In the last year, this place has gone way downhill. I don't know what's going on, but the service is super slow, they are always busy, but they take too many clients at once. Our cars have had to sit for days before getting work done. We had to come get our car yesterday after three days and still half the work wasn't finished , and we took it down the street, and it was diagnosed in one hour. It is a shame because we live like one block from this place, but we will never go back. The sad part - I don't think they care one way or another whether we come back or not. read more

So I don't usually go to car shops, and usually rely on one of my mechanic friends. But just moving to this area, with no garage, and no street-repairs allowed in San Jose, I had no choice. Ultimately, I was in search for a dependable shop for future oil changes, and auto jobs. Thus, I came here after being denied an oil change at oil changers due to my car being too old, so I was taking a leap of faith here. Talked with Sam, he was definitely transparent and genuine, and doesn't try to oversell. While they don't use the brand name oil, he was honest and inform of me of their use of Amtecol (my research lead to it being relatively competitive to the other brands, and was cheaper than going elsewhere). In addition, he was very hasty about getting me in - and - out, with my car being on the lift within minutes. While I knew my brakes were due for a change soon (2 - 4 months), he did inform during their initial inspections, but didn't pressure me into buying in. But his estimate were competitive which included also included rotor replacement, so I figured I would just get it done now. On top of that, when I referenced the parts used for the repair, I was pleased to know that they were OEM parts and not aftermarket parts. In sum, I got in at around 10:20 and left by 12:15 for an oil change, brake replacements (parts were delivered to the shop on the spot) -- it was quick (a Friday morning), and came with a solid price tag. read more

Don't go. Sam is very dishonest, rude and aggressive. I can't understand how people in sound mind will rate this blatantly dishonest person 5 stars I see here. But I know why.. he called me to say delete review otherwise he will take legal action He said he can replace low beam light for $40 a piece labor only. Once I agreed , he changed his mind and said the bulb I purchased is higher quality so I must pay him $60 for one bulb. How that is even possible? Sam was using lot of F words and S words to describe me ( he said Indian..) just because I didn't accept his rate of $60 labor alone. to change just one low beam light that t. I provided him the bulbs I already purchased in Amazon. but he wanted price for part as well. When I said I don't want to do business with him and wanted to leave , he apologized and agreed for $40 but said I must pay cash. Went in there with my 2012 Prius for the 35k mileage service, which consists only of a tire rotation and inspection. The guy did not reset the Maintenance Required notice. I asked him to reset it, and he told me he wouldn't unless he changed the oil. I told him that the 35k service has no oil change. He protested, saying that he knows the service logs and there's no car that goes 10k miles without an oil change. After a couple minutes of back and forth, he tried looking up the maintenance schedule, couldn't find it, then started telling me about what would happen if I waited 10k miles to change my oil. I had had enough, so I asked him directly to reset the Maintenance Required notice. He went on youtube, watched half of a video, asked if I got it, and sent me on my way. Sam and the crew are amazing! I used to do my own oil changes back when I had a beater, but now that I purchased a newer car I get a little nervous.. (Crazy technology!) Since I'm used to doing all my own maintenance I had no clue where to go. Yelp came to the rescue on this one. Sam and everyone else are always super friendly, they also provide quick but solid service. The waiting area is tiny, but they offer to call you if you'd like to walk around instead of waiting there. (Target, Macy's, food near by) Sam seems super honest, never makes you feel awkward if you have any questions, and always goes above and beyond to make sure you are satisfied. Not completely transparent business practice: Oil change card shows three options: synthetic, Regular and one more. The rate card is on Penzol Publicity material, however when I inquired, do you fill up Penzol? I was shocked to learn when I got the reply NO....we put "amtecol oil". Using Penzol publicity poster for publishing rate and really using Some Non Brand oil is completely a deceptive business practice. Also I think owner/sam is not very polite. Since the place is small with two mechanics, it does appear to be busy because of it's limited capacity. I asked if I bring my car at a certain time of the day, how much would be the expected wait time and his reply was I am not a Genius...I am not a Psychic. Sam and his shop are amazing! I have taken my car here a number of times and I will continue to do so. Each time I come in he takes the time to ask a number of questions to properly identify potential issues. He then walks me through exactly what I should have done, what I could have done, and what I can absolutely do without. I have NEVER felt he has up-sold me on a service or part that I didn't really need. Each time I've come to pick up my car he's walked me through all the labor and parts and have never not finished my car the same day (granted, I do pop over in the morning). He's always left me with exactly what I should be on the lookout for and even advice on how long i could keep my car before needing to sell. The mechanic was friendly but they're either very overbooked or don't manage their time well. Went in (with an appointment) for an oil change, was told 1 hour by phone. That turned into "up to 2 hours" at time of drop-off. 2.5 hours later--and having not heard anything from them--I go and check on the car and the work hadn't even been started yet. I've taken my car here for oil changes a few times and have gotten my breaks done as well. Typically their service has been good. However this most recent time, I called in advance to schedule an appointment but they told me I should just walk in when they opened at 9 AM on Saturday. So I brought my car in and they said it would take an hour. Two hours later they hadn't even gotten it onto the rack to start, even though they originally estimated an hour. I understand that an oil change is not their biggest priority when it comes to fixing cars but I am still a paying customer and it wasn't very busy when I had dropped it off. If they had been up front about how long it would've taken them, I would be much more understanding. I ended up leaving without the oil change and I'm not sure if I will be returning. Update: I did get a call apologizing later in the day and offering a complimentary oil change. I appreciate the gesture and customer service. read more

I had only been in town a few weeks when the "check engine" light came on in my Suzuki XL7. Based on the Yelp reviews, I took my car to Sam at First Auto Service. He didn't disappoint and immediately ran a diagnostic test ($40) to determine the problem. He then informed me of the issue with a one of my sensors, told me the price of the part and labor to replace it and, upon my approval, had everything wrapped up in about an hour. They were nice and professional, and I left feeling like the service matched the Yelp rating. I came to this Auto Shop because it had great reviews. It was closer then the one I had been going to and I was willing to spend a higher price point to ensure my car was taken care of. That's exactly the opposite of what happened here. I came in April of this year to have my AC compressor replaced and shortly after I took it in, I noticed it was making sounds when I turned it on, whistling sounds. I went to take it back in between May-June and was told that it just needed to be recharged "oh, and that something was wrong with the switch/turner to the unit"...yeah, right. Well, me not knowing any better I said, "okay" and left it at that. Fast forward to today, my mechanic changed the back struts/shocks on my Honda before I moved and when he looked at it he immediately noticed my AC compressor was making sounds and said it was a BAD unit/part and mentioned the manufacturer should replace it. I came in early November to let them know the problem and that I had already informed them of this, he basically told me it was too late and threw the warranty (90 days) at me. He also said that he would have to charge $100 (per hour) for it to get done. Hence my review, I paid the $100 which is crazy as I paid a really high price point to start with. The Five Star Rating on Yelp is unacceptable. Also, if you guys are looking for a mechanic go with Carlos in DT San Jose. He's way more affordable and helps you actually understand the mechanics of the car and it's workings. He makes SENSE to me when he's explaining it. He's very willing to share his knowledge and does what he can to accommodate me. To the owner, happy to take this down, when you pay me back my money for this AC Compressor replacement otherwise, this shit is staying up. Hope it was worth the extra $100 dollars. Especially since your price points are set so high and you're not going to give us courteous, white glove service for then I'm happy to let others know on this forum. But they extended their service checking my vehicle for other services too and confirmed everything else looking perfect. He even took the vehicle for a test drive since I proposed for that to check a potential transmission problem. He was graceful to do these actions without charges. Fortunately, they make it quite simple here. I called for an appointment for an oil change and was told they could squeeze me in on that same day. They asked about my car model and year, and suggested I get synthetic. They quoted me a price of $55 (very reasonable), and that was the price I was charged. No hidden costs or ambiguity. I was in and out in ~20 minutes. Not to mention DT Sunnyvale is right across the street, so you're not completely stranded while waiting for your car to be serviced! **Giving it 4 stars for now simply because I haven't had experience with their other car services, but rest assured I will definitely come back for all my car-related needs :) read more

I have a Porsche Cayenne, I get all my auto service done at the dealership because I felt that most other garages would be unreliable. My last encounter with the Porsche Dealership in Stevens Creek left me with a very bad taste in my mouth ironically I bought my Porsche from them. Anyhow, I needed my brakes changed and I decided to go on a limb and call a few shops in the area. I called a few garages and for some reason I didn't really trust them. I actually called First Auto Service when they were closed and believe it or not I didn't leave a message or anything and Sam called me back. He was very patient with me giving me quotes for both the front and rear brakes. Honestly I didn't know the difference. I decided to drive my car over and get my brakes checked. He was very patient with my lack of terminology for car parts and told me what I needed to change and why when it came to breaks. I left my car and went to do errands. After I left I got a call from Sam giving me a very thorough run down on the cost and why things needed to be changed. He even gave me the option to wait another 3 months for my back brakes, but I decided to change both since it would save me the hassle of another brake. I brought my car into the shop in the morning and got it at the end of the day. Something that a Porsche dealership would not be able to do and on top of that you have to wait for an appointment. I had to get the oil change and tire rotation done for my new car. So, while browsing the workshops in Sunnyvale on Yelp, I came across First Auto Service. It was an eye catcher since it is hard to find all 5-starer reviews for the car workshops. So, I thought of giving it a try. I went to this place on Saturday around the same time when they open up. They recommended me to go for Synthetic Oil as that is much better than a regular oil. So, I did. And right after 30 minutes or so, my car was ready ! Later when I came back home, I made a quick check on Internet regarding Synthetic oils and yes they are far better as compared to the regular oil. Excellent advice and the quick service ! read more

They're definitely honest, they do good work, and when I talk to the owner it doesn't feel like he's trying to pull one over on me. Went to get the headlight bulbs replaced. He was nice enough to accept the work. But then the saga began. Even though the effort to replace the high beam and low beam bulbs was disproportionate he asked for $20 to replace each of the three bulbs (2 high beam and one low beam). I had bought the replacement bulbs from Autozone hoping to replace them myself but was advised to take them to a repair shop. Sam found that the high beam bulbs were not the right ones. So he asks me how much I had paid to buy the two high beam bulbs. I told him that it was $25.99. So he says that he will charge me $20 each on top of the $40 that I had already paid him for the service charge. This was clearly fleecing me. That logic failed me but I nevertheless said ok since he had pulled out the replacement even before he told me that the high beam bulbs I had bought were not the right ones. Then he became overly aggressive when I casually asked him how much longer it would take and said I was being disrespectful of his time. He then said why not I do it myself and he would give me the tools to do it. So this is the respect that he gave me as the customer. While he did the job but my experience was certainly not pleasant at all. read more

We live in Oakland but I would definitely consider driving to Sunnyvale to visit the great people at First Auto Service. I've already told my relatives in Sunnyvale and the surrounding area to check out these guys for any auto services needs. When I told my aunt, she nodded and said that she has lots of friends who go here and it's solid. Bottom line, Andy and Jafar are awesome. They are low-key, friendly people who are true professionals. I know very little about cars and am always leery about going to an auto shop but I knew from the beginning that these guys were honest straight-shooters. We came for a pre-purchase inspection and later needed to get a brake rotator fixed and these two were quick, efficient, and trustworthy. Since we came from the East Bay, their amazing service and speed were really appreciated. I can't thank these guys enough for helping us to feel great about the new used car that we just purchased and for being a great model for how we all hope auto shops should be . I took my car here for brakes. I called in the day before to make sure they were available and had my parts. Nevertheless, they ordered the wrong part, so a half day repair turned into a full day. Second, they over torqued my wheel lugs and ruined one of them. I discovered this while I was trying to change a flat tire and could not remove the wheel even with a pipe for extended leverage. I'm just glad my wife wasn't driving at the time. Over tightening is a sign of an amateur job, and I will not be coming back. read more

I have a bad experience with this place. I was about to buy a car and asked them if they are doing pre-purchase inspection. I specifically asked them if they check everything, engine, transmission, and many other details that I might have missed. Sam only made a drive test with me around 20 minutes. After the ride, he told me to parts that are problematic about the car, even the transmission oil and many other stuff. He told that all fixes would cost around $1300. However, they didn't check anything after the test ride even though he said that there are many things that needs to be replaced. He immediately printed the bill that I had to pay $100 just for the test drive. Normally in pre-purchase inspections, they use lifts and inspect the cars from end to end, and it generally takes more than an hour. Paying $100 only for 20 minutes test drive was not a good experience. read more
