Running a restaurant on the busy strip of 23rd is a tough thing to do. That being said, Fireside fits into the demographic of 23rd. I think the restaurant ambience appeals to people in their twenties/thirties or hipsters for lack of a better term. The decor was very open. From street view, it seems like a small restaurant, but when you walk inside you can notice how roomy it feels with the tall ceilings. I think an important aspect to dining on 23rd is outdoor seating. Fireside seems to have this down pat. In addition, eating inside feels like your outside at the same time. With the open environment, warm and breezy weather, sitting next to the fireplace really makes the dining experience comfortable. Alright enough about the setting. Lets talk food. My girlfriend and I were looking for something refreshing to eat to compensate the hot weather. I ordered the braised lamb sandwich and my girlfriend ordered the steak salad. The braised lamb sandwich came with a simple side salad with sliced daikon. Don't get me wrong the sandwich was full of rich flavors from the mustard bbq sauce. However, for thirteen dollars the portion size seemed a bit small. I was not full after finishing my plate as well as a few bites of the steak salad. The steak salad also had a lot going on flavor wise. However, the flavor was not cutting it for me personally. I am not a fan of earthy or bitter vegetables which is what I strongly tasted from the Belgian endive. It was also too crisp for my liking. If you are a fan of radicchio salads then you will like the endive. I do love the PEARing of fruits and veggies which I was hoping to get from the d'anjou pear but there was only one slice of pear. The bleu cheese was too clumped together and mushy which made it hard to spread evenly throughout the salad. The salad was a very small portion as well and was not worth 12 dollars in my opinion. I would much rather get a steak salad at home. The steak definitely made the salad as it should. As soon as I tasted the steak I thought, "Fireside". It tasted as if it was wood fired and the seasoning made for a flavorful bite. Overall, the dining experience was still enjoyable, but the food portion wasn't enough to have me completely satisfied. read more

I know what you're thinking--ANOTHER restaurant on 23rd selling high-priced American Nouveau? Parking's going to be a mess and it's going to be packed! Not worth it. You're right. And you're wrong. Yes, Fireside's location means you may take forever to find parking, and depending on the time you go there may be a long wait, but at the end of day, it's definitely worth it. I love Fireside--the decor is strange, modern, and cool. It's located in the old Music Millennium space (which then became a used bookstore, which became a free bookstore.... anyways, I digress). The long and slender restaurant includes mini fire-pits and a bathroom you can't find. Just kidding--it's just strangely designed/hidden (very cool!). I wouldn't consider it too spendy (a full meal for four of us, with appetizers and drinks, was less than $150), but definitely a place to have a nice dinner with your loved ones. Ok, fine, we were just there for drinks. They weren't crowded, it was getting late and there were several open tables. Did we deserve to be ignored for 20 minutes? Let me back up. My date and I had already eaten dinner, it was about 9:30 and were just walking up and down 23rd. Fireside was new so we decided to check it out. We told the hostess we were just getting drinks and since it was a beautiful night, asked if we could sit outside. She seemed irked, but she accommodated us. And then she apparently went back and told the wait staff that the freeloaders at table whatever were just ordering drinks. The same two waiters literally walked by our table 8 times before we actually had to flag one of them down. I argued that we should just leave, but Melany, my date, was not about to be beaten: "Excuse me, will you be our server tonight?" she asked as one of them tried to scurry by unnoticed. "Oh, uh, sure, what did you guys need?" And that's pretty much how it went. We had two drinks each (had to flag him down for the second drink as well) and I will say that the Old Fashioned was good. Really good! But if Fireside has a habit of ignoring a table just because their order might come out to somewhere under $50, I think I'll pass. Come on Fireside, this is Portland! There is no shortage of great places to eat and drink. Had the service been better, we would have been back sometime. We would have given you more money! Exploring the neighborhood on a Saturday and popped in here for brunch. No wait whatsoever (for brunch? In Portland??? Go figure). The ambiance is lovely and the service is off the charts (another Portland surprise!). But the food takes the show -- delicious cinnamon roll, biscuits and gravy, and French toast. We stumbled upon this place last weekend while in the neighborhood for ice cream. They had one table left outside and snagged it before someone else did. Although the inside is super cool, with a nice vibe and vast, impressive bar. The windows open up to create an indoor/outdoor feel so if you're sitting along the window and they're open, you'll feel like you're dining outside anyways. The menu was rather small but with things that looked appetizing to both my husband and I. After deciding if we wanted brunch or lunch, we both settled on burgers. They were cooked perfectly for how we ordered them, and the standard toppings for the restaurant were cheese, onions, lettuce and a special thousand island type sauce - very tasty. My one knock are the fries, as they're basically shoestring fries, not very substantial with a burger, and then homemade ketchup that just isn't very good - lumpy and bland. The drink list was good, with seasonal brews on tap and a nice variety of everything. We'll definitely be back! read more

The only reason it has four instead of five stars is that the portions were small and over priced, but thats to be expected with how great the ambiance is. We were staying in the neighborhood and noticed the cute marquee and large windows of The Fireside upon our first pass. The space is well designed, in a rustic modernist sense. We sat at the bar while waiting only fifteen minutes for a table. The mixed drinks were well balanced and dignified. The food tasted as beautifully as it was presented. Everything was made to perfection! The Baby it's Mulled Outside seasonal cocktail was very good and fruity. The Barratta was delicious! The pear was a great texture and the cheese was fresh and delicious. The perfect pairing and a great starter. The pork stroganoff was different, but nice and creamy and the mushrooms were perfectly prepared. The trifle for dessert was perfectly balanced. Not too sweet but still a great dessert!!! Waited forever to receive undercooked steak and raw burger. Both had clearly been charred on the outside underdone on inside. Had to leave and frankly should have said something earlier but we waited long enough as is and we had to leave. They comped us for a side order of brussel sprouts but really??? I actually brought up poor experience to manager which I rarely ever bring up poor meal experiences nd she kept saying that they could have just "put the meat back on". Will never be back - not because of the food (which to be fair the brussel sprouts were excellent and we had eaten there before with good food) but was very disappointed in how they handled it. While walking along NW 23rd, on a rather cold fall evening, we stopped inside to have a drink. This place is really beautiful at night, I love the concrete floor, and the large windows and cool fireplace. We did not stay to eat, but would like to return here to try it out, next time we are in Portland. It is this type of place that make me want to move to Portland. read more

I had a lot of fun at the Fireside. The ambiance was warm and inviting. The lighting at the bar really caught my attention. The waitress was great and the food was even better. The pickled plate was a appropriately sour and I loved the egg and strawberries (cue Portlandia pickling episode - you can pickle anything!). Perfect portions. Everything was flavourful, and perfect temperature. Good Drinks. Good Service. Atmosphere is busy but not too loud (but this was on a Wednesday) The pear burratta is delicious and a perfect meld of subtle flavours. The lambchops are a great medium-rare, with a perfect char and paired with flavourful lentils. The butterscotch trifle is the perfect sweetness and is perfectly paired with a dark chili ate ganache. I will not be back. My first visit to the fireside l only had an okay time. I ordered the muscles. When you order muscles you expect excellence, especially being in a coastal state and especially considering the price point. They tasted much less than fresh, but the cocktails were good. I was encouraged to revisit The fireside, this time we came with a larger party of gals for a going away party. First, being a larger party we expected an automatic gratuity. Although when the auto- grat is so high it does not inspire above and beyond performance. Our server was lazy, and inattentive. My hunny and I were particularly hungry so we ordered two items each to share. To our utter disappointment the portions were OFFENSIVELY small. $13 for five slices of cheese and a smear of jam? Food is tastey, but come on...your food is not that precious. We left $60 in the hole, and still hungry. Overall, I am extremely disappointed overall. Quite frankly, the only reason I gave one star is due to the atmosphere. Very cool, hip place with great ambiance. This place has wonderful potential, and honestly if it's main purpose is to be a watering hole the menu NEEDS a good burger. read more

We arrive by cab and giggled because we had no idea there was only about six blocks from our hotel. Either were getting really really old or seems like a stretch. We just happen to arrive at happy hour and the menu is very limited but it was also very good. I ended up having a half a grilled cheese sandwich with a cuppa soup a curry vegetable that was outstanding. Kind of an odd choice for 90° day but nonetheless I was feeling brave I arrived in a cab. Nothing fancy nothing grand great open windows allowing the night breeze to kiss our dewey skin. IReally did enjoy my meal and my company and it was just another great night in the city. read more

the worst experience i've ever had a restaurant. the server had a TERRIBLE attitude from the jump. she was extremely passive aggressive with my bf "if you want to have a conversation put your mask on". we were not aware of this restaurants covid rules. usually when you sit down at other restaurants you're free to take your mask off. regardless me and my boyfriend quickly put our masks on and she sarcastically said "magical" .... what kind of service is that? Bad slow service, incompetent waitress and subpar food. my husband and i came to this restaurant on a tuesday around 12pm. There were maybe 3 other small tables. first, my husband had a coffee from another restaurant in a cup and the waitress made him pour it into their mug. We ordered an omelet and I had a salad. Our order took 45 minutes to get to us!! The waitress avoided eye contact and didn't even bother coming to check on us and why we were waiting for our meal. The things we ordered are so basic. An omelette takes 10 minutes to make and a salad?! come on! At one point, my husband signaled to another waitress to get her attention and ask what was taking so long. Came in for a lazy Sunday brunch/lunch after strolling around the Alphabet district. Food: I ordered a frittata and biscuits + gravy. I thought the frittata was a bit dry, but that's probably just me, I like saucey food. I ended up liking the biscuits and gravy more because there was more sauce. But both dishes were very delicious! And I LOVED the presentation of the dishes! Very rustic and hipster! Ambiance: Very clean and upscale, hipster, rustic looking. There is a very neat looking fireplace in the restaurant. I enjoyed sitting next to it. The walls are lined with windows that can open and on a nice day, it's really nice to people watch out the windows while you are enjoying a nice brunch/lunch. Service: Hands down the most sincere, nicest and best service I've had in a LONG time! Everyone here felt genuinely nice and friendly! From the host, to the waitress, to the bus boy, everyone was really happy to serve you! And it didn't even feel fake or forced or anything! BRAVO! I love your friendly smiley faces! My group had a wonderful experience at The Fireside on NW 23rd. There were eight of us on a Saturday night celebrating multiple birthdays. I made reservations for the group in advance. When we got to the restaurant we were seated in a large booth next to the fire pit. We all got drinks and the waitress even suggested a specialty cocktail not on the menu. To start we shared the flat bread pizza and grilled bread with olive butter. They even brought extra bread when we ran out but had some butter left. For dinner several people had the brick chicken, someone had the polenta, another person had the grilled lettuce, the trout and lastly the short ribs. Everyone loved what they got! For dessert they brought out a s'more for each of us. Our waitress was wonderful! She was happy to explain each dish and really excited about the food. Gratuity was added to our bill because of our group size. I don't know if they have a policy about splitting the bill but we were able to split it 3 ways. My first time at this restaurant and I was impressed. Our server was the actual owner of the place and she was so sweet. I ordered the brick chicken and it was the best chicken I've had in a while. My husband ordered the salmon, which he mentioned was a little bit salty, but he loved the mushrooms in it, and our friends ordered the mussels and steak. After we ate, we were more than satisfied. This was 4.5 stars. Food: pig candy, soft boiled egg with bacon aioli, smoked braised bison tri-tip special, and jerk chicken. Drinks: Backyard Grilling, A Warm Fire. The only misses were the egg starter and A Warm Fire. The egg was executed well and tasty but the composition doesn't make a lot of sense. What am I supposed to do with potato chips, boiled egg, and aioli? The Warm Fire wasn't smoky or spicy or otherwise notable; a perfectly average drink, nothing wrong but nothing to recommend it. I have been here once before for dinner before COVID. It was just okay and really had no need to go back. But a friend wanted to get brunch, sit outside and NW 23rd and Bloody's were must. Showed up around 12:45 p.m. on a Sunday and told that it was about a 15 minute wait, although I could see vacant tables. Okay, got it - people on the list before me. BUT there weren't. Stood there for almost 15 minutes until the hostess/waitress had time to seat us. Then we sat there for another 15 minutes and no one ever came over. So, a waitress was passing and I asked her if we could order some drinks. She took the drink order and then said "I will make sure your server brings them out to you." But it ended up she was our server. The food was just okay, bad presentation and service horrible. We both ordered different versions of eggs benedict. Bloody's are good but basic. Let's just say it looked like our food was just thrown onto our plates, the poached eggs tasted like vinegar, the hash browns looked they came out of a frozen Ore Ida bag and the English Muffins were tough as nails. It was really sad and wait staff doesn't care. Only when we were ready to pay, did anyone really give us any attention. Go elsewhere. read more
