I'm very disappointed with my experience with JB's Deli today. I ordered two Reuben sandwiches and a Cobb salad, with a total bill of approximately $65. The Reubens were OK, although I found them to be fairly dry. More concerning, however, was what happened with the salad. The Cobb salad came with two packets of blue cheese dressing. When I opened one and put it on the salad, I noticed that the color looked unusual. I checked the packet and discovered that the Best By date was November 23, 2025, nine months past the date. Obviously, I did not feel comfortable eating the salad and had to throw it away. It also left me questioning whether the other food I received was handled appropriately. I am now concerned about whether the Thousand Island dressing served on the Reubens was also expired. I attempted to contact the deli to give them an opportunity to address the issue. The first time I called, someone answered but there was dead air and then they hung up. I called again and explained the situation to a woman who answered. She apologized and asked me to hold a moment. I waited on hold for 10 minutes before giving up. When I called back again, no one answered. Mistakes can happen, but serving a customer two dressing packets that are nine months past their Best By date is a serious food-safety and quality-control issue. What has made the experience even more frustrating is that, after spending $65, I have been unable to get a meaningful response from the restaurant. For this reason, I will be disputing my credit card charge and will not be returning to JB's Deli. I hope management takes this seriously, reviews the dates on their prepared foods and condiments, and addresses how customer food-safety concerns are handled. read more

I finally tried JB's deli in Andersonville. OMG, what a neighborhood gem! While the sandwiches are $18, it comes with like a half a pound of meat on fresh rye bread. It's a hefty sandwich that's made very authentically! Excellent service and they can guide you to what is popular on the menu, like their Reuben sandwich and corned beef sandwiches. read more

4/5- quality meats and bread. The sandwich I had was amazing- just a classic pastrami. I tried my friends club sandwich and that was also very good! If you're looking for a good classic deli sandwich on the north side this is definitely the place to stop. The only downside is the price/portions. I feel like the prices are high because the portions are so big (which is fair), but if they offered half portions for half the price I feel like I would be more inclined to go there because I can't really finish any of those sandwiches myself and they're all around $20. They have a seating area in an old retail space for a former business next door, so that's nice. It's not exactly like an old-school Jewish deli experience but they do have some of the old specialties. It's one of the few places around like this, so I'm glad that it is here. The people working there are nice. I'm not losing my mind in excitement about the place, because it's not exactly like going to Kaufman's Deli or Manny's, but it's a good lunch spot. read more

JB's Deli is a sandwich lovers dream! I was originally introduced to JB's via my husband a year ago but I never had the appetite to eat such a large sandwich. I finally randomly decided to check out JB's on a surprisingly busy day. The inside of JB's is a 1/3 sandwich counter, 1/3 miniature store, and a 1/3 sitting section in the back room. I didn't expect it to have so much going on inside but it gets very cramped when a lot of people are waiting for sandwiches and by a lot I mean 5 or 6 people. On the day I visited it was really busy and they were unfortunately short-staffed so the wait time was probably double what you'd normally encounter. I ordered the "My Cardiologist Needs a New Car" and it was massive. It was listed as roughly 3/4 pounds of deli meat and they did not lie. The sandwich was massive and I only managed to get through a quarter of the sandwich. Due to the size of the sandwich I was able to eat it over a couple of days. Next time I am going to opt for a sandwich that is promptly pastrami and/or corned beef because the brisket was a little flavorless. The saltiness from the other meats helped balance the flavors but it you had the brisket by itself it wasn't as delicious as the corned beef and pastrami. The overstuffed sandwiches are a great way to buy something that will last you a few meals and try out the different combinations of meats. I will definitely visit again to try out a different sandwich but I will pre-order so I can avoid any potential wait-time. read more

JB's Deli is a cute local staple. They have such a big menu! They have sandwiches, baked goods, deli salads, plus a pharmacy in the back. I got their veggie and cheese sandwich and paid extra for extra cheese and avocado. The sandwich comes with cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and red onion. You can choose a side of pasta salad, baked beans, or chips, and it comes with a pickle. The sandwich was good, a very typical vegetarian sandwich. The best part of the sandwich was the amount of cheese they put on it and the onion bun it came on. The veggie sandwich didn't have any pizzazz though! I've been spoiled with how creative people have gotten with veggie sandwiches - micro greens, beets, hummus. I just wanted a little more! Although I wouldn't come back for this sandwich, they still had so many other vegetarian options that I would come back for, such as the pasta salad. The pasta salad had a lot of fresh herbs and was very yummy. They also had breakfast sandwiches, baked goods, baked beans, potato pancakes, blintzs. knishes, bagels, and more. Plenty of options! The inside of the deli is so cute. It seems like a classic old Chicago building with the tile floor, exposed brick wall, and ornate ceiling. There is some outdoor seating along the sidewalk if you have a nice day and want to eat outside. Otherwise they have additional seating behind the cashier. The deli is right off Clark street, so you can usually find parking or take the 22 bus. I would definitely come back here! It would be a great place to grab some food for a picnic by the lake. read more

Terrible service waited a half hour for a sandwich. They told me to go have a seat. I finally came back after 15 minutes. I had a bag of chips and a soda in my hand. I had finished them. The guy said what are you waiting for? I told him a Reuben. Five minutes later, he gives me the Reuben. It had been sitting on the sandwich Press for like 20 minutes. He then accused me of taking the wrong chips. He said I was supposed to take ruffles. I told him I paid $26 for a can of Soto a bag of chips and a sandwich. It has also improved a bit since my last visit - it's cleaner, has more friendly customer service, and the bagels, well, they're still very good. I always order one toasted with cream cheese, which they generously lather onto the bagel. Side note: there's an eclectic array of products for sale, so spend a moment and check out some fun stuff. I would have rated this deli 4 stars, but it has some service issues. We ordered take out for pickup at noon. The website accepted payment and sent confirmation email and text. However, when we arrived at 12:15, the staff seemed confused. One employee told me the website was down when I ordered (although it functioned well enough to accept my payment). Another employee said that she had the order and held forth a piece of paper. A third employee told me that he was working on my order and it would be ready in five minutes. In other words , no one had even started preparing the order, which, according to the website, should have been ready at 12:00. When I got out of there, it was 12:35. We got home and immediately set to eating the matzoh ball soup. It was excellent. The matzoh balls themselves were initially fluffy and delicious and the broth salty and flavorful. However, one of the 4 matzoh balls was a bit too dense. We later ate brisket with jus. Both were good. However, the brisket needed a little salt. We did not like the potato latkes. Unfortunately, they were very dense and bland. They are also significantly thicker than my understanding of what a potato latke is. Whenever I (or family) have made them, they are thin and crispy. These were neither. These would have been better with the sour cream we ordered, but whoever filled the order decided to give us apple sauce instead for some reason. Overall, I would return here for the matzoh ball soup, but would probably not bother ordering in advance. read more

I was the only one here at 9:20, and the service was indifferent at best. I had to repeat my order (egg and cheese on a bagel) twice, and it turns out they just microwave the egg. Very disappointing. Stopped in needing food to curtail a hypoglycemic condition. I have walked past this Andersonville staple over the year, always with the intention of trying it as one of the last authentic Jewish delis in Chicago (as they advertise on their windows). Quite simply, the BEST Reuben sandwich I've ever had in my life. The meat was moist and delicious, the portion hearty, the melted cheese and sauerkraut heated and gooey. The marble Rye bread was toasted and crunchy, a perfect counterpoint to the melt in your mouth pastrami. I probably ate a little bit of the paper wrap on the sandwich, not wanting to miss a single ounce of the cheese. The sandwich sides were unimpressive, I went with the pasta salad. A small portion that lacked any real flavor, and does nothing to support the amazingness of the main event. Luckily, I also ordered some matzah ball soup. One huge matzah in a subtle delicious chicken stock base was a perfect compliment to my sandwich, perfectly blanking out the disappointing pasta salad. Overall, I'm so glad I stopped in, and will endeavor to do so again very soon. I'll just skip the pasta salad next time. read more

Small and simple with a straight forward and eclectic menu that provides all the old favorites, and a few nice twists on old school items. They offer a great bagel I believe are from "New York Bagel and Bialy', the best there is anywhere. JB's lox and bagel sandwich is a plenty sized breakfast or lunch at a great price. I received moldy bagels. Their homemade babka not only was not homemade but the packaging indicated it was expired. The Swedish meatballs came with no sauce. The soup was not the sort I ordered and it was refrigerator cold as was everything else except for the moldy bagels. I will never order from you again - after decades of patronage. Had a cold this weekend and wanted matzo ball soup for a cure. I usually order from The Bagel, but a friend recommended I try JB's. Ordered several items for delivery on Saturday, May 10. Ordered at 1.50pm, got an automatic email that my order would arrive between 3.10-3.25pm. I called at 3.25pm to ask if my order was in process. After getting my name and delivery address to check on my order, the woman who answered the phone told me my order was "on the way". Got an email at 3.50pm that my order was "ready for delivery." I suspect they didn't see my order until I called and then started it. My order arrived at 4.09pm. Soup was lukewarm and the matzo balls were the most dense I've ever had anywhere. Soup was meh; perfectly okay chicken soup, but nothing special or particularly flavorful. Pastrami sandwich was also meh. Meat was very salty and not terribly flavorful. Potato knish was good. All in all, the food was nothing special and certainly not worth waiting over 2 hours for. I'll never cheat on The Bagel again. read more

What's the best reuben you've ever eaten? If you've been to JB's deli, it probably looks like one of the photos in this post. If you haven't been yet, it will become your favorite reuben spot - guaranteed! My girlfriend and I were craving some potato pancakes so we did a quick Yelp search and found way more than just latkes. All together we snagged matza ball soup, potato pancakes, traditional reuben and the rachel reuben (with a modification: sub ranch for 1000 island). Raphael and Millie were so helpful! They were friendly and funny too. We ordered our food and they got to working on it right away starting by slicing the meat (and there was a lot of it too). This was the real deal. Finished them off in a press to get them golden and delicious. The sandwiches came with a choice of side (chips, pasta salad or baked beans) and a pickle. We got the pasta salad and baked beans - tasty! The sandwich portions are huge and my girlfriend even made two meals out of it. 2020 has been a dark year yet one of the highlights has been discovering JB's Deli and the wonderful people that make your food dreams come true!
