Some friends and I went to First Slice in Andersonville yesterday, July 14 for pie. There was no seating in the room where customers order and the room with seating had a short stairwell. Since one of us is in a wheelchair, we asked if we could move some chairs down to an accessible area and were told no. One of us brought two chairs down anyway and we ate. I was shocked by the indifference of the two behind the counter and their ignorance about disability law. Usually, the people working there are pleasant. It almost looks as if it is closing down with the lack of furniture and seating. It has a very forlorn atmosphere. read more

So good. We ordered delivery, one slice of raspberry pear, key lime, French silk, and blueberry cheesecake. The raspberry was really unique and so pretty and probably my favorite because of that. The key lime I think was the best overall, just classic and really well done. French silk was beautiful and delicious, as was the blueberry cheesecake. Revised Review: I am updating my review as the management of this restaurant quickly followed up on my previous review. I have always believed that a true measure of a restaurant's service quality is their ability to recover from service hiccups as every institution will inevitably run into those issues. Within a few hours of my initial post, the manager had responded with action she intended to take to rectify the situation both with the service and to compensate me for the lack of coffee in my first order. This fast and exemplary response to an issue makes me believe that this is not the norm at this place (or any of their locations) and service issues should not be something expected at any of their locations. Original Review: I wish I could like this place more. I stopped in with all of the great reviews to get a good slice of pie and a coffee as a short break as I was hopping around the neighborhood. I selected the pecan pie as it has been one of my favorites for awhile. The pie itself was pretty good, but nothing I would write home about. The key issue was with the basic coffee order. The person filling my order obviously gave me the bottom of the pot as the carafe was noticeably tapped out. She then just put the coffee up on the counter said "here you go" and walked away. I understand getting the bottom of the pot happens... so I took the mug. When I got to my table, I looked into the mug and was astounded that it was only half full. Never did the person offer to give me the other half of my coffee. I just finished the pie and half cup of bottom of the barrel coffee (that wasn't great to be honest) and left. With very basic ambiance, service that is willing to give you half an order and walk away, and just decent pies, I can't honestly endorse this place. I do believe the others who love the pies here... still... Bottom line, come here if there's a particular pie you'd like to try. Don't expect anything out of this world and you may be better served taking it to go. read more

I'm sure the cake is amazing. I am giving one star because we feel like we've been lied to. My husband and called to order a fresh cake and was given a time to pick up. When we arrived, the cake was not found and we were told all cakes are frozen. We called back spoke to a lady who said, oh I have your birthday cake and meet inside. We went back in and that lady didn't come out, and another lady was very unfriendly, and say all our cakes are frozen. Again. I reiterate I'm sure your cakes are delicious but I really feel like you lied to us and absolutely misrepresent the order. read more

They put the perfect amount of flavor and taste to harmonize together rather than to let any one aspect of the pie be overpowering. Traditional Apple Pie: This is the best apple pie I have ever had. This apple pie is true to it's name and properly let's the apple be the star of the pie. First Slice layers very thin slices of perfectly cooked apple on top of one another to create the 2-3 inch of JUST apple filling in the pie. The taste is there, the portions are there, the crust is there, I just love everything about this pie. Apple Pecan Cheesecake: The cheesecake has a small layer of apple near the crust of the pie which is a nice surprise. The cheesecake portion has a nice subtle apple pecan flavoring to it. read more

Quaint pie shop and cafe! The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere feels casual and positive. THE FOOD: I had the blueberry cheesecake pie and the French silk. The blueberry cheesecake had a layer of blueberry creme, cheesecake, and fresh blueberries on a graham cracker crust. My husband loved it and it wasn't too sweet, which is good if you don't like to be overwhelmed by the sugar. The french silk was good and the chocolate was quite rich-- definitely the type of pie you need when you are going through something and need a food cure. Along with the pie, I also ordered a cup of coffee-- I'm not sure what kind of coffee they brew here, but it was pretty good! Tips: -They sell mini pies to go if you are interested in buying a smaller pie for a random night when you need it! -In case you are looking for a warm place to do work, the heat in this restaurant was on point! One of Chicago's best local pie shops! I'm pretty plain Jane but I was convinced by a fellow patron to put my doubts aside and try the Coconut Cream Pistachio and my mind was blown. My only problem with First Slice is all my favorite staples are seasonal so I'm forced to wait. I love shopping local and First Slice will not leave you disappointed. Their space is also great for bringing your work, reading or some meetup time as they hold ample seating and widely spread out. read more

Jeepers, I live about equidistant between the two First Slice locations. My fat gut says "Yay" but my cardiologist says "Oh dear." Apple pie is by far the standout among their offerings. You get a great crust, lots of firm fruit, and a restrained hand with the sugar and spice. That all adds up to a top, top, top-notch apple pie. The rest of the stuff ranges from pretty good to not so hot. The cream-based pies are okay, such as coffee toffee, but I hate to see a partially cut pie sitting in the cooler with a pool of liquid in the empty portion of the pan. That does not look appetizing and unfortunately seems frequent here. These guys do cherry pie really well, and these will only get better when real Michigan cherries come into season later this spring. The term "hand pie" makes me snicker, but that didn't stop me from gobbling it up like a little piggy. The key lime is also good but the lime portion was not tart enough. The brownies and cookie bars are a poor effort though. First I tried the caramel-laced brownie--tasted great but way too mushy. Next was the mocha pecan blondie--again, tasted great, but this time a bit crisp and dry. Finally I completed the trifecta with the chocolate-chip cookie bar. Sigh. If I was expecting that goldilocks level of texture on the third attempt, I was very disappointed, because this was dry as a bone and hard as a rock. I couldn't cut it with the flat side of a fork; I had to use the tines, and of course after several seconds of slowly applying severe downward pressure, the cookie pieces went flying across the table. So, the takeaway is to stick with the fruit pies and an occasional key lime. Not a problem for me. This is probably a 3.5, but I'm rounding up because who doesn't love having a pie shop so handy to one's commute home? read more

Not to miss key lime pie! We had a carry out and I wanted to eat the whole pie. Was good, sort of? Limited myself to two slices!! A case of pies is like a beacon of light shining through an ominously dark and cloudy Wednesday afternoon, which is exactly when I arrived here, after the pies called my name and requested my presence. Was dessert hopping and saw good things about this place on yelp so decided to check it out. I came in around 8pm on a Friday night, and to my surprise still had a large selection of pies! I decided to go with the pistachio and key lime. The slices are a bit on the smaller side. They are cheaper that most, about $4 so I guess you get what you pay for. The pistachio pie had a coconut crust and it was AMAZING. Do yourself a favor and try this pie. I never tasted anything like it. The key lime was decent as well, but didn't stand out compared to other key lime pies I have tasted. They have a bunch of other pies I would check out like the polka dot pie that seems to be popular. Having specifically come to Andersonville for the Women & Children First used book sale and to drop in at First Slice, I was not disappointed. There's a lot to look at in First Slice from the beautiful pies to the elaborate artwork. The flavored lemonades were a perfect way to cool down on a hot summer day, and of course the pie was amazing. We also got a turkey sandwich (or was it a panini?) which hit the spot. I could see myself coming back for a leisurely cup of coffee (discounted because in this fantasy I bring my own mug and they do that here) and a slice of pie while I people watch out the window. Cute place! Good pie, ok coffee, and an extensive lunch menu. Barista seemed stand-offish, but it's to be expected at local coffee shops. I got a small coffee and a "coffee-toffee" slice. Coffee was ok, and they have 50 cent refills, which is good. Coffee-toffee was a slight misnomer: it was more like a mocha-French silk pie. It seemed like the only toffee was sprinkled lightly on the top, but that was about it. That being said, it was REALLY good! The pie's consistency was thick and creamy, and the chocolate and coffee flavors were deep and delicious. Although I just got pie and coffee, their lunch options look soooo good! Love! 10/10 would come back again. Its a great cafe hidden in an art store. You could easily have a great lunch followed by some pie for dessert or just come in for pie and coffee. I had to check it out when a friend of mine told me about this place and how good the pie is. Ambiance the decor isnt anything fancy resembling a local coffee spot. Most of the people I am told live in the area and it is a convenient place to get work done, grab a sandwich & some dessert. Staff they were very eager to answer questions its hard to pick a favorite but they asked questions to help you get which product would work best for you. I liked how much input they were able to give. Food I admit at $5 a slice my expectations had to be sky high but I wasn't blown away enough to justify the hype. First slice pie is like a tasty tasty slice of heaven on your plate. I preordered and picked up six pies for an office party (early pi day celebration!) and couldn't be happier with the results. The folks that work there are super friendly and were helpful with all aspects of my order. I ordered six pies (peanut butter chocolate, apple, polka dot, key lime, French silk, and sour cherry. I of course had to try them all! Each pie was amazing and I had a hard time deciding which was my favorite. I know they are famous for their apple pie (and believe me it did not disappoint) but I think I might have loved the chocolate peanut butter the most. I am a sucker for peanut butter pies and this was one of the best I have ever had. My 200th review and I saved it for someplace AWESOME. locally sourced ingredients, organic, homemade food from a non-profit whose mission it is to feed the hungry of Chicago. With the money they make from their three locations, they serve nearly 4000 meals to those in need every month. Amazing. Super friendly, down to earth staff, eclectic decorations (hello giant piece of pie in the window that's so big I could crawl inside...) delicious pie, homey interior, with (what look like) hand painted plates and mugs, AND opportunities to volunteer and help love on fellow Chicagoans. Usually if something sounds to good to be true it usually is. But this place is one of the few exceptions. It's just as good as it sounds. Great prices, great free street parking, I literally don't know how this place could get any better. Maybe if it were slightly bigger so you could stay and study here without being like you're taking up real estate? They serve sandwiches, lasagna, quiche, pie, coffee. Pizza at other locations. A piece of pie runs around $3.50. Key lime is delicious! Not too tart, not too sweet. The graham cracker crust is amazing. The French silk is so decadent! It's dark chocolate filling, and super smooth with fresh chocolate shavings on top. And apparently food and wine magazine listed their Apple pie as one of the best (NBD)! This review is only for Apple pie. Been there twice with same result. The apples and spice were excellent. Apple pie has to have a solid crust. The crust is undetectable as pie is refrigerated causing pie crust to have the same texture as the soft apples. I would hope that they can put this type of pie out of fridge. Keylime with a graham cracker crust is the type of pie needing refrigeration. read more

I got the French Silk pie and liked it! The chocolate flavor was good and rich. It wasn't the best French Silk pie I've had - overall I wish the dish was a little richer and less airy (even though the chocolate flavor was strong overall), but I still finished it. The pie was probably closer to a 3 for me, but I LOVE their mission of feeding the hunger and connecting with the community. The waitstaff was also so nice, even asking if they should turn down the music while I was studying - so overall the experience was a 4! read more

Since we moved to the area, I've always wanted to try out this inviting place. We stopped by for some iced coffee and ended up getting a slice of pie as well. We tried the Traditional Apple Pie. It was tasty. They'll warm it up for you and serve it up with some whipped cream as well. We actually wanted a different pie, but I guess the pies were misplaced or mislabeled. It took a while for the pie to come, but it all worked out in the end and they were really nice and apologetic about it; we even got a complimentary refill. We very much appreciated the gesture. We'll definitely return in the future to try other things on their menu. This is a great neighborhood joint where you can enjoy a low key lunch or grab a snack. read more

I've been coming here for years and had a few of their pies served at my wedding. They do great work in our community feeding the hungry and their food is delightful. Most people talk about their pies (which are great and can come in slices and small pies), but their meals are tasty too! I remember dinner and dessert. As a big peanut butter and chocolate fan, my favorite pie is the peanut butter chocolate, which is more peanut butter than chocolate and VERY rich. Be prepared. Their mouse is fluffy and their cheesecakes are yummy. My least favorite pie is the balsamic raspberry pear. I think that's more to do with my preference than the pie construction. I adventured all the way up to the far North side, beyond Devon Ave, to the part of the city where the grid breaks down and I no longer recognize whether I'm in Chicago or Skokie, or even which way is the lake. It was a journey to hang with my friend Whitney, to go to Target and bring her cat to the vet with my car. We stopped for lunch at cafe that came recommended for its pie. Not that I was up late the night before obsessing over pie in my pajamas... OK I was. I really wanted some pie. First Slice Pie Cafe puts out an excellent slice. Based on my friend's Southern background, we shared a huge slice of French Silk. The chocolate mousse was silky as advertised. To balance the sweet with the savory, we shared a ham sandwich with melted Wisconsin cheddar and sundried tomato. I love how soft (yet still toasty warm) the bread it came on was. I like that they give you a nice big salad when you order your slice, but it's a little frustrating bc one slice of quiche and a salad isn't quite enough for a meal. I wish they had an option of getting just a slice for slightly cheaper and no salad, and then I would just get two slices. Ironically I've never actually tried their pie, but I love their quiche. Best place ever! Consistently delicious and fresh food, incredibly friendly and informative staff, convenient and quaint location. Best coffee in the area by far; this place has a wide and unique variety of sandwiches and pies (everything I've tried has been amazing) and fun specials like their Pizza Fridays!
