Came for Portland Dining Month and got to eat by the fireside at The Fireside. (: We had to call to make a reservation, and the minimum was 6 people. We got a cozy booth next to the fireplace. The first course was a savory truffled potato soup with almonds that came in a cute little cauldron with a delicious, slightly sweet, parker roll on the side. I chose the hanger steak for my second course, cooked medium, and it was tasty but a little chewy. The flavors were really good but I could've done without some of the big chunks of salt. The confit potatoes and brussel sprouts that came with it were tasty too! I was least excited with the dessert, mainly because I'm not a fan of bleu cheese, and the ice cream literally had chunks of it in it. The brioche and bacon bits on it were delightful though. Im tempted to give this place a 1 star review but they did comp our food, so 2 star it is. We came here for Saturday brunch. Called ahead for reservations. Sat down at our outdoor patio table within 15 mins which is great. We were freezing, the heaters kept going off and need a propane tank change. Our coffee and tea took 15mins to come and our food took another 45mins. Not only were we freezing our butts off with no food, when the food did come; it was stone cold. My friend's benedict was so cold, the hollandise sauce congealed. The waitress also spilled half of the other plate's sauce on the ground. Let me disclaimer, I detest NW 23rd. It was cool to move and live there in my 20's, but now an over-run, tourist area and parking, oh the parking. Who would of have thought the old Music Millennium that was dark inside, would be aired out with windows and modernized with bamboo, fireplaces and a giant mural. I want my house to look like this. On a beautiful spring day, everyone was at outside tables enjoying deconstructed food (see the S 'more pic). Had a most excellent lamb kebob on arugula with pickled white strawberries and buffalo mozzarella. Washed it down with a kolsch. My only thing was the waitress failed as promised to tell me when happy hour was ending so I could get my food order in. We made reservations which were easy to do o Resy for a Saturday night double date dinner. We ordered the meat and cheese tray that had two meats that we're in total about 1oz and three different cheeses that were about 2oz in total. Oh I forgot to mention there was a smear of stone ground mustard and a smear of jelly with a couple of red grapes(3) and a few pickled veggies. It also had like 7 pieces of very thin sliced bread on it not enough for four people to share. I was totally disappointed because this tray was $30!! Now we get to the salad portion. I ordered a salad with grapefruit on it. It was decent but way to small for the $16 price. The mussels were good and Mary's brick chicken was good. The service was good and that is the only reason we are giving this place a three star. This restaurant is overpriced and we will not be going back. read more

After what appeared to be an extremely labored walk towards this treasure chest of bars, we sat ourselves down at the fireside to enjoy whatever was left of happy hour. Cool rustic ambiance, large bar area for those needing a break from that long day at work, and a few tables for those wishing for more intimate conversation. We got a few snacks, both quite interesting and recommended by their staff. One was a pate which I did enjoy despite minor issues with its texture, the other were lamb corn dogs. The drinks unfortunately didn't strike our fancy. it could have been just from comparison since we had stopped at a long list of bars over the last few nights. I don't have high aspirations for 23rd, since gentrification in general also brings bland overpriced food offerings. That said, I think i have my found my go-to/all-else-fails restaurant in this neighborhood. Staff is ultra friendly, food is delicious, and ambiance is perfect near the fire on a cold Portland evening. We had: Brick chicken- probably the best dish of the night. the perfectly moist chicken and the corn saute was delicious. Upon first bite, it had the slight taste of buttery popcorn. Seared albacore - cooked perfectly on the outside, silky soft and raw on the inside, paired with a melange of tomatoes, briney olives, and fest parsley. Delicious and balanced Trout - oh my god. delicious, herb laden, lemon kissed, and NO BONES! Winner. Lamb chops - perfectly seared and cooked. The butter knife had a bit of difficulty cuttin this, but slide right through as it got to the center. Beets - decent. I liked the roasted apple--gave it contrast Desserts were okay. Panna cotta had too much gelatin and the raspberries were a bit bland, and had some odd salty component that didn't sit well with all of us. The chocolate pot de creme fared better, but not by much. I tasted more pralines more than chocolate, and the texture wasn't as smooth, said some of my friends. Tracy was an absolutely fabulous server, I also love a place that works like a give. When someone sees something that needs to be done they swoop in to make it happen. An amazing staff and a great night. The food is always so good and the service so spot on. It makes that time with loved ones special. The place is cozy, hip, funky Portland! Great in summer when they open the walls up but SO perfect for a chilly day in the fall or winter (or let's face it, springtime in Oregon). This is one of our favorite spots on 23rd, great ambiance, great service, and great food. They have some of the most interesting cocktails I've seen, one that has smoke in the bottle that they pour over a large ice cube. I love to sit at the bar and tell the bartender what type of drinks I like and have them come up with something great for me. Parking is extremely doable in the area, but I say this as a San Franciscan, so this may mean little. Made it in here for the last 15 minutes of happy hour on New Year's Eve and ordered the truffle fries, trout, pork rillettes with the Scoffaw (whiskey cockatail) and the Pegu Club (gin cocktail). Strong drinks that swing to the sweet side. Drinks came out fast, and the happy hour items took some time, surprisingly. We received our dinner orders (meat snack board and the mussels) well before the fries even came out. Well, we had to remind them about the fries, but oh well. We obviously and unregrettably over-ordered for this meal. All of the bread on the side came out hot and crispy, and we devoured all of it with that delicious rillette. The pork rillette was also a part of the meat snack board and I am in love with how perfect the taste and consistency is. We might have lived without the meat board, as the salami was basic and the chicken liver mousse was too rich for our liking. We also couldn't eat 90% of it because we were just too damn full. The two of us LOVED the mussels in the spicy chickpea stew, but did not like the black garlic crostini that came on the side at all. It just clashed with the mussels and the chickpeas. Those chickpeas absorbed all the right flavors, MMMMM. Service was decent, although a bit... awkward at times. Will definitely return! read more

It was a cold, icy, January day out in Portland and we were looking for a place for food and warmth. We had just finished a little hike through Forest Park, and what better place to go than The Fireside?! Walked in, greeted by a gentlemen who seemed a little stand off ish but let us have the large table by the fire (we were a party of 6). The girls were excited to sit against the fire and warm up, it was GREAT. We made it just in time for the end of lunch. Their lunch menu had soup, salad, burgers, sandwiches, and a few other things. Our table had some of their bread and olive butter, which was amazing! I could have probably eaten a whole bowl of that. Beet chips, yummy, nothing extraordinary. The French Dip? comments were that it was a great size and the meat was good but the Au jus was very brothy and not too flavorful. WHich it seemed to be because it was very light and almost clear. The cheeseburger, only good things came from that. And the Reuben, looked amazing! The bread was great, the white and brown swirl type, I always forget what it is called. I had the grilled white cheddar cheese and daily soup which was a creamy potato with greens on top. Wow it was so good. One side of my grilled cheese was burnt but I think it's their thing... one side of our olive toast was burnt too. If you don't like that, just let them know! The soup, was really good. I definitely should have just went with a big bowl because it had just the right amount of flavor and salt! Now one thing that had tooooo way way tooooo much salt was the side of fries. It was drenched in salt... the fries that came with the sandwiches did not though... weird. Staff was great, our waiter, busser, and the bar tender were all wonderful! I am not sure who seated us, but we never saw him again... maybe he was on his way out? The bill? I would say a little above average for the price. But nothing crazy. I had the burger and it was a good midday meal. My table mates partook in the Ruben sandwich and the grilled cheese. Glowing reviews from each. The fireplace in the main dining room and the large bar that invites you into the restaurant also make the place a comfortable spot to rest and regroup. Popped in for happy hour and was pleasantly surprised by how lovely it is inside. The lamb corndog and pickle plate were very good and beautifully plated. The bartender was kind enough to answer some of my questions about their drink menu without the attitude you can sometimes get from others for not knowing what Fernet Branca is. So kudos to him for being patient and knowledgeable. The ambiance is what I really enjoyed. We got a table by the windows so we could dine and do some people watching. Nice ambiance and location, like that they serve dinner and drinks late. Food is mediocre and overpriced. They charged me for 1 extra round of 3 drinks (like $40) that I never ordered/received. Was a $240 tab for the table and since I was paying and didn't want to make it awkward and say something to the waiter in front of my guests, just let it go. Kinda whack though that they would either not know what they had done, or that they would do that stuff on purpose. Just heed my advice and check your bill for drink overcharges if you ever go. And don't go hungry, enjoy it for what it is - a nice bar on NW 23rd. read more

I love this place. I've only been here once for Sunday brunch, but it was awesome. I had the best biscuits and gravy that I've ever had in Portland, Oregon. (I'm from Texas and hard to please when it comes to biscuits and gravy. Now it wasn't your typical gravy and I. Fact I'm not sure it should be called gravy. But whatever it was, it was rocking. Brought some friends to The Fireside from out of town. I raved to them about the fried Brussels sprouts which are amazing. But alas no Brussels sprouts on the menu. The mixed green salad and fries were excellent. I had the Beyond Burger, other than the burger, it was good. A note for mgmt: I prefer the Impossible Burger's flavor and texture. The service was amazing from the host to the server. The fireplace was a pleasure as it was a rainy eve. Once those Brussels sprouts return, I'll be there! Pulled up a seat at the bar, the atmosphere was comfortable, the music was enjoyable, and the service was pleasurable. Ordered a starter, loved to tell you the name, but I can't remember and I'm sure everything is delicious so it doesn't matter what I ate! I'll just include a photo. That's good enough. Ordered a starter (small plate) got substituted with beet chips instead of regular chips....and I was so thrilled they did that. Omg those beets chips are amazing! Had a an asparagus plate to follow, and a large plate with a spread. I went there with the intentions of consuming, meets, cheeses, and carbs...mmmm....carbs. I also got a soft boiled egg on everything. Be still my heart. I hope I can figure out how to make my own soft boiled eggs just as delicious as fireside. This restaurant has great energy any time I've frequented for Happy Hour and regular dinner service. My go to is the Smoked Trout with Pickled Onions, Mustard, and Crostini. I'd say it's my favorite smoked trout platter in town and the portion is just right for HH. Loved how they served my dirty martini in a gimlet glass (feels less pretentious and more stable) and provided an olive pit cup 1. so you know what to expect when you bite down and 2. to keep things classy. Really hip decor. Blend of modern and rustic cabin. Vibrant atmosphere. The music was way too loud and hard to have a conversation without shouting, but it was New Year's Eve. The staff was excellent. Friendly and attentive. We especially like the hostess who was a tall silver goddess in her New Year's Eve outfit. The food was outstanding! Saffron Risotto, prime rib, French dip and burger for the four of us. Warm smoked olives are a must for an appetizer. The desserts sounded great but we were too full. What a charming place! I happened upon Fireside by accident, awaiting the opening of another place where I was to meet a friend. If I didn't have plans already, I would have stayed as the food passing by me looked fabulous. That the burgers were to die for--not only by sight--was confirmed by one of the patrons sitting up at the bar rail with me. I enjoyed delicious French fries and beautiful cocktails crafted by the wonderful Hannah while I internally drooled and regretted (kind of) that I had somewhere else to be. Can't wait to go back and have a Walk in the Woods: gin, cider and rosemary sprigs set on fire. Who wouldn't love that! read more
