Food. I was a little disappointed in the food with the kabobs and crab cakes being average bar food quality. The brussel sprouts and apple cobbler, however, were excellent. Service was adequate. Servers were great but one plate and a fork still had crusted food on it. Not the end of the world, but probably still not acceptable? Ambiance. The physical space is nice, modern and cozy feeling, but the dude sitting at the bar wearing a tank top killed the vibe. Consistently good food and service. I've enjoyed everything I've eaten here, and they have a perfect medium rare cook on their steak when I've had it added to a salad. Burger and fries also hit the spot. Love the ambiance and patio when the weather is nice. Didn't love the old fashioned my husband ordered on one visit, but I think it's the only miss. It was pre-made and I wonder if that was part of the reason it wasn't great. As an aside, love their bourbon glasses. Kind of wanted to steal it. read more

I have been looking for a modern restaurant/bar that has a cozy vibe, specifically, one with a fireplace. It's not easy, so when I came across pictures of this place, I wanted to try it. We've been to Portland multiple times and I always missed an opportunity to visit, until last night. We are in town to celebrate my wife's birthday, so I managed to get a reservation for 9:00 pm. When we arrived, we were immediately seated, and we got to sit right in front of their big fireplace near the entrance. This was the cozy vibe we were looking for. The music was upbeat but chill, and the service was great. The food menu was not big, but everything on it sounded good. We ordered some the cheese and charcuterie board, Brussels sprouts, half roasted chicken, ribeye kabobs, and the French dip. Everything was AMAZING. Very delicious. The charcuterie board had a great and tasteful variety, the chicken was very tender and juicy, the French dip was delightful, the kabobs grilled perfectly, and the Brussels sprouts.. OMG..bomb. So far, the best I've had in any restaurant. We also ordered their spiced Bundt cake and it was very yummy. What a great way to finish our meal. Honestly, one of my new favorite spots. The vibe was exactly what we had hoped for, the food exceed our expectations, and the service was great. Overall, a must-try and will continue to try. We really wanted to like Fireside, but we didn't. We did however, love that they had outdoor seating and the servers were incredibly friendly and upbeat. The food however? Not amazing. We both ordered shrubs, mine (watermelon) was okay, but his (pineapple) tasted like straight pickle juice, honestly awful. Food wise, the charcuterie board was tasty, but nothing really sang on it, and the whole radishes they included in his salad (per the honey) almost ruined it. The biggest tasty in everything we had was the added bacon on my burger, which was deeply smokey and amazingly mouth watering. That being said, the burger was unseasoned and the fries were soggy. Beyond the bacon, great service, and nice seating, Fireside was a total miss for us, and we likely won't be back. read more

We sat at the bar after having a mosey wander in the Nobhill neighborhood. We were early enough that the brunch menu was available and late enough that lunch was served, too. Our bartender was personable without being hovering, with good recs. I got the rose bubbles, the house salad, and Mac and Cheese at her recommendation. I also added crab cakes. All were pretty great, and I shared the food with my husband. The rose was nice and crisp. The salad had a really great light vinaigrette and a nice mix of lettuces and watermelon radish. The crab cake didn't have a lot of filler and was perhaps my favorite part of the meal, and I especially loved the really excellent dill tartar sauce. The Mac and cheese was served in a mini cauldron, and it was maybe the one miss of our impromptu lunch. It was cavatapi with white cheese and just felt a little one dimensional - I've had better. All in all, though, it was a lovely meal in a fun neighborhood, and i would happily come back. read more

I had a really nice time here. I challenged the bartenders to make me some drinks I might like. Erica makes a very smooth vieux carre which is on the drink menu. I didn't realize how strong it was until I was ordering my next drink! My other challenge was to make a gin drink that would change my mind about gin (I hate gin!). Oscar poured me one of his original recipes-a take on a cosmopolitan. I was very impressed! I dubbed it the "cherry chapstick" and would recommend it to anyone because it was fantastic. I waited for the dinner service to start and 4 cocktails in that ribeye hit the spot. The fried onions on top were a nice touch they completely took the flavor to the next level. It's a busy restaurant on a cute little street. Great food and quality drinks. I couldn't ask for more. read more

The Fireside. Just splendid! With the summer season coming to a close, the Fireside's lush and welcome patio has been on my list for a few months. They have designed a cute and cozy space inside and out, but the patio is so special. With the covered but well-lit interiors, heaters, and the greenery/trees that make this ambience perfect, anyone will enjoy this spot. We were lucky to be seated immediately, and our server's fashion and energy made me so happy. The drinks came recommended from him, and we really enjoyed our choices - mainly since the drinks we had planned to order were no longer available. I highly recommend ordering the olives... they are perfect, warm, oily, and so juicy. For main courses, we ordered the burger, a salad, and the French dip. WOW. They're French dip has to be the best that I have ever had - full stop! Definitely order this if you do not have any dietary restrictions. I cannot wait to return here. My only (selfish) feedback would be that I would love to see this space used as a light café during the mornings, so I could come and read/work from the exceptional dining room next to the fireplace. read more

Maybe it's what I ordered (the salmon burger) and my BF (who ordered the burger) that really didn't meet our expectations. The salmon was tender and cooked well but the seasoning was lacking. Same for the burger. However I would try different entrees next time! I would recommend since it's a great space and the staff are awesome! read more

We are frequent visitors to Portland to visit our son and family. We just keep searching for a place to take them for a great lunch or dinner and nothing ever seems to say "this is it for return visits!".....until today. I was blown away. From the moment we were greeted out front by the hostess, Trinity, we were engaged. She was very pleasant and offered us in or outdoor seating. We opted for inside. Great atmosphere and decor. The employees were ALL incredibly focused and worked really well as a team. Turns out our server was also Trinity. Seems like she has multiple jobs. She did not disappoint. The menu was not a long drawn out affair which made for easy choices. The tuna melt was terrific and the French dip was the best ever. Great beers and the service was incredible. We watched Trinity never skip a beat between serving her tables and then running to the hostess station. She even grabbed some stuff off of tables between runs.....she never stopped moving. All the employees worked in such amazing unison, it just isn't the norm in our world anymore. As we were leaving, I asked her if she were an owner. She said no, just an employee. I told her that I was so impressed with her work ethic, she behaved like an owner. What a fun place to go. Great food, vibe, decor, and amazing staff. Sitting at the Fireside with old friends (ok, anyone!) was a leisurely night of creating new cocktail memories and food inspiration. We can't quite party like it's 2019 ... yet. I still think Prince would approve. Cheese & Charcuterie is a cool (perfect?) way to start a chat ... and the recommended starter at Fireside. Share. Don't share. Don't care. It's a new dawn, a new day, and I'm feeling good ... whenever sheep-milk cheese, a creamy pate, or thinly-sliced prosciutto dance on my tastebuds like it's 1999. A classic Negroni kept it classy Portland ... and got this party started like Grandma (or Prince's grandmama) would've approved. If we're going back to the old times, let's go old school, right? Or not. After the aperitif awakening my palate, I graduated to Hendricks Gin with Fever Tree Tonic before the friendly server introduced Fireside's own special house Gin & homemade Tonic. It's great to be out of the house for a Fireside chat, amiright ... or, amidrunk? Bring me a Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon with my meal. The chat was now a full-blown conversation. I will come back here every time we visit Portland. The food and drinks were awesome. The Smash Burger was huge--like the size of my head--and I enjoyed every bite. And the best part was that I didn't feel sick after eating it like one often feels after eating a huge burger. But the real stars of the show were the Smashed Fingerling Potatoes. I like a blend of spicy and sweet, and these nailed that combo on the head. If we go back here, we're going to get multiple orders of those. The drinks were awesome too. Unique flavors that you can't find at other restaurants, and we were pleasantly surprised at how strong they were. Also, waitstaff was awesome and super attentive to every table. Side note: The surrounding neighborhood was awesome and upbeat, and The Fireside seemed to be in the heart of everything Nob Hill had to offer. read more

I guess we like this place since we've been there three times in three weeks. Yes, it's true that the menu is small and it takes awhile to get your main entree, but while we're waiting we are thoroughly enjoying our drinks and appetizers on that beautiful, cheery outdoor patio with twinkly lights and gas heaters and having fun chats with the friendly staff. And our dog loves the patio and staff too! About the drinks: I'm addicted to the txakolina rosé, so that's all I've had. (One disappointment with Fireside is that unlike most restaurants, it is not cheaper to buy a bottle of wine. The bottle is 5x the price per glass, which is not cool, but I guess it keeps me from drinking too much.) From the appetizers, the grilled olives, grilled bread, and blistered peppers are fantastic. Sometimes the peppers have been all hot, sometimes not at all, so you never know. The smashed potatoes are delicious - I'll say it again, delicious - and make a great side. I love the smoked trout salad, and my husband loves the Bavette steak and the burger. The inside seems like a really cozy place to be, but for now we are more comfortable eating outside and we love the patio and hope they keep it open. read more

Plants and fire heaters in between tables made for a great outdoor dining aesthetic. Fresh and homemade food - all delicious! Watermelon seasonal mule was incredibly refreshing! Como bread with olive butter so fresh and hearty. I ordered the burrata and heirloom tomato caprese with grilled chicken. Tomatoes were some of the best I've had! My husband ordered the burger with bacon - double stack patties not listed on the menu, so if that's not your style, specify with your server. pretzel was bomb, everything you'd want from a pretzel. salty, bready, well cooked and two dipping sauces: melted sharp cheddar cheese and a stone ground mustard sauce. shishito peppers w sesame seeds: they were solid, but how hard is it to char shishitos and add sesame seeds? chipotle aioli was solid. some of those peppers lit us up! luck of the draw steak kabobs: steak itself was outstanding! perfectly charred and seasoned. for the price, it was not a lot of steak to veg ratio. smashed potatoes: just ok. not bad or good. some were extremely greasy and burnt, others ok. the chimichuri sauce alone was delicious, we were dipping everything in it. overall fun ambiance inside, food was hit or miss, portion to price is not great. I met my bestie from Portland here for dinner and it just reminded me of why I still love Portland, though I haven't lived here in 20+ years. NW 23rd Street hasn't changed and Fireside fits right into the neighborhood. I started with their well-crafted take on a Manhattan, inhaled the roasted Brussel Sprouts, thoroughly enjoyed the Garden Salad with Blackened Shrimp (perfectly prepared and satisfying as a main dish) and ordered the warm brownie dessert knowing full well I was already full. I asked our lovely server if it was enough to share and she said, oh yah, it's huge. And I thought to myself, no desserts are "huge" anymore; we are going to be fighting over the last bite. But she wasn't lying, that brownie was monstrous and so chocolatey with warm chocolate sauce flowing over the sides and melting a big scoop of ice cream.
