at best. My boyfriend, with three courses, also left hungry. We got to enjoy a $60 (not including tip) unfilling and unsatisfying meal. We will NOT be returning. If I am going to be spending 30$ a person on a meal, I want to leave feeling either full or at least that the quality of the food I ate was worth the money. In a spot that used to be a soap store and movie theatre, Fireside has some potentially big shoes to fill. It's a very dramatic spot to open a restaurant. Instead of playing to the drama of the spot, they use the marquee as their sign, and simply acknowledge the architecture of the spot by building around it. It's a simple decor choice that makes Fireside a low-key place to eat and hang with friends. After eating here twice, I can comfortably say that PDX Fireside is becoming one of our favorite nearby go-to dinner spots. It's a great neighborhood spot with high-quality food and drinks. The pickle plate is a real stand-out. They experiment with a variety of seasonal vegetables and fruits. While I didn't love the strawberries, the cucumbers, asparagus and eggs were all excellently pickled - and I'm not usually a fan of pickles! The hamburger is one of the best I've had in Portland. The right thickness, fat content, and outside crispness of the meat, along with a lightly grilled bun. Very, very tasty. You should definitely try out the s'mores for dessert.
